John W. Gardner
John "Bill" William Gardner, 79, of Wilmoth Road, Stuart, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Ellicott City, Md., he served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He retired from the Singer Sewing Machine Co. after 35 years of service.
Gardner belonged to the Ellicott City and Freedom District Lions Club before transferring his membership to the Stuart Lions Club. During his 30 years as a Lions Club member, he held a number of official positions, including being a past president. He also was an active 4-H volunteer for 15 years, and was a member of the Church of The Risen Lord in Patrick Springs.
Surviving are his wife, Charlotte H. Gardner; three sons, Lawrence "Larry" Gardner of Stuart, David Gardner of Woolwine and Paul Gardner of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, James E. Gardner of Ellicott City; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of The Risen Lord in Patrick Springs with Father Charles Beckner officiating. military rites will follow by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Howell Funeral Home, Stuart, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.
Memorials may be made to the Patrick County Dialysis Center, the Bill Gardner Memorial Fund, c/o Smith River Bank of Stuart.
Howell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel M. Garrett
The graveside service for Hazel Louise Morris Garrett, 86, formerly of 34 High St., Fieldale, who died Feb. 5, 2003, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Roselawn Burial Park. Minister Lawrence Harris will officiate.
Visitation will be held at Norris Funeral Services from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and at other times at the home of her daughter, Caren Hubbard, 254 Forest Hill Drive, Collinsville.
Born Feb. 14, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Ira Morris and the late Martha Ann Mahon Morris. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Lee Garrett; four sisters, Hester Hundley, Lelia Wilson, Annie Hundley and Mamie Sawyers; and four brothers, Henry Morris, Leonard Morris, Ed Morris and Robert L. Morris.
A retired employee of Fieldcrest Mills, Garrett was an active member of Fieldale Baptist Church for many years, where she also was a member of the Joyful Singers.
Surviving in addition to her daughter, Caren G. Hubbard of Collinsville, are her son, Marvin L. Garrett of Orange; one sister, Evelyn Dunn of Eden, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, Va. 24015.

Brooks R. Leavitt
The funeral for Brooks Russell Leavitt, 79, of 1012 Sheraton Court, Martinsville, who died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, was held Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Randall Stevens officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Harrison S. Toms, Paul B. Toms Jr., Robert L. Brown, B.D. Beeler, W. Christopher Beeler, A.C. Wilson, James D. Coleman, Henry Grady Moore III, David McCollum, Vance Jones, Sam Fowler, Dr. William D. Lewis, Dr. Donald W. Richman and Richard M. Simmons.
Arrangements were by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Nettie F. Phillips
Nettie "Virginia" Fields Phillips, 75, of Bassett, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born on Aug. 26, 1927, in Wythe County, the daughter of the late James Fields and the late Elizabeth Ayers Fields. Her husband, Vernon "V.C." Phillips, died Oct. 12, 2000. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie Phillips in 1982 and Ricky Phillips in 1995.
Her survivors are one daughter, Joyce Phillips of the home; two sons, Mike Phillips of Bassett and Tim Phillips of Atlanta; one granddaughter; and three sisters, Frances Thompson and Virgie Graham, both of Martinsville, and Katherine Walker of Ridgeway.
Visitation will be held at Bassett Funeral Service from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday. Following visitation, the funeral will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Ray Fields and Harold Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Henry Memorial Park.

Elva D. Taylor
The funeral for Elva A. Dalton Taylor, 82, of 303 Dye Plant Road, Martinsville, who died Feb. 3, 2003, was held Thursday at Community Funeral Services, Ridgeway. The Revs. J.R. Shelton and David Cochran officiated. Burial was in Mayo Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roger Moore, James Moore, Jeff Miller, William Smith, Allan Moore, Garry Haley Sr., Garry Haley Jr. and Ronnie Miller.

Nannie P. Vaughn
A funeral for Nannie P. Vaughn, 85, of Stuart, who died Feb. 2, 2003, was held Wednesday at Stella Christian Church with Ministers Steve Hayes and Thomas Joyce Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Stella Christian Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Buddy Pendleton, Bobby Pendleton, Mike Cooper, Dustin Cooper and Johnny Pendleton.
Howell Funeral Home, Stuart, was in charge of arrangements.

Trudy F. Baker
The funeral for Trudy Bell France Baker, 90, of 2905 Spencer-Preston Road, Martinsville, who died April 10, 2003, was held Tuesday at Mt. Olive East Christian Church with the Rev. Kenneth Davis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clyde Turner, Ernest Kellam, Governor Reid, James Moore, Jesse Turner and Joe Louis Hairston.
Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Lee Griffin
Curtis Lee Griffin, 85, of Bassett, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Collins Funeral Services, Bassett.

Earnest Lassiter
Earnest Lassiter, 85, of 1810 Spruce St., Royal Oakes Townhouses, Martinsville, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Surviving is his wife, Nancy Stratton Lassiter.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

Magdalene H. Lieteau
Magdalene Hairston Lieteau, 71, of 716 Fourth St., Martinsville, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Services.

Roy D. Massey
The funeral for Roy David Massey, 68, of Ridgeway, who died April 12, 2003, was held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home, Stuart, with the Rev. J.R. Shelton officiating. Burial was in the Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Junior Treadway, Joey Massey, Clyde Sutphin, Troy Murphy Jr., Vance M. Yearout and Tommy Massey.
