Eileen M. Stilwagen

Eileen Margaret Stilwagen (nee Faughnan) passed away after many courageous battles with cancer. She is now reunited with her husband, Rick, and her parents, Jerry and Evelyn Faughnan.

She leaves to carry on the legacy she and Rick began in 1969, her son, Rick, and his wife, Carmen, of Holbrook, NY, and their three children, Mathew, Samantha and Christian. Also, her daughter, Beth, and her husband, Mark, of Mechanicsville, and their four children, Kiera, Chase, Catherine and Cassie. Also, her sister, Patricia, and her husband, John.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Eugene Carlton Pierce Sr.

Eugene Carlton Pierce Sr. passed away June 30, 2015. He was a graduate of Middlesex High School and the Newport News Apprentice School. He retired from Phillip Morris and York Engineering.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Gordon Pierce; two sons, Eugene Carlton Pierce Jr. (Cheryl), and Kevin Wade Pierce; a daughter, Lori Lynn Enfield (Mike); two grandsons, Joshua Enfield and Cody Pierce; nine granddaughters, Jessica, Shannon and Caitlyn Pierce, Kristen Keller (Anthony), Chelsea Ringler (Josh), Brittany, Amanda, Alyssa and Casey Enfield; two great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; two brothers, Roland and Sherman Pierce (Janet); three sisters, Dorothy Barton (Tom), Sarah Crumpton (Jim), and Betty Sears (Willie); two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Staniuf (Joe), and Ruby Soles (Bernard); brother-in-law, Alvin Gordon (Cindy); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held July 3 at New Hope United Methodist Church in Saluda. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Evelyn Quillin Ryland

Evelyn Quillin Ryland, 95, Urbanna resident of 74 years and native of southwest Virginia, died peacefully at home Sunday, August 30, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, J. William (Bill) Ryland. She was the daughter of Hubert A. Quillin and Rose Slemp Johnson Quillin, and the sister of the late Howard Quillin, all of Kingsport, Tenn.

A former Sunday school teacher, postmaster, small business owner, author and area historian, Evelyn contributed greatly to her church and community. She and her husband Bill served in countless church and civic roles and always welcomed friends and visitors into their Urbanna Creek home on “the hill.”

Evelyn authored and co-authored “Historic Buildings in Middlesex County Virginia, 1650-1875”; “Urbanna—A Port Town in Virginia, 1680-1980”; and “History of Urbanna Baptist Church, 1888-2003, A Little Church with a Large Ministry.” She owned Miss Bettie’s Antiques. She loved arranging flowers for special days in the lives of friends.

She is survived by two sons, Walter H. Ryland and his wife Madelaine Aerni Ryland of Richmond, and John William Ryland III and his wife Claudia Robins Ryland of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Mark Ryland and his wife Corbin Brierre Ryland of Richmond, Caroline Ryland of Virginia Beach, Ashley Ryland Willis and her husband John Willis of Williamsburg, and John Page Ryland and his wife Betsy Ryland of Richmond; eight great-grandchildren, Cooper Ryland of Richmond, Alexis Covington of Caroline County, Ryland, Ben, and Reed Willis of Williamsburg, and Page, Cole, and Audrey Ryland of Richmond. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, September 3, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 4, at Urbanna Baptist Church with a reception following at the church. Interment will be at Hermitage Baptist Church cemetery in Church View at 2 p.m.

F. Winston Somers

Fletcher Winston “Winny” Somers (Pooh Bear), a lifetime Richmond native who loved his summers in Deltaville and winters in Vero Beach, Fla., passed away after 82 years of a very full life.

He is survived by his two daughters, Lynda Donahue (JD) and Judy Allen (Todd); grandchildren, Juli Cruciotti (Josh) and Davis Allen (Lindsey); and two great-granddaughters, Sadie and Anna.

Please pray for him privately as there will be no public service at his request.

Frederic P. Simon

Frederic Philip Simon, 81, of Williamsburg passed peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2015. He was born January 7, 1934 to the late Maurice and Charlotte Simon in Newark, New Jersey.

He graduated from Pennsylvania Military College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Fred served in the Army and became a USCG Licensed Captain. He was a member of the James City County Rotary Club, past Commodore of the Kingsmill Yacht Club, and past President of the Bond Club of Virginia, Richmond Bond Club, and Urbanna Creek Yacht Club.

Fred is survived by his wife, Ellen Simon; daughters, Peggy Simon of Petaluma, Cal., and Katie Simon of Richmond; grandchildren, Kerry Lester and Christopher Lester; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kerry Simon; and his sister, Ginny Steiner.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, August 22, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at the Chapel at Kingsmill, Wareham’s Pond Recreation Center, 175 Wareham’s Pond Rd., Williamsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Widener University (formerly Pennsylvania Military College), One University Place, Chester, PA 19013; or to Grove Christian Outreach, 8910 Pocahontas Trail #E, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

George H. Northam Jr.

George H. Northam Jr., 77, passed away at his home at Gloucester Point on Monday, April 16, 2012 with his family by his side.

Born on October 20, 1934, George grew up in Church View. He graduated from Middlesex High School and attended Richmond Professional Institute in Richmond. He served three years in the Army Air Defense System.

In 1961, George began his farming career and began serving the county that he loved so much. He served on the Middlesex Planning Commission for 22 years, and the Middle Peninsula Planning District for 10 years. He was a member and served as director of the Middlesex County Farm Bureau, was vice-chair of the Virginia Farm Bureau Marketing Association, served on the Middlesex, Mathews and Gloucester F.H.A. Board for four years, and was director of the Tidewater Soil and Conservation District for four years.

George served on the Middlesex Board of Supervisors from 1975-1979. He also chaired the committee that wrote the Middlesex County Capital Improvement Program, and he chaired the Dragon Run Steering Committee.

George was a Master Mason of Masonic Lodge #83 in Urbanna, a charter member of the Middlesex County Lions Club, and a member of Hermitage Baptist Church.

George was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Eva Northam, and his first wife, Elizabeth M. Northam. He is survived by his wife, Alice L. Northam; three sons, George Richard Northam of Richmond, Joseph M. Northam of Richmond and Mark D. Northam and wife Tammy of Prince George; two stepchildren, Dean Tillage of Gloucester Point and Jill Tillage Brown and husband Rob of Richmond; two grandsons, Trent Northam of Richmond and Connor Northam of Prince George; two step-granddaughters, Logan and Lily Brown of Richmond; his sister, Suzanne Doley and husband, Pete of Williamsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

George had a great sense of humor. He dearly loved his family and will be missed.

A visitation will be held at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Saluda on Tuesday, April 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Art Wolz and Rev. Edward Harrow on Wednesday, April 18, at Hermitage Baptist Church at 94 Wares Bridge Road, Church View, VA 23032. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the services.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 790, Urbanna, VA 23175; or the Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, 7358 Main Street, Gloucester, VA 23061.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Drs. Ronald Haggerty, Pierre Martin, David Muffleman and Ms. Katherine Beamer and all the wonderful staff of Hospice for the excellent care that George received.

Charles Edward Fore

Departed on Feb. 20, 2004 and resided in Richmond, VA.

Charles Edward Fore, Sergeant Major, U.S. Army (Ret.), age 73, of Richmond, died February 20, 2004. Survivors include his cousin, Charles Tapscott; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Virginia Veterans cemetery at Amelia.

Gerard E. Miller

Gerard E. Miller, born on January 15, 1923, entered into Eternal Life on July 6, 2015. Heaven has gained a Wonderful Angel.

He was a World War II veteran and served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Tank Corps in Normandy.

Gerard was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and worked for Grumman Aerospace for 35 years in Bethpage on Long Island, N.Y. He resided in North Bellmore, N.Y., until he and his wife Marion relocated to Hardyville in 2004.

He was a member of Clarksbury United Methodist Church in Hardyville.

He loved baseball, and although born and raised in N.Y., he was a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, yet also had a love for the N.Y. Yankees. He enjoyed gardening, drumming, listening to “Big Band” music, a good Italian meal, and animals (especially dogs), but the most precious to him was his family—The Light of his Life.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marion Jordan-Miller; sons, Alan, Gary and Glenn Miller; daughter Lynn and son-in-law Paul Bisogno; daughters-in-law, Fran and Carolyn Miller; four grandchildren, Michelle Grandville, Eric (wife Ronni) and Timothy Miller, and Laura (husband Brandon) Davis; five great-grandchildren, Julia Grandville, Kaitlyn and Alyssa Miller, and Arianna and Mason Davis; and his grand-dogs, DeMaio, Norton and Gypsy.

He will forever be in our hearts.

Elsie "Jinx" Louise Wright
(October 9, 1928 - April 17, 2011)

Elsie “Jinx” Louise Wright of Irvington died on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Elsie Louise Pollard and Wayne Lewis Hewett.

Surviving are her husband, William J. Wright, Col. USA (Ret.) a daughter, Leslie Ann Fisher and son-in-law William Charles Fisher of Salisbury Md., a son, Brian Hewett Wright, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandsons, Alexander Giles Fisher and William Henry Fisher III; a sister-in-law, Barbara Jean Wilson of Florida; a number of nephews and cousins.

Jinx earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland; her Master of Education degree from George Mason University; and the Endorsement on her Master's degree as an Elementary School Principal from the College of William and Mary.

For the first 14 years of her marriage, she volunteered as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She also taught elementary education for seven years in Fairfax County, Virginia.

When Jinx and Bill retired to Irvington they became members of Grace Episcopal Church, where she became active in the Altar Guild and Stewardship Committee. They also became Life Members of Historic Christ Church where she served as a docent and on the Flower Committee. In the early 1980's they became members of the Rappahannock River Yacht Club and the Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club.

Jinx was active at Mary Ball Museum and Library. She served on the Greens Committee and in the Genealogy Department of the library, and was a member of the DAR and Colonial Dames for many years. She worked with the Chapter One Reading Program in Lancaster County Public Schools, and later served on the Lancaster County School Board for seven years. She was most enthusiastic about her three year service on the board of the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic where she also served as a volunteer screener.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21 at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock. Interment in Grace Church cemetery.

Fay Potter Bryant
(January 14, 1922 - April 17, 2011)

Fay Potter Bryant, 89, of Lancaster died on Sunday, April 17, 2011. She was the widow of Kenner Monroe Bryant and preceded in death by a son, Robert Bryant and daughter, Alice Mundie. Mrs. Bryant was a member of Corrottoman Baptist Church, Ottoman and a retired Levi Strauss seamstress.

Surviving are four sisters, Mary Bryant, Morgan Sanford both of Lancaster, Naomi Urban of Kilmarnock and Virginia Stevens of Burgess; a brother, Franklin Potter of Lancaster; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Bryant of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Kenny Bryant, Amy Oliff, Allison Sisson, Brenda Bryant and Joshua Bryant; eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Rev. David Cromer officiating. Interment Corrottoman Baptist Church cemetery, Ottoman. Friends may call 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 20 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Upper Lancaster Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 176, Lively, VA 22507.

Starke Jett, V
(April 19, 1957 - April 16, 2011)

Starke Jett, V, 53, of Merry Point and Reedville died on Saturday, April 16, 2011. He was a graduate of The College of William and Mary, a member of Morattico Baptist Church and the Rappahannock Art League. Mr. Jett was a photographer, journalist and reporter for the Rappahannock Record.

Surviving are his wife, Lindy Jett; three children, Cyrus Jett, Stark Jett, VI and Nicholas Jett; two sisters, Sandra Ball and husband, Donald of North Carolina, Suzanne Reynolds of Roanoke; and aunt, Clarice Williams of Reedville.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Rev. Craig Smith officiating. Interment will be private.

Memorials may be made to Morattico Baptist Church, P. O. Box 228, Kilmarnock or Rappahannock Art League, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock 22482.

Malcolm Durwood Hale
(March 24, 1933 - April 18, 2011)

Malcolm Durwood Hale, 78, of Kilmarnock died on April 18, 2011. He was a member of Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired surveyor for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Dungan Hale; two daughters, Durinda Hale of Kilmarnock and Raye Kramer and husband, Dr. Paul Kramer of Johnson City, Tenn; three grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua and Matthew Kramer; brother-in-law, G. Bernard Dungan; two dear friends, Jack Thompson and Tyler Carlton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Hale and Dr. David Hale.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 22 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Rev. Debbie Marion and Rev. Donna Blythe officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Kilmarnock. Friends may call 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
