Michael P. Hackney

Michael Paul Hackney, 37, of the Lester’s Fork area of Route #1, Grundy, died Jan. 31, 2004, following a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Paul Conner and Cora Lee Newsome Hackney of Route #1, Grundy.

He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Regular Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 1985 and was a disabled coal miner.

Additional survivors: wife, Kimberly Salmons Hackney; daughters, Aimee Michelle Hackney and Chelsea Paige Hackney of Rt. #1, Grundy; son, Joshua Michael Hackney of Rt. 1, Grundy; sisters, Patricia and husband, Larry Helton, of Hurley, Joyce and husband, Billy Helton, of Rt. #1, Grundy, Lisa and husband, Rusty Osborne, of Keen Mountain; and brother, Steve Hackney of Rt. #1, Grundy.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. in North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church, at Wolford, with Elders Josh Justus, Jr., Gary Justus, James Stacy and Bill McCoy officiating.

Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.

Services were conducted at the church Feb. 3 and will be conducted Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.

Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of arrangements.

Lois H. Henderson

Lois Hillman Henderson, 83, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Richlands, died Jan. 26, 2004 at the Laurels at Highland Creek in Charlotte.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Elsie T. Owens Hillman of Finney and later Honaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter Tillou Henderson, and two brothers, Miles Hillman and Bud Hillman.

She was a 1936 graduate of Honaker High School, attended Emory & Henry from 1936 to 1938 and graduated Cum Laude from St. Luke’s Hospital school of nursing in Bluefield, WV, on Oct. 28, 1941. She attended the University of Virginia for a brief internship in teaching methods and became director of nursing at St. Luke’s.

She joined the United States Army in April of 1943, and was commissioned as a Lieutenant and served as a nurse in Ora Bay, New Guinea and later in Manila in the Philippines where she remained until the end of the war. She was also a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church.

She was the loving mother of seven children who loved her dearly and will cherish her memory. Sons, Steve Henderson of Columbia, SC, Dean Henderson of Richlands, Dow Henderson of Tazewell; daughters, Merry Tillou Thompson of Lexington Park, MD, Kathy Adams of Davidson, NC, Jane Hasko of Bluff City, TN, Holly Henderson of Charlotte; sister, Patsy Junker of Nashville, TN; brother, Bob Hillman of Lebanon; grandchildren, Jessica Stone, Ashley and Morgan Weatherly, Emily and Erin Redden, Trevor, Sydney, and Kristen Henderson and Nick Kilgore; and great-grandson, Kyle Joseph Stone.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. at the Emory United Methodist Church on the campus of Emory and Henry College at Emory with Rev. Tim Cobler officiating.

A graveside service was conducted at 3:30 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Rev. Henry Johnson officiating.

Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 of Richlands and Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter #31 conducted military graveside rites.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

Bennie D. Keen

Bennie D. Keen, 56, of Richlands, died Jan. 31, 2004 at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Thomas D. and Ruby Maynard Keen, both Buchanan County natives.

He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area, was a 1968 graduate of Richlands High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Open Door Community Church.

He was a retired miner with Island Creek Coal Company V.P.#3 at Vansant, and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1640.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Glen Keen and Rufus James Keen, and one sister, Myrtle Fields.

Survivors: sisters, Pat Rife of Belfast, Shirley Altizer of Panama City, FL; and half-sister, Patty Selenski of New York, NY.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Charlie McGlothlin officiating.

Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 of Richlands and Disabled American Veterans Tazewell Co. Ch. #31 will conduct military graveside rites.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Open Door Community Church, 285 Kirby Road, Raven, VA 24639.

Jacqueline G. Lerch

Jacqueline Gail Woodward Lerch, 35, of Wilkesboro, NC, formerly of Richlands, died Jan. 25, 2004 in Wilkes County, NC.

Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of Gary Horn and Sandra Carol Dye Vandyke, both of Richlands.

She attended Richlands High School in Richlands and was a graduate of Alleghany High School in Sparta, NC. After leaving the Richlands area, she made her home in North Carolina the past 15 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Scott Allen Lerch.

Additional survivors: her special companion, Ronnie Smithey of Moravian Falls, NC; sons, Christopher Ryan Rogich of Richlands, Destin Chance Lerch of Boone, NC; daughter, Enchancia Hope Lerch of Boone; sisters, Patricia W. Randolph and Sherri L. Walsh, both of Boone; brothers, Alan Ray Woodward of Laurel Springs, NC, William Conrad Woodward of Seoul, South Korea; nephews, Heath Woodward, Jared Woodward, and Tyler Ward; nieces, Kimberly Woodward, Brittany Joyce, and Summer Walsh; maternal grandmother, Charlotte Ford of Richlands; and maternal great-grandmother, Lillian Keene of Knoxville, TN.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Brother Robert Short officiating.

Interment followed in the Cline Family cemetery at Raven.

Darrell W. Moran

Darrell Wayne Moran, 42, of Redwood, died Jan. 31, 2004, at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Orange County, FL, he was a son of the late Charles and Ruby Darlene Christian Moran.

He had made his home in the Redwood area the past seven years and was a construction worker.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John C. "Paddle" and Virginia Rachel Young Christian.

Survivors: daughter, Angela Moran of Pulaski; son, Nicholas Moran of the home; sister, Tanya Berry of Winter Haven, FL; uncles and aunts, Dorothy Cole, Irene Smith, Wilford Christian, Fred Christian, Harold Christian, and Hubert Whitt; and several cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Fox Memorial cemetery on Reynolds Ridge near Jewell Ridge with Rev. George Cole officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Puckett

Virginia Ruth Puckett, 87, of Pounding Mill, died Jan. 29, 2004 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Cleveland, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie L. and Ava Dye Puckett, both Tazewell County natives.

She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area, was a retired LPN at the Mattie Williams Hospital for over 40 years, and attended the Cedar Bluff Community Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Puckett, and four brothers, Clyde, Charlie, Dewey, and Clarence Puckett.

Survivors: sons, Eugene Puckett of Pounding Mill, Ronald Fuller and wife, Rita, of Pulaski; sister, Beulah Puckett of Claypool Hill; adopted brother, Junior Boyd of Claypool Hill; grandchildren, Rhonda Gail Dykeman and Sarah Lynn Fuller; great-granddaughter, Olivia Dykeman; one niece; and several nephews.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Darrell Sutherland and Rev. Charles Hubbard officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Roger William Rasnake

Roger William Rasnake, 17, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 26, 2004 at his home.

Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Dee Pritt Rasnake of North Tazewell, and David "Butch" Rasnake of Dry Fork.

He was a senior at Tazewell High School and a member of the Tazewell High School Bulldogs Football Squad. During middle school years, he attended Wilkinson County Middle School in Georgia. He was a member of the Tonawanda Band of Senecas Tribe in Basom, NY.

Additional survivors: sisters, Becky Rasnake and Carrie Rasnake, both of the home, and several aunts and uncles.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Brita R. Satterfield

Brita R. Satterfield, 64, of Orange Park, FL, died Jan. 31, 2004 in a Florida hospital.

Born in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Haze Blankenship and Pearl Beavers Blankenship Baldwin, former Bandy residents.

She had resided in Orange Park, since 1983.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Greta Miller, and one brother-in-law, Bill Miller.

Survivors: loving husband, Donald A. Satterfield; sons, Brian Pease of Massachusetts, Michael Pease of Orange Park; stepchildren, Greg Satterfield and Mrs. Terri Clement; brothers, Tommy Blankenship of Tennessee, Ronnie Blankenship of Herndon; sisters, Mary Jennings and Vickie Clontz, both of Hillsville, Dorcas Wolfe of Herndon, Mrs. Chris Rice of Texas; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Holly Hill Funeral Home in Middleburg, FL, with Rev. Dale Jennings officiating.

Interment will follow in the Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery.

Viola (Gracie) Whited

Viola (Gracie) Plaster Whited, 88, of the Pine Creek community of Swords Creek, went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jan. 29, 2004 in a Richlands hospital.

Born in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Bob and Jennie Robinette Plaster.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended the Pine Creek Pole Church her entire life. She served as treasurer of the Sunday School for 35 years. She spent her entire life singing songs of praise to her Lord. She was a well-known and well-loved alto singer for the Swords Creek Quartet and the Whited Family Quartet. She was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, neighbor and friend.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, of 57 years. Herbert Paul Whited; one daughter, Wiletta (Dib) Gregory; one grandson, Larry Bostic; one great-grandson, Matthew Evans; one sister, Vergie Robinette; and four brothers, Bill Plaster, Gaines Plaster, Charles Plaster and Burt Plaster.

Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Tenny and Ralph Bostic, Judy and Jerry Hess and Randy Gregory, all of Swords Creek; sisters, Dora Pope of Richmond, Macy Hickman of Honaker; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Artie Boyd of Abingdon, Avis Plaster of Richlands, Irene Plaster of Newport News, Mattie Plaster of Manassas, Edith Plaster of Swords Creek; several nieces, nephews; and a host of friends.

A celebration of her Christian life was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jess Whited, Rev. Daniel Richardson and Rev. Dennis White officiating.

Interment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery at Richlands.
