Lois Geneva Lambert

Lois Geneva Lambert, 67, of Honaker, died Jan. 17, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Mar. 27, 1938 in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Pearlie Jane Newberry Wells.

She had spent her early life in the Honaker area and moved back to the area in 1971. She attended the First Baptist Church of Honaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one infant son, Fredrick Keith Corns; five brothers, Jessee Wells, Frazier Wells, John Wells, Claude Wells, and Robert Wells; and three sisters, Marie Corns, Deloria Elkins and Clercy Wells.

Survivors: husband of 33 years, Douglas Lambert; daughters, Bonnie Sue Leonard and husband, Bob, of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Patricia Ann Price of Akron, OH, Christine Steele and husband, Billy, of Honaker, Vickie Davis and husband, Gary, of Cedar Bluff; sons, Terry Dean Corns and wife, Donna, and Donald Lambert, all of Honaker, Dwight Lambert and Douglas Wesley Lambert, Jr. of Harrisonburg; sisters, Anna Pearl Miller and Ruby Brown, both of Honaker; brothers, Danny Wells of Pine Creek, Estle Wells of Houston, TX, Kyle Wells of Midwest City, OK; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Chris Musick and Rev. Jacob Musick officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Amanda D. Lawson

Amanda D. Lawson, 94, of Tazewell, formerly of Bluefield, VA, left this world in the arms of the angels to join her heavenly father for eternal rest Jan. 21, 2006 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County Aug. 27, 1911, she was the daughter of the late William T. and Mary Letitia Alley Green.

She was a long time member of the Baptist Valley Assembly of God in Baptist Valley. She will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Wade Lawson; one daughter, Alice Lawson Witt, and son-in-law, Reece Witt, Jr.; one son, Jim Lawson; five brothers, Roy Green, Bill Green, Dewey Green, Warner Green and Floyd Green; four sisters, Annie Elizabeth Lawson, Ella Hash, Margaret Boothe and Eva Yost; and one niece that she had raised, Mary Alicie.

Survivors: son, Don Lawson of Owosso, MI; daughter-in-law, Jerri Lawson of Owosso; sisters, Louise Johnston of Winston-Salem, NC, Rachel Akers of Verona; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Libby) Kimberlin and husband, Darrell, of Tazewell, Anita Kinder and husband, David, of Tazewell, Andrea Brewster and husband, David, of Cedar Bluff, Brad (Buddy) Alicie of High Point, NC; and a very close family member, Bobby Alicie of Cedar Bluff.

The funeral will be conducted Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Max Linkous and Rev. Don Blankenship officiating.

Internment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

James Mitchell, Jr.

James Mitchell, Jr., 79, of the Smith Ridge section of Jewell Ridge, died Jan. 18, 2006 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James Milton and Barbara Ethel Vandyke Mitchell, both Tazewell County natives.

He was a retired coal miner for Grassy Branch Coal Company at Jewell Ridge and a member of Local #1594 of the United Mine Workers of America at Jewell Valley. He was a faithful member and Sunday School Superintendent for 20 years of the Jewell Ridge Church of God. He was a lifelong resident of the area.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Stella Caudill, Nina Meadows and Thelma Brown, and three brothers, Garfield, Harland and Paul Mitchell

Survivors: wife of 56 years, Trula Alvernie Mitchell of Jewell Ridge; sons, Jerry Mitchell and wife, Peggy, of Radford, Bruce Mitchell and wife, Linda, and Stanley Mitchell and wife, Lisa, all of Jewell Ridge, Randall Mitchell and wife, Phyllis, of Cedar Bluff, Joseph Mitchell and wife, Mary Ann, of Gloucester, Mark Mitchell and wife, Brenda, of Honaker; sisters, Hazel Mitchell of Jewell Ridge, Omie Musick of Cedar Bluff, Gaynell Nelson of Richlands; brother, Elbert Mitchell of Jewell Ridge; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Clinton Dales and Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.

Interment followed in the Christian-Mitchell cemetery at Smith Ridge near Jewell Ridge.

Mable L. Plaster

Mable L. Plaster, 66, of Shreve, OH, formerly of Raven, died Jan. 17, 2006 at her home.

Born Jan. 17, 1940 in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Charlie F. and Elizabeth (Moore) Goodman.

She worked for Diamonite for 22 years retiring in 1999. She was a member of the Shreve Calvary Baptist Church, past member of the Killbuck Valley Radio Club, Ripley Garden Club, a member of the Wayne County REACT and Wooster Mustang CB Club. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed gardening and making candy and canning.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Hugh, Calvin, Lloyd, Dan and Ray Goodman, and three sisters, Evelyn Belcher, Mae Goodman and Louise Stevens.

Survivors: husband, Garnet Plaster, and sisters, Gladys Robinett of Abingdon, Mary Ellen Pruitt of Doran, and Georgia Cordle of Huntsville, OH.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. H.G. Musick and Rev. Phillip Cook officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of local arrangements.

Betty Jean Ratliff

Betty Jean Owens Ratliff, 68, of the Leemaster area of Rt. 2, Vansant, died Jan. 17, 2006 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Rosie Ellen Runyon Owens.

She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Big Fox Community Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by one son and three sisters.

Survivors: husband, Hurley Ralph Ratliff; daughters, Barbara and husband, Junior Crouse, of Grundy, Linda and husband, Kermit, Jr., Duty, of Rt. 5, Grundy, Sondra and husband, Jeff Sparks, of Stuart, Renee and husband, Doug Wysor, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Lyle Owens of Vansant, Plina Deel and Gerleine Deel, both of Haysi, Kelsie Compton of Marion, Molly Owens of Honaker; brothers, John Owens of Clinchco, Rufus Owens of Clintwood, Roy Childress of Rt. 1, Vansant, Jessie Owens of Lebanon; and six grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Roy Lee Wilson, Chris Ratliff, Denver Barton and Evg. Michael Trent officiating.

Burial followed in the Ratliff Family cemetery on Big Fox Creek near Vansant.

Services were held at the funeral home Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

Peggy Ann Earls Sayers

Peggy Ann Earls Sayers, 74, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, joined her husband, family members and the Lord on Jan. 16, 2006 at her home following an illness of several months.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She was born in Finney and was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Sylvia A. Sutherland Earls.

She had made her home in the Cliffield area all of her life and was a lifetime member of the Cliffield Christian Church where she was a very faithful and loving servant to our Lord and Jesus Christ and to the community.

She was a volunteer at the Alzheimer’s Respite and also volunteered at Tazewell Community Hospital. She was a former member of the North Tazewell Lioness Club and former member of the Tazewell County Democratic Party and also worked as a volunteer at voting polls.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ancil B. Sayers; one brother, Dudley Earls; one granddaughter, Nettie Elizabeth Sayers; and one sister-in-law, Erma Earls.

Survivors: daughters, Brenda Sayers, Linda McGraw and husband, Steve, Tina Keen and husband, Kevin, and Stephanie Jewell and husband, Calvin, all of Cedar Bluff; sons, Ancil Sayers, Jr. and wife, Regina, of Cedar Bluff, Stevie Sayers and wife, Faith, of Yulee, FL; sisters, Virginia Carner and husband, Bob, of Cliffield, Mary White and husband, Gene, and Nancy Colley and husband, Ray, all of Bluefield, VA; brothers, Kenneth Earls of Cliffield, Tommy Earls and wife, Jean, of Azle, TX, Joe Earls, Jr. and wife, Faye, of Roanoke; grandchildren, Thomas McGraw and wife, Shannon, Brandon Keen, Ashley Keen, Courtney Harrison, Hannah Harrison, McKinzey Sayers, and Alisa Burbo and husband, Jose; great grandson, Hunter Wayne Hess; great granddaughters, Isobel and Eva Burbo; and special caregiver, Hazel Hones.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Mike Harrison and Rev. Brian Richardson officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Preferred Hospice of Richlands.

Wanda Faye Shelton

Wanda Faye Shelton, 60, of Richlands, died Jan. 16, 2006 at her home.

Born Feb. 22, 1945 in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Bertha Ward Sims.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert Jeffrey Cox; one daughter, Melissa Cox; and two sisters, Sally McGuire and Lorene McGlothlin.

Survivors: husband, William D. Shelton of Cedar Bluff; daughter, Cynthia Cox of Honaker; brothers, James Sims and John Sims, both of Belfast; sisters, Madeline Reynolds of Belfast, Virginia Berlian of California, Lillie Reed of Ohio; grandchildren, Jeffrey Frazier, Kayla Frazier and Amber Hobson; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. James Sims officiating.

Ellis Shortridge

Ellis Shortridge, 79, of Doran, died Jan. 17, 2006 in a Salem hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1926 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late John and Ollie Harman Shortridge.

He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He was a retired coal miner with Red Jacket Coal Company. He was a member of UMWA and John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred Matney; one son, Rodney Shortridge; one brother, John Shortridge; two sisters, Georgie Keen and Alice Shortridge; two grandsons, Michael Street and Steven Matney; and two great grandsons, Brandon (Little Brandon) Shortridge and Mikie Dupree.

Survivors: wife of 60 years, Alma Juanita Shortridge; sons, Jerry Shortridge and wife, Sharon, of Chilhowie, John Shortridge and wife, Debbie, of Pounding Mill, Paul Shortridge and wife, Deloris, of Claypool Hill; daughters, Brenda Street of Doran, Linda Rife of Pilgrim Knob, Maretta Taylor of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Junior Shortridge and Harold Shortridge, both of Castlewood, Chester Shortridge of Richlands; sisters, Shirley Compton of Delaware, Nellie Hall of Meadowview, Trula Shortt of Harrisonburg, Dorothy Hale of South Carolina; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Clinton Dales, Rev. Darrell Sutherland and Rev. Charlie McGlothlin officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Military graveside rites were conducted by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.

Nona B. Smith

Nona B. Smith, 84, formerly of 124 North Highland Ave. and a Fairview Manor resident for the past three years died Jan. 16, 2006 at Heartland of Bucyrus.

She was born in Van Dky, VA, July 15, 1921 and was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Nora (Davis) Stillwell.

On May 26, 1938 she married Roscoe W. Smith and he preceded her in death July 31, 1979.

She moved to the area in 1954 from Virginia, worked for Strubles and the former Heckert Brothers grocery store and was a devoted mom and mawmaw.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Vernie Walters, two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors: daughter, Pauline and husband, Michael Moran, of Bucyrus; son, Rich and wife, Peggy Smith, of Howell, MI; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother, Jay Stillwell of Richlands; sister, Ruby Ball of Raven; brothers-in-law, Roger Smith and Audrey Smith and wife, Lucy, all of Bucyrus; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Stillwell of Oceola.

The funeral was held Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home with Pastor Rich Rader officiating.

Burial was at Crawford County Memory Gardens, Crestline.

Elster Kermit Stiltner

Elster Kermit Stiltner, 77, of the Poplar Creek section of Grundy, died Jan. 23, 2006 at the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Jessie and Ella Belcher Stiltner.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church #2. He was a former employee of Harman Mining Company for 44 years and was a member of Local Union No. 7025. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Flornie Bowman Stiltner, Aug, 27, 1984, one grandchild, three brothers, five sisters and one son-in-law, Bobby McClanahan.

Survivors: wife, Lillian Street Stiltner of Rt. 2 Grundy; daughters, Thelma Ruth and husband, Johnny Fuller, of Haysi, Linda Jane McClanahan of Grundy; sons, Cecil and wife, Pamela Stiltner, of Vansant, Michael and wife, Nellie Stiltner, of Grundy, Terry and wife, Beth Stiltner, of Pounding Mill, Gary and wife, Penny Stiltner, of Claypool Hill; sister, Betty Faye Deel of Grundy; seven step children; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Toy Looney, Mark Justice, Roger Coleman and Howard Daniels officiating.

Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.

Paul M. Wilburn

Paul M. Wilburn, 93, of Tazewell, died Jan. 20, 2006 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

Born Feb. 28, 1912 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late W.R and Bertie Peery Wilburn.

He was a retired police officer for the Town of Tazewell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, David Wilburn, Harold Wilburn, and Melvin Wilburn.

Survivors: long time companion, Loretta Mullins; his children, Margaret Pendry of Tazewell, Robert Wilburn and wife, Donna, and Donald Wilburn and wife, Elizabeth, all of Chesterfield, Debbie Whitt and husband, Robert, of North Tazewell; five grandsons; eleven great grandchildren; and brother, Rex Wilburn of Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 23 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Chris White officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
