John William Riley
(August 16, 1925 - September 6, 2011)

John William Riley, 86, of Lancaster, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.

John was born on August 16, 1925 in Mason City Iowa to the late Joseph A. Riley and Vivian V. Thomas Riley. He was predeceased by sisters Dorothy L. Kindschi and Vivian J. Riley Cosbey, brother Robert J. Riley; sisters-in-law Peggy L. Riley and Mary A. Riley; brothers-in-law Donald W. Crosbey and Richard Kindschi.

John spent the better part of his childhood in Aberdeen, South Dakota until the family moved east to Arlington, Virginia during the 1930’s depression. World War II saw John in the US Navy serving as part of the Admiral’s staff reaching the rank of Radioman Second Class, Falmouth, England. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France LTC. Flotilla #1 on June 6, 1944. John met his future wife Marguerite in Falmouth and they married in England the following year before returning to the United States where he was assigned to Miami, Florida.

From childhood John had an interest in planes; flying in particular and pursued his career in Civil Aeronautics Administration commercially gaining a Private Pilot License and Aircraft Communicator Certificate with the CAA. This led to a position at Miami’s Air Traffic Control tower both before and after the Korean War. John was called back into active duty and served as Radioman First Class USS OGLETHORPE in the Mediterranean.

John had many interests: fishing, canoeing and in later years sailing. He sailed single handed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Florida Keys for several years. His love for aviation continued and he was a member of Academy Of Model Aeronautics for 27 years while building and flying radio controlled planes. John’s earlier Radio Operator skills lead him to his enthusiasm for “Ham” Amateur Radio Communications, with his identification number as N4DXP, and he was a member of The American Radio Relay League and Waterway Radio and Cruising Club.

He also loved playing the guitar and piano. Self taught at a very early age, John enjoyed playing for family, friends and at local Miami venues for a while until he decided to return to Northern Virginia. In Northern Virginia he established a new career as a Qualified Registered Craftsmen Member of The Piano Technician Guild Inc. He maintained a successful business in Piano Tuning and Refurbishment until retirement in 2008. He has lived in the Lancaster area for 25 years and was known as the “local piano tuner”.

John is survived by his son Michael C. Riley and wife Janice of Oldsmar, Florida; a daughter Patricia A. Keenan of Southampton, England; the mother of his children, Marguerite Riley of Dunedin, Florida; two brothers Donald C. Riley of Inverness, Florida and Ronald D. Riley and wife, Becky of Fredericksburg, Virginia, many nieces, nephews and his loving friends.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Pastor Ronald D. Riley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be made to the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, P. O.
