Jerry W. Bostic

Jerry Wayne Bostic, 44, of Venia, went to be with the Lord Jan. 22, 2004 in Nickelsville.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Ella Marie Johnson Bostic of Council and the late Edward Dewey Bostic, Jr.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a devoted husband and dad. He was a 1977 graduate of Council High School and was a carpenter. He attended Venia’s Chapel Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Norman Edward Bostic.

Additional survivors: wife of 23 years, Donna Faye Bostic of the home; son, Dakota Tyler Bostic of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Deidra Nicole and Larry A. "Artie" Nuckles, Jr. of Abingdon; sisters, Virginia "Lois" Stevens of Honaker, Rosa Bostic of Council; brothers, James Bostic, Elmer Bostic and Darrell Bostic, all of Honaker, Roy Bostic of Pilgrim’s Knob, Brady Bostic of Vansant, Charlie Bostic, Ronald Bostic and Danny Bostic, all of Council, Gerald Bostic of Lebanon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Guy Harris and Rev. Russell Harris officiating.

Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.

Margaret "Margo" Dowdy

Margaret J. "Margo" Dowdy, 71, of the Springville section of North Tazewell, died Jan. 19, 2004 at her home following a short illness.

Born at Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Walter P. and Ruth A. Wooldridge Dowdy.

She had made her home in Tazewell County her entire life. She was a graduate of Richlands High School, Class of 1950. She had been employed with General Instrument at Tazewell and retired from the Town of Bluefield having been with the Bluefield, VA, Police Department. She enjoyed and was a good bowler. She was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Maria Dowdy Tarver.

Survivor: brother, Kevin Gregory Dowdy of Linden.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Bill McDaniel officiating.

Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Darrell Hagerman

Darrell Hagerman, 56, of Ashtabula, OH, formerly of Oakwood, died Jan. 20, 2004 in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born in Oakwood, he was the son of the late Grant and Eilleen Puckett Hagerman and has lived between Ashtabula and Oakwood, over the past 34 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with Dominio Logistics. He was a member of the Army-Navy Club and enjoyed reading and spending time with his granddaughter, Gianni, and his dog.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Melanie Sue Hagerman in 1975.

Survivors: daughter, Elizabeth Hagerman of Ashtabula; granddaughter, Gianni Hagerman; brothers, Glenn Hagerman of Florida, Doug and Allen Hagerman, both of Virginia; and sisters, Faye Hagerman of Virginia and Barbara Sexton and Peggy Scott, both of North Carolina.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with his brother, Glenn Hagerman, leading the services.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Military graveside rites were conducted by Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V.

Contributions may be directed to the family, in care of Elizabeth Hagerman, 6024 Washington Blvd., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.

Lois H. Henderson

Lois Hillman Henderson, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Richlands, died Jan. 26, 2004 at a Charlotte Retirement Home following a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Rev. Alvin Holmes

Rev. Alvin Lane Holmes, 77, of Richlands, passed from this life to eternal life, Jan. 23, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Seaboard, he was a son of the late Vick and Margaret Lawson Holmes.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Marshall Randalph Holmes; another son, Tony Michael Holmes; four brothers, Willy Holmes, Arvil Holmes, Thedford Holmes, and Robert Holmes; and two sisters, Carrie Helton and Mary Puckett. He was the last surviving member of his generation.

He gave his heart to the Lord in 1958 and was baptized in Jesus’ name in 1959. He founded the United Pentecostal Church in Richlands in 1966, where he was currently serving as Senior Pastor, and the First Apostolic Christian School in 1979. He founded the United Pentecostal Church of Saltville in 1990. He was an ordained minister of the United Pentecostal Church International and had served on the Virginia District Board as a Presbyter for 35 years.

He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1943-1946. He served in all six theaters of the War aboard the U. S. S. Wooniski. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean five times and the Pacific twice during his military service. He was awarded five ribbons, five medals, and four stars. He was President and Co-owner of V. H. Holmes Salvage Company, a family business started by his father 65 years ago. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors: wife, of 53 years, Betty Burress Holmes; daughter, Patricia and husband, Farley Christian, Jr., of Richlands; sons, Jonathan Holmes and wife, Melanie, and Anthony Holmes, all of Richlands; foster daughter, Robin Christian and husband, Lonnie, of Leesburg; granddaughters, Evangeline Barnhart, Shenandoah Walraven, Tammy Bouton, Micah Holmes, Hannah Christian, Ariana Holmes, and Aleah Holmes; grandson, Jostin Holmes; five great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Loyale Holmes of Hampton, Martha Holmes of Richlands, Rebecca Holmes of Galax; and his church family.

A celebration of life was conducted Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at the United Pentecostal Church in Richlands with Rev. James Kelly of Spottslyvania and Rev. Robert Hall of Chesapeake officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 of Richlands and Disabled American Veterans Tazewell Chapter #31 conducted military graveside rites.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

Joyce Honaker

Joyce Honaker, 57, of Richlands, died Jan. 20, 2004 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Madgie Wimmer Cole, both Buchanan County natives.

She had made her home in the Richlands area the past 43 years and was a former nurses aide at the Mattie Williams Hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert D. Cole and Hubert J. Cole.

Survivors: husband, Johnny Lee Honaker, Sr.; son, Johnny Lee Honaker, Jr. and fiancée, Kimberly Ann Hilbert, of Richlands; sisters, Girtrue Jackson and husband, Eli, of Piedmont, SC, Yuvon Mullins and husband, Ray, of Jewell Ridge, Lois Ann Houchins and husband, Ray, of Ft. Chiswell; and brothers, R. C. Cole and wife, Peggy, of Jolo, WV, and Dennie C. Cole and wife, Vickie, of Piedmont.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Oak Grove Church of Christ on White Mt. near Pea Patch with Rev. Hobert Kennedy, Evangelist Bob Smith, and Rev. McGinnis Rife officiating.

Interment followed at the Cole Family cemetery on White Mt. near Pea Patch.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

Calbert W. Mathews

Calbert W. Mathews, 62, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 22, 2004 at his home.

Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Claude M. and Harriet Ellen Asbury Mathews.

He was a farmer and avid fisherman.

Survivors: wife, Phyllis Johnson Mathews; sons, Claude Melvin Mathews of Dry Fork, Calbert William Mathews, Jr. of the home; daughter, Deborah Kay Mathews of North Tazewell; brother, Herman Matthews and wife, Mary, of Gratton; sisters, Lucille Cruey and husband, Carl, of Georgia, Geraldine Beckett and husband, Kenny, of Ellicott City, MD, Katherine Warren and husband, Rick, of Eldersburg, MD, Barbara Ann Bewley and husband, Royce, of Sykesville, MD, Rose Marie Matthews of Tazewell; and six grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Roger Lester officiating.

Burial followed at the Asbury Family cemetery in the Cove section of Tazewell County.

Lula K. McCall

Lula Kathrine Cunningham McCall, 96, of Richlands, died Jan. 24, 2004 at her home.

She was born in Washington County to the late George W. and Lillian Preston Johnson Cunningham.

She lived most of her life in Richlands and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richlands.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. (Bill) McCall, Sr.; four brothers, Carl J. Cunningham, George E. Cunningham, John F. Cunningham and Jacob P. Cunningham; two sisters, Mary C. Adams Genovley and Virginia C. Goodlett; and one daughter-in-law Vivian Sewell McCall.

Survivors: son, George W. (Bill) McCall, Jr. of Richlands; sister, Margaret C. (Peg) Cole of Abingdon; granddaughter, Kathryn M. Culpepper of Richmond; grandsons, George W. McCall III, John M. McCall II and Joseph W. McCall, all of Richlands, Marcus S. McCall of Greenville, SC; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 27 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. David Brannock officiating.

Entombment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial Mausoleum at Richlands.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 402 Suffolk Ave. Richlands, VA 24641 or to the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 209 Cedar Bluff, VA 24609.

Carolyn B. Musick

Carolyn B. Musick, 81, of Richmond, formerly of Bluefield, died Jan. 20, 2004 in a Richmond hospital.

Born in Maybeury, she was a daughter of the late William E. Burnett and Elizabeth Tolbert Burnett.

She was a member of the Bluefield Moose Lodge 1079. She was a member of the Bland St. United Methodist Church in Bluefield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Frank Musick.

Survivors: son, David Berry of Richmond; sister, Mildred Louise Campbell of Richmond; and brother, Charles Clay Burnett of Bluefield, WV.

Graveside services were conducted Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Mausoleum Chapel in Bluewell, WV, with Rev. Warren Faulknier.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

Guy Musick

Guy Musick, 83, of the Garden Creek section of Buchanan Co., died Jan. 24, 2004 in a Johnson City, TN, veterans hospital following a long illness.

Born at Honaker, he was the son of the late Cummins and Sarah Fletcher Musick.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and attended the Garden Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents. he was preceded in death by one sister, Madeline Ester Honaker, and two brothers, Vince Musick and Leroy Musick.

Survivors: wife of 57 years, Helen Hale Musick; son, Harold Musick and wife, Willis, of Mavisdale; grandson, David Musick of Chesapeake; sister, Bertie Hale of Council; and brothers, Ralph Musick of Meadowview, Reason Musick of Lebanon, and Harless Musick of Rosedale.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Jody Breeding and Rev. Paul McNalley officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the John Ratilff Post #164 of the American Legion at Grundy.

Services were held at the funeral home Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
