Janice Louise Turner

Janice Louise Turner, 67, of Shenandoah, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at her home.

Miss Turner was born Dec. 6, 1941, in Page County, and was the daughter of the late Hubbert M. and Lena Rhinehart Turner. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Irene Cardin.

She was a member of the Baptist Fellowship Church in Stanley for 38 years. She loved church and family, especially her great-great nieces and nephews.

Survivors include a brother, Dale Turner and wife, Rose, of Elkton; nephews and nieces, Roy Cardin and wife, Kathy, of Shenandoah, Paul Cardin and wife, Vickie, of Elkton, Dale Turner Jr. of Harrisonburg, Christa Dofflemyer of Elkton, Joyce Dofflemyer, Glorine Thompson, Barbara Williams; great nieces, Tina Wallace and husband, Dwight, Tabatha Rodriguez and fiance', Ricky, Amy Gaskins and husband, Trace; great nephews, David Breeden and Tim Cardin; great-great nieces and nephew, Catherine Wallace, Bailee Gaskins and Mitchel Gaskins.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Baptist Fellowship Church in Stanley with the Rev. Donnie Sherfey officiating. Burial will follow in the Rest Haven cemetery in Shenandoah.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Friends may also call at the home of Miss Turner at any time.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Baptist Fellowship Church, 934 Judy Lane Ext., Stanley, VA 22851.

Judith Wentz Schramm

Judith Wentz Schramm, 90, of Falls Church, Va., passed away on Jan. 16, 2009 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Va. Mrs. Schramm was born on Feb. 14, 1918, in Middletown, Conn., and was the daughter of the late Gus Wentz and Judith Ekstrom Wentz Johnson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, CMSgt Edward Harry Schramm, retired 1254th Air Transport Sqd., USAF, who preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1993.

Mrs. Schramm, a homemaker, worked at Colt Arms in Hartford, Conn. during World War II. She was baptized and confirmed in the Swedish Covenant Church in Middletown, Conn.

She is survived by two daughters, J. Susanne Simmons and husband, Claude, of Churchville, Va. and Donna C. Marshall of Williamsburg, Va. and two grandchildren, Amanda Simmons and Hannah Simmons, both of Staunton, Va.

A graveside service will be held at Arlington National cemetery in Virginia at a later date.

Ila V. Kite

Ila Virginia Yancey Kite, 69, of Elkton, passed away Jan. 22, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Kite was born Dec. 8, 1939, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Raymond Yancey and Elsie Yancey Hensley.

She attended the East Point United Methodist Church and the Shenandoah Pentecostal Church. Mrs. Kite was a homemaker and loved gardening. She had worked at Alliance in Shenandoah and E.A. Breeden Construction.

On Feb. 18, 1957, she married Cline E. Kite, who preceded her in death on May 22, 2004.

She is survived by three daughters, Rose Marie May and husband, Gary, of Shenandoah, Judith Ann Mowbray and husband, Keith, of Elkton, Joyce Elaine Lam and husband, Greg, of Elkton; three brothers, Bobby Yancey of Elkton, Harry Yancey of Shenandoah, Eddie Yancey of McGaheysville; one sister, Faye Oakley of Scottsville; four grandchildren, Jeremy May, Justin Lam, Emily Lam, Hannah Mowbray; four great-grandchildren, Mikayla Riggleman, Michael Ritchie, Patrick Sly, Nicholas May; numerous nephews and nieces. Mrs. Kite was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Breeden, and a brother, Joe Yancey.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with the Revs. Carrie Talbott and Mike Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the East Point cemetery near Elkton.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton or at the home at any time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elkton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 152, Elkton, VA 22827.

Joseph Kovach

Joseph Kovach of Harrisonburg, Va., passed at home in his sleep Jan. 16, 2009. Last Monday he celebrated his 93rd birthday with his family at home. He was born Jan. 12, 1916, in Woodbridge, N.J., the son of the late Andrew and Julia Gyenes Kovach.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. He was a World War II Army veteran having served with the 33rd Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He retired from the plant, Merck & Co., Rahway, N.J., in 1977 after 33 years. In 1995, he moved to Harrisonburg to be near his daughter and her family after residing for 42 years in Asbury Park, N.J.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Helen Patricia Danko Kovach, an infant son, Joseph, two brothers, and two sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Theresa and her husband, Bryan S. Eckstein of Harrisonburg, Va.; and his five adored grandchildren, Bryan J. Eckstein of Charlottesville, Va., Christopher Eckstein of Denver, Colo., Danny Eckstein of Charlottesville, Va., and Michael and Michelle Eckstein of Harrisonburg, Va.

He is also survived by two sisters, Julia Buickerood of Scotland, Pa., and Madeline and her husband, Howard Munn, of Woodbridge, N.J.; a brother, Steven Kovach and his wife, Margaret, of McCleansville, N.C., and numerous nephews and nieces.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Harrisonburg with Father Thomas Mattingly officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

A Rosary Service was held 6 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg followed by a time of visitation until 8 p.m.

Eula Sipe Hensley

Eula Sipe Hensley, 94, formerly of 237 Bloomer Springs Road, McGaheysville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Life Care Center in New Market.

Mrs. Hensley was born Feb. 14, 1914, at Yancey near Elkton, and was the daughter of the late William F. and Fannie C. Burriss Sipe. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Clara Sipe Shifflett, Bessie Sipe James and Lottie Sipe Hensley, four brothers, Robert, William M., Jesse and Dorsey Sipe, a granddaughter, Debra Hensley, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Jones Hensley.

She attended the St. Stephen Episcopal School at Berrytown near Elkton. She was a homemaker and was caregiver for her invalid mother, worked briefly at Casey Jones and also worked for 20 years at Virginia Egg Producers. During her lifetime she shared her joy of cooking with family and many friends. She particularly enjoyed taking her homemade coconut custard pies to the sick and shut-ins. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Independent Church, which was very important to her.

On Aug. 28, 1931, she married her husband of 61 years, Murphy Vernon Hensley, who passed away on July 17, 1992. She is survived by two sons, Murphy F. Hensley of Round Hill, Va., Larry Hensley and wife, Leotta, of Stafford, Va.; a daughter, Janice Marie Spitzer and husband, Clay, of Timberville; three children reared in her home, a niece, Maxine Hedrick and husband, Junior; a great niece, Mary Jo Oddo Halstead and fiance', Philip Morrissey; and a nephew, Jesse E. 'Sonny' Sipe and wife, Frances, of Elkton; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Gerald Meeks and the Rev. Brad Lewis will conduct the funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at the Blue Ridge Independent Church near Elkton. Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet cemetery in McGaheysville.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Hensley is at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, where friends may call.

Richard Leroy Ritchie, 65
Date of Death: Dec 13, 2010

Richard Leroy Ritchie, 65, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Monday, December 13, 2010.

Mr. Ritchie was born on February 15, 1945 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late F.P. and Gatha Frank Ritchie, Jr. He was employed at Victor Tube for many years.

Surviving are three children, Elijah Ritchie of Harrisonburg, Tina Milstead of McGaheysville, Donna Ritchie of Culpeper, a brother, Donnie Ritchie of Harrisonburg, four grandchildren, Brandon Mottesheard, Cody Ritchie, Hunter Ritchie, Maryssa Mottesheard and a sister in law, Vista Ritchie.

Mr. Ritchie was preceded in death by a brother, Jarvis Richie and nephew Jerry Ritchie.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Singers Glen cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home at anytime.

The casket will be closed.

Alice Mae Lamb

Alice Mae Lamb, 100, of McGaheysville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at her Willow Estates Home in Penn Laird. Mrs. Lamb was born on March 30, 1908, in Johnstown, Md., and was a daughter of the late Samuel and Clara Warner Bowings.

Alice was a homemaker and had previously been employed with the Elkton Farm Bureau and was a co-owner of Mother's Bakery in downtown Harrisonburg. She was a member of the McGaheysville United Methodist Church, member of the Extension Homemakers, and charter member of the McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she was known as the pie lady.

On July 5, 1924, she married Claude Cecil Lamb, who preceded her in death on June 9, 1995. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin "Gene" Lamb and Carl "Sharkey" Lamb; five brothers, Melvin, Charles, Frank, Lester and Roger; two sisters, Leo and Naomi; and one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.

Surviving family include two sons, Charles C. Lamb and wife, June, of McGaheysville and Lawrence D. Lamb and wife, Karin, of Kilmarnock; a daughter, Verrell L. Birt of Bridgewater; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren, three step-great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. (today) Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at McGaheysville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Lagerveld and Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.

Arvil Lee "Slim" Whetzel

Arvil Lee 'Slim' Whetzel, 73, of Harrisonburg, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Whetzel was born June 22, 1935, in Pocahontas County, W.Va., and was the son of the late Arthur and Odie Whetzel. Arvil was a truck driver for Hartman Trucking and Superior Concrete for many years before his retirement.

Slim is survived by two sons, Wayne Lee Whetzel of Timberville and Richard Alan Whetzel of Timberville, and stepson Jerry Michael Fulk of Broadway; one daughter, Melissa Whetzel of Bridgewater; four brothers, Wilson Phares, Harold Phares, Loye Phares and Ronald Whetzel; four sisters, Ann Hartman, Mary Mitchell, Virginia Case and Thelma Payton; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Pastor Glenn Turner officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Jerry W. Fitzgerald

Jerry Wayne Fitzgerald, 63, of Linville, passed away on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Fitzgerald was born on Sept. 29, 1945, in Augusta County, and was the son of the late Stanley and Mary Lowery Fitzgerald.

Jerry worked in the service department for Extinguisher Sales and Service in Harrisonburg. Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict from 1965 until 1967. He was also a member of the Shenandoah Valley American Legion No. 188 and the AmVets No.7.

Mr. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie A. Fitzgerald.

On July 7, 2007, he married Annie Smith, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by one son, Danny Fitzgerald of Harrisonburg; one daughter, Lisa Fitzgerald; and one stepson, Michael Hunter Smith; one stepdaughter, Lurena Lynn Brown of Tennessee; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at 7 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Wayne Wright officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

At Mr. Fitzgerald's request, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post No. 188, 350 Waterman Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.

Dawn Delight Conley Smythers

Dawn Delight Conley Smythers, 52, of Louisa and formerly of Elkton, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009.

Mrs. Smythers was born April 15, 1956, in Harrisonburg and was the daughter of the late David Jackson and Arbutus Virginia Meadows Conley. She grew up in the Elkton community and was a 1974 graduate of Elkton High School. She was a member of the Church of Solsburg, near Elkton and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Smythers is survived by a daughter, Chaya D. Smythers of Louisa; two brothers, D.J. Conley of Tampa, Fla., and Joel W. Conley of Hampton; a sister, Connie Ray Conley of Charlottesville; a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mrs. Smythers was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie K. Conley and Brenda E. Conley and a brother, Murtice L. Conley.

The Revs. Robert Aszbach and Morgan Kinney will conduct a memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton.

Juanita Lois Loud

Juanita Lois Davis Loud, 73, of Springfield, died Jan. 9, 2009, at the home of her sister in Elkton.

Mrs. Loud was born June 14, 1935, in Rockingham County near Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Paul Vernon and Lillian Kisling Davis.

Juanita attended Humes Run School near Elkton and was baptized at St. Peter's United Methodist Church. She retired from ABBCO Industrial Supply as a sales representative. Her previous employment had been for Crown Supply in sales and as a manager of a Bridal Shop and Russell Stover Candy, all in Springfield. She was also a member of a Garden Club in Springfield, enjoyed bowling and was a very loving and giving person.

On Aug. 21, 1961, she married Gordon W. Loud, who preceded her in death in February of 1973. Survivors include two brothers, Paul Davis Jr. of Elkton, Orman (Pete) Davis of Callahan, Fla.; two sisters, Shirley D. Campbell, special brother-in-law, Franklin Campbell, Gale Good, all of Elkton; special nephews, Jeff and Kevin Campbell; two great nephews, Jordan and (Little) Benny Good and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday (today) Jan. 12, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Peter's cemetery near Elkton.

The family will receive friends one hour (1-2 p.m.) prior to the service on Monday. Friends may also call at the home of her sister, Shirley Campbell, at anytime.
