FULFORD
James C. Fulford, 64, of Callao, died October 21, 2001 after a long battle with cancer. He was an active member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, VFW Post #7167, Warsaw, American Legion and veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Fulford; five daughters and their husbands, Sherry Swanson of Lanexa, Penny Barton and Glenda Newsome, both of Lottsburg, Kathy Rock of Ophelia and Jamie Bowen of Village; brother, Ralph Fulford of Callao; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Emmerton. Interment in church cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

HALL
Mrs. Nellie Coates Hall, 82, of Richmond, died on Sunday, October 21, 2001. She was the widow of Rolly Hall and a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church. Survivors are two sons, Rolly Hall Jr. and wife, Linda and Timothy K. Hall; daughter, Betty Hall Alley; one granddaughter, Kristina B. Alley; five brothers, Bill Coates, Hoover Coates, Marvin Coates, Eugene Coates and Lawrence Coates; two sisters, Irene Coates and Mary Ellen Coates. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Welch-Marks Funeral Home, Warsaw, with interment in Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 385, Warsaw, Va. 22572.

HARRIS
Departed this life October 18, 2001 in Lakeland, Fla., Wayne A. Harris Sr. His memory lives on in the heart and mind of his son, Wayne A. Harris Jr.; grandson, Trevon Wayne Johnson; parents, Louise B. and Thomas L. Harris, Sr.; three brothers, Thomas L. Jr., Howard M. Harris and Perry Hall; two sisters, Audrey Booker and Gloria Harris; two aunts, two uncles, two sisters-in-law, a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday 12 Noon from Community Baptist Church, 1900 Everett Street, Pastor Michael McClary officiating. HICKS
John R. "Donnie" Hicks, 56, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 22, 2001. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dale Y. Hicks; daughter and son-in-law, Kellee H. and Joseph J. Lapallo; daughter, Jill R. Hicks; brothers, T. Gregory and Bryan K. Hicks; granddaughters, Alexandra Ruth and Raychel Lynn Lapallo. Mr. Hicks was a U.S. Army Veteran and was an Assistant General Manager with Costco. His family will receive friends Tuesday, 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be private. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Henrico Christmas Mother Program, P.O. Box 27, Sandston, Va. 23150.

HICKS
Departed this life Friday, October 19, 2001, Mrs. Rosa J. Hicks, 82, of Amelia. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Hicks; three sons, Thomas (Ella), Herbert (Joyce), and Louis Hicks; four daughters, Gertrude King (William), Arlene Johnson (Isaac), Viola and Marilyn Hicks (Ishmael); 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jennie Jones, Katie Harris, Charlotte Hobson; two brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law; a devoted niece, Cynthia Jones; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 24, at 1 p.m. from Liberty Baptist Church, Amelia. Rev. Neal Jackson, Pastor, officiating. Interment church cemetery. Remains rest at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home, Rt. 360, Amelia. Family and friends assemble at the home at 12 noon.

HORNER
Mary Elizabeth (Royster) Horner, 73, of 2034 Churchville Ave., Staunton, went to be with the Lord Sunday, October 21, 2001 in her home. She was born April 19, 1928 in Halifax County, a daughter of James Ellis and Janie Elizabeth (Poole) Royster. She was employed by King's Daughters' Hospital in 1977, and she has been the librarian at Augusta Medical Center since 1993. Virginia Commonwealth University recently awarded her a certificate of recognition for her lifelong dedication to education. She was a long-time volunteer and supporter of the Augusta Regional Free Clinic. A private pilot for many years, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Experimental Aircraft Association. She was an active member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. On May 27, 1951, she married Russell H. Horner, who preceded her in death on February 10, 1998. Surviving are four daughters, Janie Horner Tarrant, Cynthia Horner Wishmyer, and Suzanne Lynn Horner, all of Richmond, and Elinor Russell Nordseth of Herndon; a brother, C. B. Royster of Lynchburg; a sister, Polly Hite of Clarkesville; and ten grandchildren. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in Churchville by the Revs. Gary Hodges and Ralph Green. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her daughters and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be sons-in-law. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Augusta Regional Free Clinic, P.O. Box 153, Fishersville, Va. 22939. Bear Funeral Home of Churchville is serving the family.

JOYCE
Walter Leroy Joyce, age 75, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 22, 2001. He was a member of Goochland Volunteer Fire Department Co. #3, a retired employee of Union Envelope, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and member of the Good Shepherd Community Church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hill Joyce; and a host of devoted brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., Glen Allen, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Goochland Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co. #3.

KING
Gladys Byrd Nicholas King, of 15365 W. Patrick Henry Rd., Montpelier, Va., departed this life on Sunday October 21, 2001 at Henrico Doctors South Hospice of Central Virginia after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Henry L King; a niece/daughter, Eloise Miller; four brothers, Wilbur, F. Warren, Henry and John Nicholas; one sister, Bessie Nicholas; stepmother Fannie Nicholas; seven brothers-in-law; 14 sisters-in-law; a godson, David Nicholas Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, among them devoted Jean White, Bertha Nicholas, Harriett Banks, Emma DeBorous, Gwendolyn Strane, Artner Giles, Lillie Lewis, Frances Kenney and Leroy "Eddie" Mines. A special thank you goes to Hospice of Central Virginia, church family, neighbors and friends. Her remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Ruth Farmer Marr of King William County passed away peacefully October 22, 2001. Survived by her husband, James C. Marr Sr.; two sons, James C. Marr Jr. and wife, Koni, and William E. Marr; five grandchildren, Doug, Tracey, Jamie, Michael Marr and Devin Dougherty; two sisters, Betty F. Webb and Brenda F. Mozingo. The remains rest at the B. W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 til 8 p.m. and where services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Mattaponi Rescue Squad.

MAYO
Vernelle "Skeeter" Mayo, 80, of Richmond passed away October 20, 2001. She was the widow of James A. Mayo. She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Janet and Roger Brookshire; two granddaughters, Kendall Brookshire and Caroline Watkins; three sisters-in-law, Bessie Williams, Joyce Jones and Vivian Crawford; two nieces, Marsha Partch and Linda Morrell; and devoted friends, Sandi and Dick Phillips, Willie and Anita Crafton, Cecil Brooks and Marion Minor. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

McCOOK
Frederick W. McCook Sr., 79, of Henrico, died October 22, 2001. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris; three children, Connie McCook, Cathy Harper and Fred Jr.; and three grandchildren. His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. Mr. McCook was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Mizpah Chapter 32, Glen Allen Lodge 131, Shriners, and Scottish Rite. MERTEN
David William Merten, 53, a native of Follansbee, W.Va., entered into eternal rest Sunday, October 21, 2001. His survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and William C. Jones, with whom he resided in Montpelier, Va. Mr. Merten was a patient of Rockwood Dialysis in Chesterfield County and Gambro Dialysis in Glen Allen. His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and where a funeral service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be in Wellsburg, W.Va.

MONROE
Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Herbert Monroe Jr. departed this life suddenly on October 18, 2001 after a brief illness at the age of 81. He was born to the late Herbert Monroe Sr. and Esther Monroe on January 20, 1920. He was preceded in death by a son, Lorenzo Monroe. He leaves to mourn a loving wife of 50 years, Mary Alice Monroe; one daughter, Esther Marilyn Monroe; seven sons, Herbert, Billy Ray, Anthony, Andrew, Timothy, Turner and Kevin Monroe; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; one aunt, Viola Cheatham; five daughters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; five sisters-in law; a devoted caretaker, Rose Dismuke; and a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 North 25th St., where the family will receive friends Tuesday (tonight) from 7 to 8 p.m. and where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Burial Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 3 p.m. The family may be contacted at (804)421-2625.

NUNNALLY
James R. "Shug" Nunnally, 74, of Chesterfield, died October 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Browning Nunnally; daughter and son-in-law, Vernell N. and Kenneth E. McFarlane Jr.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David Hunter and Frances Nunnally, Charles Edward and Barbara Nunnally; five grandsons, Kenny, Jeff, Brian, Matthew and Chris McFarlane; six great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Jacob, Megan, Brittany, Abby and James McFarlane. He was a WWII Army veteran and retired from Virginia Folding Box Company after 33 years of service. He was also a former musician around Richmond. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maury Cemetery.

POWERS
Mrs. Virginia Shields Powers, 74, of Kenbridge, Va., widow of Tommy Lee Powers, died October 21, 2001. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, James C. Powers of Wilson, N.C. and Wayne and Diane Powers of Kenbridge; two grandchildren, Jodi Lynn Powers and Ashley Fay Powers; two sisters, Mary Lee Sadler of Victoria and Lucy Perini of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Powers was preceded in death by her daughter, Juanita Lee Powers. Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Crestview Memorial Park, South Hill, Va. Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge, Va. is in charge of services.

RAINEY
William Thomas Rainey, age 82, died Saturday, October 20, 2001. Mr. Rainey was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, a member of the Richmond Elks Lodge No. 45, and the Tuckahoe Moose Lodge No. 1163. Survivors include one brother, Joseph Rainey and his wife, Edith of Philadelphia, Pa.; their three daughters and one son; Mr. Rainey's 14 great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew; one sister-in-law, Barbara Oates of Ruther Glen, Va.; her six children; Mr. Rainey's 10 great-nieces and great-nephews and three great-great-nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at Washington Memorial Park in Richmond, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

RUFFIN
Departed this life October 21, 2001, Mrs. Mary Jones Ruffin of 2001 Maple Street. She is survived by one devoted niece, Adelaide V. Dent; two brothers, James A. and Plummer M. Jones; nieces, nephews, among them devoted, John D. Pegram and cousins; one sister-in-law, Martha J. Jones; and other relatives and friends, among them two devoted, Roberta Harrison and Edna Carter. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Earl M. Brown officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
