Carol A. Sacra

Carol A. Sacra, 52, of Deltaville, formerly of Mechanicsville, went to be with her mother and stepfather, Nancy and Joe Coen, on February 6, 2014.

She is survived by her father, Stu Harigodt; siblings, Jackie, Trip, John, Shawn, Zack, Pete and Tom; and their significant others, nieces and nephews.

She was the first female in the state of Virginia to own and operate an excavation company, Black Creek Construction. She was an avid animal lover.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation, P.O. Box 15262 Richmond, VA 23227 (aarfr.org).

Carol P. Jenkins

Carol Parker Jenkins of Richmond died May 18, 2014 at Chippenham Hospital. She was preceded in death by her son, John E. Jenkins III; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Lee Parker of Stormont; and her brother, William Lee Parker Jr.

Carol is survived by her husband of 47 years, John “Jolly” Jenkins Jr.; sister, Anne Parker Donoff (Rich) of Urbanna; and brother, Joe D. Parker (Lazelle) of Roanoke.

Carol grew up in Stormont, attended Middlesex schools and graduated from Middlesex High in 1964. She retired from McGuire Woods LLP after 35 years of service.

She will be missed by Destiny, Boo and Storm and all of her family and friends. She was a member of Unity Christ Church, Bon Air, where a memorial service celebrated Carol’s life on May 23.

Carol Ray Milby

Carol Ray Milby, 84, of Gloucester passed away at the home of his daughter in Williamsburg on Friday, April 13, 2012.

He was born in King and Queen County to the late David L. and Nannie Foster Milby. He was the widower of Mary Davis Milby and was retired from Milby Logging Company where he worked with his brothers. He was a member of Petsworth Baptist Church.

Mr. Milby also was preceded in death by his son, Donald Milby; his grandson, Michael; and his brothers, Robert, Harold, Bennie and Joseph.

He is survived by his children, Linda Stanley and her husband Jerry, Brenda Hurley and her husband Louis, Theresa Huber and her husband Ben, Delores Barry and her son Adam, and Tammy Haurand and her husband John; his sisters, Sadie Darnell, Virginia Keller and Nannie Yarrington; his brother, James Milby; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 17. Burial was in Bellamy Memorial cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Sentara Williamsburg Hospice.

Charles E. Pitts

Charles Edward (Slim) Pitts, 59, passed away August 27 at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

He is survived by two daughters, Tracy and Tanya; a stepson, Reodell Sr.; and two grandchildren, Montrese and JaeLynn.

There will be no traditional service held as his children and other loved ones were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to express their love for him while he was still here to receive it.

Charles Edward Stevens Jr.

Charles Edward Stevens Jr., 71, of Mechanicsville, originally of Middlesex, drove his white van into his final sunset on Thursday, July 2, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Stevens Sr., and is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diana Epps Stevens; his children, Debbie, Amy and son-in-law Matt; grandchildren, Savannah, Holly, Jake, Shayne and Logan; mother, Margaret Stevens; sisters, Anne Landon and Patsy Sibley (Dicky); brother, Richard (CeCe); as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 9, at 2 p.m. at Mechanicsville Church of Christ. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mechanicsville Church of Christ, 8067 Atlee Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23111, or by simply watching a sunset in his memory.

Charles Hudgins

Charles Hudgins, resident of Lancashire Nursing home, went to heaven Sunday, April 22, 2012.

Charlie was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on September 29, 1926 and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up to marry Evelyn and had two wonderful children, Dianne and John. Sadly, a few years after the birth of their children, Evelyn lost her battle with cancer and went to live with our Lord. He eventually remarried to Ruth and worked hard to provide for his family.

Charlie had many careers during his life. Following his service with the United States Navy, he began working for the Maryland Transit Administration. There, he spent the next 41 years driving street cars, buses, and subway cars. After retiring, he spent several years of his life caring for his ailing wife until she passed away.

Charlie loved travelling, relaxing outside on warm sunny days, and attending church where he could visit with all of his friends. He also enjoyed long games of golf and was an excellent bowler.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Elsie Ingram Hudgins, four brothers, and one sister. Surviving family members include his children, Dianne and John; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by two of his dearest friends, Fred and Jerry Dant.

Though he has left his body, his spirit will always be with us through fond memories of “the good old times” that we will forever hold in our hearts.

Funeral services will be held will be held at a later date.

Charles R. Revere

Charles Ryland Revere, 76, passed away Monday, June 1, 2015 at his home in Hartfield. He was the only son of the late Howell Lee and Elizabeth Revere. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Chuck” R. Revere Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sally Gayle; sons, Craig with his wife Tammy and their sons Austin and Trevor, and Carlton with his wife Darla and their sons Joshua, Charlie and William; and numerous cousins.

His love of and skill at baseball allowed him to attend the University of Richmond where he played under his favorite coach, Mac Pitt. He proudly served in the US Army and rose to the rank of Captain. Friends and family say he was a lifelong learner who understood the need to get involved, and who volunteered and led many community organizations. He cherished the friendships he made while serving with the Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department, Middlesex Board of Supervisors, Eastern Virginia Bankshares Inc. Board, Riverside Health System Board, Middlesex Lions Club, and Northern Neck Free Health Clinic Board.

In the 50-plus years in the propane industry, he was involved with the Virginia Propane Gas Association (VAPGA), National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) and Propane Education and Research Council (PERC). He was considered a consensus builder in all of these associations earning him the NPGA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2014, and was inducted into the LP-Gas Hall of Fame in 2015.

As owner and president of Revere Gas Inc. and First Virginia Propane Inc., he worked with devoted and hardworking co-workers who served the propane needs of customers throughout eastern and central Virginia. The family business that he cared for provided him the opportunity to live and work in a community that he adored. He always felt very blessed to be able to work daily with his mother, father, wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and recently, grandsons.

His faith in God kept him active in many capacities at Lower United Methodist Church where he was a lifelong servant. He appreciated all of the gifts that God bestowed upon us, especially time outdoors. Whether it was farming the land, besting his buddies at golf, fellowship by the pool or hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons, he understood that today is a gift and we should embrace each and every moment.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 6, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, 15 CF Edwards Lane, Saluda VA 23149 from 5-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Lower United Methodist Church, 120 Lower Church Rd., Hartfield, on Sunday, June 7, at 2 p.m. with interment at the church cemetery immediately following the service.

There will be a Celebration of Life following at the Piankatank River Golf Club, 6198 Stormont Road, Hartfield, VA 23071. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Lower United Methodist Church (Parking Lot Fund), P.O. Box 98, Hartfield VA 23071; Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 205, Hartfield, VA 23071; or Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, P.O. Box 1694, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.

Chris D. Rutherford

Chris D. Rutherford, 57, of Deltaville, formerly of Newport News, passed away June 23, 2015 after a short courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Anne Cox.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his father, James D. Rutherford of Bossier City, La; two sisters, Ebba Russell (Frank) of Bossier City, La., and Penny LaFlamme of Newport News; two brothers, Tony Rutherford (Sandy) of Newport News, and Allen Scott Rutherford (Robin) of Toano; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 27, at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point.

Chris J. Plakas

Chris J. Plakas, 85, died Sunday, July 12, 2015 in Mathews. He owned and operated Walden’s Marina in Deltaville for nearly 30 years.

Born on the island of Ikaria, Greece, Chris served in the Greek Air Force before continuing his graduate education in Athens, Lisbon and at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. In the 1960s, while working on power generation for the new city of Brasilia, Brazil, the Rockefeller Foundation recruited him for his engineering expertise to work in the U.S. space program. Chris received several awards from NASA for designing instrumentation to detect evidence of extraterrestrial microorganisms.

Later he designed centrifuges for cancer research at the University of Illinois, before returning to Washington, D.C., as a consultant for NASA. After sailing his ketch, “Ikaria, ” from Deltaville to Greece in 1999, Chris retired from marina life to spend his summers sailing the Mediterranean.

He is survived by his loving son, Costa; daughter-in-law, Ainslie; granddaughter, Zoë Matilda; as well as four siblings and their families in Greece.

The family will hold a private celebration of his life.

Clarice L.H. Burrell

Clarice Lenora Hackett Burrell of Deltaville went peacefully to be the Lord with her family and friends at her side on April 21, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. She was born in Middlesex County on April 6, 1934.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Raymond W. Burrell Sr. of Deltaville; daughter Leanna Burrell and son Robert Burrell, both of Hardyville; a sister-in-law, Naomi Banks of Peekskill, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Hackett and Lenora Taliaferro Hackett: and a son, Raymond W. Burrell Jr.

The services will be held at First Baptist Church Amburg in Deltaville on Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m., officiated by Rev. Carlton Johnson. The viewing will be held at the church on Friday, April 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Knights Funeral Home in Mathews is in charge of services.

Corinne Daniel

Corinne Daniel, 79, of Richmond, passed away quietly to her heavenly home, Monday, September 8, 2008 at Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, after a long and courageous illness.

She was predeceased by her parents, Richard Braxton and Nannie Thrift Daniel; brothers, James, Herbert, George, Lewis and Douglas Daniel; and sisters, Ethel Moon and Nancy Heinicke.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Fary; brother, Ben Daniel and sister-in-law Dorothy Daniel of Gloucester; and many nieces and nephews.

She retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company as an executive secretary and was a long-time member of Reveille United Methodist Church, Richmond.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, September 11, at Bethel Memorial cemetery, Jamaica, with Rev. Rita Stahl officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to Salem-Olive Branch United Methodist Church, 11408 Salem Church Rd., Gloucester, VA 23061; or the ALS Foundation.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 17, at 1 p.m. at Covenant Woods, 7090 Covenant Woods Drive, Mechanicsville, with Pastor Steve Scott officiating.

Curtis Elias Lane Sr.

Curtis “Rock” Elias Lane Sr. 88, of Water View, a loving husband and father, and retiree of Norfolk Naval Supply Center in Norfolk passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 4, 2015 after a sudden illness. He was born and raised in Hertford, N.C., and resided in Water View for the past 29 years. He was a faithful member of Hermitage Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret Cahoon Lane.

He is survived by his son, Curtis Lane Jr. of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Brenda Smith of Chesapeake; a sister, Edna Russell of Saluda; three granddaughters, Stephanie Phillips, Stacy Crawley, Shanna Mohrman and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Hermitage Baptist Church in Church View. Interment will be at Hermitage Baptist Church cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, 15 C. F. Edwards Lane, Saluda.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hermitage Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 190, Church View, VA 23032.
