Judy Ann Jenkins

NEW MARKET – Judy Ann Jenkins, 65, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Jenkins was born Sept. 11, 1940, in Omaha, Neb., daughter of the late Jarvis Quimby and Ann Frances Sedlak Slaton. She was a psychiatric registered nurse with Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, a longtime Girl Scout leader and a Red Cross volunteer. She was the wife for 46 years of the late James Glenn Jenkins, who died Feb. 19, 2006.

Surviving are her children, Mary, Timothy and his wife Karen, Barbara, Kathy and Elizabeth; her grandchildren, Anne, Hannah, Sarah, Adam and Ashlyn; and a sister, Mary Slaton Johnson of Hico, Texas.

The funeral Mass was conducted Friday, March 10, at St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock by Father Wilhelm Ettner. Burial followed in the Mount Jackson cemetery.

Mary C. Landes

BRIDGEWATER – Mary C. Landes, 82, formerly of Waynesboro, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Bridgewater Home.

Mrs. Landes was born March 23, 1923, in Shenandoah County, daughter of the late Fitzhugh Lee Coffman and Carrie R. Frye Coffman. She had been an active member of the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, serving on several circles and committees and had worked in the Waynesboro public schools. She was the wife of the late Wallace B. Landes Sr.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah L. Thompson of Salem; three sons, the Rev. Dr. Wallace B. Landes Jr. of Palmyra, Pa., Kenneth M. Landes of Staunton and Treacy A. Landes of Waynesboro; a sister, Elizabeth Silvious of Mount Jackson; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pastor Edward Carl conducted the memorial service Saturday, March 11, at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren. Burial was private.

Marjorie Moore Legg

WINCHESTER – Marjorie Moore Legg, 81, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Legg was born Feb. 26, 1925, in Fireco, Raleigh County, W.Va., daughter of the late John Byron and Pearl Dean Moore. She was a homemaker and member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church. She served as past president of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority.

Surviving are her husband, Harold Gordon Legg Sr. whom she married Nov. 26, 1947; two sons, Harold Gordon Legg Jr. of Winchester and John Byron Legg of Eagle County, Colo.; three grandchildren, Elliott Dean Legg of Winchester, Jessica Cropper of Denver, Colo. and Megan Holzbauer of Edinburg; and four nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Moore; and two sisters, Louise Moore Blevins and Betsy Moore Looney.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, March 11, at Jones Funeral Chapel in Winchester by the Rev. Dr. Alan R. Felumlee. Burial followed in Mount Hebron cemetery.

Frederick “Fred” Markley

STEPHENS CITY – Frederick “Fred” Markley, 74, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Markley was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Woodstock, son of the late Edward and Clara Alice Cook Markley. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was a sheet metal mechanic with Wine and Stillwell and attended Valley Assembly of God in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Mae Jane Grim Markley.

Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Markley Orndorff, Donna Markley and Gail Reaves, all of Stephens City; a son, Rick Markley of Strasburg; sister, Carol Coffman of Woodstock; brother, Wayne Markley of Walterboro, S.C.; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Monday, March 13, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, by Pastors William H. Wood and Malcom H. Vande Riet. Burial was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Mildred H. McDaniel

ELKTON – Mildred H. McDaniel, 84, died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the Harrisonburg Health and Rehab Center.

Mrs. McDaniel was born May 2, 1921, in Rockingham County, daughter of the late Edgar Austin and Mary Francis Hensley. She was a homemaker most of her life, had worked at Sancar Corporation for a number of years, and was a member of the Shenandoah River Chapter of the D.A.R. She was a former member of St. Stephen and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, serving as treasurer for 25 years, and was a member of Blue Ridge Independent Church near Elkton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Arthur McDaniel on July 30, 1985; and son, James A. McDaniel Jr. in April of 1985.

Surviving are two sons, Walter L. McDaniel of New Market and Bernard E. McDaniel of Gainesville; one daughter, Gloria M. Crump of Mount Crawford; a brother, Eugene A. Hensley of Elkton; two sisters, Alice Sellers and Pauline M. Hensley, both of Harrisonburg; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and very close friend, James M. Meadows.

A memorial service was conducted Tuesday, March 14, at Blue Ridge Independent Church, by the Revs. Gerald L. Meeks and Stuart Wood. Burial was private in Mount Olivet cemetery, McGaheysville.

Connie Ray Knott
(October 13, 1936 - September 26, 2012)

Connie Ray Knott, 75, of Mount Solon, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the University of VA Hospital.

He was born in Augusta Co., on October 13, 1936, and was a son of the late Elza Paul and Elva Mae (Michael) Knott.

Connie Ray was retired from the US Forest Service. He was a member of Heavens Golden Gate Church.

He was united in marriage on February 14, 1994 to Janet Marie (Balser) Knott, of Mt. Solon, who survives. He was married to Reba Jean (Myers) Evers Knott on July 4, 1987, and she preceded him in death on October 7, 1993.

Surviving in addition to his wife is his twin sister, Bonnie Pitsenbarger of Clover Hill, three step daughters, Alice Ann Perry of Waynesboro, April June Wood of Middlebrook, and Jo Ellen Evers. He is also survived by eight step grandchildren, one great granddaughter

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred W. Knott and a step son, Norman Evers.

A funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 29, 2012 with the Revs. Golden Clark and Warren Lee Knott officiating. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 28, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Margaret Mehring

Margaret Mehring, 85, of Woodstock, died Thursday, March 9, 2006.

Mrs. Mehring was born April 22, 1920, at Akron, Ohio, daughter of the late John P. and Mary Kibler Bauserman. She was a 1937 honors graduate of Stephens City High School and was employed by C&P Telephone Company in Washington, D.C. She was later a civilian employee of the Department of Defense, where she served as a statistical assistant and security officer.

After her retirement in 1969, she and her husband moved to Shenandoah County. She maintained a longtime involvement in Emanuel Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities, and was actively involved in the community until her recent illness.

Surviving are her husband, Charles W. Mehring whom she married on Sept. 30, 1944; daughter Karen Magee and husband William A. of Corpus Christi, Texas; brother, Lester A. Bauserman and wife Carrie Lou of Roanoke; two sisters, Ruth Long of Laurel, Md. and Edna Phipps and husband Malcolm of Chattanooga, Tenn.; foster sister, Mary Strosnider and husband Leon of Stephens City; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted Monday, March 13, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Woodstock, by the Rev. John F. Taylor Jr.

Viola Nealia “Annie” Oakley

LEESBURG – Viola Nealia “Annie” Oakley, 77, formerly of Strasburg, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Heritage Hall Nursing and Rehab, Leesburg.

Mrs. Oakley was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Springfield, Ohio, daughter of the late George and Nealia Sterling Taylor. She was a member of Strasburg United Methodist Church, Shenandoah American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Strasburg, Winchester Fraternal Order of Eagles 824, and Strasburg Fraternal Order of Eagles 4186. She was the wife of the late Charles Edward Oakley.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorene V. Hoover of Strasburg and Edna O. Brown of Winchester; two sons, Charles E. Oakley Jr. of Sterling and George W. Oakley of Zepp; a sister, Ruby E. McClung of Manassas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, March 11, at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, by the Rev. James Corbett.

Robert Louis Rosenberger

STRASBURG – Robert Louis Rosenberger, 63, died Friday, March 10, 2006.

Mr. Rosenberger was born July 3, 1942, in Strasburg, son of the late Wilmer Louis and Martha Catherine Windle Rosenberger. He was a retired carpenter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Rosenberger.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Eye Rosenberger; children, Mike Rosenberger of Toms Brook, Debbie Pitcock, Pam Rosenberger and companion Wade Bly, and Mark Rosenberger, all of Strasburg; grandchildren, Joshua Pitcock, Victoria Pitcock, Zachary Rosenberger, Tara Bly, Megan Bly, Jessica Bly, Alyssa Rosenberger and Brooklyn Rosenberger; great-grandchild, Khia Pitcock; and niece, Sherrie Putman of Strasburg.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, March 14, at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, by the Rev. William C. Taylor. Burial followed in St. Stephens cemetery, Strasburg.

David Allen White

WINCHESTER – David Allen White, 58, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at his home.

Mr. White was born on Jan. 26, 1948, in Elkins, W.Va., son of the late Sheffie Scott White and Mattie Lou Broughton Hawkins. He was a service manager of the Chevron Service Station in Winchester, a member of the American Legion Post 29 in Elkins and the Winchester Eagles and Elks. He was a Methodist by faith.

Surviving are a brother, Danny White of Strasburg and a sister, Sheila Yorgenson of Hutchinson, Kan.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at the Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. William C. Taylor officiating.

Ray Delroy Wilkins

WINCHESTER – Ray Delroy Wilkins, 70, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.

Mr. Wilkins was born May 30, 1935, in Shenandoah County, son of the late Lory Bell and Carrie Rickard Wilkins. He retired as a counter operator for O’Sullivan Corp. after 44 years. He attended New Dale Church of the Brethren and was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge 1283 and Winchester Eagles Aerie 824. He was the husband of the late Patricia Irene Webber Wilkins.

Surviving are his wife, Nina Ruth Combs Wilkins; two sons, Stephen A. Webber of Winchester and Keith Delroy Wilkins of West Virginia; a daughter, Sharon A. Rhodes of Baker, W.Va.; a stepson, Reginald Shoemaker of Baker, W.Va.; three stepdaughters, Nina Keeler of Strasburg, Shelby Wilson of Winchester and Michelle Frye of Mount Jackson; four sisters, Shirley Kucharski of Wareham, Mass., Juanita Ross, Freda Piper and Karen Smith, all of Winchester; a brother, Wayne Wilkins of White Post; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, March 11, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, by Pastor Mark Darezzo. Burial was private.

Dwight Worth Davis

Dwight Worth Davis, 79, of Towson, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Greater General Medical Center in Baltimore.

Mr. Davis was born June 23, 1926, in Tallahassee, Fla., son of the late David A. and Avis Sutton Davis. He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a civil engineer and executive with Canton Co. and Canton Railroad in Baltimore and a former realtor. He was a member of Loch Raven Baptist Church in Towson.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Broy Davis; daughter, Barbara Ann Davis of Ellicott City, Md.; two sons, Dwight Worth Davis Jr. of Mount Jackson and Dave Gregory Davis of Spring Grove, Pa.; brother, James Davis of Birmingham, Ala.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be private.
