Mrs. Jo Mounts

Mrs. Jo Mounts (Nevada Joanne Mounts) born Sept. 12, 1929 in Las Vegas, NV, died Dec. 20, 2003 in Lynchburg.

She taught in elementary schools in Virginia and West Virginia for 38 years before retiring in 1998 to Cedar Bluff.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Jayne Turley Holfer.

Survivors: son, William Turley III and his wife, Margaret, of Forest.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is in charge of arrangements.

Luther D. Robinson

Luther Dale Robinson, 58, of Placentia, CA, formerly of Whitewood, died Dec. 15, 2003 at a Morristown, NJ, hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Luther Ellis and Evelyn Dorton Robinson, both Buchanan County natives.

He was a 1964 graduate of Whitewood High School and a graduate of Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, TN. He had made his home in the California area most of his life, was a computer analyst, and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earnest L. Robinson.

Survivors: special companion, Maria Pisciotta of Whippany, NJ; brothers, Kyle Robinson and wife, Edith, of Whitewood, Karl Robinson and wife, Jean, of Lexington, NC, Kendall Robinson and wife, Shirley, of Claypool Hill, Nathan Robinson and wife, Donna, of Cedar Bluff, Marcus Robinson and wife, Linda, of Winter Haven, FL; sister-in-law, Janice Robinson of Monroe; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Bill Shook officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Stella T. Shelton

Stella Thompson Shelton, 79, of Tazewell, went to be with her Lord Dec. 16, 2003 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born at Gratton, she was a daughter of the late Leck A. and Helen M. Thompson.

She was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church at Gratton. She was a former member of the Tazewell Civil Air Patrol and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was known as "Mama Tottie" by all the children she lovingly watched over. She enjoyed working in her garden, loved picking berries, and making those famous cobblers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Homer E. Shelton; grandson-in-law, Andy C. "Andy" Pearce; and four siblings.

Survivors: only daughter, Carolyn S. Kegley and husband, Larry, of Tazewell; granddaughters, Stephanie K. Neel and husband, SSG Thomas Wesley Neel, of Fort Bragg, NC, Heather K. Wimmer and husband, Ronnie Allen Wimmer, Jr. of North Tazewell; great-grandchildren, Trevor Drew Wimmer, Madison Hailey Wimmer and Bailey-Faye Neel; special grandson, Terry Wayne "T.J." Kegley of North Tazewell; sisters, Mary Sayers of Bluefield, VA, Roxie Blankenship of Dobson, NC, Cora Brown of Gratton, Faye Lambert and husband, Carl, of Thompson Valley; brothers, Ralph Thompson and wife, Nellie, of Gettysburg, PA, Richard Thompson of Tazewell, Fred Thompson of Thompson Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 19 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Rodney Lawson officiating.

Entombment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA.

Elsie Etta Sparks

Elsie Etta Sparks, 91, of the Dry Fork area of North Tazewell, died Dec. 19, 2003 at her home.

Born at Dry Fork, she was a daughter of the late James (J.W.) William Sparks and Florence Bell Witt Sparks.

She was a member the Salem Primitive Baptist Church at Dry Fork.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Elmo Sparks; two brothers, Avery Sparks and Herman Sparks; and two sisters, Ethel Salyers and Orlena Raines.

Survivors: son, Richard Yates and wife, Louise, of Dry Fork; sister, Arrie Sparks of Dry Fork; grandchildren, James Yates, Judy Mullins, Joyce Brown, Jackie Yates and Jerry Yates; great-grandchildren, Cody James Yates, Courtney Justus, Scott Justus, Brittany Justus, Michael Yates, Samantha Yates and Jalisa Robinson; several nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Bess Vandyke, Connie McFarland and Lynn Hicks.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Elder George Ben Combs and Elder Danny Smith officiating.

Burial followed at the Sparks Family cemetery in Dry Fork.

Troy Lane Sparks

Troy Lane Sparks, Sr., 49, of Richlands, died Dec. 18, 2003 at a Richlands hospital.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Ernest E. and Myrtle Lane Sparks, both Tazewell County natives.

He was a lifelong resident of the Cedar Bluff and Richlands areas and was a 1973 graduate of Richlands High School. He was previously employed with Rex Sparks Produce and Mining Machine Parts and at the time of his death was co-owner of Ket, Inc. at Oakwood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Carlos "Corky" Sparks.

Survivors: wife of 27 years, Peggy Ann Martin Sparks; son, Troy Lane "T.J." Sparks, Jr. of the home; sisters, Martha "Polly" Coleman and husband, J.R., of Tazewell, Teresa Hess and husband, Rusty, of Cedar Bluff; and brothers, Ernest Sparks, Jr. and wife, Jeanie, of Crane, TX, Clyde Sparks and Millie, Danny Sparks and wife, Connie, and Ricky Sparks and wife, Annette, all of Cedar Bluff, Lt. Col. Robert "Bobby" Sparks and wife, Donna, of Gate City, and twin brother, Roy Sparks and wife, Judy, of Doran.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Barry Absher officiating.

Interment followed in the Hankins cemetery in Richlands.

James R. Webb

James Robert Webb of Licking, MO, formerly of Raven, died Dec. 17, 2003 in a London, OH, hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Reece Henderson and Effie Griffith Webb, both Tazewell County natives.

He had spent most of his life in London, OH, and was a building contractor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Shannon Webb, Buford Webb and Avery "Jack" Webb; and two sisters, Georgia Christian and Ruby Boyd.

Survivors: daughter, Sherry; three sons, Jimmy, Dale and David Webb, all of London, OH; several grandchildren; sisters, Peggy Wells, and Beula and Glenn Rose, all of Richlands, Alice and Grady Owens of Swords Creek; brothers, Tom and Mildred Webb, of Roanoke, and Gratten and Jackie Webb of Raven; sisters-in-law, Edith Webb, Lucy Webb, and Maxine Webb; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The body was cremated in Columbus, OH.

Ruby Iline Breeding

Ruby Iline Jackson Breeding, 84, of Davenport, died Dec. 19, 2003 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1919 in Rowe, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ada Hess Jackson.

She had spent most of her life in the area and was a member of the Free Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Ruie Jackson, Ulysses Jackson, Marvin Jackson, Herbert Jackson and Jack Jackson; two sisters, Virginia Jackson and Phyllis Dotson; and one great-granddaughter, Krista Snead.

Survivors: husband of 64 years, Charlie Breeding; sons, Harold Dean Breeding and Charlie Breeding, Jr., both of the home, Eddie Breeding and wife, Edna Sue, of Lebanon; daughters, Joyce Mitchell and husband, Harold, of Council, Phyllis Statzer of Hansonville; sisters, Bernice Keene and husband, Arvil, of Dumfries, Pearl White of the Villages, FL; grandsons, Chris and Christine Presley and Preston and Crystal Breeding; granddaughters, Tenita Mitchell, Roberta and Kevin Willis, Tracy Clevinger and Shelley Breeding; great-grandsons, Lee Willis and Dustin Clevinger; great-granddaughters, Casey Snead, Sarah and Chris Outen, Krista Willis and Emma Clevinger; three step-great-grandchildren; great-great-grandson, Jaxon Outen; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Clyde Lambert officiating.

Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.

Mary E. Carner

Mary Elaine Carner, 88, of Richlands, died Dec. 21, 2003 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Martha Jane Alley Stranger, both Tazewell County natives.

She had made her home in the Richlands area all of her life and was a retired LPN from the Mattie Williams Hospital and the Clinch Valley Clinic. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Carner, and two brothers, William H. Stranger and Arver G. Stranger.

Survivors: daughters, Marie Morrison and husband, Carl, of Trenton, MI, Betty Dillow and husband, Jim, of Beach Grove, IN, Ellen Lowe of Middletown, Mary Young of Richlands; sons, Paul Thomas Carner of Tazewell, William Carner of Richlands; sister, Ann Bailiff of Cedar Bluff; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted Dec. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Bill Shook and Rev. Tom Stranger officiating.

Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Mark Cochran

Mark Cochran, 47, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, died Dec. 17, 2003 in a Salem veterans hospital following a long illness.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Violet Faye Rasnake Cochran and Barney Robert Cochran of Cedar Bluff.

He was a self-employed industrial battery service technician and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam era.

Additional survivors: wife, Thelma Brown Cochran; daughter Mrs. Brad (Rebecca) Taylor of Charleston, SC; sons, Robert Cochran and wife, Helen, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Dakota Cochran of the home; brother, Barry Cochran and wife, Juanita, of Myrtle Beach; sisters Una Kathleen Tolley of Myrtle Beach, Mrs. Gene (Joy) Kitts and Mrs. Ronnie (Kelly) Pennington, both of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. David (Jane) Hurd of Burkes Garden, Mrs. Ray (Jill) Morris of Graham, NC; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Gray Whitt of Vinton; cousin, Nadine Butterworth of Vinton; five grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Lee Blackburn officiating.

Burial followed in the Cochran Family cemetery at Baptist Valley.

Casey-Short V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell Co. Chapter 31 D.A.V. conducted military graveside rites.

French Coleman

French Coleman, 88, of Pounding Mill, formerly of Prater, died Dec. 16, 2003 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Stuart and Sarah Ellen Cannady Coleman, both Buchanan County natives.

He had made his home in the Prater area most of his life before moving to Pounding Mill. He was a retired miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7170 of Haysi. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maggie Desorda and Lillie May Owens; two brothers, David Coleman and Berkley Coleman, and two grandchildren, Leslie Ann Coleman and Jennifer Lynn Coleman.

Survivors: daughters, Ermaline Boyd and husband, Denny, of Davenport, Ada Sue Stacy and husband, Johnny, of Pounding Mill, Roma Jean Deel and husband, Willard, of Gans, OK, Effie Viers and husband, Brice, of Prater; sons, Kenneth D. Coleman and wife, Mitzi, of Prater, Lester W. Coleman and wife, Barbara, of Ferron, UT; sister, Rose Jones and husband, Sam, of Hamilton, NC; brothers, Lawrence Coleman of Woodville, OH, Bill Coleman of Floyd, Dayton Coleman of Prater, Trinkle Coleman of Fincastle; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Evangelist Bob Smith officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
