Don-Rice Richards

Don-Rice Richards, 82, of Penn Laird, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Richards was born in Iowa and was the son of the late Rice and Alta Mary Foster Richards.

Mr. Richards was a veteran of World War II for the U.S. Army and was an accounting professor at James Madison University. He married Colleen Adair Richards on Sept. 9, 1950, who preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 2005.

Mr. Richards is survived by a close friend, Stephanie Stratton.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Franklin L. Paris Jr.

Franklin Lane Paris Jr. entered into rest on Jan. 7, 2009, in Harrisonburg, Va., after years of suffering from PSP disorder. Born March 4, 1933, in Terre Haute, Ind.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Judy. Frank was a beloved father to Kari (Mike), Christy Johnson, Steve (Kathy) and Janet (Jim), grandfather to Nicole, Patrick, Meghan, Thomas, Casey, Jonathan, Vasili and Gregory. He is also survived by his former wife, Barbara, and his sister, Sharon.

He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and received BS and MS degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University. He was employed by Sandia Corp for six years and the CIA for 30 years.

Frank loved adventure and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, water skiing and scuba diving. Everyone who knew Frank will miss him.

A service will be held at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. A celebration of his life will follow at Cally's in Harrisonburg, Va.

Mary "Curly" Elizabeth Shifflett Kite

Mary "Curly" Elizabeth Shifflett Kite, 73, of Shenandoah, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Mrs. Kite was born Sept. 29, 1935, in Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Wilson W. Shifflett and Gracie Lee Morris Shifflett.

Mrs. Kite was a homemaker and loved her family, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her family and attended the Shenandoah Assembly of God Church.

On Aug. 8, 1953, she married Robert "Bobby" Lewis Kite, who preceded her in death on May 12, 2003.

Survivors include one son, Roger Kite and wife, Kathy, of Elkton; three daughters, Sandra Dovel and husband, Odell, Kathy Dean and husband, Buddy, and Tammy Meadows and husband, Junior, all of Elkton; two brothers, Raymond Shifflett and Fred Shifflett; five sisters, Phyllis Propes, who was raised as a daughter, and husband, Charles, Lena Shifflett, Margie Dean and husband, Arnold, Ruby Clemens and husband, Oliver, and Frances Herring and husband, Bucky; five grandchildren, Wayne Dovel, Carl Meadows, Lisa Shifflett, Nikki Lucas and Rodney Propes; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Shifflett and Skylar Shifflett, and one great-grandchild on the way, Abigail Faith Meadows; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Shenandoah Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Carter Dean and Rick Kerfoot officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter's cemetery in Elkton.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church or at the home of her daughter, Sandra Dovel in Elkton, anytime.

William Winston Pendleton

William Winston Pendleton, 93, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at his daughter Alice's home in Dayton.

He was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Cuckoo, Louisa County, the son of the late William Barret Pendleton and Norvel Winston Pendleton. After graduating from Apple Grove High School, he went to work for Dupont Chemical Company and then later for First and Merchants National Bank in Richmond.

Bill met his future wife, Julia Helen Furnival, when they attended the inauguration of President Roosevelt at the invitation of relatives. Bill became a member of the National Guard, but enlisted in the Army after Pearl Harbor. Before going overseas, Bill married Julia on April 18, 1942, at All Saints' Church in Chevy Chase, Md.

During the war he served in the U.S. Army, 2nd Bn., 13th Inf. Reg.; 8th Inf. Div. and earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He saw action in France and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge, and earned a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

After the war, Bill returned to Richmond where his first daughter, Juliana, was born in 1946, and his second daughter, Helen, was born in 1949. He returned to work at First and Merchants and was very active in St. Mathew's Episcopal Church.

The Rev. Dick Baker and the Rev. Jim Lincoln encouraged him to become a minister, and he entered Virginia Theological Seminary in 1953 and graduated in 1956. During this time his third daughter, Alice, was born in 1955. Bill's first parish was St. John's, Centreville and Christ Episcopal Church, Chantilly, 1956-1958. He came to Beckford Parish (Emmanuel, Woodstock and St. Andrew's, Mount Jackson) in the fall of 1958 and served faithfully until his retirement in 1982. Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Bill and Julia lived in their cabin -- and gardened -- in Fort Valley until they moved to Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg in 1993. At Sunnyside, Bill continued gardening, pool playing and became an accomplished putt-putt golfer. Julia died in Jan. 1997. The last service Bill performed was his granddaughter Sara's wedding in 2004. He moved to his daughter Alice's home in Dayton in April 2009.

He is survived by his three daughters: Juliana Moomaw and husband, Ron of Orkney Springs, Helen Leavy and husband, Brian of Albuquerque, N.M., and Alice Ensley of Dayton.; his three granddaughters: Sara Moomaw and husband, Brian Hyatt of Alexandria, Kate Moomaw of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kerry Ensley of Dayton; his former son-in-law, Nelson Ensley of Yorktown, and a niece, Judy Burcham.

He was preceded in death by his foster sister, Virginia, and a niece, Kitty Lee.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Sunnyside. A second service and interment of ashes will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, at Shrine Mont. The family will receive friends following each service.

George Franklin Anderson

George Franklin Anderson, 83, of Weyers Cave, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Anderson was born on Nov. 5, 1925, in Augusta County, and was the son of the late Edward Lewis and Mary Margarette Sweet Anderson.

George worked for Shank Beverage Co., and most recently worked for Virginia Well Drilling before retiring in 1990. He also owned and operated Anderson's Water Hauling for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, and was a member of the Rion-Bowman VFW Post No. 632.

He is survived by a daughter, Penny Sue Anderson of Harrisonburg; a son, James Edward Anderson of Westminster, Md.; and special friends, Larry and Barbara Harold. He was preceded in death by a son, George Franklin Anderson Jr.; brothers, Carl, Roy and William; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Frances Price.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

Ella Lorraine Smith Chapman

Ella Lorraine Smith Chapman, 82, resident of White Birch Estates in Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday May 27, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Chapman was born on June 23, 1926, in Nathalie, and was the daughter of the late William Berry and Ruby Hite Smith.

Mrs. Chapman graduated from Volens High School in 1943 as the Valedictorian of her class. Following her graduation she attended Longwood College. She was an elementary school teacher for Cumberland County prior to moving to Harrisonburg in 1959.

She was a member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church, and along with her husband, was a founder and charter member of the Virginia Avenue Baptist Mission, now known as West Side Baptist Church. During over 42 years of unconditional and loving service at West Side, she played piano, taught Bible school and Sunday school, chaired numerous committees, and was active with the Friendship Circle, and Young at Heart. Mrs. Chapman had also served as president of the Women's Missionary Union for the state of Virginia. She was a member of the Harrisonburg Garden Club, Suburban Friends, and was a volunteer with the RMH Ladies Auxiliary for many years. Lorraine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.

On Nov. 2, 1946, she married LeRoy Bagby Chapman who preceded her in death on May 23, 2004.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Bradford Smith.

Mrs. Chapman is survived by her son, LeRoy 'Lee' Bagby Chapman Jr., and wife, Sherri, of Harrisonburg; her daughter, Mary Louise Glick and husband, Randy, of Dayton; two sisters, Wilma Smith West and husband, Tom, of Nathalie, and Betty Smith Conner and husband, Roy, of Mint Spring; four grandchildren, Amy Lorraine Chapman Breeden and husband, Jeffrey, William Mason Chapman and wife, Amy, Bethany 'Jill' Glick Brashears and husband, Thomas, and Anna Glick Wilhelm and husband, Eric; two great-grandchildren, Casey Amos Breeden and Alanah Jonelle Brashears; a sister-in-law, Vivian Glass Smith of Nathalie; and a brother-in-law, Fred Bondurant Chapman of Wolftown.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Harrisonburg Baptist Church, with the Revs. Charles Anderson, George Fletcher and Dr. Jack Mercer officiating. The burial will be held on Monday, June 1, 2009, at West View cemetery in Farmville at noon. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Friends may also visit the home of Lee and Sherri Chapman at anytime.

Kenneth R. Linhoss, Sr.

Kenneth Ray Linhoss Sr., 83, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Linhoss was born on June 6, 1925, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Weldon Conrad and Maude Irene Tutwiler Linhoss.

After attending Bridgewater High School, Ray enlisted with the United States Marine Corps.

During his service in World War II, Mr. Linhoss was wounded twice by shrapnel and was a recipient of a Purple Heart.

When he returned from WWII, Ray was a self-employed brick mason for more than 50 years.

Ray was a life member of Hose Company No. 4.

He attended Providence Baptist Church in Harrisonburg and was a member of Rion-Bowman VFW Post No. 632.

Mr. Linhoss was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Virginia Linhoss, in October of 2008. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald Linhoss; a granddaughter, Stacey Lawson; and a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Linhoss; one brother, John Linhoss; and three sisters, Helen Taylor, Peggy Huffman, and Lucille Argenbright.

Mr. Linhoss is survived by a daughter, Linda Lawson and husband, Gary, of Purcellville, Va.; two sons, Kenny Linhoss and wife, Judy, of Bridgewater, and Charles Linhoss of Harrisonburg; one sister, Phyllis Douglas of Harrisonburg; one granddaughter, Gina Burns; three great-grandchildren, Trevor Burns, Tanner Burns, and Kylie Jenkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Revs. Lloyd Sprinkle and Tim McAvoy officiating.

Burial will follow at Spaders Church cemetery near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8 pm at the funeral home.

Lucille G. Morris

Lucille Gooden Morris, 90, longtime resident of Port Republic, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the Bridgewater Nursing Home.

Mrs. Morris was born on Oct. 27, 1918, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Isaac and Cora Morris Gooden.

She was raised in the home of her aunt and uncle, Scott and Ruby Gooden.

Lucille was a floor lady with Metro Pants until her retirement in 1980.

She was a member of the Mount Olive Brethren Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and taught Bible school for many years.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

On July 3, 1937, she married Alfred Benjamin Morris, who preceded her in death in 1994.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Morris Rexrode, who is survived by her husband, Sevie L. 'Rex' Rexrode of Grottoes, Va.

Mrs. Morris is survived by one son, Wayne A. Morris and wife, Stephanie, of Elkton; two daughters, Barbara 'Bobbie' Ann Rogers of Montgomery Village, Md., and Linda Lee Hottinger and husband, Lonnie, of Weyers Cave; one brother, Scott Gooden; four sisters, Elizabeth 'Bet' Huffer, Thelma Schools, Janet 'Pat' Trammel, and Maxine Gooden; four grandchildren, Kevin Rexrode and wife, Rachel, Lynne` Rhodes and husband, Dennie, Greta Vandevander and husband, Allen, and Tamera Breeden; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Mount Olive Brethren Church in Pineville with Dr. Fredric Miller officiating.

Burial will follow at the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Friends may also visit at the home of her daughter, Linda Hottinger in Weyers Cave, at any time.
