Albert D. “Dave” Plaster
Albert D. “Dave” Plaster, 70, of Raven, died Oct. 13, 2005 in a Tazewell hospital.
Born in Raven, he was the son of the late Charles Wesley and Martha Alice Horton Plaster.
He had made his home in the Raven area all of his life and was a retired supply clerk for the Simmons Rand Corporation. He was a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF & AM, the Tazewell Russell Shrine, and Oneska Tribe #61 of Improved Order of Redmen. He was a member of the New Hope Assembly in Claypool Hill.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Rasnake, Edith Whited, Frances Winfrey and Gertrude Woodrum; two brothers, Billy Plaster and Edward Plaster; four brothers-in-law, Kemper Rasnake, Clarence Whited, Jack Winfrey, and Howard Woodrum; and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Sydney Plaster.
Survivors: wife, Peggy E. Plaster; sons, Chad W. Plaster and wife, Sherri Lee, of Richlands, Charles “Chuck” Plaster and wife, Anita, of Raven; sisters, Ruth Mallory of Radcliff, KY, Marie Short and husband, Emory, of Richlands, Jean White and husband, Tolbert, of Abingdon, Judy Patton and husband, Jim, of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Russell Plaster of Galion, OH, Clinton Plaster and wife, Gail, of Mansfield, OH; grandchildren, Logan Plaster and Madison Plaster; step-granddaughter, Sarah Lee Proffitt and husband, Daniel, of Shortt’s Gap; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special family and friends.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Claudie Throgmartin and Rev. Jerry Welch officiating.
Entombment followed at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
Members of the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard of Abingdon conducted military graveside rites.
Members of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF & AM conducted Masonic services Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.

Mary Elizabeth Ratliff
Mary Elizabeth Smith Ratliff 76, of Vermilion, OH, died Oct. 14, 2005 in Community Health Partners in Lorain, OH, following a lengthy illness.
Born Mar. 12, 1929 in Raven, she was the daughter of the late Lucian and Gertrude Dickenson Smith.
She attended the Harbourtown Foursquare Community Church in Vermilion and enjoyed crocheting and playing Bingo. She also loved pets. She had been a resident of Vermilion for the past 40 years having moved from Michigan and Virginia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest E. Ratliff, and one daughter, Pricilla Ratliff.
Survivors: daughter, Karen Jones of Lorain; son, Ernie Ratliff of Vermilion; sisters, Trula Franks of Marion, Jean Stratton of Raven; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Paul Griffith officiating.
Interment will follow in the Smith Family cemetery at Raven.

Donald Adair Ray
Donald Adair Ray, 73, of Egg Farm Road, Cleveland, died Oct. 17, 2005 at his home.
Born June 11, 1932 in Russell County, he was a son of the late Carby Silas and Gussie Hess Ray.
He had lived in the Cleveland area since 1969 and was of the Baptist faith. He was a disabled and retired coal miner with Clinchfield Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA Local 1460.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Ray and Ralph Ray; one sister, Juanita Dye; one grandson, Ricky Ray, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Amy Collins.
Survivors: wife of 49 years, Dorothy Ray; daughters, Anita Ray of the home, Donna Collins of Elk Garden; son, Ricky Ray of Cleveland; sisters, Betty Rasnake and Minnie (Marvin) Taylor, both of Honaker, Ettie (Holland) Hess of Swords Creek; granddaughter, Amber Ray of Charlotte, NC; grandsons, Derek Popp of Elk Garden, Mark Collins of Roanoke; great-granddaughters, Azreal Collins and Destiny Collins, both of Cleveland, Kendeal Lynn Varney of Charlotte, NC, Celina Crabtree of Lebanon; great-grandson, James Varney of Charlotte; special great-granddaughter, Katie Ray of Cleveland; special person, Tim Bailey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Eugene Miller officiating.
Interment will follow in the Hess cemetery on Fletchers Ridge.

Timothy V. Shortridge
Timothy Vernal Shortridge, 23, of the Race Fork section of Hurley, died Oct. 12, 2005 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born in Buchanan Co., he was the son of Teresa Hurley Shortridge Ramey of North Tazewell and the late Carlos Shortridge.
He was a 2001 graduate of Hurley High School and was of the Christian faith. He was a Pinner Operator for S & B Coal Corp.
Additional survivors: stepfather, Gary Ramey of North Tazewell; brother, Robby “Petie” Shortridge and wife, Melissa, of Hurley; his fiancée, Kristy Cooper of Hurley; aunts, Phyllis Hammond of Medina, OH, Wilma White of Coeburn, Mary Duncan of Wise, Louise Rakes, Betty Belcher and Jennifer Belcher, all of Hurley; uncles, Roger Hurley and Doffie Hurley, both of Hurley, Bobby Hurley of Wytheville, Larry Ramey of Bluefield, VA, Jerry Ramey of Abingdon, Randy Ramey of Vansant, Michael Ramey of Oakwood; and several cousins.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Word Evangelistic Outreach Church near Wolford with Revs. Larry Ramey and Donnie Prater officiating.
Burial followed in the Hurley Family cemetery on Race Fork near Hurley.
A song service was held at the church Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and a regular service was held Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the church.
Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy was in charge of arrangements.

Elvinia Adkins Vencill
Gathering flowers for the Master’s Bouquet. The Lord picked another beautiful flower for his bouquet. Elvinia Adkins Vencill, 89, of Tazewell, died Oct. 12, 2005 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born July 22, 1916 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Enoch and Amanda Lambert Adkins.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was known well for the love of her Lord, her laughs, gardening, and especially for cooking for family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Robert Vencill; two sons, Joe Edd and Robert Enoch Vencill; four brothers, Walter, Jim, John, and George Adkins; three sisters, Mary Helmandollar, Euva Martin, and Elizabeth Hager; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Those left to cherish her memory are sister, Josephine A. Pruett of Tazewell; daughters, Eloise V. Norcia and Irene Gates, both of Maryland, Geraldine Peery and Pansy Wingo, both of Gratton, Shelby Thomas of Staunton, Nancy Eastridge of Tazewell; sons, Donnie Vencill, Steven Vencill, Timmy Vencill, Ricky Vencill, Kyle Vencill, and Kenny Vencill, all of Tazewell, Darrell Vencill of Lexington, Charlie Vencill of Roanoke; 34 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Elder Farley Beavers officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Gertrude “Trudy” Woodrum
Gertrude A. “Trudy” Woodrum, 74, of Galion, OH, died Oct. 12, 2005 at home.
Born May 4, 1931 in Raven, she was the daughter of the late Charles Plaster and Martha (Horton) Plaster.
She was a member of CrossWay Assembly of God in Galion. She was a homemaker and also worked at Swan Rubber in Bucyrus for many years.
She was preceded in death on June 6, 2001 by her husband, Howard L. Woodrum, whom she married June 8, 1966. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Virginia Whited, Ruby Clara Rasnake and Francis Carolyn Winfrey, and two brothers, Billy and Edward Plaster.
Survivors: sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Lowe of Enid, OK, Randy and Teresa Lowe of Perkins, OK; step daughters, Janice Kenney of Bolivar, Jackie Ward of Waldo; step son, Craig Woodrum of Marion; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Clint Plaster of Mansfield, Russell Plaster of Galion and David Plaster of Raven; and sisters, Ruth Mallory of Radcliff, KY, Marie Short of Richlands, Judy Patton of Cedar Bluff and Jean White of Abingdon.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at CrossWay Assembly of God in Galion with Rev. Dan Wood officiating.
Burial followed in Crawford County Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Crawford Co. Unit, c/o Doreen Morton, 990 Highland Ave., Galion, OH 44833.
Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion was in charge of arrangements.

Katherine G. Green
Katherine Goins Green, fondly known as “Cat, ” “Toots” and “Ms. Frisk, ” was born March 21, 1932 in King and Queen County, to the late Elizabeth Jones Mann and Thomas Robinson Sr. She departed this life on April 18, 2008 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester.
She was joined in holy matrimony to the late William Edward Goins Sr. for 34 years and to this union seven children were born. Later in life she married James Green of Washington, D.C.
She was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church at Samos where she sang in the choir.
She retired from Colonial Foundation in Williamsburg, where she worked as a housekeeper, and for many years she worked in the various oyster industries in Middlesex County. Katherine also was an active member of the Senior Center in Saluda. Her passions were laughing, singing and cooking her famous rice pudding for her family and friends. She also loved all flowers.
Survivors incliude her husband, James Green of Washington, D.C.; seven children, Lorraine Goins of Urbanna, Irene Goins of Water View, William (Agnes) Goins Jr. of Newport News, Elsie Goins of Washington, D.C., Dr. Ester (Albert) Green of Chesapeake, Ray Charles (Rose) Goins of Norfolk, and Jeannie Gaines of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Wilbert Jones of Westmoreland, Otho Mann of Gloucester, and James Mann of Richmond; one sister, Nettie Mann of King and Queen; one aunt, Catherine Jones; four brothers-in-law, Rev. James Lindsay of Barboursville, Horace Goins Jr. of Urbanna, Chris Green and Walter (Thelma) Green of Washington, D.C.; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Goins of Locust Hill and Ora Goins of Philadelphia, Pa.; thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held April 23 at Lebanon Worship Center, Saluda. Interment was in Metropolitan Baptist Church cemetery, Samos.

Birdie Day Williams
Birdie Day Williams, 104, of Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, died Sunday, April 20, 2008.
She was born February 16, 1904 in Washington, N.C., the daughter of William J. Day and Terry Valance.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Lafayette Williams, and was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was recognized and will be remembered by many for her numerous hours of volunteer work in the Richmond area.
Surviving are her son, Eugene Lafayette Williams Jr. and his wife Winnie of Saluda; one grandson, Eric Faudree and his wife Elizabeth of Urbanna; one granddaughter, Renee Stokes and husband Jerry of Ark; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held April 23 at Westhampton Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Woods, 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., Mechanicsville, VA 23111.

Nathaniel Ferguson
Graveside services for Nathaniel “Buster” Ferguson of Lanham, Md., who departed this life on September 5, 2008, will be Friday, September 12, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church Harmony Village, Locust Hill, with Bishop Carlton Johnson Sr. officiating.
Mr. Ferguson is survived by his devoted wife, Betsy Ferguson; two brothers; and six sisters.
Professional services entrusted to White-Tidewater Funeral Home, Jamaica.

C. Arthur Northrop
C. Arthur Northrop, 85, of Deltaville and West Palm Beach, Florida, died Sunday, September 7, 2008. He was a native of New York and retired Treasurer of IBM Corporation.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; three daughters, Joan, Carol and Peggy Jean; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 12, in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Saluda. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends today, September 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 98, Deltaville, VA 23043; or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.

Corinne Daniel
Corinne Daniel, 79, of Richmond, passed away quietly to her heavenly home, Monday, September 8, 2008 at Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, after a long and courageous illness.
She was predeceased by her parents, Richard Braxton and Nannie Thrift Daniel; brothers, James, Herbert, George, Lewis and Douglas Daniel; and sisters, Ethel Moon and Nancy Heinicke.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Fary; brother, Ben Daniel and sister-in-law Dorothy Daniel of Gloucester; and many nieces and nephews.
She retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company as an executive secretary and was a long-time member of Reveille United Methodist Church, Richmond.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, September 11, at Bethel Memorial cemetery, Jamaica, with Rev. Rita Stahl officiating.
Memorial gifts may be made to Salem-Olive Branch United Methodist Church, 11408 Salem Church Rd., Gloucester, VA 23061; or the ALS Foundation.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 17, at 1 p.m. at Covenant Woods, 7090 Covenant Woods Drive, Mechanicsville, with Pastor Steve Scott officiating.
