Austin L. Roberts, III
(February 5, 1947 - August 22, 2011)

Austin L. Roberts III, of White Stone died on Monday, August 22, 2011 at home, in the arms of his wife, Barbara, and holding his son's hand. Roberts was a loving husband and father, and a respected leader in the community. His intelligence, integrity and concern for others were evident to all who knew him.

Roberts was born in Washington, D.C. to Austin and Barbara Roberts and grew up in Bethesda, MD. He graduated from Walt Whitman High School and from the College of William and Mary, where he received a B.S. in Accounting in 1969 and a MBA in 1971.

Roberts had a long and distinguished career in banking, starting after college with First and Merchants Bank, later Sovran; and in 1976, at the age or 29, he became the youngest bank president in the Commonwealth of Virginia (First Peninsula Bank & Trust in Hampton, VA). He later helped start Commerce Bank in Newport News. In 1990, Roberts moved to the Northern Neck to become President and CEO of Bank of Lancaster. During Roberts’ 21-year tenure with Bank of Lancaster, he provided extraordinary leadership and vision; and the Bank grew from one banking office with assets of approximately $89 million to nine banking offices with $335 million in assets.

One of the cornerstones in Roberts’ life was his belief that one should pay their “civic rent, ” to always try and make the world a better place in which to live. He led by example and in 1980 Roberts was recognized as The Outstanding Young Man in the Commonwealth. Over the years he worked with and later chaired the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula; was a Rotarian, serving with both the Newport News Club (past president) and later with the Kilmarnock-Irvington-White Stone Club; and served on numerous Boards, to include Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts, CASA, VIMS, the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, and was a founding member of Virginia Quality Life.

His intellect, business acumen and foresight were greatly appreciated when he was appointed to his beloved College of William and Mary’s Board of Visitors. He also sat on the William and Mary Board of Directors of the School of Education. In 1994 he received the Alumni Medallion, the highest honor bestowed by the College.

In keeping with Roberts dedication to education, during his career he served on the Board of the Virginia Council on Economic Education, Rappahannock Community College and on the Board of Trustees of Chesapeake Academy. He was a strong supporter of financial literacy for young people and helped create the infrastructure for school banks in both Lancaster and Northumberland Counties. These school banks made history in the Northern Neck and received both State and National recognition.

His honesty, integrity and interest in providing opportunities for people to be the best they could be made him a much sought-after advisor and mentor, by friends and colleagues within the banking industry and the community. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Lower Northern Neck YMCA located in Kilmarnock, which served as the catalyst for other YMCA offices in Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland Counties.

Roberts contributions extended beyond his community to the State and National level, where he held leadership positions in the Virginia Bankers Association, serving on numerous Committees; the Virginia Association of Community Banks; and the American Bankers Association (ABA). Roberts served on the ABA’s Board of Directors, and on its Education, Communications and Legislative Committees. He also served as Chairman of the ABA’s Community Bankers Council for the entire nation, an honor never before bestowed upon a banker from the Northern Neck, and one he accepted with humbleness and led with dignity. Roberts was further honored by the ABA when he was asked to testify before Congress on behalf of the banking industry, with particular emphasis on the regulatory burdens and accounting treatments affecting banks’ abilities to lend to small businesses.

Roberts had a positive attitude, he lived with hope, and had strength and grace that were a source of inspiration to all who knew him.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 37 years, Barbara Powell Roberts; his wonderful son, Austin L. “Rob” Roberts, IV; his parents, Austin and Barbara Roberts; his sisters, Clare Roberts, Gretchen Thompson and Barbara McCarthy, and her husband Mac; five nieces and five great nieces and nephews; his father-in-law, Marcus Powell; in-laws, Sandy and Pete Holden, Bob and Phyllis Powell, Kathy and Greg Rhine; and of course by his entire Bank of Lancaster/Bay Trust Company “family.”

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., Monday, August 29, 2011 at Lancaster Middle School Auditorium, Kilmarnock, with a reception to follow at Indian Creek Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the College of William & Mary or the Northern Neck YMCA. Gifts to the College may be sent, earmarked in Memory of Austin L. Roberts, III, to The College of William and Mary, P.O. Box 1693, Williamsburg, VA. 23187 or to the YMCA, P. O. Box 1809, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
