Mrs. Ernestine Melvin
Homegoing services for Mrs. Ernestine Melvin, 82, of Saluda, who departed this life Sunday, August 31, 2008, will be Saturday, September 6, at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Saluda, with pastor Rev. Paul Pleasants officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The viewing will be Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at White-Tidewater Funeral Home, Jamaica. The family will assemble at the residence at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Mrs. Melvin is survived by six daughters, Judy Sutherlin (Stanley) of Williamsburg, Faye Roane of Newport News, Joyce Cooke (William) of Gloucester, Diane Burnett (Douglas) of Hampton, and Gayle White and Sandra Melvin, both of Richmond; five sisters, Lillian Washington, Minnie Hodges (Delvin), Eva Cook (Sidney), Mary Waller and Dorothy Johnson (William); one brother, Joseph Habersham; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Professional services entrusted to White-Tidewater Funeral Home, Jamaica.

Barbara V. Shores
Barbara Ann Verlander Shores, 65, of Urbanna died Friday, September 5, 2008.
She was employed at NASA Langley before taking a secretarial position at Christchurch School. She then joined her husband and sons in the family businesses.
She was an active member of Urbanna United Methodist Church and Susanna Wesley Circle.
Mrs. Shores is survived by her husband of 47 years, Larry S. Shores; two sons, Larry S. Shores Jr. and his wife Jill, and Lance S. Shores and his wife Wendy; 4 grandchildren, Stone, Taylor Grace, Lauren Leigh and Meghan, all of Urbanna; and three sisters, Linda V. Glenn of Ashland, and Betty Jean Burch and Gail V. Akers of Water View.
Memorial services were held Sunday in Urbanna United Methodist Church with a reception following the service at the church. Interment was private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christmas Friends Inc., P.O. Box 549, Urbanna, VA 23175.
Arrangements are by Bris-tow-Faulkner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Saluda.

Clarice L.H. Burrell
Clarice Lenora Hackett Burrell of Deltaville went peacefully to be the Lord with her family and friends at her side on April 21, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. She was born in Middlesex County on April 6, 1934.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Raymond W. Burrell Sr. of Deltaville; daughter Leanna Burrell and son Robert Burrell, both of Hardyville; a sister-in-law, Naomi Banks of Peekskill, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Hackett and Lenora Taliaferro Hackett: and a son, Raymond W. Burrell Jr.
The services will be held at First Baptist Church Amburg in Deltaville on Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m., officiated by Rev. Carlton Johnson. The viewing will be held at the church on Friday, April 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Knights Funeral Home in Mathews is in charge of services.

Paul S. Green Jr.
Paul S. Green Jr., retired boat builder, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2012, at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He was 79 years old.
He was predeceased by his parents, Paul S. Green and Clementine Callis; his brother, Robert F. “Bobby” Green; and sister, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Callis.
Paul is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Milby Green; and his three children, Paul S. “Butch” Green III (Cindy) of Abingdon, Vicki White (Phillip Jr.) of Deltaville, and Kim Cox (Jeff) of Hardyville. He also leaves to cherish his memory his four grandchildren, Benjamin Paul Green (Nicole), Kenzie Green, Madison White and JT Cox; a brother, Maylon Green (Shirley) of Chesterfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Paul served in E Company, 61st Division of the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Camp Atterbury, Indianapolis, Indiana, before being transferred to Ft. Carson near Colorado Springs where he and his wife resided until the end of his tenure in the service.
After returning to Deltaville, he continued to work at the family’s boat business, P.S. Green & Sons on Broad Creek in Deltaville. In 1966 he founded Amburg Boat Craft, where he built yachts, sailing vessels and the popular Chesapeake Bay deadrise work boats. He was well known up and down the East Coast for his craftsmanship.
After retiring from his business, Paul pursued his hobby of building replicas of his boats, never to sell but to share with his children and grandchildren. His last work was “Noah’s Ark.”
He also was a member of Christ Episcopal Church at Christchurch where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda.

William D. LeCompte
It is with great sadness that the family of William “Bill” Donald LeCompte announces his passing.
Mr. LeCompte, 73, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes. He was born April 29, 1938, in Urbanna.
Mr. LeCompte grew up in Virginia and played football at Middlesex High School, graduating in 1958. He served a four-year apprenticeship at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, graduating in 1962. He was certified as a wood patternmaker. He moved to Waterloo in 1967 to work for John Deere Engine Works in Waterloo. After he retired from John Deere, Mr. LeCompte enjoyed reading, working with computers, and following NASCAR and football, among other hobbies.
Mr. LeCompte was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, NRA, and the Republican Party. He treasured his relationships with his family, who remember him as a kind and generous father and grandfather.
He is survived by one daughter, Carrie Ellen LeCompte of San Francisco, Cal.; one son, William David LeCompte, married to Stephanie and three grandchildren, William Nathaniel, Meta Camille and Caroline Stella LeCompte, all of Whitefish, Montana. Mr. LeCompte also is survived by his two sisters, Barbara Nelson of Remlik, and Joan (Robert) Daugherty of Quinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Frederick and Gladys Wyatt LeCompte of Middlesex County.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda.

Fay M. Bray
Fay M. Bray, 76, of Urbanna, widower of Edna Mae Bray, died Monday, April 16, 2012. He was a member of Urbanna Baptist Church and a retired VDOT employee.
Fay was an Army Veteran, an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter, Ginger B. Enz (Mike) of Gloucester; two sons, Dean M. Bray (Amy) of Gloucester and Robert P. Bray (Kelly) of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a sister. Betty Jean Ryman (Lawrence) of Remlik; grandchildren, Katie and Michael Enz and Haiden Bray; and a brother-in-law, Waverly Brooks of Williamsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda. Interment will be in Remlik Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the funeral home.
Memorial gifts may be made to Middlesex Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 71, or Urbanna Baptist Church, P.O. Box 416, both of Urbanna, VA 23175.

George H. Northam Jr.
George H. Northam Jr., 77, passed away at his home at Gloucester Point on Monday, April 16, 2012 with his family by his side.
Born on October 20, 1934, George grew up in Church View. He graduated from Middlesex High School and attended Richmond Professional Institute in Richmond. He served three years in the Army Air Defense System.
In 1961, George began his farming career and began serving the county that he loved so much. He served on the Middlesex Planning Commission for 22 years, and the Middle Peninsula Planning District for 10 years. He was a member and served as director of the Middlesex County Farm Bureau, was vice-chair of the Virginia Farm Bureau Marketing Association, served on the Middlesex, Mathews and Gloucester F.H.A. Board for four years, and was director of the Tidewater Soil and Conservation District for four years.
George served on the Middlesex Board of Supervisors from 1975-1979. He also chaired the committee that wrote the Middlesex County Capital Improvement Program, and he chaired the Dragon Run Steering Committee.
George was a Master Mason of Masonic Lodge #83 in Urbanna, a charter member of the Middlesex County Lions Club, and a member of Hermitage Baptist Church.
George was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Eva Northam, and his first wife, Elizabeth M. Northam. He is survived by his wife, Alice L. Northam; three sons, George Richard Northam of Richmond, Joseph M. Northam of Richmond and Mark D. Northam and wife Tammy of Prince George; two stepchildren, Dean Tillage of Gloucester Point and Jill Tillage Brown and husband Rob of Richmond; two grandsons, Trent Northam of Richmond and Connor Northam of Prince George; two step-granddaughters, Logan and Lily Brown of Richmond; his sister, Suzanne Doley and husband, Pete of Williamsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
George had a great sense of humor. He dearly loved his family and will be missed.
A visitation will be held at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Saluda on Tuesday, April 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Art Wolz and Rev. Edward Harrow on Wednesday, April 18, at Hermitage Baptist Church at 94 Wares Bridge Road, Church View, VA 23032. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the services.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 790, Urbanna, VA 23175; or the Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, 7358 Main Street, Gloucester, VA 23061.

Perry B. Yarrington
Perry B. Yarrington, 83, died April 11, 2012.
He was born August 24, 1928 in Warner to Robert and Annie Florence (Lumpkin) Yarrington. In 1945, at age 17, he graduated from Saluda High School and enlisted in the Navy. He retired in 1970 as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman, having served in multiple naval stations and onboard ship. He then worked for 15 years for the U.S. Department of Transportation retiring in 1985. For several years, he owned and raced thoroughbreds under the colors of Roseberry Farm, the name of the family home in Middlesex County.
He is survived by Mary Jane (Williams) Yarrington, his wife of 63 years; and his three children and their spouses, Robert Brantley and Mary Yarrington, Charlotte (Yarrington) and Michael Ball, and Michael and Linda Yarrington. He was the beloved grandfather of seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two younger brothers, Gressitt Yarrington and Richard (Dickie) Yarrington.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 18, at St. Rose of Lima Church, Milton, Fla. Internment will be at Arlington National cemetery in Virginia at 12:45 p.m. on July 31, 2012.

William M. Bristow
William M. Bristow, 73, of Saluda, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012. He was a U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and a former Merchant Seaman.
He is survived by his wife, Susie W. Bristow; four children, Randy Bristow (Becky), Wanda Pruett, Michael Bristow and Chele-Marie Allen; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday April 14, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Saluda. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of William to the Department of Veteran Affairs. Please make check payable to: the Dept. of Veteran Affairs. Robert M. French
Robert Mather French, born in Middlesex County on September 2, 1921 to Robert and Bessie French, passed away on April 5, 2012.
After graduating from Syringa High School, Mr. French enlisted in the Army and served overseas for four years during World War II. He was owner of Famous French Galleries in Saluda for many years.
He was predeceased in death by his wife of 52 years, Isobel Kelly French. He is survived by two daughters, Linda F. Hall and Roberta F. Thompson; six grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
He will be buried in Christ Church cemetery at a later time.

James C. Thompson Sr.
James (Jim) Christian Thompson Sr., 72, of Urbanna passed away Monday, April 2, 2012.
He was born on October 20, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Richmond. He is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Christie Thompson and Jane Bock Carner.
He is survived by his older brother, Matthew Christie (Chris) Thompson Jr.; children, Jane Loving, James C. (Jim) Thompson Jr., Matthew (Earle) Thompson and Dallas Scales; his grandchildren, Danielle Myers, Lauren Moore, Kelly Thompson, Jessie Thompson, Tim Thompson, Kerry Parker, Katie Kenney and Libby Scales; his great-grandchildren, Nicholas Parker, Karli Parker and Aiden Kenney; and a very dear friend, Suzanne Loehr.
As a youth, Jim was active in both the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. Shortly after high school he joined the United States Marine Corps. After serving his tour, he went on to attend West Virginia University and the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond where he graduated with honors in economics.
During his lifetime he founded and owned several successful businesses in both Richmond and Middlesex County. He also held an active Coast Guard 100 ton “master mariner” license, a private pilot license, real estate license, and a Class A builders license. Some of his passions in this life were cooking, traveling, being a charter boat captain aboard his boat the “Jim-an-i, ” and competitively participating in the national dog field trials with his much-loved Labrador and two-time national field-trail champion, Strike Sweet Tina.
Those who really knew Jim will cherish his memory forever in their hearts. He was loved by those people more than he could ever know and will be greatly missed.
Arrangements for a memorial service have been made with Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Saluda to be held on Thursday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ASPCA or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Ronnie C. Sprouse
Ronnie C. Sprouse, 54, of Saluda passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012. He worked for Old Dominion Grain for 34 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, William; sisters, Geraldine, Cornelia and Faye; and brothers, Willie, Gilbert, Jimmy and Milton.
Ronnie is survived by his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Sprouse; two sons, Ronnie, Jr. and his wife Donna, and Shawn and his wife Bernanda and grandson, Ryan; his mother, Nina Sprouse; sisters, Liz Bui and Frances Craven; brothers, Luther and Jeff Sprouse; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Friday at Vincent Funeral Home in West Point. Burial followed in New Hope Memorial Baptist Church cemetery.
