Michael Hevener

Michael Layne Hevener, 40, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Hevener was born Aug. 7, 1967, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of Marie VanFossen Hevener and the late Ray Clinton Hevener.

He was self-employed in Lawn Care Service and attended Mount Pleasant Church of the Brethren in his youth.

On Nov. 9, 1992, he married Roberta Siever, who survives.

He is also survived by his children, Michael L. Hevener Jr., Quinton Hevener, Ashley Hevener, Brittany Hevener and Michaela Hevener, all at home; two brothers, Joseph R. Hevener of Harrisonburg and Dale C. Hevener of Bridgewater; three sisters, Wanda Hevener Good of Linville and Janet Hart and Bonita Giardina, both of Harrisonburg; and his grandmother, Louise VanFossen May of Staunton.

Terry Wyant and the Revs. Reuben Horst and Don Kuhns will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Church of the Brethren cemetery near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to RMH Blood Services, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Teresa Santamaria

Teresa Santamaria, 44, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Santamaria was born Feb. 10, 1964, in Mexico, and was the daughter of the late Cruz Castro and Guadalupe Quintana.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Inglesia Neuva Vida.

Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Gerardo Santamaria; two sons, Abel Santamaria and Gerardo Santamaria, both of Harrisonburg; five daughters, Liliana 'Lilly' Gonzales, Yoreni Santamaria, Ester Santamaria, Teresita Santamaria, and Crystal Santamaria, all of Harrisonburg; four brothers, Cruz Castro and Fernando Castro, both of Jacksonville, Texas, Abel Castro and Salvador Castro, both of Harrisonburg; three sisters, Juana Santamaria, Veronica Luna, and Yolanda Romero, all of Harrisonburg; and three grandchildren.

The Rev. Abel Castro will conduct the funeral 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday the funeral home.

Karla Dove

Karla Faye Dove, 45, of Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in Harrisonburg.

Ms. Dove was born Nov. 27, 1962, in Prince Georges County, Md., and was a daughter of Robert Lee and Nancy Dove of Timberville and Julia Virginia Shifflett Dove of Harrisonburg.

She was an accountant for Valley Kawasaki in Harrisonburg for many years. She graduated from National Business College with a degree in business.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Charles Scott Sisson of Anaheim, Calif.; a brother, Dwight Anthony 'Tony' Dove of Anaheim, Calif.; and two sisters, Sandra Lee Balas of Lacey Spring and Tina Louise Dove of Port Republic.

The Rev. Robbie Miller will conduct a memorial service 7 p.m. Monday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, where the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Monday and also following the service.

James Robert Shifflett, Jr.

James Robert Shifflett Jr., 45, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008.

Mr. Shifflett was born June 2, 1963, in Rockingham County and was the son of James Robert and Frances Taylor Shifflett.

He graduated from Spotswood High School in 1981 and was a director of quality and engineering for Cerro Fabricated Products in Weyers Cave for 27 years. He played softball and was a past member of the 257 Grocery and Southern Edition Softball teams. He was a member of St. Stephens and the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar, and also attended Cornerstone Church at the Lake.

On Sept. 19, 1987, he married Renee` Cook, who survives.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by two daughters, Megan Elizabeth and Kara Renee, both of Elkton; and one sister, Donna Hopkins of McGaheysville.

The Revs. Tom Yoder, Lucas Cook and Stuart Wood will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery in McGaheysville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cornerstone Christian School, 297 Cornerstone Lane, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

James C. Hensley

James Carroll Hensley, 72, of Elkton, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Hensley was born Oct. 21, 1935, in Rockingham County near Elkton, and was the son of the late James Wesley and Della Shifflett Hensley.

He retired from Dean's Tree Service and was a member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his companion, Lena P. Shifflett of Elkton; a son, James C. Hensley Jr. of Shenandoah; two daughters, Teresa Hensley of Elkton and Susan Fay McInerney of Shenandoah; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Calvin Shifflett and Frank Shifflett, both of Pennsylvania and Marilyn Shifflett of Shenandoah; eight stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Pastor Carter Dean will conduct a graveside service 3 p.m. today at Elk Run cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elkton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 146, Elkton, VA 22827.

Arrangements are by Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Helen Frances Good Kisling

Helen Frances Good Kisling, 79, of Elkton, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Kisling was born April 25, 1929, in Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Wilmer 'Jack' and Addie Breeden Good.

Mrs. Kisling was a lifetime resident of the area and retired from (Genie) Alliance Manufacturing in Shenandoah after 26 years and was a homemaker.

On July 26, 1946, she married Oliver Richard Kisling Sr., who died Dec. 17, 2000. Helen is survived by sons, Harold W. Kisling, Norman Scott Kisling, both of Elkton, and Danny Ray Kisling of Stanley; daughters, Brenda Yancey of Elkton, Joyce Stepp of Shenandoah; sisters, Pansy Shifflett, Ann Fielding, both of Elkton, Nellie Meadows of Bealeton, Deloris Frazier of Gainesville and Betty Campbell of Shenandoah; brothers, Gene Good, W.C. Good, both of Elkton; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by a son, Oliver R. 'Ricky' Kisling Jr., and a number of siblings.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Elder Benjamin Cubbage officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Peter's cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Kisling home at any time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elkton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 152, Elkton, VA 22827.

Dr. Donald M. Callahan

Dr. Donald Morris Callahan, 80, of Harrisonburg, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 11, at his home at Sunnyside Retirement Community.

Dr. Callahan was born on March 10, 1928, in Roanoke, and was the son of the late Frank Scott Callahan and Olivia Morris Callahan.

He was raised in Roanoke and graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in 1946. He was a graduate of Roanoke College in 1950 and the Medical College of Virginia in 1954. Dr. Callahan interned at St. Vincent DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

He practiced General Medicine in Bayside and Galax, Va. Dr. Callahan entered the Army Medical Corps and completed his Radiology Residency Program at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Callahan was Chief of Radiology at Martin Army Hospital in Fort Benning, Ga. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1967.

After serving his country, he moved to Harrisonburg in 1967 and joined the Radiology Department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where he practiced medicine until 1993.

During his medical career, Dr. Callahan served as President of the Medical Department, President of the General Medical Staff, President of the Rockingham Medical Society, President of the Medical Society of the Valley of Virginia, Board Member of Shenandoah Shared Hospital Services for 15 years, Chairman of the Radiology Department and Chairman of the RMH Executive Committee for six years.

Dr. Callahan was a Fellow in the American College of Radiology (ACR). Dr. Callahan was a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Society of Virginia, Radiological Society of North America, Mid-Shenandoah Radiology Society, and the American College of Radiology.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg serving as Deacon and Elder. He is also a retired member of the Elk's Club, Lodge 450, of Harrisonburg.

On April 30, 1955, he married Ruby Neal Jones, who survives.

Also surviving are five sons: Timothy W. Callahan and wife, Joy, of Charlotte, N.C., Patrick S. Callahan and wife, Valerie, of Midlothian, Va., Daniel K. Callahan and wife, Anne, of Harrisonburg, Donald S. Callahan of Sonoma, Calif., and Steven M. Callahan and wife, Kelly, of Charlottesville, Va.; nine grandchildren, Emily and Brad Callahan of Charlotte, N.C., Ryan and Rachael Callahan of Midlothian, Va., Amy and Carrie Callahan of Harrisonburg, Sean Callahan of Sonoma, Calif., and Matthew and Olivia Callahan of Charlottesville, Va.

Also surviving are a sister, Olivia Callahan Mattingly of Annandale, Va., and six nieces and nephews. Dr. Callahan was preceded in death by his brother, Keith Staples Callahan, and a sister, June Callahan Carper.

Dr. Callahan was a kind and gentle man who loved his God, his family, his country and the Shenandoah Valley.

A private burial service will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg with the Rev. J. Doug Sterrett and the Rev. Paul O'Gorek presiding. Family will receive friends after the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.

Donna Belle Shaffer Atkins Funk

Donna Belle Shaffer Atkins Funk, 57, of Penn Laird, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at her home after a short battle with cancer. Mrs. Funk was born April 10, 1951, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Ray and Hazel Bricker Shaffer.

Donna graduated from Page County High School and was a lifetime resident of the Valley. She was a licensed realtor and had previously been employed by the Department of Motor Vehicles and more recently with the Harrisonburg Auto Auction. She enjoyed gardening, spending quality time at the beach and most importantly time with friends and family.

On Jan. 12, 2008, she married Edward William 'Ed' Funk, who survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Nicole Lynn 'Nikki' Corley and husband, John, of Harrisonburg; a stepson, Eric E. Funk and wife, Patricia, of Memphis, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Adrien E. Funk of Harrisonburg; an uncle, Harry Willard Bricker of Shenandoah; and a very special granddaughter, Grace Denise Corley.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Keith Alan Atkins and aunt, Dorothy Hunt.

A memorial service will be held 6:30 Wednesday evening, Aug. 13, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 6:30 prior to the service or anytime at the family home in Penn Laird.

The family is accepting flowers but also provide option for memorial contributions to be made to Ovations for the Cure (Ovarian Cancer), 251 West Central St., Suite 32, Natick, MA 01760 or the Rockingham/Harrisonburg S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 413, Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

Clara Rebecca Meadows

Clara Rebecca Meadows, 88, of Harrisonburg, died Aug. 11, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Meadows was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Hot Springs, Va., and was the daughter of the late Arthur H. and Flossie Mae Smiley Chittum.

Mrs. Meadows moved to Harrisonburg at an early age and was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church. She worked at Virginia Garment Company for 14 years and Metro Pants Factory for 18 years before retiring.

Her husband, Lloyd Edgar Meadows, preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 2006. Mrs. Meadows is survived by a sister, Irene Ruddle of Harrisonburg, and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Meadows was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth H. Rush, and two brothers, Herbert L. Chittum and Arthur B. Chittum.

The Rev. Jim Grogan Jr. will conduct a graveside service 11:00 Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the Mount Crawford cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening (tonight) from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Christopher McCarthy

Christopher Cornell McCarthy, 49, of Grottoes, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Mr. McCarthy was born July 17, 1959, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of Carrie Helen Boggs McCarthy of Grottoes and the late Richard Allen McCarthy Sr.

He had worked in sales in several states and was currently employed at Days Inn in Harrisonburg. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by four brothers, Richard Allen McCarthy of Germany, Zachary McCarthy of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Eric and Levi McCarthy, both of Harrisonburg; and two sisters, Freda McCarthy of Harrisonburg and Cheryl Knight of New Jersey.

The Rev. Jeffery Myers, Timothy Edwards, and Eugene Souder will conduct the funeral 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kyger Funeral Home, 3173 Spotswood Trail, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 to help with burial cost.
