William H. Hicks
William H. Hicks, 57, of State Farm, formerly of Amonate, died Oct. 30, 2005 in State Farm, following a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Charlie Walter Johnson
Charlie Walter Johnson, 60, of Gaithersburg, MD, died Oct. 17, 2005 in a Gaithersburg hospital.
Born April 25, 1945 in Council, he was a son of the late Paris and Martha Ball Johnson.
He was employed by Orndonoff and Spaid, for 36 years, until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Ebb Johnson, Columbus Johnson, Paul Johnson, Stuart Johnson, Allen Johnson, and Fred Johnson.
Survivors: wife of 32 years, Shirley; daughters, Julie Bradette and husband, Ivan, Carolyn Reid and husband, Zak, and Missi Johnson and fiancé, Ryan, all of Gaithersburg; grandchildren, Heather Ashley, Cassie Marie, Ryan Michael, and Sarah Emily; sister, Ida Virginia of Frederick, MD; brother, Beverly Johnson of Council; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and burial were handled by DeVol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg, MD.

Lora Mae Jones
Lora Mae Jones, 89, of Richlands, died Oct. 24, 2005 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Wise County, she was a daughter of the late David Mosco and Margaret Ellen Ringley Ritchie, both Wise County natives.
She had made her home in Richlands for 69 years and attended the First United Methodist Church in Richlands.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ewing B. Jones; one daughter, Cathie Jones Griffith; four sons, Ronald E., Benny H., Dennis A. and Larry Jones; three brothers; and four sisters.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughter, Susan Jones of Gainesville, FL; son, K.C. Jones and wife, Eileen, of Richlands; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. in the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Vonley Pruitt officiating.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Mary Jackson Joyce
Mary Jackson Joyce, 79, of Steelsburg, died Oct. 29, 2005 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Elisha and Lou Carter McGlothlin.
She was a member of the VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell Co. Chapter 31 D.A.V.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dobber Jackson, and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors: husband, Raymond Joyce; daughters, Linda Butcher and husband, Samuel, of Beavercreek, OH, Elaina Underwood and husband, Danny G., of Richlands; son, Doug Jackson, Sr. of Richlands; sister, Marie Shelton of Pounding Mill; stepchildren, Roy Lee Joyce and Rick Joyce, both of Richlands, Mary Lynn Grizzel of Greensboro, NC, Phyllis Sword of Belfast; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and many friends and neighbors.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 31 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. J.C. Johnson officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Ronald L. Keene
Ronald L. Keene, 58, of Bristol, VA, formerly of Richlands, died Oct. 25, 2005 in Arlington.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Betty Dixon Keene, of Richlands, and the late Leonard Paxton Keene.
He was a 1965 graduate of Richlands High School and was a former employee of Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation. He made his home in the Bristol, VA, area the past nine years and was a cell technician for Dana Corporation. He was a member of the Tennessee Ave. Baptist Church in Bristol, TN.
Additional survivors: wife, Donna Smith Keene; son, Zachary Steven Keene of the home; brother, Steve Keene and wife Terri of Murfreesboro, TN; sister, Donna Harman and husband, Robert, of Paintlick; mother-in-law, Ruby Jean Smith of Raven; brothers-in-law, Steve Smith and wife, Sharon, and Greg Smith and wife, Diane, all of Richlands; Gerald Smith and wife, Glena, of Kingsport, TN, Mike Smith and wife, Denise, of Swords Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Akard Funeral Home Chapel in Bristol, TN, Oct. 27 after 6 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 7 p.m. with Rev. Joe Hudson officiating. He was returned to the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands Oct. 28, where the family received friends after 5 p.m. Committal services were conducted Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-Cities Christian Schools, 1500 Hwy. 75, Blountville, TN 37617, Attn: Pat Yelton.

Maude Fleshman Smith
Maude Fleshman Smith, 98, of Pounding Mill, went to be with the Lord Oct. 24, 2005, after declining health for several years.
She was born April 11, 1907 in Bluefield, VA, to the late James W. and Myrtle Wallace Fleshman.
She was a graduate of Graham High School and Radford University in 1965. She started her teaching career in a one-room school at Smith Ridge, taught at Trinity House and ended her teaching career at Richlands Elementary with over 40 years of service. She was loved by many of her students. She was a member of Richlands Church of God.
She was the widow of Claude Smith.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Roy and Ted Fleshman; two sisters, Mildred Dale Pearson and Vera Blackwell; and one grandson, Dewayne Smith.
Survivors: daughter, Sandra Verbridge and husband, Ronald, of Conyers, GA; son, Ronald C. Smith of Rt. 1 Pounding Mill; sisters, Wilma Bowers and husband, Jim, and Edna Fleshman, all of Mullins, WV; grandson, Jeremy Christopher Smith; granddaughter, Donna Marie Smith; several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Corene Angles, Sandy Johnson, Total Home Care; and niece, Billie Anne Trent.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Martha Jane Surface
Martha Jane Monk Surface, 57, of North Tazewell, died Oct. 27, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
Born Dec. 1, 1947 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of Yvonne Davis Monk of North Tazewell and the late Kermitt C. Monk.
She was a graduate of Tazewell High School and attended East Tennessee State University. She was employed by Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands and Tazewell Community Hospital, Tazewell.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lafayette and Pansy Brewster Monk and Claude and Arra Catherine Brooks Davis.
Additional survivors: daughter, Elizabeth Barco and husband, Joe, of Richmond; son, Daniel Huffard Surface, III of Garner, NC; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Anne Russell and husband, William, of Philadelphia, TN, Elizabeth (Betty) Melvin and husband, Douglas, of Burkes Garden; grandchildren, Keely Davis Barco and Zachary Joseph Barco of Richmond; and nephews, Kermitt Melvin and wife, Nina, of Winchester, Eric Melvin and wife, Kristin, of Lewisville, NC, Andrew Russell and wife, Tracie, of Sevierville, TN, and Keith Russell and wife, Audrey, of Philadelphia, TN.
A “celebration of life” service was held Oct. 30 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Eddie Nash officiating.

Sissie Juanita Tackett
Sissie Juanita Tackett, 62, of Dismal, died Oct. 31, 2005.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Buchanan Funeral Service in Keen Mountain.

Betty Divor Tibbs
Betty Divor Tibbs, 73, of Bluefield, VA, died Oct. 24, 2005 in a Richmond hospital.
Born in Bluefield, VA, she was a daughter of the late Edward and J’Nan Devor.
She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church and a member of RSVP.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Edward Tibbs, Sr. and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors: daughters, Diane Jenkins of Bluefield, VA, Donna Buckner-Eichel and husband, Chuck, of Richmond; sons, Samuel E. Tibbs, Jr. of Falls Mills, Jeffrey Tibbs and wife, Penny, of Bluefield, VA; bothers, Robert Devor of Utah, Leon Devor of Bluefield, VA, Leon Devor of Bluefield, WV; sister, Beulah Toth of Tennessee; grandchildren, Thomas Yost of Atlanta, GA; Bryan Buckner of Summerville, SC, Blake Buckner of Harrisonburg, Amanda Tibbs of Richmond, Tyler Tibbs of Bluefield, VA, Emily Tibbs of Falls Mills; and great-grandchildren, Josielyn and Mallory Buckner and Anna Yost.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.
Burial followed at the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Ronald Vernon Wright
Ronald Vernon Wright, 57, of the Dry Fork community of North Tazewell, died Oct. 30, 2005 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born Nov. 15, 1947, he was a son of the late Kelly F. and Mary Hall Wright.
He enjoyed restoring vintage cars and playing horseshoes. He dearly loved his grandson, Nicolas Wright. He enjoyed the company of his long time companion Heidi, his dog.
Additional survivors: wife, Linda Barber Wright; son, Ronnie Wright and wife, Lisa, of Front Royal; stepsons, Brian Crisp of Chantilly, Paul Crisp of Franklin, NC; step granddaughters, Megan and Natasha Crisp; sisters, Janice Stump and husband, Randy, and Donna Wyatt and husband, Jesse, all of Roanoke, Elizabeth Kitts and husband, Emory, of Tazewell; brothers, Leonard Wright and wife, Linda, and Danny Wright and wife, Pam, all of North Tazewell; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Barber and Betty; brothers-in-law, Tommy Barber and wife, Cindy, and Clifford Barber and wife, Cathy, all of Richardsville; and numerous special nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with The Rev. Don Elswick officiating.
Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Nov. 2 at the funeral home.

John Thomas Ziats, Jr.
John Thomas Ziats, Jr., 53 of North Tazewell died Oct. 25, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
Born April 21, 1952 in Elkton, MD, he was the son of John Thomas Ziats, Sr. of North Tazewell and the late Mary Jones Ziats.
Additional survivors: fiancée, Kathy Matney of North Tazewell; son, Thomas Matthew Ziats of Bland; and uncle, Frank Ziats of Bobtown, PA.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Woodrow Shelton officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Lloyd Bogle
Lloyd Bogle, 73, of the Tip Top area in North Tazewell, died Oct. 17, 2005 at his home.
Born Feb. 10, 1932 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Okie and Vangie Mitchell Bogle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Bogle and Wanda Bogle; one brother, George Bogle; and one grandson, Gary Tyler Bogle.
Survivors: wife, Molly Brown Bogle; son, Gary Bogle and wife, Linda, of North Carolina; daughter, Pam Bogle and companion, William Ratcliff, of North Carolina; grandsons, Daniel Bogle and William Chase Ratcliff of North Carolina; brothers, Fred Bogle of Meadview, Harry Bogle and wife, Retha, of Cedar Bluff, Doug Bogle and wife, Louise, of Tazewell; sisters, Ruby Duerson of North Tazewell, Martha Hurd of Woodstock, Della Mae Hollins and husband, Emory, of Elliston, Bonnie Mullins and husband, Danny, of Newton Falls, OH; and special cat, Butt Head.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Howard Hudson and Kenny Brown officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
