Carrie Little Boothe

Carrie Little Boothe, 86, of North Tazewell, died Feb. 2, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

Born in Floyd County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Lura Alderman Little.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George William Booth; one son, John Howard "Johnny" Boothe, Sr.; one daughter, Katherine "Kitty" Pruitt; two brothers, Raymond Little and E.B. Little; and one sister, Berita Levacie.

Survivors: daughters, Dorothy Rasnick and husband, William B., Linda "Trixie" Horn, and Glenna Myers and husband, Dennis, all of Tazewell; sons, Don Boothe and wife, Jeanne, of Indianapolis, IN, William "Bill" Boothe and wife, Billy Faye, of Tazewell; daughter-in-law, Margaret Boothe of North Tazewell; son-in-law, Lawrence Pruitt of North Tazewell; sisters, Betty Livingood of Blue Earth, MN, Shirley Vernon of Kernersville, NC, Vera Powers and Juanita LeGuard, both of Chilhowie; brothers, Eugene Little and Jimmy Little, both of Chilhowie; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Eugene Little and Pastor Vonley Pruitt officiating.

Graveside services were held Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Artie M. Boyd

Artie Marie Whited Boyd, 102, of Abingdon, formerly of Richlands, died Feb. 7, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lee and Sallie Bostic Whited, both Russell County natives.

She had made her home in Abingdon the past 17 years and was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Luther Boyd; three sisters, Minnie Corns, Pearl Vance, and Irma Horton; and two brothers, Herbert Whited and Opal Whited. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughter, Ms. Delcie Boyd of Abingdon; son, Dallas Boyd of Dana Point, CA; and granddaughter, Susan Wallach.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Ralph Bostic and Rev. Carl Young officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Sallie L. Davis

Sallie Lipford Davis, 78, of Catawba, went to be with her heavenly father on Feb. 3, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center.

Born Feb. 16, 1925 in Halifax Co., she was the daughter of the late Wilson and Sallie Ann Lipford.

She lived many years in Tazewell, but for the last 11 years she lived in Catawba, where she was a member of the Welcome Baptist Church. She was a loving mother who loved her family deeply and will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Davis; one son, Harold E. Shearin; and one grandson, Chad Davis.

Survivors: sons, George W. Shearin and wife, Colleen, of Indian Trial, David R. Shearin and wife, Janet, of New Salem, R. Wilfred Shearin of Monroe, Dexter D. Davis and wife, Myra, of Mebane, NC, Michael Davis and wife, Wanda, of Monroe, Larry Davis of Kernesville, NC; daughter, Diane Rogich and husband, John, of Richlands; brother, Keith Morris of South Boston; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Indian Trail Chapel with Rev. Lawrence Funderburk officiating.

Burial followed at Ritch cemetery.

Raymond Deel

Raymond Deel, 64, of Hurley, died Feb. 2, 2004 at the home of his sister, Fayetta Phillips, in Hurley, following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Edgar A. and Carsie Hill Deel.

He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackie and Sammy Deel.

Survivors: sisters, Shelby Jean and husband, Clinton Blankenship, of Grundy, Fayetta and husband, Earl D. Phillips, of Hurley, Carol Jean and husband, Gene Mullins, of Cedar Bluff, Shelia and husband, Allen Long, of Manassas; and brother, Roger Deel of Midwest City, OK.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Roger Coleman, Freddie Ramey, Eddie Newsome, David Oquinn, Frank Newsome and Jackie Yates officiating.

Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Services were held Feb. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Imogene "Jean" Dye

Imogene H. "Jean" Dye, 67, of Route 1 (Abbs Valley) Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 6, 2004 at her home.

Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Roy H. and Marie E. Williams Hicks.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Hicks and Bobby Hicks, and one daughter-in-law, Joann Dye.

Survivors: husband, Charles Dye; son, Charles Dye, Jr. of Thompson Valley; grandsons, Dean Dye and Jason Dye; sisters, Iris Nunley and husband, Walter, of Martinsville, Delta Marrs and husband, Lee, of New Castle, DE; brothers, Elmer Hicks and wife, Kathleen, of Bear, DE, Lester Hicks and wife, Pauline, of New Castle, DE, Frank Hicks and wife, Pat, of Wilmington, DE, Arnold Hicks and wife, Lillian, of Middletown, DE; sister-in-law, Dale Marrs of Tazewell; brother-in-law, Lee Dye and wife, Alice, of Bishop; and 62 nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastors Charlie Marrs and Randy Marrs officiating.

Burial followed in Brewsterdale cemetery at Brewsterdale, WV.

George E. Etter

George E. Etter, 87, of the Gratton community in Tazewell, died Feb. 6, 2004 at his home.

Born at Gratton, he was a son of the late Allen and Catherine Dorsey Etter.

He was a retired carpenter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ercell Bourne Etter, and five brothers, Robert Etter, Crockett Etter, Eugene Etter, Elmer Etter, and Glen Etter.

Survivors: wife, Eleanor Shrader Etter; son, Paul R. Etter and wife, Bernice, of Middletown, MD; brothers, Varney Etter and wife, Louise, of Tazewell, Garland Etter and wife, Frances, of Richlands; sister, Virginia Etter of Tazewell; and grandsons, David Etter and Mark Etter, and wife, Susan, all of Frederick, MD.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Olivet cemetery at Gratton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made a favorite charity.

William (Bill) Frith

William Maurice (Bill) Frith, 63, a resident of Millbrook, AL, died peacefully at his residence Feb. 7, 2004.

He was a retired TSGT with the United States Air Force serving during the Vietnam War.

Survivors: wife, of 37 years, Janice R. Frith; daughters, Joann M. Adams of Millbrook, Billie J. Hurley (Ricky) of Prattville, AL; sons, Glenn R. Frith Jr. (Danette) of Isanti, MN, Troy L. Frith (Kim) of Knoxville, TN; sisters, Jean Hensley and Joyce Frith, both of Knoxville; brother, Jimmy Frith (Wanda) of Frankfort, OH; and grandchildren, Kody Frith, Stephanie Adams, Daniel Frith, Dustin Frith, Kaleigh Adams, Sadie Frith and William Hurley.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Winston Brooks officiating.

Interment will follow with full military honors at Brookside Memorial Gardens.

Brookside Funeral Home of Millbrook is in charge of arrangements.

Edward "Ray" Horn

Edward "Ray" Horn, 69, of Pilgrim Knob, in the Spruce Pine area, died Feb. 2, 2004 at his home.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Curtis and Gracie Kelly Horn.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the John Ratliff Post #164. He was a disabled coal miner having worked at Jewell Smokeless for 18 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lucian Horn, and one sister, Beulah Horn.

Survivors: wife of 47 years, Thelma Deel Horn; son, Darrell Horn and wife, Lynn, of Pilgrim Knob; daughter, Sandy Holmes and husband, Anthony, of Oakwood; brothers, Curtis Horn and Hubbard Horn, both of Pilgrim Knob, Gallie Cole of Compton Mountain; sister, Myrtle Honaker of Pilgrim Knob; and grandsons, Steven Coty Horn and Justin Redmond.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 5 at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Jack Ward officiating.

Burial followed in the Kelly cemetery on Compton Mountain.

Military graveside rites were conducted by John Ratliff Post #164.

Dorothy A. Johnson

Dorothy A. Johnson, 80, of Tazewell, died Feb. 3, 2004 at Parham Health Care in Richmond.

Born Jan. 2, 1924 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Will D. Meade and Julia Kate Cooper Meade.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Johnson; one son, Roger Dunford; four brothers, Earl Meade, Sam Meade, Felix Meade, and Junior Meade.

Survivors: sons, Frankie Dunford and wife, Wanda, Phillip "Butch" Dunford and wife, Imogene, all of Richmond, Danny Dean Dunford of Marion; brother, Carl Meade of Tazewell; sisters, Ethel Dotson and Betty Conley, both of Rocky Gap, Louise Park and husband, Roy, and Mansie Hester, all of Marion, Bernice Duncan of Alexandria, Margie Pinter and Ilene Sizemore, both of Tazewell; grandchildren, Brian, Brad, and Tracee, all of Richmond, Alease and William, both of Tazewell; and several great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Freddie Powers officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Samuel G. Lane

Samuel G. Lane, 81, of Bucyrus, OH, died Feb. 9, 2004 at the Ohio State University East Hospital in Columbus. He had been in declining health but his death was unexpected.

Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late James and Eva (Hurt) Lane.

He attended school in Richlands and severed in the U.S. Army during W.W. II from Feb. 1943 to Dec. 1945. He moved to the area in 1953 and worked at Swan for 33 years until his retirement in 1986. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing and his grandchildren. He received an award for kindness at Altercare.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Lane, and seven brothers, Cort, Ebb, Clarence, Edgar, Joe, Orbin and Clifford.

On June 22, 1950 he married Sylvia Miller and she survives.

Additional survivors: daughters, Bonnie Betz and husband, Bruce, and Diane Lane, all of Bucyrus; son, Tom Lane of Bucyrus; grandchildren, Kim (Quinten) Boyd, Kelli (Dave) Linn, Brandon and Amber Lane; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Stefan, Aubrey and Shelbee; brothers, Den Lane of Allendale, MI, Andy Lane of Doran; and mother-in-law, Daisy Miller of Bucyrus.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus with Rev. Lewis Copley and Chris Stewart officiating.

Burial with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #181 of Bucyrus will be at Crawford County Memory Gardens Crestline.
