William A. Steinbach
William Allen Steinbach passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at his home in Urbanna.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Lydia S. Harrison and husband Bucky of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a daughter, Linda Sue Carroll and her husband Mike of Midlothian; son, William F. Steinbach of Northern Virginia; Robynn W. Hilliard and husband Erik of Richmond, and J. Neal Webb and wife Beth of Midlothian; and grandchildren, Zachary and Katherine Harrison, Patrick Carroll, Andrew and Sam Webb, Jack and Adam Hilliard.
Mr. Steinbach grew up in Ginter Park and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1946. He was an Army veteran and attended Richmond Professional Institute. For over 50 years he was a sales professional, entrepreneur and business owner. His career started at Dixie Container Corp. in the 1950s and he then dedicated the rest of his career to work in the adhesives business, ultimately owning his own company, Colonial Adhesives, before he retired.
He was actively involved in community service. He served on the Governor’s Board of Mental Health during the 1960s. He also inspired Christians for many years as a Sunday school teacher at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Salisbury Presbyterian Church and Urbanna United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian.
He loved the river community, boating and fishing.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 3, at Salisbury Presbyterian Church, Midlothian. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
A memorial service also will also be held at 4 p.m., Friday, October 3, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Saluda.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Philippi Christian Church, P.O. Box 555, Deltaville, VA 23043.

Ann L.C. Burch
Ann Lavonne Cox Burch, 55, of Jamaica departed this world on Sunday, September 28, 2008.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, L. Melvin Burch; four children, Denise Burch Trousdale and husband Shane, stationed in Japan, L. Russell Burch and wife Cynthia of King William, Spencer C. Burch of Jamaica, and Tyler A. Burch of Jamaica; a sister, Theresa Cox Hearn and husband Herman of Hiwassee; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Burch overcame many hurdles in her life. Her quiet strength and determination was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 3, in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Saluda. Interment will be in Forest Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, Warner. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, October 2, at the funeral home.

Catherine K. Lockley
Catherine Rebecca Kidd Lockley, fondly known as “Big Sister, ” went home to be with the Lord on September 18, 2008.

Delight M. Jackson
Deaconess Delight McGill Jackson of West Point departed this life on Saturday, July 5, 2008.
She was an active member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church and a graduate of St. Clare Walker High School in Middlesex. She spent her working years at the Naval Weapons Station, then the Williamsburg Soap and Candle Factory, from which she retired.
She volunteered at the West Point Good Neighbor Center until she became ill.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence “Dickie” Jackson; children, Eddra Taye Bortters and her husband James of Texas, Kari Jackson of West Point, and Chip Jackson and his wife Jennifer of West Point; grandchildren, Jason and Jami, McGill and Christy; four great-grandchildren; sister, Anne Harrod and husband Roy of Yorktown; brother, George McGill and wife Clara of Richmond; uncle and aunt, William and Zule Johnson; aunt, Tula Johnson; aunt, Pauline Johnson; sister-in-law and best friend, Shirley Pollard; and a host of nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service was held July 11 at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, West Point. Interment was in Sunny Slope, West Point.

Agnes F.G. Miles
Agnes Frances Goldman Miles of Saluda departed this life on July 16, 2008 at Mizpah Convalescent Center in Locust Hill.
She was born in Saluda in 1934 to James S. Goldman and Agnes T. Roane Goldman.
She joined Antioch Baptist Church in Saluda at an early age. She attended Middlesex County Public Schools, including former St. Clare Walker High School. As a child she loved drawing and art.
In 1955 she married Samuel Miles and they were blessed with five children. She devoted her life and love to her family.
For many years she enjoyed her job at the Famous French Art Galleries, working around the art that she loved. Later in life, she worked at various custodial and housekeeping jobs.
She was predeceased by her parents and two bothers, James A. Goldman and George R. Goldman.
Survivors include her husband and five children, Samuel Edward Miles of Silver Spring, Md., Alice A. Miles of Irvington, George W. Miles (Sharon) of Lackey, Milton D. Miles of Saluda, and Barbara A. Miles of Woodbridge; one sister, Dorothy Carter and her husband Wiley; a special niece and “little sister, ” Katherine G. Manning and her husband Roscoe; one sister-in-law, Martha M. Waller of Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandchildren, Licia M. Dandridge of Lively, and Eric T. Miles and Sidney N. Miles of Lackey; four great-grandchildren, Tremaine Dandridge, Tyron Dandridge, Bryanna Crabbe and Kiera Coleman, who truly lighted her life; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, Saluda, with interment in the church cemetery.

Lawrence L. Sutherlin
Lawrence Lowell Sutherlin, 73, of Locust Hill died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Sutherlin; and children, Cedric and Cheryl Sutherlin.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Scott Sutherlin; son, Lowell Sutherlin; sister, Mable Sutherlin-Kato; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held July 10 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Saluda.

Rev. G.C. Shepherd
Rev. Gaynor Curtis Shepherd, 70, of Wilsons, a former pastor at Urbanna United Methodist Church, died of renal failure on July 16 at his home with his family at his side.
Rev. Shepherd served in the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. For the most part, he spent the majority of his ministry with country charges or circuits.
His funeral was held Saturday at Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Blackstone. Burial was at Grace United Methodist Church in Wilsons.
He began his ministry in 1958 on the West Buckingham Charge and later led the West Franklin, Bedford Springs-Campbell, Otter and Moneta charges.
In 1967, with a growing family, he left the ministry for a better-paying secular job.
However, he returned to the ministry in 1970. He subsequently served the East Nottoway Charge as well as Stuart Church in Stuart, Bethany Church in Reedville, Urbanna Church in Urbanna, St. John’s Church in Norfolk, and Christ Church in Chincoteague, where he retired in 2001.
Mr. Shepherd, who graduated from Virginia State University, also had worked part time with six funeral homes, beginning with Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone in 1970.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Geneva Ayers Shepherd; a daughter, Deborah S. Barnes of Blackstone; three sons, Rev. Thomas B. Shepherd of Stuart, Curtis O. Shepherd of Blackstone and David M. Shepherd of Wilsons; five brothers, Julius Shepherd of Roanoke, Calvin Shepherd of Montvale, Rueben Shepherd of Duncan, S.C., Joe Shepherd of Phenix and Lloyd Shepherd of Victoria; six sisters, Hilda Johnson of Charlotte Court House, Christaline McCutcheon of Bedford, Eilene Conner of Montvale, Linda Crouch of Roanoke, Dori Kim of Fredericksburg and Shirley Blanton of Cullen; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert A. Gary III - local civic leader
Bob Gary, a longtime Deltaville resident, died July 17, 2008 following a brief illness.
Upon his graduation from University of Richmond in 1942, he was employed by Southern States Cooperative. Mr. Gary served in the Army in World War II.
He received his certified public accountant license in 1956 and founded the firm of Gary Stosch Walls and Co. and retired in 1978. He completed the Wharton School Program in Advanced Management for CPA Firm Partners in June 1976. He participated in several real estate projects, including the development of Queen Anne’s Cove Condominiums in Urbanna.
He and his wife Erma moved from Richmond to Deltaville 15 years ago. He soon became a leader in local community affairs. He was the first chairman of the newly-formed Industrial Development Authority (IDA) in Middlesex, and was treasurer at the time of his death.
“Bob enhanced the quality of life for the people of Middlesex County, ” said county supervisor Fred Crittenden. “When he moved here he brought his expertise and leadership to many aspects of county life. Bob loved Middlesex County and its people. He will be sorely missed.”
In addition, his community involvement and support included the Middlesex YMCA, Middlesex Public Library, Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, Deltaville Community Association, and the Rappahannock Power and Sail Squadron. He was current treasurer of the Piankatank Camp and Conference Center project. Mr. Gary was a strong and faithful member of the Lions club for many years.
He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church where he served on several committees and was the chairman of the building committee.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kathy Alexander, and her husband Harper; his son, Ted Gary; his wife’s children, Lee Coldiron, Ella Bryant, Beth Frohn and Hal Coldiron; and 12 grandchildren.

Naomi J. Clements
Naomi Jackson Clements, 96, of Deltaville, widow of Rev. Peter H. Clements Sr., died Tuesday, August 5, 2008. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church, Deltaville.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Rubye Burtoff and Mary Hellman; and one granddaughter, Rosemary Warren.
She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Rae Clements of Deltaville, and Rosetta C. DeIulio and her husband Joseph of Williamsburg; a son, Peter H. Clements, Jr. of Merritt Island, Florida; a sister, Stella J. Batley of Deltaville; brother, Chisely Jackson of Petersburg; 11 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, in Zoar Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, August 7, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Saluda. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Zoar Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1010, Deltaville, VA 23043.

Nellie T. Callis
Nellie Thomas Callis, 91, of Deltaville, widow of William J. Wood and John W. Callis, died Tuesday, October 21, 2008.

Kimberly-Robyn Lim
Kimberly-Robyn Grimes Lim, 28, passed away at home in Tappahannock on October 30, 2008 surrounded by her family.

Elliott E. Redmon Jr.
Elliott “Bud” Edgar Redmon Jr., 71, of Urbanna passed away after a long goodbye on Tuesday, October 21, 2008.

Elisabeth G. Newbill
Elisabeth G. “Liz” Newbill, 92, of Urbanna, widow of Leslie A. Newbill, died Friday, October 24, 2008.

Phillip Ray White Jr.
Phillip Ray White Jr. of Deltaville went to be with his Heavenly Father suddenly Saturday, September 13, 2014. He was 53 years old.
He is predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Freeman Madison; an uncle, James Freeman Madison; his father-in-law, Paul S. Green Jr., and his stepfather and stepmother Mr. and Mrs. John R. Croxton Jr.
Phillip leaves to cherish his memory, his wife and best friend of 30 years, Vicki Green White; and their daughter, Kimberley Madison White-Franks, and son-in-law, Taylor Harrison Franks of Williamsburg.
Phillip loved the Lord and served in all aspects of his church, Zoar Baptist, from Sunday school superintendent to drummer of the Sunday beach service and church services. He especially loved playing with his daughter, Madison, on the piano during church services. He was a member of the band “Spreading Joy.” Phillip also helped establish the youth group as a leader for 5 years and touched many young people’s lives.
Phillip worked most of his adult life in the automotive field in Middlesex County and the Northern Neck. His current position was Service Manager of Medlin Ford in West Point.
He also leaves his mother, Mary Jane Madison Wager of White Stone; sister, Candi Millen (Ricky) of Gloucester; and brothers, Johnny Croxton of Gloucester and Anthony Croxton of West Point. He also leaves his father, Phillip Ray White Sr. (Becky), and brothers, Bobby (Brenda) and Melvin White (Harriet), all of Richmond. In addition, he leaves his mother-in-law, Joyce Green Reisinger of Tappahannock; brother-in-law, Paul S. Green III (Cindy) of Abingdon; sister-in-law, Kimberley Green Cox (Jeff) of Hardyville; and many nieces and nephews. Also, extended family members, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Benson of Deltaville, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Boyd of North Carolina, Angela Berry of Gloucester, Penney Baldoni of Delaware, and Wayne Thomas of Gloucester. He also leaves many friends who he loved. In addition, he leaves behind his fur children, Ro Ro and Sassy, and his fur grandchildren, Dixie and Kit Kat.
In May, he walked his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, which was a joyous time for the whole family. Phillip had a large heart and loved many, and always found the good in all people. He will be greatly missed by many close friends and family.
Funeral services will be held at Zoar Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, and the interment will follow in the church cemetery. After the interment, the family requests that friends and family return to the Zoar Baptist Church fellowship hall for food and to visit with the family. Also, the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, in the Zoar Baptist Church sanctuary.
