Shirley Naomi Hess

Shirley Naomi Hess, 76, of Richlands, died Jan. 12, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Myrtle Burk Houchins.

She was a member of the Hill Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Beverly (J. Brownie) Hess and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: son, Audney Hess and wife, Lynn, of Richlands; daughters, Caroline Keene and husband, Ron, of Knoxville, TN, Patty Salyers and husband, Al, of Swords Creek, Rhonda Cordle and husband, Mark, of Richlands, and Angela Hess Deskins of Marvin; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. William Bill Fletcher officiating.

Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Alva Hall Looney

Alva Hall Looney, 87, of the Upper Mill Branch section of Rt. 3, Grundy, died Jan. 17, 2004 at Buchanan General Hospital following a short illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Flora Cooper Hall.

She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, a loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theordore R. Looney, Jan. 10, 1987; three brothers, Carl, Cecil, Jr. and Edwin Hall; one grandson, Matson Wade Boyer, Oct. 8, 1990; and one half-brother, Joe Justus.

Survivors: daughters, Janice and husband, Frank Boyer, and Brenda and husband, Bob Folson, all of Grundy, Maxine and husband, Mark Grounds, of Jacksonville, FL, Sue and husband, Pete Stevenson, of Cedar Bluff; son, Harold and wife, Joyce Looney, of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and special lady caregivers, Lorraine Musick, Lorraine Stacy and Mollie Rasnake.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Garnell Gilbert and Elder Lawrence Jackson officiating.

Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens and Claypool Hill.

A song service was conducted at the funeral home Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.

Delma G. Hubbard

Delma Gray Honaker Hubbard, 84, of Rogersville, TN, died Jan. 13, 2004 in a Heritage Manor of Rogersville.

Born in Honaker, VA she was a daughter of the late Calvin and Mary Thompson Honaker.

She lived in Rogersville for the past 15 years, moving there from Honaker. She was a member of the New Garden Primitive Baptist Church and had formerly been employed as a hairdresser at Fuller’s Beauty Salon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Hubbard; one grandson, Roger L. Hubbard, Jr.; three brothers, Paul Honaker, Herbert Honaker and Garnet Honaker; and four sisters, Nola Stilwell, Elmer Barnhart, Retha Honaker and Ruby Rasnake.

Survivors: sons, Roger Hubbard and wife, Delores, of Kingsport, TN, Roy Hubbard of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Will Hubbard and Kimi Hubbard, both of Kingsport; sister, Ruth Lockhart of Rosedale; and brother, Foster Honaker of Honaker.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Elder George Ben Combs and Elder Delford Ward officiating.

Graveside services were conducted Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at Russell Memorial cemetery in Lebanon with interment following.

Shirley Meadows

Shirley Elizabeth Graham Meadows, 50, of Belmont, died Jan. 10, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital.

She was a native of Tazewell and a daughter of the late Elmer "Speck" Graham and stepdaughter of the late Clyde R. Stewart.

She worked for Pharr Yarns.

Survivors: husband, Patrick Beasley; son, Chucky Meadows of Belmont; mother, Lucille Osborne Stewart of Tazewell; brothers, Jack Graham and Miles Graham, both of Tazewell, Henry Graham of Spencer Mountain, Chester Graham of Clover, SC, Eddie Graham of Springwood; and sisters, Rosa McBride of Tazewell, and Barbara Hash of Belmont.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at McLean Funeral Directors Bumgardner Chapel in Belmont.

Interment followed in Greenwood cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28210.

William Roger Murray

William Roger Murray, 57, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 14, 2004, at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born at North Tazewell, he was a son of the late George Dula Murray and Charlotte Graham Murray.

He was a member of the US Marine Corps.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, George David "Bud" Murray, Sr., and an infant sister.

Survivors: sisters, Katherine L. Crouse and husband, James, of Bluefield, VA, Carol Sue Hicks and husband, Jerry, of Statesville, NC; niece, Melissa Keller of Idaho; and nephews, Michael Harold of Bluefield, VA, and Joey Murray of Bishop.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Avery Lynch and the Rev. Eugene Herald officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

William C. (Bill) "Pig" Pruett, Jr.

William C. (Bill) "Pig" Pruett, Jr., 77, of Bluefield, died Jan. 15, 2004 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of the late William Crockett Pruett and Sheila Davis Pruett.

He was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, VA, and served in the U.S. Army during WW II, having served in the Philippines. He was former owner of Little Pigs Barbecue in Bluefield and was owner of Valley Ford Dealership in Alderson until his retirement.

He was affectionately known as the "Godfather" because of his involvement and interest with the Graham High School football team for over 30 years and other sports activities at the school. He was the designer of the Graham Star "G" which is the school emblem. He had attended Graham High School and graduated from Greenbrier Military School.

Survivors: wife, Reba Harris Pruett; brothers, Dr. Charles D. Pruett and wife, Edna L., of Bluefield; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Edward A. Fisher officiating.

Entombment followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Graham High School Athletic Dept., 210 Valleydale, Bluefield, VA, or to the First Baptist Church, 1325 Augusta St., Bluefield, WV 24701.

Mary L. Ruble

Mary Louise Ruble, 89, of Bluefield-Tazewell Rd., Bluefield, VA, died Jan. 3, 2004 in Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born in Tazewell County, she was daughter of the late Henry John Lambert and Sarah Lambert.

She was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Witten Ruble, who died Dec. 13, 2003; three brothers, Tom Lambert, Claude Lambert, Peery Lambert; and two sisters, Rose Cable and Lessie Lambert. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughter, Judy R. Perdue of Princeton, WV; grandson, Randy Perdue of Millers Creek, NC; and great-granddaughter, Amanda H. Perdue of Bluefield, VA.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Tom Reed officiating.

Burial followed in Grandview Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Rt. 2, Box 229, Bluefield, VA 24605.

John T. Stevenson

John Thomas Stevenson, 42, of Oak Ridge, TN, died Jan. 6, 2004 at his home following a brief illness.

Born at Oak Ridge, he was the son of Mary Marguerette Dye Stevenson of Oak Ridge and the late Clarence E. Stevenson, Jr.

He was owner of Stevenson Movers and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church at Oak Ridge.

Additional survivors: brother, Joseph Scott Stevenson of Oak Ridge; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Graveside services were conducted Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating. Burial followed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 320 Robertsville Rd., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Dan Stout

Dan Stout, 78, of Daytona Beach, FL, died Jan. 10, 2004 in a Port Orange, FL, hospital.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Dan and Mary Caroline McGlothlin Stout, both Tazewell County natives.

He had made his home in the Daytona Beach area since 1957 and was a charter member of the Daytona Beach Community College faculty.

He was a graduate of Richlands High School, Emory & Henry College, and received his master’s degree from Memphis State University. He was a former high school teacher and elementary school principal in the state of Virginia. He had served a term of president of the Florida Association of Community Colleges and received a special award from the Alumni Association in 1988. He was an ordained elder and member of the Highlands Presbyterian Church and was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia and Minnie Coker, Pauline Stout, and Lucille Gunter; six brothers, Howard, Joe, Ervin, Paul, Edward, and Charles Stout; and two half-brothers, Lawrence and Clinton Young. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors: wife, Ruth Stout; daughters, Carolyn Pearl of Honolulu, HI, Deb Stout of Durham, NC; son, Stephen Stout of Titusville, FL; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Highlands Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bob Anderson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Daytona Memorial Park and Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Curtis Reedy "Ted" Altizer

Thelma Curtis Reedy "Ted" Altizer, 88, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 6, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born at Cliffield, she was a daughter of the late Truman Arthur and Mollie Asbury Reedy.

She was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County. She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church at Bishop and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #17 at Bishop.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Daniel Altizer; one grandson, Charles Kevin Altizer; five brothers, Charles Reedy, John Reedy, Jack Hall, Orbin Hall and Tom Hall; and three sisters, Mrs. Rex (Maude) Doyle, Mrs. James (Ruth) Carmichael, and Mrs. Clarence (Louise) Willard.

Survivors: sons, Rev. Guy D. Altizer, Jr. and wife, Cookie, of Simpsonville, SC, Gerald W. Altizer and wife, Ann, of Bluefield, VA; foster daughter, Dolly Hunt of Denton, NC; brother, Audney David Reedy of Kansas City, KS; granddaughter, Debbie Altizer Wall and husband, Stan, of Bluefield, VA; grandsons, Carl W. Altizer and wife, Debbie, of Anderson, SC, Richard A. Altizer and wife, Suzanne, of Chicago, IL; great- grandchildren, Thomas, Kristen, and Caroline Altizer of Anderson, Katie and Ricky Altizer of Chicago, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 9 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Guy D. Altizer, Jr. officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
