Amos Eugene Lambert

Amos Eugene Lambert, 81, of Burkes Garden, died Jan. 11, 2004 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 17 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell.

Burial will follow at the Central Church cemetery in Burkes Garden.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Murray Wallace "Littleman" Lawson

Murray Wallace "Littleman" Lawson, 82, of Whitewood, died Jan. 4, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital following an extended illness.

Born in Patrick County, he was the son of the late Novis Homer and Nettie Thompson Lawson, both North Carolina natives.

He had made his home in the Whitewood area for the past 56 years and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired Vice President and mechanic and truck boss for Clifton and McDonald Coal Company. He was a member of UMWA Local #1594.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gaynell Cole Lawson; one daughter, Tonya Leigh Lawson; two sisters, Freda Stowe and Hester Fain; two brothers, Erb and Nash Lawson; and one infant brother.

Survivors: daughters, Patricia Honaker and husband, Jerry, of Pilgrim Knob, Redonna Mitchell and husband, Allen, of Jewell Ridge; son, Arthur H. Lawson and wife, Sue, of Whitewood; sister, Elva Underwood of Roanoke; brother, Rev. Earnest Lawson of Patrick Springs; special sisters-in-law, Roberta Ritchie, Arizona Cooke and Venus Mullins; special friends, Armalee Brown, Sue Stiltner, Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Robinson and Mose and Naomi "Top" Horn; and grandchildren, Brad Lawson, Alison Lawson, Jessica Sparks and Lindsay Honaker.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Andy Maynard and Rev. Roger Street officiating.

Interment followed at Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Cuba W. Lester

Cuba Wampler Lester, 78, of Council, died Jan. 6, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born in Council, she was a daughter of the late Henderson and Nora Belle Tiller Wampler.

A lifelong resident of the Council area, she was a member of the Russell Fork Free Will Baptist Church and a 1945 graduate of Council High School.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lester, four brothers and seven sisters.

Survivors: adopted daughter, Linda Epling Jackson and special friend, Gary Jackson, of Davenport; brother, Jack Wampler of Naples, FL; grandsons, Jason Epling and wife, Lisa, of Max Meadows, Caleb Epling of Davenport; step-great-granddaughters, Tori and Kala; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson, Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Giles Wilson officiating.

Interment followed in the Tiller cemetery at Council.

Billie S. Matney

Billie S. Matney, 68, of Bristol, VA, died Jan. 7, 2004 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN.

Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Mose Stevenson and Flora Lawson Stevenson.

She attended Kings Way Baptist Church in Bristol, VA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Lester, Louise Harrison, and Nancy Combs, and one brother, James Henry Stevenson.

Survivors: husband, Ralph Wayne Matney; son, Mark W. Matney and wife, Terri, of Bristol, VA; daughter, Melinda Matney Martin and husband, Tim, of Bristol, VA; grandchildren, Baker Martin, Baxter Martin, Brooke Martin, and Ashley Jenkins; great-grandchild, Alex Jenkins; brothers, Roy Lee Stevenson of Cedar Bluff, William E. "Pokey" Stevenson of Abbs Valley; and sisters, Edith Turner of North Tazewell, and Hazel Combs, and Ruby Christian, both of Pounding Mill.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Eddie Nash officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

James C. Noblitt Jr.

James Claude Noblitt Jr., 65, of Marion, IN, died Jan. 4, 2004 after a massive stroke at the Veterans Administration Northern Indiana Health Care Center in Marion.

Born in Bristol, VA, to James Claude Noblitt and Virgie Mae Reed Noblitt.

He grew up in Bishop and attended Tazewell High School. He joined the Navy in 1955 and served his country during the Suez Canal Conflict. After leaving the Navy in 1958 he moved around the country and lived and worked in several states and settled in Marion, IN, in 1983. He worked with Jet Express while in Marion. He was also an active member of the American Veterans and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors: sister, Barbara Santiago of Freeport, OH, and her daughters, Shannon Duda of Freeport, Tammie Jarvis of Cleveland, OH; his three children born of his first marriage, Karolyne Delaine Putnode and her husband, Steven, of Jefferson, MD, Kerry David Noblitt of Elizabeth, CO, Kandi Dee Keaton and her husband, Howard, of Silver Spring, MD; seven grandchildren; one adopted grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Chapel United Methodist Church in North Tazewell where he spent his earlier years of life. Rev. Kenneth Gillespie, pastor of Riverside Chapel, will officiate at the service.

Private interment will follow at Grandview cemetery in Bluefield, VA.

Flowers may be sent through Four Seasons Florist in Tazewell or memorials made to the Riverside Chapel, 816 West Riverside Drive, North Tazewell, VA 24630.

Needham, Storey and Wampner Funeral Service in Marion, IN, is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Mary Perkins

Rose Mary Deskins Perkins, 50, of Honaker, died Jan. 7, 2004 at her home.

She was a daughter of Charlie Deskins of Honaker and the late Martha Barker Deskins.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Additional survivors: daughter, Sonya Deskins of Blacksburg; son, Lonnie Perkins of Swords Creek; sisters, Barbara Miller of Swords Creek, Lois June Hurd of Honaker; brother, Ron Deskins of Honaker; and grandson, Timothy Perkins of Swords Creek.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Leo Hess and Rev. Steve Damron officiating.

Interment followed in the Deskins cemetery in Honaker.

Mary "Granny" Reynolds

Mary Katherine "Granny" Peck Reynolds, 75, of the Fletcher’s Ridge section of Rowe, went home to be with the Lord at her home Jan. 8, 2004.

Born Nov. 8, 1928 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Ellis and Gracie True Stump Peck.

She was a lifelong resident of the Russell and Buchanan county areas and was a member of the Venia Chapel Church. She served the Lord 67 years, since she was eight years old.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Perry Henry Reynolds; one son, Perry Junior Reynolds; two sisters, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Plaster and Myrtle Reynolds; and two brothers, Billy Peck and Burgess Lee "Pete" Peck.

Survivors: daughters, Gaylena Reynolds and Sharon Kay Reynolds, both of the home, Dolly Deloach and husband, Paul, of Clintwood, Wanda Fay Hess and husband, Allen, of Honaker; sons, Thurman Reynolds and wife, Regina, of Fletcher’s Ridge, Earl Reynolds and wife, Melissa, of Stinson’s Ridge; grandchildren, Maranda "Ranny" Reynolds of Fletcher’s Ridge, Jonathan "Jon" Hess and Retha "Reffie" Hess, both of Honaker, Shannon Deloach of Clintwood and Nathan Reynolds of Stinson's Ridge; sister, Mimmiah Bell Reynolds of Swords Creek; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Guy Harris, Rev. Troy Harris, Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Eugene Miller officiating.

Interment followed in the Reynolds cemetery at Swords Creek.

Eugene "Buck" Shawver

Eugene "Buck" Shawver, 74, of Shawvers Mill, died Jan. 10, 2004 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

He was a son of the late Will Ed and Clara Kinser Shawver.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ailene Peery and Mildred Heldreth.

Survivors: wife, Ruth Daniel Shawver; sons, Donald Shawver and wife, Trudy, of Kingsport, TN, Michael Shawver and wife, Angie, of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, Cameron, Christopher, Travis, Tara and Tabitha Shawver; sisters, Alice Stange and Mary Sue Walberts, both of Milwaukee, WI; and brothers, Don Shawver and Bill Shawver, both of Shawvers Mill, and Ed Shawver of North Tazewell.

A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Lee Blackburn officiating.

Burial was private.

Kenneth Spurgeon

Kenneth Spurgeon, 63, died Dec. 31, 2003 at his home in Plant City, FL.

Born in North Tazewell, he was a son of Harriett Spurgeon and the late Frazier Spurgeon.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Vandyke Spurgeon, and a sister-in-law, Lynn Spurgeon.

Additional survivors: brothers, R.G. Spurgeon and wife, Mary, of North Tazewell, Clarence Spurgeon and wife, Linda, of Frost Proof, FL, Donald Spurgeon of Rockville, MD; sons, Ronald Spurgeon and wife, Michelle, and Allen Spurgeon and wife, Kim, all of Florida; grandchildren, Robert and June; step daughters, Bobby Ugiansky and Judy Kelly, both of Maryland; stepson, Tommy Vandyke of West Virginia; four step-grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren. Other relatives in the area include aunts, Evelyn Beavers and husband, Walter, of Tip Top, Janice Hayes and husband, Frank, and family of Baily, Ella Kate Snell and family of Tip Top, Drema Ritter and family of Springville; cousins, Jesse Ritter and Orren Spurgeon; three very special nieces, Yvonne McGuire, Melissa Spurgeon, and her mother, Nancy.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 3 in Florida with burial at Hopewell Memorial Gardens in Plant City, FL.

John T. Stevenson

John Thomas Stevenson, 42, of Oak Ridge, TN, died Jan. 6, 2004 at his home following a brief illness.

Born at Oak Ridge, he was the son of Mary Marguerette Dye Stevenson of Oak Ridge and the late Clarence E. Stevenson, Jr.

He was owner of Stevenson Movers and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church at Oak Ridge.

Additional survivors: brother, Joseph Scott Stevenson of Oak Ridge; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Graveside services were conducted Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating with burial following.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 320 Robertsville Rd., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Dan Stout

Dan Stout, 78, of Daytona Beach, FL, died Jan. 10, 2004 in a Port Orange, FL, hospital.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Dan and Mary Caroline McGlothlin Stout, both Tazewell County natives.

He had made his home in the Daytona Beach area since 1957 and was a charter member of the Daytona Beach Community College faculty.

He was a graduate of Richlands High School, Emory & Henry College, and received his master’s degree from Memphis State University. He was a former high school teacher and elementary school principal in the state of Virginia. He had served a term of president of the Florida Association of Community Colleges and received a special award from the Alumni Association in 1988. He was an ordained elder and member of the Highlands Presbyterian Church and was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia and Minnie Coker, Pauline Stout, and Lucille Gunter; six brothers, Howard, Joe, Ervin, Paul, Edward, and Charles Stout; and two half-brothers, Lawrence and Clinton Young. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors: wife, Ruth Stout; daughters, Carolyn Pearl of Honolulu, HI, Deb Stout of Durham, NC; son, Stephen Stout of Titusville, FL; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Highlands Presbyterian Church with the Dr. Bob Anderson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Daytona Memorial Park and Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
