Zeak Cain

Zeak Cain, 81, of Richmond, formerly of Tazewell, died Nov. 7, 2005 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends. Born Dec. 20, 1923 in Derby, he was a son of the late Walter E. Cain and Helen Dills Cain.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Coast Guard and was a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell. He was a maintenance supervisor with H.C. Cockrell Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Peery Cain; one sister, Juanita Robinson; five brothers, Harry, Ernest, Clarence, Carson, and Junior Cain.

Survivors: wife, Evelyn Cain; daughters, Beverly Cain Atkinson and husband, Jim, Mary Cain Childress and husband, Johnny, and Melissa Cain Dotson, all of Chester; step son, Billy Yates and wife, Sandra, of Gwynn’s Island; sisters-in-law, Wanda Evans and husband, Jim, and Macie McAlexander and husband, Ralph; brothers-in-law, Paul Peery and wife, Wanda, Marshall Peery and wife, Alma, and Jim Peery and wife, Lois; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and special friend, Margaret Pemberton.

The funeral will be conducted Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Michael Stump officiating.

Burial will follow at the Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell, where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Arch Cox

Arch Cox, of Lebanon, 90, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 7, 2005.

Born May 27, 1915, he was a son of the late John Cox and the late Sarah Fletcher Cox.

He was employed at the Russell County Court House from 1962 until 1997. He was a member of the East Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church and he loved to sing with the Mountain Memory Quartet for 50 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ed Cox; one grandson, Christopher Musick; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors: wife of 41 years, Loraine Strouth Dye Cox; his first wife, Eula Gay Cox, of Cedar Bluff; children, Helen and Joe Cole and Ruth Ann Dye, all of Bristol, Roy and Sue Dye and Howard and Tiny Dye, all of Lebanon, Junior Dye, of Fredricksburg; daughter-in-law, Willie Mae Cox, of Cedar Bluff; brother, John Henry Cox, of Lebanon; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

The funeral will be conducted Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Larry Robinson and the Rev. Roger Phillips officiating.

Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens.

Gertie V. Davis

Gertie Victoria Osborne Davis, 79, of Tazewell, died Oct. 31, 2005 in a Tazewell hospital.

Born July 27, 1926 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late James Lewis and Rosa Louise Osborne.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Davis, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: daughter, Madie Arnold and husband, James H., of Cliffield; son, Jimmy Davis of Roanoke; step daughter, Hattie Davis of Richlands; brothers, Curley Osborne of Valdese, NC, Burley Osborne of Chilhowie; grandsons, Steven Davis, Roger Davis and Christopher Arnold; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Ralph Horton officiating.

Graveside services were conducted Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Osborne Family cemetery at Osborne Mountain.

Eva Mae Dickens

Eva Mae Dickens, 75, of North Tazewell, died Oct. 29, 2005 at her home.

Born July 21, 1930 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Elmore and Georgia Campbell Thompson.

She was a member of Midway Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, in Tazewell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Annlaura Thompson, and one brother, Elmore Thompson, Jr.

Survivors: sisters, Ruth Smith, Alice Smith and husband, Beverly, and Ruth Mitchell, all of Tazewell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Browning officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Troy Clinton Hagy

Troy Clinton Hagy, 71, went to be with the Lord Nov. 1, 2005 at the Wake Forest Baptist Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 4, 1934, he was one of twin boys born to Walter C. and Mae Lowe Hagy.

Loved and adored by all that knew him, he was a resident of Tazewell, where he resided with his wife of 47 years, Pearl Mae Sarver Hagy. During his amazing life here on earth he served the United States Army and dedicated his life work to the Forestry Industry. He will ever be remembered by his family and friends as an avid sportsman, outdoor enthusiast, blue grass music fan, and a true inspiration to his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Walter C. and Mae Lowe Hagy; stepmother Fannie Hagy; two sisters, Lola Vance and Rita Hagy; three brothers, his twin Roy, Luther and Roger Hagy, and one infant son, Greg Hagy.

Survivors: wife, Pearl Mae Sarver Hagy; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Hagy and wife, Carol, of Bland, Anthony Hagy and wife, Lisa, of Tazewell; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam Richardson and husband, Howard “Buddy”, Robin Boothe and husband, Joe, and Sherry Stone, all of Tazewell. He has the ten best grandchildren in his eyes that he loved and adored as well as they do him. Amy and husband, Colin Boley, Leisa and husband, Anthony Richmond, Clinton Hagy and fiancée, Jenny Lambert, Kristin Richardson, Cody Gillespie, Courtnie, and Caitlin Hagy, Samantha and Josh Boothe, and Ashley Stone. There are four very special great grandchildren, Noah Richardson-Boley, Casidhe Boley, Christian Richmond, and Gracie Richmond. Honorary grandchildren that he loved as much as his own, Mandy, Ira, and Lakey Felty; Ronnie and Amanda Massie. Brothers, Rob Hagy and wife, Fern, of Doran, Raymond Hagy and wife, Mary Ann, of Bastian, Junior Hagy of Rocky Gap; sisters, Betty Morehead and husband, David, of Rocky Gap, Shirley Clemons and husband, Roger, of Rocky Gap, and Josie Angles of Brenton, WV.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 4 at noon at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Barry Absher officiating.

Interment followed at Bland cemetery in Bland.

William H. Hicks

William H. Hicks, 57, of State Farm, formerly of Amonate, died Oct. 30, 2005 in State Farm, following a brief illness.

Born in Virginia, he was the son of the late John Harrison and Myrtle White Hicks, both Tazewell County natives.

He had made his home in the Amonate area most of his life and was a former coal miner for W. A. Mining in Gary, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, David Lee Hicks and Jimmy Hicks.

Survivors: wife, Carol Horn Hicks; daughters, Myrtle Horn, Tina Kelly and Jessica Harmon, all of Yukon, WV; sons, William Lester of Dry Fork, John Hicks of Amonate; step son, Joe Hankins of Amonate; sisters, Lucille Richards of Lexington, NC, Mary Jane Lowe of Bishop, Rosalie Atwell of Berwind, WV, Juanita Payne of Baptist Valley, Lorene Hagerman of Adria, Brenda Gray of South Carolina; brothers, Darrell Hicks of Lexington, NC, Frankie Hicks of Amonate, Johnny Hicks of Benson, NC; nine grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at his home in Amonate with the Rev. Melvin Muncy officiating.

Interment followed at the Hicks Family cemetery near Bandy.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur “Zeke” Hollett

Arthur W. C. “Zeke” Hollett, 66, of Tazewell, died Nov. 4, 2005 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born at St. John’s, Newfoundland, he was a son of William Hollett of St. John’s Newfoundland and the late Catherine Hogan Hollett.

He had made his home in Alexandria for most of his life. He was a butcher for McGruder’s. He was a member of the American Legion Post 24, Eagles Club in Alexandria and was a veteran of the U. S. Army.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Lee Day Hollett, and one sister, Jean Anthony.

Survivors: father and step-mother, William Hollett and Lily of St. John’s, Newfoundland; daughter, Kristina Hollett of Germantown, MD; sisters, Harlean Gudgeon of Tazewell, Joy Barrett of Labrador, Newfoundland; brothers, Bob Hollett of Goulds, Newfoundland, David Hollett of Happy Valley, Labrador, Newfoundland; grandchildren, Christopher and David; special caring niece, Cathy Simmons, and numerous other nieces and nephews; and special friend and brother-in-law, Ray Day.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Robert Buckles officiating.

Interment followed at Day-Lambert cemetery at Pea Patch.

David W. Holmes

Donald W. Holmes, 42, of Raven, died Nov. 3, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Oct. 5, 1963 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of Preston and Nancy Louise Arnold Holmes of Paintlick.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Washington Holmes and Jack Keen, and his grandmother, Helen Keen.

Additional survivors: wife, Shirley Ann Holmes; brothers, David Wayne Holmes and wife, Tammy, of Brunswick, OH, Ronald Preston Holmes and wife, Amanda Sue, of Paintlick; sister, Loretta Lynn Holmes of Brunswick; niece, Mya Renee Holmes of Paintlick; nephews, Andrew Holmes and Cody Holmes of Brunswick; paternal grandmother, Beatrice Holmes of Paintlick; and maternal grandmother, Teresa Keen of Jewell Ridge.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Bobby Stanley and Mr. Ervin Justus officiating.

Burial was private.

John Earl Hubbard

John Earl Hubbard, 35, of Honaker, died Oct. 20, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born May 10, 1970 in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of Mary Bise Hubbard of Meadowview and the late Buford Hubbard.

Additional survivors: wife, Carol Justice Hubbard; daughter, Donna Justice of North Carolina; sons, John Michael Hubbard of Virginia, Kenneth Wayne Hubbard of North Carolina; sisters, Melissa Hubbard of Honaker, Nancy Price of Graham, NC, Betty Hubbard of Bristol, VA; and brother, James Hubbard of Meadowview.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Clyde Rose officiating.

Interment followed in the Frank Smith cemetery on Big A Mountain.

Katherine H. Kersey

Katherine H. Kersey, of Bluefield, VA, died Oct. 28, 2005 at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Theresa Hofstetter and was a graduate of Concord College.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank N. Kersey, Sr., four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors: son, Frank Kersey, Jr. and wife, Connie, of Bluefield, VA; daughters, Martha Kersey Jessee and husband, Steve, of Richlands, Kathy Kersey Feuchtenberger and husband, Greg, of Christiansburg; grandchildren, David Jessee, Matthew Jessee and Kate Feuchtenberger; brother, Carl Hofstetter of Newnan, GA; and niece, Doris Ann Spangler Walton of Newnan.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Ray Amos officiating.

Entombment followed in the Grandview Mausoleum Chapel on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road in Bluefield, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Bluefield Virginia Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 170, Bluefield, VA 24605.

Elizabeth (Betty) Kyle Barnett Phillips

Elizabeth (Betty) Kyle Barnett Phillips, 77, of Okeechobee, FL, died Oct. 31, 2005 in a Tampa, FL hospital following a brief illness.

Born April 30, 1928 in Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Flora Barnett of Jewell Ridge.

She had made her home in Florida for more than 40 years.

She graduated from Richlands High School and earned her Registered Nursing certification from St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV. She was employed at Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital in Richlands for several years before serving her country as a Second Lt. in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors: husband, Everett C. Phillips; sons, Patrick Phillips and wife, Amy, of Laughlin, NV, Steve Phillips and wife, Maritza, of Tampa; brother, Samuel Walter Barnett and wife, Hula, of Cedar Bluff; and grandchildren, Samantha and Benjamin Phillips of Tampa.

The funeral was held in Tampa.
