Melvin Tyree Patrick, age 71 of Williamsburg died Friday, July 6, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rackley Patrick; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara "Bobe" Jane and Jim W. Witzigman of Statesville, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Charles Henry and Theresa Lynn Patrick of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; four sisters, Elizabeth McLeod of Doswell, Eloise Rash of Richmond, Helen Doss of Mechanicsville, Dorothy Moyers of Chesterfield; one brother, Gordon Patrick of Virginia Beach. Preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice "Buddy" and Dwight Patrick. Mr. Patrick was past president and chairman of the board of the Protected Life Insurance Co. and founder of Patrick's Co., Inc. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and where services will be held 12:30 p.m. Monday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

PITTS
Lucille N. Pitts, 82, of Richmond, died July 5, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Colonel Ogene Pitts; three sons, Stanley, Mark and James Pitts; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beulah United Methodist Church.

PLOTT
Jack Wayne Plott, 66, of Chesterfield, Va., retired from A&E Supply Co., passed away July 5, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Caroline A. Plott; daughter, Katherine Plott of Chesterfield; son, LCpl. Sam Plott of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; one brother, Bobby Lee Plott of Warm Springs, Va.; aunt, Tunney Padgett of Lexington, Va.; and other loving family and friends. Mr. Plott was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sam and Josephine Plott and Betty Jo Hopper. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Monday 11 a.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

RICE
Virginia L. Rice of Beaverdam, widow of James A. "Buck" Rice, passed away Friday, July 6, 2001. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra R. and Ray Wood; two brothers, James N. Carter of Sandston and William Nelson Carter of Beaverdam; a sister, Margaret Registar, Ashland; three grandchildren, Pamela K., Ronald V. and Valerie N. Wood. Remains rest at the Beaverdam Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Zion Christian Church. Interment 11 a.m. Monday at Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Zion Christian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 55, Beaverdam, Va. 23015.

SANFORD
Mary Thelma Sanford, 74, of Montross, died on Thursday, July 5, 2001. Mrs. Sanford was the widow of Goodwin P. Sanford, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a retired secretary for Northern Neck Lumber. Survivors include her three sons, Goodwin Page Sanford Jr., Douglas Flynn "Buster" Sanford, both of Montross and Timothy Randolph Sanford of Nomini Grove; and four grandchildren, Christopher, Rachael, Elizabeth and Lily Sanford. A memorial service and dinner will be held on Sunday, July 8 at 4 p.m at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Nomini Grove, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery Fund, 21983 Kings Hwy. Montross, Va. 22520, Westmoreland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 37, Mt. Michael A. Simmons of Richmond departed this life Thursday, July 5, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

SPENCE
Paul J. Spence, 59, of Walkerton, died Friday, July 6, 2001. He is survived by five children, Paul A. Spence, Regina Pearce, Jeff Spence, Theresa Spence and Sheila Henley; his former wife, Bettie Spence; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Johnny Spence; three sisters, Lilly Bowyer, Barbara Ballard, Betty Powell. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Berea Baptist Church Cemetery in Rockville. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Hospice of Central Virginia.

WOODSON
Fitzhugh Lee Woodson Jr., 89, of West Point, Va., died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at his home. He was the owner and operator of Woodson Marine and Sports Sales for many years. Fitz was a charter member of New Kent Ruritan Club, a member of West Point Kiwanis Club and had served on the Board of Directors of Rappahannock Community College. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Woodson; three daughters, Ria and her husband, Neil Malloy of Ellicott City, Md., Tina and her husband, Mac McClellan of Clarksville, Va. and Lisa Lee Woodson of West Point; two grandchildren, Annie Magno and Fitz Malloy; a great-grandson, Eddie Magno; a niece, Myran Lee Walker of New Kent; and a nephew, Bill Woodson of Mechanicsville. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Point, Va. with burial in St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to West Point Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Inc., Box X, West Point, Va. or Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Building Fund, 207 W. Euclid Blvd., West Point, Va. 23181. Vincent Funeral Home handling arrangements.

BLUNT
Dorothy Cofer Blunt, age 94, widow of William A. Blunt, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2001, at the Masonic Home of Virginia. She is survived by six nieces and six nephews; also many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Woody Funeral Home, Laburnum Chapel, in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Etla V. Brown of Richmond departed this life Saturday, October 20, 2001. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her husband, Raymond Larry Brown; seven children, Diane Johnson, Larry Brown, Anthony Brown (Avis), Quintin Brown, Tijashia Brown, Tamore Brown and Detore Brown; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Clara Brown; four brothers, John D. Johnson Jr., James Johnson, Gary Johnson and Leon Johnson; three sisters, Jacqueline Johnson, Marilyn Johnson and Darcy Johnson; one uncle, David Pearson; two brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; devoted goddaughter, Lakiesha Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where the family will receive friends Tuesday (tonight) 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 24, 1 p.m. Dill Avenue Church of Christ, 3200 Dill Ave. Evangelist Joseph H. Helen "Ladybug" Ransone Carter, age 84, of Goochland, Va., died Monday, October 22, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Carter Sr. and her grandson, "J.W." Carter. She is survived by her sons, John R. Carter Jr. and his wife, Nancy and Franklin R. Carter and his wife, Carole; three granddaughters, Jewell Jones, Holly Swift and Mary Carter; three great-grandchildren, David and Matthew Swift and Mackenzie Jones; two sisters, Virginia Hollins and Hazel Parrish; one brother, Willie Ransone of Villa Grove, Ill. Remains rest at the Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23, 2001. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Forest Grove Christian Church. Interment church cemetery. Joseph J. Carter Sr. of 2617 The Terrace entered eternal rest October 21, 2001. Cherishing his memory are his wife, Leah H. CHANDLER
Lillian Hulcher Chandler, widow of P.J. Chandler, died Friday, October 19, 2001. She is survived by her son, Dr. P.J. Chandler Jr. of Richardson, Texas; and her daughter, Nancy Grey Stetson of Alpharetta, Ga.; two grandsons, four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Helen M. Hulcher of Richmond. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2001, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

CHENAULT
Rosa Edgar Pollard Chenault, age 98, widow of Charles D. Chenault, died Sunday, October 21, 2001 at the Hermitage. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Oakwood Cemetery.

CHRISTIAN
Departed this life October 22, 2001, Mr. Arthur A. Christian of 9800 Cosby Mill Rd., Quinton, Va. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later.

DOWNING
Frederick James Downing died Sunday, October 21, 2001, at his home in Lottsburg at age 62. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ellen; and three children, Mary Beth, Michael and Mark. He is also survived by his brother, William H. Downing of Nassawadox. Other survivors include three nieces, Jennifer Downing of Richmond, Pamela Downing of Gardena, Calif. and Lisa deWolff of Richmond; two nephews, Kirk Downing of Lottsburg and Lee Downing of Mineral. The son of the late Homer Lee and Mary James Downing, Frederick was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Downing of Ashland. Frederick was the owner and operator of Bleak House Farm which has been in his family for more than 200 years. Frederick pursued his dream of becoming a farmer from an early age and won various local, state and national FFA agricultural awards in high school, including Star State Farmer and Star American Farmer, which was conferred upon him by then President Richard Nixon. As an adult he was a prominent member of the community, belonging to the Callao Ruritan Club, Callao Moose Lodge, as well as being a member of the Southern States Grain Board, and a staunch supporter of Lewisetta Chapel. Frederick was an avid collector of antique tractors and was instrumental in starting the Antique Tractor Pull hosted each year by the Callao Ruritan Club. Remains rest at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the cemetery of Melrose United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Frederick J. Downing Memorial Fund, for the benefit of his favorite charities, c/o Bank Of Northumberland, Inc., P.O. Box 1040, Callao, Va. 22435.

FARMER
Phyllis G. Farmer of Chesterfield passed away October 22, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick L. Farmer; and is survived by a daughter, Audrey Goode and her husband, Harry; two granddaughters, Karen Chew and her husband, Hoover and Karol Brenner and her husband, Neal; and three great-grandchildren, Bridget and Trey Chew and Sydney Brenner. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 198, Chesterfield, Va. 23832.
