Claude Newberry

Claude Newberry, 84, of the Mill Creek section of Raven, died Feb. 27, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 30, 1921 in Raven, he was the son of the late Arthur and Celia Griffith Newberry.

He was a member of UMWA Local Union 6196 and attended the Horton Ridge Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sons, Ronald Newberry, Darrell Newberry and David Newberry; two granddaughters, Sheri Ray and Shelia Newberry; two sons-in-law, Tivious Horn and Paul (Junior) Ray; three brothers, Sherman Newberry, Donald Newberry and Arthur Newberry, Jr.; and four sisters, Alice Newberry, Beatrice Cantrell, Marie Hubbard and Bernice Mason.

Survivors: wife of 65 years, Thelma Arms Newberry; son, Dallas Newberry and wife, Diane, of Winona, MN; daughters, Claudine Horn of Travelers Rest, SC, Betty Lawson and husband, Willard, and Brenda Ray, all of Raven; brother, Ivan Newberry of Bluefield, WV; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and neighbors.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Mar. 2 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Dennis White officiating.

Burial followed in the Newberry Family cemetery at Horton Ridge.

Liddie "Jennie" Puckett

Liddie Virginia "Jennie" Puckett, 73, of Honaker, died Mar. 6, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Aug. 10, 1932 in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Florence Earls Thompson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by eight sisters and one brother.

Survivors: husband of 49 years, Bill Puckett; sons, Cecil Thompson and wife, Clara, of Doran, Carl Thompson of Honaker; granddaughters, Carla Thompson, Kayla Thompson, Cynthia Shelton, Kimberly Hale, Michelle Shelton, Cecilia Thompson and Joni Hale; four great grandsons; two great granddaughters; sisters, Lola Stevenson and Lucy Thompson, both of Springville, Sue Brown of Tazewell; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Mar. 8 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Roger Lester officiating.

Burial will follow in the Thompson cemetery at Springville.

Joseph Millard Scyphers

Joseph Millard Scyphers, 81, of North Tazewell, died Mar. 2, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Seaboard, he was the son of the late Henry Clay and Mary Sparks Scyphers.

He was a lifetime resident of Tazewell County, and had lived in North Tazewell for the past 21 years. He had served his country by joining the Navy and serving in Pearl Harbor. He returned home to work in the coal mines for Hawley Coal Mining Corporation and retired and was a member of the United Miners Workers. He was enjoying his retirement by indulging in his favorite hobby of fishing and by spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Billings and Naomi Church, and one brother James Scyphers.

Loving survivors: devoted wife of 61 years, Lillie Mae Scyphers; daughters, Naomi Baker and husband, Estil, of Asheboro, NC, Carol Rowe of Sophia, NC, Brenda Roberts and husband, Dale, of North Tazewell, Debra Caldwell of Camden, SC, Donna Adams and husband, Kenny, of Thomasville, NC; sons, Tommy J. Scyphers and wife, Donna, of Mansfield, OH, James Scyphers and wife, Legrthel, of Lerona, WV; sisters, Eula Maye of Wharncliffe, WV, Lucille Workman and husband, Sammy, of Pounding Mill; brother, Roy Scyphers and wife, Nell, of Bristol, VA; half brother, Clayton Webb of Brenton, WV; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Mar. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Roy Lee Smith, Rev. Lawrence Hayes and Don Waddell officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Jane Ellis Sexton

Jane Ellis Sexton, 63, of North Tazewell, went to be with the Lord and Savior Mar. 5, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Apr. 3, 1942 in Smyth County, she was a daughter of Josephine Ellis of Chilhowie and the late Graham F. Ellis.

She was a member of the former Baptist Valley Church of God in Baptist Valley, which exists today as the Living Waters Church of God.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jeffery Ellis.

Additional survivors: husband of 46 years, Hubert T. Sexton; sons, Richard G. Sexton and wife, Jane, of Dry Fork, Mark D. Sexton of Thompson Valley; daughters, Susie J. Sayers of Tazewell, Rose M. McDaniel and husband, Gregory, of Rippon, WV, Lisa M. Price and husband, Michael, of Bishop; ten brothers; five sisters; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Mar. 8 at the Living Waters Church of God in Baptist Valley with the Rev. Howard Riley officiating.

Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Clayton Shelton

Harold Clayton Shelton, 83, of Bel Air, MD, died at Harford Memorial Hospital Feb. 26, 2006.

Born in Red Ash, he was the son the late George Washington and Cara Mae Vance Shelton and was the husband, of 32 years, of the late Jettie Marie Shelton.

He was retired from Price Brothers where he was a maintenance mechanic. He was very fond of his pet dog, Jacob, a rottweiler mastiff breed. He enjoyed gardening and loved his animals.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Frazier Shelton, and three sisters, Oma Hagy, Gene Blanton, and Arcie Riley.

Survivors: daughters, Donna Lephew and husband, Francis Lephew, Jr., of Edgewood, MD, Jackie Osborne and husband, Charles Osborne, of Aberdeen, MD, Cheryl A. German and husband, Tim German, of Jarrettsville, MD, Lena Shelton who along with her daughter, Samantha Shelton, lived with her father, of Bel Air, Diane Redman and husband, John Redman of Bel Air; step daughter, Rhonda Johnson and husband, Marc Johnson, of Edgewood; sister, Betty Cole of Richlands; grandchildren, Gene Lephew, Kristy Redman, and John Redman, all of Edgewood, Chuck Osborne of Aberdeen, T.J. German and Brent German, both of Jarrettsville, Samantha Shelton, of Bel Air; and great grandchild, Tyler Redman of Edgewood.

Services were held at McComas Funeral Home, P.A., Abingdon Mar. 3 at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran cemetery, Aberdeen at a later date.

Glenna Taylor Tolliver

Glenna Taylor Tolliver, 62, wife of Paul Arlin Tolliver, went to be with our Lord Mar. 5, 2006.

A native of Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of John Robert and Georgia Whitt Taylor.

She worked as a VISTA volunteer for a couple of years, and moved to Boydton in 1994 from Bahama, NC.

She was pre-deceased by two brothers and one sister.

Additional survivors: daughters, Pamela Flewwellin of Wake Forest, NC, Pamela Sharpe and Jennifer Kaywood, both of Buffalo Junction; sons, Paul Arlin Tolliver, III of Haw River, NC, Patrick Alan Tolliver of Mebane, NC, Paul Arlin Tolliver, IV of Boydton; eight grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn Conway of Sykesville, MD; Lorraine Cole of Abingdon, Iris Sampson of South Carolina, Penny Beyer of Roanoke, Gail Street of Timberlake, NC, Martha Queen of Ft. Pierce, FL; and brother, Joel Taylor of Jewell Ridge.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Mar. 8 in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville with the Reverend Richard Grendahl officiating.

Burial will be in the Baptist cemetery in Boydton.

Sam Junior Vanover

Sam Junior Vanover, 71, of North Tazewell, formerly of Newhall, WV, went to be with his Lord Mar. 1, 2006.

Born Feb. 3, 1935 in Shelby Gap, KY, he was a son of the late Will and Aloria Baker Vanover.

He was a retired mechanic for Olga Coal and was a member of the UMWA Local #6026 of Coalwood, WV. He was very active at the Pentecostal House of Prayer where he loved to sing and play guitar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Mary Vanover Lyons, Rob Vanover, Margie Vanover, and Alvin Vanover.

Survivors: his devoted wife of 51 one years, Lois Hale Vanover; sons, Sam Vanover, Jr. and wife, Kathy Coffey Vanover, and William Alex Vanover and wife, Dianne Welch Vanover, all of Gastonia, NC; daughter, Shirley Darlene Vanover Stevenson Ray and husband, Marion, of North Tazewell; brother, Leroy Vanover and wife, Muriel, of North Tazewell; sisters, Joyce Sizemore and husband, Mike, of Belfast, Ruby Brewster and husband, Jerry, of Lincolnton, NC; several grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many step grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Mar. 4 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Chris Vanover of Calvary Chapel in Princeton, WV officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Clayton Dwaine Whittaker

Clayton Dwaine Whittaker, 48, of Gate City, formerly of Richlands, died Feb. 27, 2006 at his home.

Born Nov. 7, 1957 in Richlands, he was a son of the late Elmer J. Whittaker and Margaret Jean Jackson Whittaker.

He was a US Navy Veteran and former member of the US Army Reserves. He was a paint contractor for John Myers Painting Contractors in Kingsport, TN.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Lee Whittaker.

Survivors: step daughter, Alisha of Flat Rock, NC; sister, Linda Gail Lowman and husband, Frankie, of Tazewell; brother, David Wayne Whittaker and wife, Joette, of London, KY; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Mar. 3 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Bobby Laney officiating.

Burial followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

David L. Williford

David L. Williford, 70, of Kure Beach, NC, died Feb. 23, 2006 in a hospital in Wilmington, NC.

He was a graduate of Richlands High School and King College.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty McEwen Williford of Bristol, TN, and his parents, Rev. Archie B. and Rosa Phipps Williford. His father was a former pastor of the Richlands Presbyterian Church.

Survivors: son, Michael Williford of Moneta; daughters, Leisa Moses of Flower Mound, TX, Julie Carter of Chantilly; nine grandchildren; sister, Helen Outlaw of Bristol, VA; brothers, Joe Williford of Richmond, Charles Williford of Burlington, NC, Archie M. Williford of Gardnerville, NV and Graham Williford of Shalimar, FL.

A service will be held at Arlington National cemetery Mar. 8 at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established at King College, 1350 King College Rd., Bristol, TN 37620.

Garland Billips

Garland Billips, 65, of the Mudfork area of Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 26, 2006 at the home of his sister, Beulah Bryant, in Bluefield, WV.

Born Mar. 20, 1940 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Augustus Billips and Mary Belle Bostic Billips.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Jane McBride, and two brothers, Marvin "Red" Billips and Douglas M. "Mac" Billips.

Survivors: daughter, Brenda Earp of Springville; sons, James Billips and David Billips, both of Asheboro, NC; sister, Beulah B. Bryant of Bluefield, WV; brothers, Samuel A. Billips of Springville, Walter J. Billips of North Tazewell; and grandchildren, Ian Billips, Mary Billips, Courtney Billips, and Jannie Billips.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Mar. 1 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Johnny Elmore officiating.

Burial will follow at the Billips Family cemetery at Mudfork.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Mar. 1.

Sadie Rose Hankins

Sadie Rose Hankins, 87, of the Baptist Valley community of North Tazewell, died Feb. 21, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1918 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Ruth Patrick Williams.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garnett "Shag" Hankins; one son, John Hankins; two grandchildren, Deanna Hankins and Susie Hankins; seven sisters; and one brother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughters, Janice Baldwin and husband, John, of Dry Fork, Rose Griffitts and husband, George, and Mary Whitt and husband, Steve, all of Baptist Valley, Lucille Griffitts and husband, Joe, of Georgia, Margaret Bowman and husband, Larry, of Squire, WV, Sue Young and husband, Rufus, of North Tazewell; sons, Leon Hankins and wife, Gaye, and Harold Hankins and wife, Geraldine, all of Baptist Valley, Raymond Hankins and wife, Linda, of Richmond; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
