Junior Kirk Crouse

Junior Kirk Crouse, 82, of Tazewell, formerly of the Dix Creek community of Tazewell County, died Jan. 26, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.

Born Mar. 3, 1923 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Thomas Richard Crouse and Patty Asbury Crouse.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a member of Barns-Beavers V.F.W. Post #7136 of Tazewell. He retired from Consolidation Coal Company and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local #1559. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and helping build houses.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Norah Christian and Florence Lavendar, and five brothers, Gus, Grover, Pete, Lindsey (Slick) and Jack Crouse.

Survivors: wife, Juanita Atwell Crouse; daughter, Audria Leffel and husband, Jerry, of Tazewell; son, Douglas Kirk Crouse and wife, Sandra, of Tazewell; sisters, Grace Mack of Newark, DE, Blanche Crisp of Dade City, FL, Eura Pruett of Pounding Mill; and brother, Jess Crouse of the Dix Creek community of Tazewell County.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenneth Fields officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

Dominick Lee Deskins

Dominick Lee Deskins, 5-month-old son, of Jody Allen Deskins and Crystal Lynn Crabtree Deskins of Cleveland, died Jan. 27, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

He was born Aug. 22, 2005 in Johnson City, TN.

Additional survivors: sister, Star Dawn Deskins; maternal grandfather, A.F. Crabtree of Cleveland; maternal grandmother, JoAnn Lindsey of Lebanon; paternal grandparents, Jay Deskins, Jr. and Linda Deskins of Belfast; maternal great-grandmother, Lucy Rasnake of Bee; paternal great-grandparents, James P. and Helen Sisk of Raven; godmother, Terry Harris of Cleveland; special aunt, Myrtle Jefferson; and special cousin, Lorie Dobble.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Cecil Musick officiating.

Interment followed in the Crabtree cemetery at Cleveland.

Nellie Jane Endicott

Nellie Jane Endicott, 87, of Raven, died Jan. 27, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Born May 18, 1918 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Maudie Jane Honaker Keen.

She was of the Holiness faith. She was a life long resident of Buchanan County. She was a homemaker and loved to quilt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Montiville Endicott; four sons, Arville Endicott, Roger L. Endicott, Ronnie B. Endicott and Montiville Endicott, Jr.; six brothers; and three sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation.

Survivors: daughters, Maudie Endicott of Knoxville, TN, Bonnie Meadows and husband, Donald, of Mountain Grove, Naomi Janice Lester and husband, Jerry, of Thompson Valley; sons, Freddie Endicott and wife, Doris, of Oakwood, Lonnie Endicott and wife, Lea, of Pounding Mill, Benny Endicott and wife, Arbedella, of Wardell, Delford Endicott and wife, Shirley, of Oakwood; daughters-in-law, Janet Endicott Collins of Pilgrim Knob, Nikki Endicott of Knoxville, TN; very special friend, Margaret Endicott; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Jack Ward, Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Steve Lester officiating.

Burial followed in the Esaw Rife cemetery at Keen Mountain.

A service was held Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mae Aileen Hanshew

Mae Aileen Hanshew, 80, of Tazewell, died Jan. 26, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born April 5, 1925 at Burkes Garden, she was a daughter of the late Henry "H.M." Mullins Hanshew and Garnett Frances Wilson Hanshew.

She was a member of Mary’s Presbyterian Church in Gratton, where she played the piano for many of the church services. She was a former purchasing supervisor for Pyott-Boone Electronics Inc.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lettie Hanshew Felty.

Survivors: son, Phil Hanshew and wife, Laura, of Pounding Mill; aunt, Pansy Blackwell of Tazewell; special cousins, Brenda Lane and husband, Emory, and family of North Tazewell, and Buddy and Helen Wilson of Wytheville.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Danny Whitt, the Rev. Carlos Hess, and the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating.

Burial followed at Concord cemetery in Gratton.

Thomas Brown (Tommy) Hawkins

Thomas Brown (Tommy) Hawkins, 70, of Belfast, died Jan. 24, 2006 at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late William T. and Eileen Brown Hawkins, both Russell County natives.

He had made his home in the Belfast area for the last 38 years and was a retired employee of Eastern Isles Corporation in Richlands. He was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1953 and a graduate of Bluefield College and attended Concord College.

He was a member of Cedar Bluff Lodge #260 AF & AM and the Richlands Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 104. He was a member of the Kazim Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies of Roanoke. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.

Survivor: wife, Lois White Hawkins.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Brad Scott officiating.

Interment followed at the White Family cemetery in Belfast.

Masonic services were held at the funeral home Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

Flossie Mae Hurt

Flossie Mae Hurt, 74, of Raven, died Jan. 26, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Roby Glen and Margie Alice Keen Dye, both Tazewell County natives.

She had made her home in the Raven area all of her life and was of the Holiness Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Dennis Hurt; one daughter, Millie Hurt; one grandchild, Bradley Hess; one sister, Ivory Horn; and two brothers, Willard and James Dye.

Survivors: daughters, Germaine Vandyke and Zeda Blanton and husband, Mikem, all of Raven, Brenda Hess and husband, Danny, of Swords Creek; sons, Alvin Hurt and wife, Edna, and Willard Hurt, all of Raven; sisters, Mabeline Dye of Raven, Judy Compton of Cleveland, OH; brothers, Junior Dye of Richlands, Danny Dye of Raven, Frank Dye of South Carolina; ten grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Bibleway Church in Raven with the Rev. Dannie Short officiating.

Interment followed at Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Stanford Kirby

Helen Stanford Kirby, 67, of Baptist Valley, formerly of Baltimore, MD, died Jan. 24, 2006 in a Tazewell hospital.

Born April 1, 1938 in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Alta Robinson Stanford.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Stanford.

Survivors: daughter, Wanda McClenny of Texas; sister, Dorothy Horn of Baptist Valley; brothers, Robert Stanford and wife, Carol, of Claypool Hill, Rick Stanford of Baptist Valley, Dean Stanford and wife, Betty, of Ohio, Bill Stanford and wife, Bennie, of Montana; grandson, Dustin McClenny of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Troy Lester officiating.

Burial followed in the Stanford cemetery at Compton Mountain.

Rufus B. "Joe Boy"

McBride, Jr.

Rufus B. "Joe Boy" McBride, Jr., 68, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 26, 2006 at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.

Born June 10, 1937 at Mudfork, he was a son of the late Rufus B. McBride, Sr. and Sallie Wright McBride.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lee Thompson McBride; one sister, Nancy Jackson; four brothers-in-law, Billy Thompson, Jake Bradley, Clarence Jackson, and Joe Ed Jackson; and father and mother-in-law, Herb and Annie Thompson.

Survivors: daughter, Linda Childress and husband, Tim, of Bristol, VA; sisters, Mary Jackson of Bluefield, VA, Elizabeth Bradley, Ella Marrs and husband, Ed, all of North Tazewell, Mamie Lou Caudill and husband, Dean, of Mars, PA; brothers, Ralph McBride and wife, Evelyn, of Valencia, PA, Clarence McBride and wife, Jo, of North Tazewell; and grandsons, Matthew Childress and Daniel Childress.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Audrey K. Price

Audrey Kathleen Price, 79, of Honaker, died Jan. 25, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Sept. 14, 1926 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Lambert and Virgie Mae Crabtree Harris.

She had spent most of her life in the area and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Price; her step-father, Harmon Harris; one son, Richard Price; one brother, Douglas Harris; and one half-sister, Goldie Baldwin.

Survivors: daughters, Linda Raevsky and husband, George, of Spotsylvania, Judy Schneider and husband, Herb, of Robbinsville, NJ, Audrey Pauline Hart and husband, Gary, and Lena Dye and husband, Terry, all of Honaker; sons, Gary Price and wife, Jean, of Council, Billy Price and wife, Joyce, and James Price, all of Honaker; sisters, Dorothy Duty of Cedar Bluff, Jewell Densmore of Honaker, Norma Jean Vance of Rosedale, Sue Gloriso of Baltimore, MD, Patsy Herring of Charlotte, NC, Sylvia Sue Tiller of East Bend, NC; brothers, Dallas Harris of Honaker, Don Harris of Lebanon, Dennis Harris of Germantown, MD, Danny Harris of Honaker, Maynard Lambert of Hansonville; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one foster great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Stephen Musick officiating.

Interment followed in the Dye cemetery at Finney.

Edgar Stevens

Edgar Stevens, 91, of Tannersville, died Jan. 27, 2006 at his home.

Born Aug. 11, 1914 in Russell County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Annie Rasnake Stevens.

He was a veteran in the United States Army, having served in World War II, where he was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He was of the Baptist faith and had worked most of his life as a farmer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Stevens; his step-mother, Margaret Compton Stevens; one son, Thomas Robert Stevens; one brother, Donald Stevens; one sister, Mona Crabtree; one step-sister, Effie Jessee; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors: sons, Albert Stevens and wife, Jean, of Council, James Stevens and wife, Dorothy, of Tazewell, Allen Stevens of Tannersville; daughters, Ruth Ball of Cleveland, Alice Musick and husband, Randolph, of Tazewell, Ann Crabtree and husband, Douglas, Barbara White and Bonnie White, all of Meadowview, Jean Somervell and husband, Fred, of Saltville, Nellie Musick and husband, Kermit, of Marion; sisters, Dorothy Osborne, Mary Ann Crabtree, and Carnell Rasnake, all of Cleveland, Viola Crabtree of Lebanon, Ethel Powers of Manassas, Nadine Houser of Bristol, VA; brothers, Claude Stevens of Elkton, MD, Ned Stevens of Honaker; 50 grandchildren; 87 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.

Military graveside honors were conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.

Ronald Joe Stiltner

Ronald Joe Stiltner, 51, of Honaker, died Jan. 23, 2006.

Born Jan. 5, 1955 in Grundy, he was a son of the late Edgar Joseph and Cretty VanDyke Stiltner.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner.

Survivors: daughter, Ronda Joan Rose of Bristol, VA; son, Ronald Joe Stiltner, Jr. of Bandy; brothers, Gary Stiltner of Drill, Lonzo Stiltner of Matoaka, WV, and Oscar Stiltner of Honaker; granddaughter, Brandi Rose of Garden Creek; special friend, Nancy Honaker of Honaker; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Michael Justice officiating.

Reba Mae Vandyke

Reba Mae Keen Vandyke, 81, of Rt. 1, Raven, left this world for her heavenly home Jan. 26, 2006.

Born Aug. 9, 1924 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late G.C. and Hannah (Honaker) Keen of Keen Mountain.

She was a well loved member of the Keen Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a homemaker with a passion for family and friends and loved all animals.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Gus D. Vandyke; one special grandson, Dr. Jonathan Rasnake; one brother, Hufford Keen; and four sisters, Virgie Keen, Tinia Matney, Mona Buttermore and Vinia Boyd.

Survivors: daughter, Freda S. Rasnake and husband, Randall, of Richlands; sister, Virginia Rife of Pounding Mill; and special caregiver, niece, Ellen K. Simmons.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Jack Keene and Rev. Randy Webb officiating.

Burial followed in the Esaw Rife cemetery at Keen Mountain.

A service was held Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Keen Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church, PO Box 679, Keen Mountain, VA 24624.
