Carmie F. Davis

Carmie Fuller Davis, 92, of Salem, died Oct. 16, 2003 in a Salem hospital.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late James Madison and Louisa Grace Woosley Fuller.

She had lived in the Honaker area until moving to Salem in 1985. She graduated from East Tennessee State University, had been a teacher at Honaker High School and a teacher and librarian at Honaker Elementary School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Honaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry "Bus" Davis; one daughter, Mary Katherine Holst; two sisters, Narcie Fuller and Cora Presley; and three brothers, Clyde Fuller, Luther E. Fuller and Fred Fuller. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Bobby L. Clark of Roanoke; grandchildren, Melissa Clark of Baltimore, MD, Robert Clark of Blacksburg; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Chris Musick officiating.

Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.

Vivian C. Farmer

Vivian Compton Farmer, 85, of Whitewood, died Oct. 21, 2003 at a Lebanon hospital.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Claudia Earls Hankins

Claudia Earls Hankins, 92, of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 13, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Hannah Harrison Earls, both Tazewell County natives.

She was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was of the Church of Christ faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reber Hankins; one son, Joseph Samuel Hankins; two sisters, Ruth Smith and Gussie Butcher; and two brothers, Harrison Earls and Benny Earls. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughter, Betty Hankins Richardson and husband, Harold, of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, Joseph Hankins, Rick Hankins, and Michael Hankins; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Evangelist Bob Smith and Rick Hankins officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Geneva G. Hess

Geneva G. Dye Hess, 70, of Raven, went to be with her heavenly Father Oct. 16, 2003 at her home.

Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Pat and Annie Bostic Dye.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the Road Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Dora Dye; her first husband, Hubert Breedlove; three brothers, Burt Dye, Ken Dye and Bill Dye; and three sisters, Beulah Hubbard, Maria Batton and Vida Harris.

Survivors: sons, Manuel Breedlove and wife, Ann, of Troy, OH, Mike Hess and his fiancée, Kelly Meyers, of Manassas; daughters, Nancy Boyd and husband, Jerry, of Little Mountain, SC, Teresa Goodie and husband, David, of Bristol, VA, Lisa Hess of Raven; brothers, Frank Dye of Honaker, Perry Dye and wife, Arbutus, and Ruel Dye and wife, Della, all of Swords Creek; sisters, Louise Dye and Ebbie Hess, both of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Betty, Randall, Keith, Jessica, Jamey, Sarah, Jeremy, Jacob, Justin and Benjamin; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie, Gabriel, Haley, Jordan, Savannah, and Alex; and special friends, Ruth Anders and Eric Jeter.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Bro. Joe Gross, Bro. Chester Pericllia and Bro. Mike Altizer officiating.

Interment followed in the Dye cemetery at Swords Creek.

William H. Horn

William Harrison Horn, 78, of Meadowview, died Oct. 15, 2003 in Johnston Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late William Vince and Susie Vandyke Horn.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Flossie Catherine Keen Horn; three brothers, Howard Horn, Hoover Horn and Coy Horn; and two sisters, Mrs. Wesley (Polly) Horn and Mrs. Ballard (Nellie) Keen.

Survivors: wife, Ada Slate Horn; daughters, Mrs. Wendell (Shelvy) Deskins of Rt. 1, Raven, Mrs. Remire (Judy) Deskins of Abingdon, Mrs. Richard (Bonnie) Justus of Roanoke; step-daughters, Mrs. Paul (Diane) Lawson of Raven, Mrs. Loren (Dena) Mitchell and Mrs. Tim (Dreema) Pruett, both of Richlands; one step-son, Richard Slate of Richlands; sisters, Mrs. Jay (Charity) Blankenship of Pounding Mill, Mrs. Luther (Tennessee) Cantrell of Richlands, Mrs. Burl (Canzis) Rude and Mrs. Alex (Donie) Ferrell, both of Alburn, IN, Mrs. James (Onie) Brown of Ashely, IN, and Mrs. John (Lida) Godbey of Rt. 1, Raven; brothers, Emery Claude Horn of Glade Springs, Jay C. Horn of Rt. 1, Raven; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.

Burial followed in the Esaw Rife cemetery at Keen Mountain.

Catherine T. Mullin

Catherine Trigg Quillin Mullin, 90, of Gainesville, FL, died Oct. 14, 2003 at E.T. York Hospice Care Center.

Born in Christiansburg, she moved to Gainesville in 1958. She was a retired teacher.

She was a graduate of Radford College in Virginia and taught school at Melrose High School, Westwood Junior High School, P.K. Younge Laboratory School, Gainesville High School and Eastside High School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Gainesville. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Gainesville Garden Club, Rose Society, University Women, Little Theater, American Home Economics Association, Florida Home Economics Association and Ikenobo Ikebana Society. She was an accomplished flower arranger and flower show judge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Spencer Mullin.

Survivors: sons, Grat McDonald Mullin of Switzerland, FL, Robert Spencer Mullin Jr. of Boones Mill; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at Baughman Center – Lake Alice on The University of Florida Campus with Chaplain Preston Ponce.

Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Gainesville is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Mae Parish

Edna Mae Looney Parish, 96, of Grundy, died Oct. 18, 2003 at Heritage Hall in Grundy.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County. She was the daughter of the late J. Paris and Jennie Belle Wyatt Looney.

She was a homemaker and was the oldest member of the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church having taught the young children’s Sunday School Class for many years. She attended the Grundy Presbyterian School. She was a life member of the Presbyterian Women and was named to the Homemaker’s Hall of Fame in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.G. (Grady) Parish; one son, William G. Parish, Jr.; two brothers, Keith Looney and Paris Looney; and two sisters, Vida Davis and Gladys Thompson.

Survivors: son, Roger Parish and wife, Lynn, of Mauldin, SC; daughter, Kathryn Leggett and husband, Army, of McMinnville, TN; daughter-in-law, Polly Parish of Abingdon; brother, Robert Looney and wife, Ginna, of Elizabethton, TN; sister, Elizabeth Williams of Bluefield, VA; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church with grandsons, Rev. John Parish Leggett and William G. Parish III, officiating and being assisted by Rev. R. Brian Brock.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church Improvement Fund for the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1339, Grundy, VA 24614.

Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy was in charge of arrangements.

Emma K. Perry

Emma Katherine Perry, 83, of Oakwood, died Oct. 14, 2003 in a Lebanon hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Sarah Matney Keen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bandy W. Perry; and one brother, Henry Keen.

Survivors: son, William H. (Bill) Perry and wife, Brenda, of Richlands; brother, Jim Keen of Oakwood; sisters, Ida Viers of Rogersville, TN, Elizabeth Perry of Richlands; grandson, Richard Scott Perry of Claypool Hill; and great-granddaughter, Lisa J. Perry.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Oct. 16 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Harold Junior Rose

Harold Junior Rose, 69, of the Fork Ridge section of Raven, died Oct. 13, 2003 at a Pearisburg hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Goldie Sisk Rose of Raven and the late Jay Rose.

He was a retired coal miner and truck driver.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Darlene Rose, and two brothers, James Rose and Amos Rose.

Additional survivors: wife of 51 years, Doris A. Webb Rose; sons, David Rose of Pearisburg, Ricky Rose and Larry Rose and wife, Bertina, all of Raven; daughter, Patricia Osborne and husband, Marvin, of Wardell; sisters, Opal Tackett and Marie Johnson, both of Raven, Alma McNulty of Wardell; brothers, Darrell Rose of Raven, Virgil Rose of Claypool Hill, Aulbert Rose of Richlands; ten grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one great grandchild; and three step great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Oct. 17 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Edward Hess officiating.

Burial followed in the Davis cemetery at Short Gap.

Joshua A. Russell

Joshua Aaron Russell, 21, of Richlands, died Oct. 18, 2003 in a Bristol, TN, hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of Arron and Lelia Jane Brown Russell of Thompson Valley.

He had made his home in Richlands all of his life and was a Richlands High School Class of 2000 graduate. He was of the Holiness Faith.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Anna Frances Russell.

Additional survivors: wife, Shonda Nuckles Russell; daughter, Haley Jade Russell of the home; sister, Cynthia Ann Harman of Raven; brother, Zackary Bryant Russell of Thompson Valley; paternal grandparents, Alfred Cornett Russell and wife, Ester, of Bandy; and maternal grandparents, John and Anna Ruth Brown, Jr. of Richlands.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Barry Absher and Rev. Dannie Short officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.
