McClellan W. Horne

McClellan Willard Horne, 69, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, died July 1, 2005 at a Bristol, TN, hospital.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mae Webb Horne, both Buchanan County natives.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Baptist Valley Assembly of God Church. He was a retired miner with Pittston Coal Company and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union #1760 of Seaboard.

Survivors: wife, Evelyn Horne; son, Randy Horne and wife, Peggy, of Baptist Valley; brother, Leondis Horn of Jewell Ridge; grandchildren, Amy Queen and husband, Kelly, of Abingdon, and Joseph Horne; and great grandchildren, Gray McClellan Queen and Addy-Lane Queen.

The funeral was conducted July 3 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Joe Horne officiating.

Interment followed in the Brown Mountain Family cemetery on Brown Mountain near Jewell Ridge.

Harry (Cotton) Jackson

Harry (Cotton) Jackson, 74, of the College Estates section of Cedar Bluff, died July 3, 2005 at his home following a long illness.

Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Garnett and Ocie Blankenship Jackson.

He was a retired coal miner with Pittston Coal Co. and a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 8254 Jewell Ridge. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Homer, Robert, Grover, Stonewall and Henry Jackson; two sisters, Ruth Louise Hale and Frances Carol Bloodworth; and two grandchildren, Heather Jackson and Jamie Houchins.

Survivors: wife, Fannie Marie Morgan Jackson; daughters, Nancy Carol Houchins and husband, Andy, of Cedar Bluff, Ruth Jane Jackson and Terry Robinett of Doran; sons, Kenneth Edward Jackson of Richlands, David Keith Jackson and wife, Wilma, of Jewell Ridge, Gregory Allen Jackson of Cedar Bluff; sister, Alice Gillespie and husband, Butch, of Richlands; brothers, Woodrow (Woodie) Jackson and wife, Pauline, of Thomasville, NC, Bill Jackson of Jewell Ridge; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; six step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; and special friends, Maggie Reynolds Lowe and Pete Crawford.

The funeral will be conducted July 6 at 2 p.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Brothers Aldie Allen and Robert Dye and Mr. Andy Houchins officiating.

Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Kenneth “Ken” Jackson

Kenneth E. “Ken” Jackson, 45, of Princeton, died June 28, 2005 at his residence.

Born Sept. 5, 1959 in Princeton, he was the son of the late Donald Lee and Peggy Paitsel Jackson.

He was a former salesman for Chambers Automotive and was a member of the First Christian Church in Princeton.

Survivors: wife, Leona Altizer Jackson; daughter, Bradie Jackson of Princeton; and sisters, Victoria Lee Crockett and husband, Charles, and Pamela Denise Jackson, all of Roanoke.

Graveside services were conducted July 5 at 2 p.m. at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with Rev. Gary Lyons officiating.

Burial followed.

Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton was in charge of arrangements.

Marie H. Johnson

Marie H. Johnson, 84, of Blacksburg, formerly of Bishop, died July 1, 2005 at the Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg.

Born Feb. 7, 1921 in Keokee, she was a daughter of the late Amos and Nanny Belle Creech Herron.

She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church and a member of the Kimball, WV Chapter of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Henry Johnson; one brother, Odell Herron; and one grandson, Monte Heldreth. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother.

Survivors: son, John Johnson and wife, Barbara, of Beckley, WV; daughters, Jerry Osborne and husband, Jack, of Radford, Carolyn Heldreth and husband, Todd, of Manning, SC, Sandy Weber and husband, Mike, of Blacksburg, Ricki Crabtree and husband, Jack, of Richmond; sisters, Thelma Smith of Beckley, Ginny Peters of Santa Barbara, CA; grandchildren, Kelly Shelton, Todd Heldreth, Jr., Jud Heldreth, Johnny Osborne, Jamie Little, Steven Osborne, Jeff Noakes, Jill Doty, Aaron Weber, Keith Crabtree, Stephanne O’Connell, Robbin Durham, John Johnson, III, and Michael Johnson; 33 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.

The funeral was conducted July 5 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Ted Anders officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Nannie P. Johnston

Nannie Patrick Johnston, 78, of RR 2, Bluefield, VA, passed to a better life June 22, 2005 following a brief illness at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Born Jan. 12, 1927 in Tazewell, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Rosa Collins Patrick.

She attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker who loved making beautiful quilts for her family and friends. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and reading. Her grandchildren were the light of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Henry Patrick, and one sister, Bessie Fox.

Survivors: husband, of 57 years, Frank M. Johnston; daughters, Suzie Webb and Rosa Austin of Bluefield, VA, Frankie Brewster and husband, Roy, of Troy; brother, Joe Patrick of Sebring, FL; sister, Ruth Smith of Princeton, WV; grandchildren, Robbie Webb and wife, Chris, and Angela Austin, all Bluefield, VA, Wendy Olinger and husband, Paul, of High Point, NC, Trey and Cody Brewster of Troy; and great-grandchildren, Clay and Sam Webb, Zach Bailey and Nathan Olinger.

The funeral was conducted June 25 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Raymond Amos officiating.

She was laid to rest at the Grandview Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to UVA Health Systems Palliative Care, P.O. Box 801454, Charlottesville, VA 22908. This division of UVA Health System allowed her to pass on in the manner she chose, surrounded by her immediate family.

John Douglas “Jack” Kidd

John Douglas “Jack” Kidd departed this earth June 25, 2005. At the time of his death, he was living in Richmond and recently had lived in Harrisonburg. He was born in Bluefield Jan. 12, 1961, lived in Richlands for a time, attended schools in Bluefield, VA and graduated from Graham High School.

He was a graduate of Bluefield State College where he was a charter member of PHI ETA SIGMA National Honor Society, serving as president for two years. He was also inducted into ALPHA CHI National Honor Society.

He attended Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, VA.

He had worked at Leggett, Acme Markets and Turner Vision while in Bluefield. He was employed by Office Max, Staples and Kohl’s Department Store in Harrisonburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Giles Newman Kidd and Margaret Ruth Stafford Kidd.

Survivors: brothers, Donald Eugene Kidd (Diana) of Harrisonburg, William Stafford Kidd (Sue) of Wytheville, Albert Lee Kidd (Vonda) of St. Paul, Kenneth Alan Kidd of New York, NY. Laura Dotson was his special friend the last years of his life. Also special to him was Susan Kidd of Harrisonburg. Nephew and nieces surviving, Donald Kidd, Jr., Dawn Keim (Anthony), Katie Kidd, Laura Powell (Waid), and Leah McCall (Thomas); and great nieces, Kate and Sadie Keim and Madeline McCall.

The funeral was conducted June 28 at 2 p.m. at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Hugh Cole officiating.

Interment followed at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens on the Bluefield-Princeton Road.

Those who wish may make donations to the charity of their choice.

Beulah Bea Looney

Beulah Bea Ratliff Looney, 84, of the Slate Creek section of Grundy, died June 28, 2005 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Fuller and Bessie Smith Ratliff.

She was a member of the Grundy Baptist Church and a retired Substitute School teacher for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Barnes Robert Looney, and four half-brothers, Charlie Ratliff, Pierce Ratliff, Amos Horn and Frank Horn.

Survivors: daughter, Mrs. Bill (Carol) Keene of Grundy; son, Kent Looney of Grundy; grandchildren, Tammy Keene, Margo Keene, William Keene and Shane Keene; half-sister, Elizabeth Dobson of Grundy; and half-brother, Charles Horn of Rosedale.

The funeral was conducted June 30 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stan Parris officiating.

Entombment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery at Richlands.

A service was held at the funeral home June 29 at 7 p.m.

Lyndell Michael “Tail” McGlothlin

Lyndell Michael “Tail” McGlothlin, 47, of Rosedale, died June 30, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Dec. 29, 1957 in Richlands, he was a son of Kermit and Lorane Roman McGlothlin of Honaker.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1976 graduate of Honaker High School. He was employed as an engineer with Norfolk & Southern Railroad for over 19 years. He attended Bethany Baptist Church of Honaker.

Additional survivors: wife, Lisa Holbrook McGlothlin; sons, Marshall Seth McGlothlin and Joshua Lake McGlothlin, both of the home; sister, Karnita McGlothlin of Johnson City, TN; brother, Steve McGlothlin and wife, Janet, of Lebanon; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Holbrook of Castlewood; and nieces and nephew, Rocky, Sheena and Amy.

The funeral was conducted July 2 at 7 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Vonley Pruitt and Rev. Howard Reynolds officiating.

Graveside services were conducted July 3 at 11 a.m. at the Tunnel Hill cemetery in Honaker, where interment followed.

Rosie G. Miller

Rosie Gaynell Miller, 58, of the Pine Creek section of Swords Creek, died June 29, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Dec. 17, 1946 in Russell County, she was a daughter of Delora Byrd Richardson of Swords Creek and the late Murvin Robinette. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Wayne Byrd, and her step-father, Charlie Elmer Richardson.

Additional survivors: daughters, Teresa Richardson of Swords Creek, Regina Stinson of Honaker, Kimberly Justice and husband, Wayne, of Page; sons, Tommy Richardson, Eugene Miller, and Barry Miller, all of Sword Creek; brothers, Ronnie Richardson of Georgia, Ricky Richardson of Swords Creek; special friends, Geraldine Sykes and Darrell Perkins; six grandsons; four granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and one step-grandson.

The funeral was conducted July 3 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Dennis White and Rev. Carl Robinson officiating.

Interment followed in the Byrd cemetery at Swords Creek.

William Henry Perry, Jr.

William Henry Perry, Jr., also known as “Little Bill”, 84, of Richlands, died July 3, 2005 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late William H. and Ella Arizona Taylor Perry, both Tazewell County natives.

He was a Veteran of World War II having fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a retired employee of Joe Lowe’s Esso Station and Homer Alley’s Gulf Service Station in Richlands and Cedar Bluff. He was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 Richlands. He had made his home in Richlands all of his life. He was a loving husband and father.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gordon Perry; one grandson, Matthew Perry; four sisters, Myrtle Farley, Mae Bandy, Monte Woods and Mel Serber; and three brothers, Roby, Garland and Bandy Perry.

Survivors: wife of 56 years, Betty Jo Simmons Perry; daughters, Rhonda Perry of Oakwood, Cynthia Gwaltney and husband, Bruce, of Lady Smith; sons, John S. Perry of Martinsburg, WV, Danny C. Perry and wife, Ana, of Shepherdstown, WV, Dennis C. Perry of Richlands; sister, Kathleen Colston of Tazewell; grandchildren, Amanda Gwaltney, Benjamin Gwaltney, Steve Hamro III, Chance Hamro, Daniel Perry, Leif Perry and Devin Perry; and great-grandchildren, Braun Perry, Brandon Brooks, Brooke Brooks, Bailey Brooks and Alexander Matthew Perry.

The funeral was conducted July 5 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. David Brannock officiating.

Interment followed in Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites.

Randall Wayne Pruett

Randall Wayne Pruett, 49, of Dickson, TN, formerly of Bishop, died June 28, 2005 at his home.

Born Aug. 22, 1955 at Bishop, he was a son of the late Lance Shandos Pruett and Gladys Louise Ramsey Pruett.

He was a US Navy veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Brenda Orlene Gore, and one brother, Ronald Lance Pruett.

Survivors: wife, Sonja C. Pruett of Bluefield, VA; daughters, Tonya De Gallery and husband, Brett, of Spotsylvania, Heather White and husband, Lennie, of Tazewell, Danielle Pruett and Lauren Pruett, both of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Norma Scammell and husband, Frank, of Bishop, Joyce Ann Pruett of Butler, NY; grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob and Daniel DeGallery, Kendra and Kerry White, Tylee Pruett, and Keira Pruett; and step grandchildren, Connal White and Amanda White.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell is in charge of the arrangements.
