James (Jack) Davidson, Jr.

James Robert (Jack) Davidson, Jr., 80, of Tazewell, died Aug. 10, 2004 at his residence.

Born at Pisgah, he was the son of the late James Robert and Ruth Kinder Davidson.

He was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was later employed with Norfolk and Western Railroad with 28 years of service. He was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church at North Tazewell. He was also a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post 1736 of Tazewell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Harrison Davidson; one sister, Lucy Davidson Lawson; and two brothers, John Davidson and Allen Jefferson Davidson.

Survivors: brothers, Walter Davidson and wife, Jean, of Tazewell, Pierce Davidson and wife, Evelyn, of Baptist Valley, Roy Davidson and wife, Rosieta, of Princeton, WV, Gene Davidson and wife, June, of Gratton; sisters, Margaret Robinette and husband, John, of Pulaski, Cora Long and husband, Hughie, of Baptist Valley, Lena Amburgey of Thompson Valley; special sisters-in-law, Dana Roberts of Chattanooga, TN, Eva Fisher of Leesburg; and special friend, James Asbury.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell with Rev. Kenneth Gillespie and Rev. Max Linkous officiating.

Interment followed in Maplewood cemetery at Tazewell.

Casey-Short VFW 9640 of Richlands and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V. conducted military graveside rites.

Carrie E. Day

Carrie E. Vance Day, 93, of Rosedale, died Aug. 13, 2004 at Leemaster.

Born in Swords Creek, she had been a resident of the Harmon area most of her life before moving to Rosedale in 1977 and was of the Holiness faith. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, A.G. "Augustus" Day; parents, William Harley Vance and Victoria Gilbert Vance of Swords Creek; two sons, Walter Kyle and Glen Harley Day; two daughters, Shelia Terri Day and Mrs. Kermit, Jr., "Martha" Cartmell; five sisters, Myrtle Mutter, Ethel Herndon, Callie Pinion, Della Mays, Julie Mullins; and two brothers, Walter (Tony) and Ballard Vance. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughters, Patty R. Salyers and husband, Billy, of Bristol, TN, Nila Faye Coleman and husband, Ralph, of Leemaster; sons, James (Jim) E. Day, Sr., and wife, Shirley, of Paducah, KY, Billy R. Day and wife, Margaret, of Bristol, TN; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. T.R. Stump and Rev. Chad Justice.

Interment followed at the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Regina R. Honaker

Regina Renate Honaker, 52, of Honaker, died Aug. 14, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Aug. 20, 1952 in Berlin, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Worst Walter and Ilse Gurmann Drecke.

She came to the United States in 1972 and had made Russell County her home for the past 34 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Honaker.

Survivors: son, Mark David Honaker of Lodi, CA; daughter, Trish Marsha Honaker of Lebanon; brothers, Lutz Drecke and Axel Drecke, both of Germany; sisters, Barbara Sylvia, Ilona, Helga and Sabrine, all of Germany; and former husband, James Honaker of Richlands.

The funeral will be conducted Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Chris Musick officiating.

Interment will follow in Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery at Richlands.

Mary L. Hoops

Mary Lucille Hoops, 80, of Tazewell, formerly of Cedar Bluff, died Aug. 12, 2004 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Cedar Bluff, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Nell Burnett Williams.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, one sister, two brothers and son-in-law, Dennis Howery.

Survivors: husband, The Rev. Charles Hoops; son, Ben Hoops and wife, Joann, of Beckley, WV; daughter, Mary Lou Howery, of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Christina Jackson and husband, Earnest, of Belfast, Charlotte Barrett and husband, Allen, of Abingdon, Lois Ann Short of Richlands; brothers, Henry David Williams and wife, Margaret, of Jewell Ridge, Harry Dale Williams of Cleveland, OH; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m., Aug. 15 in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery Mausoleum at Richlands with The Rev. Max Linkous officiating.

Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Ricky Joe Horn

Ricky Joe Horn, 50, of Columbia, SC, formerly of the Mudfork community in Tazewell, died Aug. 8, 2004 in a South Carolina Hospital.

Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of Phyllis Mitchem Horn of Mudfork and the late Paul Horn.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Bluefield Moose Lodge.

Additional survivors: wife, Sue Horn; daughter, Jessica Glass of Bluefield, VA; step children, Jill Howell and Jason Howell, of Abbs Valley; sisters, Paulette McCroskey and husband, Daniel, and Sandy French and husband, Charlie, all of Abbs Valley; brothers, Reecle Horn and wife, Sharon, of Annapolis, MD, Jimmy Horn and wife, Brenda, and Johnny Horn and wife, Francine, all of Mudfork; and several nieces, nephews, special in-laws and dear friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Carlos Hess officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of VFW Post #9696 of Bluefield, VA, and American Legion Post #14 of Pocahontas.

James McCoy

James McCoy, 81, of Tazewell, died Aug. 11, 2004 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.

Born in Clearfield, PA, he was a son of the late Mac and Isabelle Williams McCoy.

He was a member of the Wilbur United Methodist Church of Tazewell. He served in the European Theatre with the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 32nd degree Mason. He retired from Consolidation Coal Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Diane McCoy and Rosevelt McCoy; and one brother, Mac McCoy.

Survivors: wife, Ruth Higginbotham McCoy; daughters, Beverly Ross of Altoona, PA, Terri McCoy of Wilmington, DE; step-daughter, Denise Congo of Wilmington; brother, John McCoy and wife, Alice, of New Jersey; sister, Hattie Morgan of Clearfield, PA; sister-in-law, Evelyn McCoy of Clearfield; grandchild, Blake McCoy; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Robert Brown and the Rev. Robert Buckles officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of VFW Post #9696 of Bluefield, VA, and American Legion Post #14 of Pocahontas.

Kathren M. Mitchell

Kathren Marie Mitchell, 75, of Lurray, formerly of Tazewell, died Aug. 15, 2004 at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Greever and Nannie Repass Kitts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Mitchell; two sisters, Nancy Gillespie and Frances (Poodle) Collins; and four brothers, Glen Kitts, Ted Kitts, Jerry Kitts and Harry Kitts.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Survivors: daughters, Barbara Adkins and husband, Ronald, of Lurray, Lisa Marckesano and husband, John, of Woodbridge; special daughter, Janice May of Golden Valley, AZ; sisters, Priscilla (Sibby) Dillow and Dorothy Nuckles, both of Tazewell; brothers, Bill Kitts of Wilmington, DE, Tim Kitts of New Castle, DE; grandchildren, Michael Anderson, Mitchell Adkins, Scott Wiseman, Corey Wiseman and Derek Wiseman; and countless other relatives.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA, with Dr. James H. Grant, Jr. officiating.

Those planning to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. Aug. 18.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the family c/o Barbara Adkins, 13 W. Old Barn Road, Lurray, VA 22835.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell is in charge of arrangements.

Alva Rutter

Alva Rutter, 68, of Raven, died Aug. 14, 2004 in Bristol Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late George and Rosie Belle Rutter, both Tazewell County natives.

He was a member of Calvary Temple of Richlands, and was a retired coal miner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, George William Rutter, and two sisters, Clearie Jane Rutter and Mary Katherine Rutter.

Survivors: wife, Lorraine B. Rutter; daughters, Donna Jean Rutter of the home, Beth Williams, of Burnsville, NC, Janet Lynn Griffith and husband, Roy, of Raven; sons, Freddie Lee Rutter, Bobbie Allen Rutter and James Dean Rutter, all of the home; and sister, Jennie Ball and husband, George, of Richlands.

The funeral will be held Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin and Rev. Doug Allen officiating.

Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Glen E. Smith

Glen Edward Smith, 67, of Shortts Gap, died Aug. 9, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Garland Garfield and Mary Martha Thomas Smith, both Tazewell County natives.

He had been a life long resident of Tazewell County. He was a retired coal miner and was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Roger Smith.

Survivors: loving wife, Helen Louise Mitchell Smith; daughters, Glenda Chaffins and husband, Donnie, of Salyersville, Sharon Hopkins and husband, Grant, and Donna Chaffins and husband, Gregory, all of Wardell, Sherri Smith of Richlands, Angela Parsons and husband, Billy, of New Market, TN; sisters, Alma Fay Turner of Oakvale, WV, Geraldine Boone and husband, Grant, of Warren, OH, Brenda Kay Christian and husband, Eddie, of Narrows, Rhonda Kay Laquatra and husband, Tony, and Deborah Cobble and husband, Ronnie, all of Cleveland, OH; brothers, Billy Lee Smith and wife, Jan, of Cedar Bluff, Donnie L. Smith and wife, Alma Jean, of Raven, Rev. Bobby Smith and wife, Geraldine, of Cedar Bluff, Jerry Smith and David Smith, both of Cleveland, OH; 13 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Jesse Whited and Rev Bobbie Smith officiating.

Interment followed at the Simmons Family cemetery on Red Root Ridge near Raven.

Virginia M. Wheeler

Virginia M. Wheeler, 86, of Tazewell, died Aug. 11, 2004 at Heritage Hall in Tazewell.

Born in Doran, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Mary Lambert Bailey.

She was a member of the North Tazewell United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie T. Wheeler; five sisters; four brothers; one great grandchild, Nikolas Ruble; and one great great grandchild, Austin Lee.

Survivors: daughters, Betty Angles and husband, Jack, Ellen Wheeler VanDyke, and Phyllis Davidson and husband, Ronald, all of Tazewell; sisters, Lela Corder and husband, Robert, of North Tazewell, Ellen Parker and husband, Pete, of Lynchburg, Nora Boardwine of Belhaven, NC; grandchildren, Jack Thomas Angles and wife, Angie, Barbara Ray and husband, Arvin, Andrea Ruble and husband, Derrick, Debbie Pickett and husband, Andy, Angie Smith and husband, Barry, and Jim Davidson and wife, Angie; great grandchildren, Amy Lee, Matthew Ray, Jillene Fox, Joy Angles, Meadow Brooke Ruble, Brandi Smith, Karrah Davidson, and Conner Davidson; great great grandchild, Bryce Fox; and special caregivers, Regina Glover, Frances Barnes, Gladys Hayes, Frank Jones, and Jerome Dennis.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Jared Wood and the Rev. Roy Lee Smith officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Agnes Blevins

Agnes Stella Gertrude Blevins, 91, of the Divides, North Tazewell, died July 27, 2004 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born at Seven Mile Ford, she was a daughter of the late Thomas V. Evans and Grace Lou Ellen Goodman Evans.

She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was former owner of the Hitch'n Post store located on the Divides.

Her and her husband had formerly resided in Superior for over 30 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Ephrim Blevins; six brothers, James Lester, Walter Lester, George Lester, Ernest Lester, Richard Lester and Carl Evans; and two sisters, Helen Budd and Arlene Harris.

Survivors: daughter, Phyllis Bailey and husband, Ben Tom III, of Divides; grandsons, Ben Tom Bailey IV of Washington D.C., Christopher Dale Bailey and wife, Trista, of Springville; sister, Lois Moreland and husband, David, of Seffner, FL; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted July 30 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Ray Amos officiating.

Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.
