SCHROLL
Charles Howard Schroll, 49, of Richmond died unexpectedly on October 21, 2001. He was born in Highland Park, Michigan and had lived in Richmond since 1979, working for the Henrico County Department of Recreation and Parks, serving as Parks Planning Supervisor for most of that time. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University and was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, for which he served as a board member and for a year as President, of the VA Chapter. He was on the Board of the Ginter Park Residents' Association, acted as a District Representative and served on the Street Tree Committee. He taught continuing education classes in landscape design at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. He was a Board member and served a year as President of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), an organization that helps abused children. He was also a life-long supporter of Barksdale Theatre. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Louise Schroll; his mother-in-law, Betty Weisbrod; his sisters, Janice Skinner, Cathy Zuker, and Eileen MacDonald; his brothers, Ted Schroll and Paul Schroll; seven nieces and three nephews; and by countless friends all of whom will miss him greatly. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 26, at the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center in Henrico Country. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Charles' name to the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center or to Barksdale Theatre.

SCOTT
Edith Cooper Scott passed away in the care of Hospice of Central Virginia on Sunday, October 21, 2001. She was born in Fayetteville, N.C. on November 29, 1928. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Charles L. Scott Sr.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles L. Jr. and Debbie Scott of Lilburn, Ga., Henry Dale and Renee Scott of Richmond, and Gary C. and Jeanne Scott of Shipman, Va.; three grandchildren, Jessica Lynn, Michael C., and John Neal Scott. Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at North Run Baptist Church. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Scott was a graduate of Meredith College and taught school in Wayne and Wake County in North Carolina and in the Henrico County School System. She then went to work for the Henrico County Library System. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Run Baptist Church Building Fund, 2100 Lydell Dr., Richmond, Va. 23228 or Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226.

SIMPSON
Departed this life October 20, 2001, Ronald A. Simpson of 2451 Drake Street. He is survived by two daughters, Sheryl M. Rivers and Carolyn M. Simpson; two grandchildren, Shanique and DeMarcus Perry; one sister, Carolyn S. Brown; one brother, Ernest Simpson Jr.; one aunt, Otis S. Bullock; one uncle John W. Simpson, several nieces, nephews and cousins; one sister-in-law, Ruth H. Simpson; one brother-in-law, James A. Brown; and other relatives and friends, among them, Jimmy Scott. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. James Ryan officiating. Interment Quantico Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.

UTLEY
Mrs. Nellie Farrar Utley passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, October 21, 2001. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Bennett and her husband, Arthur and Shirley Barham and her husband, Earnest; six grandchildren, Arthur Bennett Jr., Linda Almeida, John Bennett, Earnest F. Barham Jr., Brenda Smiy and Mark Stephen Barham. She also has nine great-grandchildren. There will be a private family memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

WELLS
Emanuel L. Wells, 78, of Columbia, Va. departed this life Monday, October 22, 2001. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. Funeral notice later.

WHITE
George W. White, 83, of Powhatan, died on October 22, 2001. He is survived by his son, George L. White of Powhatan; two daughters, Catherine W. Cave of Amelia and Bettie W. Roach of Charles City; one granddaughter, Tina C. Owens; three great-grandchildren, Dustin, Dale and Angel Starr. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan, and where services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. Interment Red Lane Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.

WILLIAMS
Departed this life October 21, 2001, Mrs. Alice L. Williams of 1405 W. Leigh Street. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue. Funeral notice later.

WILLIAMS
Ruth H. Williams, age 57, of Richmond, died October 20, 2001 at her residence. The wife of the late Thurman Williams, survived by her son, John L. Henley Sr.; two grandchildren, John L. Jr. and William Henley; one sister, Dorothy Driscoll; two brothers, Lawrence and Thomas Hunt. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at 7 p.m. at Church of God of Prophecy, 3400 Turner Road, Chesterfield. Visitation will follow after services. ALLEN
Betty Powers Allen, 54, of Richmond, died Saturday, October 21, 2000. She is survived by her husband, James A. "Butch" Allen; two daughters, Sandra Allen Payne and Christine Allen Agnello and husband, Bryan; her mother, Ann C. Powers; two sisters, Mary Ann Baker and husband, Glen, and Kathy Bucker and husband, Bunny; three brothers, Daniel Powers Jr. and wife, Ann, Billy Powers and wife, Pat, and Jimmy Powers and wife, Helen; two grandchildren, Ben and Amber Payne; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Frances Powers and Janice Alexander. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by two brothers, David W. Powers Sr. and Johnny F. Powers. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, where Mrs. Allen was an active member and deacon serving in the Chancel Choir and the Saints Alive Choir. BAIRD
Myrtle E. Baird, 79, went to be with the Lord on October 20, 2000. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Thomas W. Baird Jr.; three children, Thomas W. Baird III and his wife, Ann, Ronnie L. Baird and his wife, Linda, and Tina M. Camden; three grandchildren, Michael T. Baird and his wife, Beth, Christine B. Hall and her husband, Ronnie, and Justin L. Camden; three great-grandchildren, Scott Baird, Heather Hall and Jacob Hall; a sister, Agnes Wolff. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Antonnette L. Carter of 102 Engleside Drive entered eternal rest October 18, 2000. Cherishing her memory are two sons, Raekwon L. Carter and Jarvel T. Drayton; mother, Lucille C. CHASE
Margaret George Chase, 92, of Kilmarnock, passed away October 20, 2000. Her husband, Henri B. Chase Jr., preceded her in death. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rear Admiral Bert Chase and Genny Chase; four grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Commander Henri Gordon Chase, Crighton and Ian Chase and Commander Michael and Mrs. Debbie Chase; three great-grandsons, Micah, Jacob and Joshua Chase. Margaret was born in Irvington, Va. and lived most of her life in Kilmarnock, with the exception of 20 years she spent as a head resident at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends at the Currie Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, at the Kilmarnock Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Morattico Baptist Church.

CROWDER
Mr. Charles Watkins Crowder, age 92, of South Hill, died Saturday, October 21, 2000. Mr. Crowder graduated from South Hill High School in 1927 and from Norfolk College in Business Administration in 1930. He became an employee of Robertson Chemical Corp. in South Hill that same year. He formed Crowder & Holloway Insurance Agency in 1936, and following his partner’s death, purchased the entire interest in 1941. He became a member of South Hill Masonic Lodge No. 297, AF&AM in 1940. He was a member of the South Hill United Methodist Church, having served as a Trustee, a member of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee. He joined the South Hill Lions Club in 1935 and was the last living charter member. He was a past president and the last living charter member of the South Hill Chamber of Commerce. He was a former Board member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia and a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of America. He was a retired member of the Board of Directors of the former Citizens Bank, now first Virginia Bank. Mr. Crowder is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marguerite Spencer Crowder; his son, Spencer M. Crowder of South Hill; his granddaughter, Shannon K. Crowder; and his grandson, C. Hunter Crowder, both of Richmond. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Raymond Elliott, died October 20, 2000. Funeral services Tuesday, October 24, 2 p.m. from the Union Hill Baptist Church, Buckingham, Va.

GILBERT
HT1 Arthur James Gilbert Jr. (U.S. Navy Retired), 53, died at home on Saturday, October 21, 2000. Born in Richmond, he had been a Hampton resident for 13 years. HT1 Gilbert had retired from the U.S. Navy in 1993 after 28 years of service, including tours in Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. During his service to his country, he served on many ships, including the U.S.S. Chilton, U.S.S. Prolwess, U.S.S. Biddle, U.S.S. America, U.S.S. Vulcan and the U.S.S. Manitowoc. He was a member of the VFW Post 3219, American Legion Post 1991, DAV Chapter 6, Amvets Post 30, and the Fleet Reserve Assoc. HT1 Gilbert is survived by his wife, Gladys Mae Brann Gilbert; mother, Bertha Joyce Gilbert McCoy of Richmond; brothers, Gerald Wayne Gilbert Sr. of Ruther Glen, Darryl Lynn Gilbert Sr. of Sandston, and Kelvin Eugene Gilbert of Richmond; children, Samantha Cook, Tabatha Gilbert and Arthur James Gilbert III, all of Richmond; three grandchildren; father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Brann of Farnham; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton, and then Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. The family will then receive friends on Wednesday from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Warsaw, with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
