Elise Wilmer Hilbert
(June 2, 1923 - January 6, 2012)

Elise Wilmer Hilbert, 88, died on January 6, 2012 at her home in White Stone, Virginia. She was born June 2, 1923, daughter of the late Helen Parker and Harry Bond Wilmer. Her first husband, George S. Watson and her second, George Hilbert both preceded her in death, as did her brother Henry Wilmer.

Elise owned and operated the Sign O’ the Whale in Annapolis, Maryland until she married George Hilbert and moved to the Northern Neck. She loved boating and was an avid golfer. Wednesdays would usually find her volunteering at Seconds Unlimited working to raise money for Rappahannock General Hospital. She served on the Board of the Richmond Symphony and on the Board for her Alma Mater, Oldfields School in Maryland.

Surviving are her daughter, Charlotte B. Watson of Front Royal; and four of George Hilbert’s children survive her, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 13, 2012 at Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock, Virginia. Interment will be at Old Saint Paul’s Parrish in Chestertown, Maryland at a later date.

Mary Russell Lent
(April 15, 1918 - January 5, 2012)

Mary Russell Lent, 93, of Weems formerly of Mila died on January 5, 2012 in Scranton, Penn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert Fortescue Lent. Mrs. Lent was a member of Mila United Methodist Church and a member and director of Mila Community cemetery. She was a life member and former officer in the New Jersey Congress of Parents and Teachers Association, a life member of both The Woman’s Club in Barrington, N. J. and The Woman’s Club of White Stone, a member of The Lettice Lee Chapter, Colonial Dames and The Cobbs Hall Chapter D.A.R.

Surviving two daughters, Charlotte Ann Lent of Newfoundland, Pa. and Nancy Lent Moore and husband, Gary of Robbinsville, N.J.; two sons, Robert G. Lent and wife, Jean of Lyndhurst and William Russell Lent of Lithonia, Ga.; two grandsons, R. H. Lent of Lyndhurst and Raymond Lent, Cpl., USMC and wife Amanda of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 8 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Pastor Donna Blythe officiating. Interment will be in Mila Community cemetery, Mila.

Russell Edward Parham
(February 25, 1930 - January 1, 2012)

Russell Edward Parham, 81, of Weems formerly of Charles City died on January 1, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Shirley Parham and two sons, Daniel Edward Parham and Russell Steven Parham.

Surviving are his children, Barbara Ann Williams and husband, Bob of Logan, Illinois, Christa Diane Parks and husband, Tim of Newport News, Teresa Jayne King and husband, Louis of Quinton, Julian Stacey Parham and wife, Lynn of Raleigh, N. C.; a devoted friend, Lucky Parham of Weems; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother and three sisters.

Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery in Charles City.

Memorials may be made to Kilmarnock-Lancaster Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 333, Kilmarnock 22482.

John Francis Arrix, Jr.
(February 23, 1929 - January 10, 2012)

John Francis Arrix, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Kilmarnock on January 10, 2012. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, Mr. Arrix was the son of the late John Francis and Mary Cushney Arrix.

Mr. Arrix, who attended Teaneck High School, served in the National Guard in the 1950s, and graduated from Newark College of Engineering. He was the founder and president of Amsco Sales Corporation, manufacturers of wholesale chemical plant equipment, pipefitting and electrical equipment, until his retirement.

Mr. Arrix, an outdoorsman who loved hunting quail and deer, had been an accomplished athlete, playing baseball and softball, as well as ski jumping with such greats as Art Devlin, an Olympian, at Bear Mountain in New York. He was an avid golfer, and was president of Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club in Kilmarnock from 1992 to 1994. An American history buff, he had a keen interest in the Civil and Revolutionary Wars.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn (Lyn) Reid Arrix; a brother, Robert J. Arrix, and wife, Kate; a daughter, Nancy Arrix FitzPatrick, and husband, Paul A.; a step-daughter, Deborah L. Bowie, and husband, Robert H.; step- sons, Mark and William S. Randall; and three grandchildren, Caroline FitzPatrick Eckstein, and husband, Rick, Chase E. and Christopher A. FitzPatrick.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 17 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Kilmarnock, VA.

John Sloan
(January 21, 1917 - December 23, 2011)

John Sloan, 94, of Lancaster passed away peacefully on December 23, 2011 at Farnham Manor. He was born on January 21, 1917, in Clifton, N.J. son of the late Daniel and Molly Slobodzian. He attended Clifton High School. On June 3, 1939, he married Rose Nazimek. In the wake of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy and deployed to the submarine base in Coco Solo, Panama, where he served as a diesel engine machinist. He also served in Oran, Africa, before discharge in 1945 and becoming a charter member and officer of the Athenia Veteran’s Post.

Professionally, he worked in the aromatic chemical field, serving for many years as Chief Compounder with Ungerer & Company and as Purchasing Agent for Van Dyk and Novarome Corporations.

John served as a distinguished volunteer Boy Scout leader for more than 50 years. In 1953, he organized the first Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop at School #13, in Clifton, from which he had graduated as a youth. He served as Scoutmaster and Chairman of Troop 54. Later, he coordinated all Adult Training for Aheka Council, served as its District Commissioner, and in 1962 received the prestigious “Silver Beaver” award. In 1965, he served as the Robert Treat Council’s (Newark, N.J.) resident Camp Ranger at “Scout Acres.”

In 1967, he joined the Clifton Toastmaster Club and for the next 15 years served in all officer capacities. He won awards as the Best Area Governor and Best District Governor of the Year.

In 1982, John retired and moved to Corrottoman By The Bay. There he served as a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of several committees. He directed development of the CBTB nine-hole golf course and organized tournaments. He served as temporary chair of Lancaster County’s Litter Control Committee in 1987.

In 1984, he enrolled as member-at-large with the Robert E. Lee Boy Scout Council and in 1987 served as the Chairman of Troop 222 in Lively. He was awarded the Northern Neck District Award of Merit in 1991.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and served as secretary, treasurer, and president of its Men’s group.

John is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rose, who continues to reside at Farnham Manor; son Jay Sloan and wife, Susan of Denver, N.C.; grandson Stephen Sloan and wife,

Mary Ellen, and great granddaughter, Nora Jane of Holyoke, MA; grandson Stewart Sloan and wife, Ginny and great grand daughters, Elizabeth Maslin and Eleanor Rose of Charlotte, N.C.; brother Harry Slobodzian of Whiting, N.J.; nieces Joyce Moore, Delores Benson, Ceil Fileccia, and nephews Dan, Scott, and Sam Slobodzian, Robert Mosley, Stanley Zignorski, and their families of N.J.; cousins Douglas Cherkas, Lori Hanna, Karen Deatherage and their families of N.J. and Md.

John Sloan is known for his loyalty to God, family, country, church, and community; honesty; service to others; courage; and devotion to his loving wife and family.

The family express deep appreciation for the loving care and support received from Dr. Rocky Tingle, the Farnham Manor Adult Residence, friends and neighbors at Corrotoman By the Bay, members of Bethel and Emmanuel Methodist Churches, and friends near and far.

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held 4:30 p.m. on January 28 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lively. Inurnment will be at Arlington National cemetery at a later date.

Anna Marie Evans Morgan
(October 28, 1922 - January 9, 2012)

Anna Marie Evans Morgan, 89, of White Stone a devoted wife and mother died on January 9, 2012. She was the widow of Raymond Franklin Morgan, Sr. and a lifelong member of White Stone United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Raymond F. Morgan, Jr. and wife, Susan of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Beverly M. Strickland and husband, Lewis of Newport News, Mary C. Clarke and husband, Joel of Richmond; six grandchildren, Jon and Chris Morgan, Jason Strickland, Jamie Strickland and wife, Sabrina, Rachel Stanley and husband, Eric and Jenna Clarke; two great grandchildren, Shaylin Strickland and Ryan Stanley; a brother, Larry Davenport and wife, Jean of White Stone; a brother-in-law, Jack Morgan and wife, Lillian of Chrisfield, Md.; and many nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at White Stone United Methodist Church, White Stone. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family extends a special thanks to the staff of Riverside Hospice and The Gardens of Warwick Forest for their devoted care.

Hildegarde Kolle Maring
(July 17, 1921 - December 20, 2011)

Hildegarde Kolle Maring, 90, formerly of New Kensington, Pa. passed away on December 20, 2011 at the residence of her son in Heathsville, Va. She had been in declining health for several months. She was preceded in death in 2005 by her husband, Howard E. Maring and her sister, Ingeborg K. Velardo in 1998.

Mrs. Maring was born in Germany and came here with her parents and sister in 1924. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Later she attended Western Reserve and taught briefly for Cleveland Public School under a special contract in 1960. In the mid-60’s she lost her right hand to sarcoma cancer; after a few years, she finished her BS degree in education at Kent State University in Ohio. She was a substitute teacher for several school districts in western Pennsylvania, but primarily for New Kensington-Arnold School Distric in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Along with her husband of 62 years, relatives and friends, she took numerous trips: the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Alaska via the Inland Passage, an anniversary trip to Hawaii, a riverboat cruise up the Mississippi River and to Switzerland. The also enjoyed summers at their cottage in Ohio.

Surviving are a son, Jeffrey H. (Lise) Maring of Heathsville, Va.; a granddaughter, Danielle N. Maring of Richmond, Va.; a niece, Barbara (Jim) Raden, of Copley, OH; three nephews, Richard (Lilas) Velardo and Dennis (Charlene) Velardo of Medina, OH, Kenneth (Linda) Velardo of Mentor-on-the-Lake, OH; several grand nieces and nephews; three great grandnieces, as well as many dear friends and neighbors.

Visitation will be 1 – 3 p.m. Thursday, December 29 with the funeral service at 3 p.m. at Waite and Son Funeral Home in Medina OH. Interment Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmstead, OH.

Carol Kellum Davis
(January 11, 1947 - December 17, 2011)

Carol K. Davis, 64, of Weems died on Saturday, December 17, 2011. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a lifetime member of Claybrook Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, James Francis Davis; two daughters, Sharon L. Delano and husband, Tommy of Weems, Amy D. Banks and husband, Brian of Newport News; two grandchildren, Collin L. Keyser and Lilly D. Delano; a sister, Glyns R. Kellum of Weems.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 21 at Claybrook Baptist Church, Weems. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 20 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.

William Haynie Clark, Sr.
(April 7, 1930 - December 16, 2011)

William Haynie Clark, Sr., 81, of Lively died on Friday, December 16, 2011. He was a graduate of RPI, a member and former trustee of Bethel United Methodist Church and a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Clark was the former owner and operator of Lively Supermarket, a charter member and president of Upper Lancaster Fire Department and a member of the Upper Lancaster Ruritan Club. He was a member of Lancaster Union Lodge # 88 A.F. & A.M. Mr. Clark was a lifelong avid New York Yankees baseball fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Clark- Frith and husband, Ray of Weems; a son, William “Bill” H. Clark, Jr. and wife Kim of Lancaster; six grandchildren, Beth Forrester and husband, Jim, Katie Dixon, Kevin Frith and wife, Emily, Jonathan Frith, Nikki Clark and Becky Clark Webb and husband, Dennis; four great grandchildren, Paige Elizabeth Forrester, James Elliott Forrester, Haley Marie Pease and Elijah Wayne Dixon.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 19 at Bethel United Methodist Church, Lively with interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call 4 – 6 p.m. Sunday, December 18 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.
