Juanita McGlothlin

Juanita McGlothlin, 67, of the Vansant area of Grundy, died Dec. 30, 2005 at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Pearl Dales McGlothlin.

She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and worked as a former butcher for Wrights Market, IGA Food Haven, and Price Enterprises.

She was a graduate of Grundy High School.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Survivors: sisters, Effie Looney of Floyd, Nell Branham of Richlands, Etta Justice of Big Rock, Edith Deel of Altavista; and brothers, Edd McGlothlin of Vermilion, OH, Jessie McGlothlin of Kingsport, TN, Frank McGlothlin of Grundy, and Wallace Horn of Hopewell.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 3, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Raymond Lester, Paul O’Quinn, and Johnny Cooper officiating.

Burial followed in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.

Services were held at the funeral home Jan. 2, 2006 at 7 p.m.

Kellie Jo Allen Miller

Kellie Jo Allen Miller, 47, of Kill Devil Hills, NC and formerly of Bluefield, VA, died Dec. 15, 2005 in Nags Head, NC following an automobile accident.

Born in Bluefield, she was the daughter of Annette Sword Allen Caldwell of Bluefield, VA and the late Rodney Delano Allen.

She was a graduate of Graham High School, College of Albemarle and the University of Missouri. She was working as a bookkeeper in North Carolina.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Carl K. Caldwell; stepbrother, Carl K. Caldwell, Jr.; grandparents, Clarence and Della Sword and Glen and Ina Allen; and one uncle, Danny Sword.

Additional survivors: husband, Edward Lee Miller; sister, Kimberly Allen of Los Gatos, CA; stepsister, Darlene Brown of Beckley, WV; aunts, Betty Snell and husband, Frankie, of Bluefield, VA, Linda Ellison and husband, Don, of Springville, and Elsie Sword of North Carolina; great uncle, Mearl Lester and wife, Lillian; and cousins, May Edmonds, Sidney Tillie and Monica Carlyle.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 22, 2005 at the Grandview Mausoleum Chapel.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Clifford R. Necessary

Clifford Russell Necessary, 75, of Tazewell, died Dec. 28, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.

Born April 10, 1930 at Tannersville, he was the son of the late Paul Raymond Necessary and Verlie Cloteel Necessary.

He attended Tannersville Elementary School and graduated from Rich Valley High School, in Rich Valley, in 1948. Clifford (Jerry to his friends), joined the Air Force in Sept. of 1948 and served for four years during the Korean Conflict as an airplane mechanic. After his discharge, he began working construction jobs, which included building bridges on the West Virginia Turnpike.

He attended Emory and Henry College in Emory for three years and then transferred to Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he graduated in 1963 with a BS in Building Construction. After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, he and his wife, June, moved to Richmond and began working for Virginia Electric Power Company. He and his family moved to Tazewell in 1967, when he accepted the position as the Town Manager of Tazewell, a position he held until 1976. He then worked for Island Creek Coal Company as Supervisor of Maintenance and Construction, until he retired in 1991. He also worked a couple of years, part time, for the same company.

He began shooting bow and arrow as a child when his grandfather made him a bow and he began shooting more seriously while attending Emory and Henry College. He was VA State Champion of the bare bow in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1965; Virginia State Freestyle Champion 1967; Mid Atlantic Champion 1964 and 1965; National Bare Bow Archery Champion 1964, 1965 and 1966. The 1964 National Field Archery Association, Men's National Championship, which he won, produced a 513-487 Field, 517-512 Hunter and 508 Animal for an aggregate score of 2,537. This broke all existing NFAA Championship Tournament records held by instinctive archers.

He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Tazewell Lions Club, Rich Valley Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Retreads Motorcycle Club, and the NRA.

Survivors: wife of 43 years, June Neal Necessary; son, Russell Ray Necessary and wife, Anne Brewster Necessary, and their children Mollie and Kameron Necessary, and Trevor Taylor of Tazewell; son, Andrew Neal Necessary, and wife, Kelly Combs Necessary, and their children, Spenser, Carter, Conner, and Parker Necessary of Tazewell; son, Terence Kirk Necessary and wife, Joyce Sparks Necessary, of Tannersville, and Kirk's step children, Karen Cole McCall, and husband, Joe McCall, and their children Brittany Allen and Joey McCall of Richlands, and Shannon Cole Johnson, and husband, Larry Johnson, and their children, Kayla and Lindsey Johnson; and sister, Pauline Faye Necessary of Tannersville.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 31, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.

Burial followed at the Necessary cemetery in Tannersville, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

Mac A. Phipps

Mac A. Phipps, 81, died Dec. 31, 2005, at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol.

He was born in Bristol to the late Joseph Mac and Margaret Isabella Phipps.

He was retired from the U.S. Navy and served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and the Bay of Pigs. He served aboard aircraft carriers including, the USS Boxer, USS Independence and the USS Hornet, and as a navel flight navigator. Interrupting his 20-year naval career, he graduated from Emory and Henry College where he was a member of the basketball team. He taught and coached basketball at Appalachia High School. He was a 23-year employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia retiring as manager of the Virginia Employment Commissions in Richlands.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Malcum Phipps; three brothers, Howard "Bud" Phipps of Bristol, TN, Joseph Conley Phipps of Medford, OR, Worley E. "Steve" Phipps of Columbia, SC; and one sister, Helen Phipps Smith of Elizabethton, TN.

Survivors: nephews, Mike Phipps of Bristol, TN, Dick Smith of Elizabethton; niece Toni Phipps Pittman of Cordova, TN; and a number of special friends.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry, 106 Veterans Drive, Richlands, VA 24641.

Oakley-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory of Bristol, TN is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Mae Presley

Alice Mae Presley, 96, of Bluefield, VA, went to be with her Lord Dec. 7, 2005 at Eastview Adult Care in Bluefield, VA, after a short illness.

Born July 13, 1909 in Switchback, she was a daughter of the late John Cameron Baldwin and Lena Gertrude Warf Baldwin.

She was retired after being a teacher for 35 years at Graham High School. The Graham High Class reunions she attended over the many years since retiring were a great delight to her. She was a member of the Graham Christian Church and a past member of the Eastern Star.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Charles Presley, Jr., two sisters and one brother.

Survivors: sons, William Cameron (Bill) Presley and wife, Fran, of Bristol, TN, Gordon Conrad (Bud) Presley and wife, Chlor, of Centennial, CO, Charles Edward (Ed) Presley and wife, Bani, of Bluefield VA; daughter, Alice Ann Dalton and husband, Clyde, of Danville; ten grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 11, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Rev. Bob Johnson officiating.

Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made to the Graham Christian Church Joash Fund, 1101 Va. Ave., Bluefield, VA 24605.

Emma (Poochie) Rigney

Emma Jean (Poochie) Rigney, 59, of Bluefield, VA, died Dec. 16, 2005 at her home.

Born in Abbs Valley, she was the daughter of Willie Mae Harmon Dillon of Bluefield, VA and the late Lawrence Dillon. She was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ronald Rigney.

Additional survivors: fiancé, Paul Money of Bluefield, VA; daughters, Ronda Rigney Saunders and husband, Ronnie, of Christiansburg, Sandy Proctor and husband, Jerry, of Winston Salem, NC; and grandson, Ryan Saunders of Christiansburg.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Rev. Kathy Cregger officiating.

Burial followed at the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Ballard Preston Sexton

Ballard Preston Sexton, 79, of Tazewell, formerly of Pulaski, died Dec. 29, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.

Born Jan. 15, 1926 at Narrows, he was a son of Sidney and Rose Ward Sexton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gary Sexton, who died Nov. 26, 2004; one brother, Andy T. Sexton; one sister, Thelma Robertson; and one great grandson.

Survivors: son, Jackie Sexton of Pulaski; daughters, Judy King and husband, Jonathan, of Waynesboro, Carolyn Carner and husband, Barry, of Austinville; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

A memorial service held was Jan. 2, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Newbern Church of God in Newbern with Pastor Jonathan King officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Harrison Sykes

Hattie Harrison Sykes, 89, of Tazewell, died Dec. 29, 2005 at her home.

Born Sept. 20, 1916 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late George and Martha Cook Harrison.

She was a member of the Adria Advent Christian Church. She was a loving homemaker and loved to cook.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Miles E. Sykes; one son, Roger L. Sykes; one daughter, Carol Noakes; one grandson John (Jay) E. Sykes; one brother, George Harrison; and one sister, Mattie Belcher.

Survivors: daughter, Christine S. Lockhart of Tazewell; grandchildren, Lynn McCoy, Mary Beth McReynolds, Roger (Rocky) L. Sykes, Randy Noakes and Diane Handy; and great grandchildren, Carrie Davis Foringer, Taylor Desiree' Davis, J. P. Kelly Sykes, Victoria Noakes, Charlie Noakes, Ashley Hengle, and Brandon McReynolds.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 31, 2005 at 8 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell with the Rev. Jonah Sparks officiating.

Interment and committal services were conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 1, 2006 at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Parkinson Foundation, 650 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032.

Mavis Fern Thomas

Mavis Fern Ratliff Thomas, 61, of Big Rock, died Dec. 29, 2005 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Hassell and Gracie Lester Ratliff.

She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County. She was a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by one son, Terry Lee Ratliff, Feb. 22, 2004, and one sister, Frances Ann Stiltner.

Survivors: husband, Clifford Thomas; brothers, Russell Ratliff and Bobby and wife, Nancy Ratliff, all of Grundy, Randy and wife, Connie Ratliff, of Conaway, Paul and wife, Rita Ratliff, of Big Rock, Roy David and wife, Tammy Ratliff, of Wardell; and several nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 2, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Harman Freewill Baptist Church in Maxie with Rev. Ronnie Sliger, Rev. Eddie Wilson and Rev. Bobby Ratliff officiating.

Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.

Services were held at the church Dec. 31, 2005 and Jan. 1, 2006 at 7 p.m.

Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah E. Thompson

Sarah Elizabeth Thompson, 84, of Heritage Hall, Tazewell, and formerly of Bluefield, VA, died Dec. 22, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born in Cliffield, she was the daughter of the late Georgia Witt Yost.

She was a lifelong resident of Bluefield, VA. She formerly attended church at the Children’s Temple Mission in Bluefield, VA.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her father; one sister, Maggie Riley; and one brother, Jack Farris.

Survivors: daughter, Elizabeth Ann Skeens and husband, Walter, of Bluefield, VA; sons, Kenneth Thompson and wife, Lena, of Bluefield, VA, Danny Thompson and wife, Deana, of North Tazewell, Stanley Thompson of Dallas, NC; six granddaughters; seven grandsons; and ten great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 24, 2005 at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Tim Gibson officiating.
