Eugene Grayson Mattingly
(August 11, 1941 - November 10, 2011)

Eugene Grayson Mattingly, 70, of Irvington died on November 10, 2011 after a long battle with cancer.

Mattingly, who went by his middle name of Grayson, was born August 11, 1941 in Washington, D.C., the son of William E. Mattingly and Elsie Carter Mattingly. He grew up in the District where he attended the Sidwell Friends School and graduated from the Hawthorne School. He was a graduate of Elon University, Elon, North Carolina and did post-graduate work in education at The American University in Washington, D.C.

A born entrepreneur, Mattingly co-founded a seminal video company, Videoforms, Inc., in 1968 and was considered a pioneer in the field of non-broadcast video. He often said that the best thing that ever happened to him was his failure to get into medical school and, instead, become known as “Doctor Video” to many media-minded folks. In 1971 he co-founded Mattingly Productions and remained at its helm until his death. Over the course of his long career, he wrote the original guidelines for producing video depositions in the federal courts, designed video networks for numerous Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, served as a video archivist for the U.S. Supreme Court, developed and taught video workshops nationally and internationally, and won many awards and accolades for his productions.

Mattingly was a former adjunct professor in media at the University of Virginia, and the author of two books and numerous articles on video production and post-production. He was particularly proud that Mattingly Productions acted as an “incubator” for young employees and interns who went on to successful careers in broadcast news, cable television series production, and the production of documentary and training programming.

Grayson Mattingly was also a pioneer video artist. His video art was in both national and international exhibitions – including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where he was a Fellow – and on the PBS-produced program, Video: The New Wave.

Mattingly moved his company to the Northern Neck just prior to 9-11. Once settled in, he enjoyed producing oral histories for local organizations such as the Steamboat Era Museum, the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, and the Bank of Lancaster as well as the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD, and the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT.

His parents and his sister, Doris Elizabeth Mattingly of Kilmarnock, VA, predeceased Mattingly. Survivors include his wife and business partner of 33 years, Suzanne Fisher-Mattingly; his daughter, Mary Beth Mattingly Saulnier and her husband Albert Saulnier of San Diego, CA; two granddaughters, Laura Saulnier Varney and Carolyn Saulnier, both of San Diego; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Martha Sheridan of Kilmarnock, VA; a godson, Samuel Ellison, of Alexandria, VA; a goddaughter, Ilana Ellison of Houston, TX; a close-knit band of cousins; and his many friends and colleagues.

Mattingly’s last manuscript, co-authored with his wife, is currently being edited for e-publishing. The book, entitled Video Preserves: A Layman’s Guide to Video-Based Oral History Recording & Archiving Methods & Techniques, will be available in late 2012.

Funeral services were private. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held in the near future. Memorials may be made to the Animal Welfare League, P.O. Box 975, White Stone, VA 22578.
