Virginia Mae Plaster

Virginia Mae Plaster, 84, of the Pine Creek section of Swords Creek, died Oct. 1, 2006 in a Bristol, TN hospital.

Born April 22, 1922 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Robinette Richardson. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Plaster; three grandchildren, Tommy Whited, Wilma Jean Barber, and Jeremiah Plaster; three sisters, Dora Webb, Pearl Cole, and Carlie Mutter; and one brother, Clarence Richardson.

Survivors: daughters, Ruby Whited and husband, Willard, of Raven, Brenda Perkins and husband, Henry, of Richlands; sons, David W. Plaster and Jerry Plaster, both of the home, Larry Plaster and wife, Tammy, of Rosedale; special grandson, Jonathan Plaster of the home; grandchildren, Russell Whited, Bobby Boyd, Timothy Boyd, and Christy Bowman; sisters, Myrtle Plaster of Richlands, Ida Richardson of Raven, and Dorothy Whited of Doran; brother, Robert Richardson of Pine Creek; and grandchildren, Keisha Whited, Nicole Whited, Elizabeth Green, Amanda Whited, Michael Boyd, Braydon Plaster, Lara Bowman, and Alex Bowman.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Jim Richardson, Rev. Carl Robinson, and Rev. Buddy Hearl officiating.

Interment will follow in the Family cemetery at Pine Creek.

Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Oct. 4.

Rosa Lark Sunderland

Rosa Lark Sunderland, 88, of Lebanon, formerly of Honaker, died Sept. 26, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Feb. 25, 1918 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Nannie Hess.

She had spent most of her life in the Honaker area and had attended Full Gospel House of Prayer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Sunderland; one brother, Vernie Hess; and three sisters, Blanche Perry, Mary McManus and Marie Guy.

Survivors: sister, Leona Runyon of Ohio; special niece and caretaker, Deloris Hess and husband, James, of Swords Creek; sister-in-law, Wanda Hess of Honaker; special friend, Phyllis Honaker James of Honaker; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Peerman Lester and Rev. Gerald Lester officiating.

Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Charlie Burke Sword

Charlie Burke Sword, 83, of Honaker, died Oct. 1, 2006 in a Mountain Home, TN Veterans Hospital.

Born May 4, 1923 in Russell County, he was a son of the late Susie Martin Sword.

He had spent most of his life in the area and was of the Holiness faith. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II, and was a member of the American Legion of Richmond.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June Sword, and one son, Wilmer Burke Sword.

Survivors: daughters, Shirley Farley and husband, Ronald, of Woodbridge, Sylvia Jean Kennedy and husband, James, Linda Cottingham and husband, Frank, and Laura Gail Compton and husband, Roger, all of Honaker; son, Ronald Lee Sword and wife, Linda, of Honaker; sister, Madeline Franklin of Front Royal; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. David Wilmouth officiating.

Interment will follow in the Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.

Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Post # 9864 of Lebanon.

Lowell C. VanDyke

Lowell C. VanDyke, 68, of Doran, died Oct. 2, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late George and Lou Looney VanDyke of Doran.

He was a Grundy Senior High School Class of 1957 graduate. He had spent most of his life in Ohio where he was a retired meat cutter for Dinner Bell Packing Company of Archbold, OH, before moving back to Doran 15 years ago.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Jackson, Ola Gay Matney, and Juanita Pasture.

Survivors: wife, Magaline Helton VanDyke; daughters, Teresa Vandyke of Dublin, OH, Debbie Castillo of Rockford, OH; sons, Randy Lee VanDyke and wife, Pam, of Defiance, OH, Tom VanDyke and wife, Kim, of Delaware, OH, Tony VanDyke of Doran; brothers, Noah VanDyke of Home Creek, Marshall VanDyke, Paul VanDyke and Joe VanDyke, all of Doran, Johnny VanDyke of Bristol, VA; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating.

Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Patricia K. Wallace

Patricia Karen Wallace, 50, of Honaker, died Sept. 29, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born July 31, 1956 in Richlands, she was a daughter of Charles Wayne and Pauline Wallace of Honaker.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and was of the Baptist faith.

Additional survivors: special friend, Joe Martin of the home; son, Steve Wayne Wallace of Honaker; granddaughter, Kayla Nicole Wallace of Honaker; sisters, Teresa Keen and husband, Mike, of Blackford, Pamla Damron and husband, Bobby, of Elkorn City, KY, and Linda Jackson and husband, Claude, of Red Ash; brothers, Mark Wallace and wife, Loretta, of Swords Creek, Gary Wallace and wife, Susan, of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Stevens and Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating.

Interment followed in the Martin cemetery on Stinson Ridge.

Ezra Crawford Baldwin

Ezra Crawford Baldwin, 69, of Council, died Sept. 22, 2006 at his home.

Born Nov. 9, 1936 in Drill, he was a son of the late Henry and Kathleen Ball Baldwin.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. He was a disabled coal miner and a United States Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Baldwin and Winfred Baldwin, and one sister, Estelle Horn.

Survivors: wife of 33 years, Fonnie Baldwin; son, Timothy Baldwin and two granddaughters, Michelle Baldwin and Nikki Baldwin, all of the home; sisters, Ruby Mitchell of Council, Bertie Lester of Drill, Hazel Musick of Lebanon, Ethel Lee of Galion, OH, Delphia Hubbard of Shelby, OH; special friends, Duke Street and Grover Lambert; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Kyle Ratliff officiating.

Interment followed in the Baldwin cemetery at Drill.

Peggy Faye Lewis Boyd

Peggy Faye Lewis Boyd, 67, of Mavisdale, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 22, 2006 at her home following a long courageous battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 9, 1939, in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Eva Lou Armes Lewis Owens of Mavisdale and the late George Lewis.

She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ and attended Garden Creek Church of Christ. She attended Longwood College and was a retired employee of Buchanan County School System having worked at Vansant School as secretary for 34-years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Albert Boyd, Jr., March 15, 2006; and one great-grandchild, Kloyie Madison Boyd.

Survivors: daughter, Elizabeth and husband, Donnie Yates, of Mavisdale; son, Joel Albert III and wife, Sheryl Boyd, of Mavisdale; sister, Shirley and husband, Clarence Bartlett, Jr., of Hillsville; grandchildren, Hollie Yates, Clay Yates and Jeremy and wife, Leslee Boyd; and step-great-grandchild, Alex Hubbert.

The funeral was conducted Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent, Rusty Owens and Wayne Cline officiating.

Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

A song service was held at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 and an evening service was held at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the funeral home.

Dora Marie Hankins

Dora Marie Hankins, 90, of North Tazewell, went to be with the Lord Sept. 24, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She was born in Tazewell County, and was the daughter of the late Ryntha and Vicie Beavers Sparks.

She had made her home in Tazewell County all her life. She was a very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She was cherished and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and her many friends. She was a member and along with her husband one of the founders of Yost Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She was also a Willing Worker of the Church, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

She was the widow of Rev. Nathan Elmer Hankins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary E. Hankins and by 10 brothers and sisters.

Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: daughters, Helen Smith and husband, Gerald, of Dallas, TX, Linda Shelton and husband, Tommy, of North Tazewell, Betty Jones and husband, Reese, of North Tazewell; sons, Tommy E. Hankins and wife, Carol, and Jimmy N. Hankins and wife, Judy, all of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Pam Fiveash and husband, John, Sheri Smith, Tina Rollins and husband, Ray, Darren Hankins, Kim Hankins, Wayne Hayes, Jr., Daphne Boutin and husband, John, Heather Asbury, Louren Shelton, and Jessika Jones; great grandchildren, Keyfer Fiveash, Payton Fiveash, Cameron Hayes, Brianne McReynolds, Nathan Boutin, Abby Asbury and Emma Asbury; sister, Hazel Hickman of Richlands; brother, Joe Sparks and wife, Ola Mae, of Cedar Bluff; special nieces, Shirley Susman and Nancy Wallace; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be conducted Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with the Rev. Ed Hankins and Rev. Ralph Bostic officiating.

Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Processing Center, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.

Clyde (Pops) Keene, Sr.

Clyde (Pops) Keene, Sr., 82, of North Tazewell, died Sept. 21, 2006 at his home.

Born Jan. 24, 1924 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William D. (Bill) Keene and Thursy Skeens Keene.

He was an US Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict. During his military service, he served tours in Alaska, Washington, Panama Canal, France, Germany, Italy, South America, Africa, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador. He retired from Jewel Smokeless Fuel Coke and Coal Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Myrtle Dales Keene; three sisters, Shelby Jean Lester, Flossie Keene Ramey, and Gladys Looney; and three brothers, Kelly Keene, Thomas Keene, and Agie Keene.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, with whom he made his home for the past 13 years and were his caregivers, Susan and Larry Keene of (Baptist Valley) North Tazewell; son and daughter-in-law, James and Donna Keene of Rocky Mount; son and daughter-in-law, Clyde Keene, Jr. and Kellie of Abingdon; sisters, Betty Prater of Lebanon, Jackie Stiltner of Abingdon, Pamela Spence and Patty Keene, both of Grundy; brothers, Elster Keene of Washington State, Clayton Keene of California, Ronnie Keene of Abingdon, Bobby Keene of Keen Mountain, LeRoy Blevins of Feds Creek, KY; grandchildren, Tracie Keene Kinser and husband, Richard, of Clearfork, Larry "Todd" Keene of (Baptist Valley) North Tazewell, Brian Keene of Texas, Amanda Woods and husband, Robert, of Elizabethtown, NC, Nathan Keene and wife, Michelle, of Rocky Mount, Heather Keene Hollandsworth and husband, Marty, of Martinsville; great grandchildren, Jacob, Jayden, Ben, Taleigh, Makayla, Emily, Tavice, and Hannah; caregivers, Preferred Hospice of Richlands and Peggy Sutherland; and his fishing buddy, Bill Bandy.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Walter Schwitzerlett and Mike Trent officiating.

Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Richard "Richie" Todd Keene

Richard "Richie" Todd Keene, 32, of Honaker, died Sept. 24, 2006 at his home.

Born June 1, 1974 in Richlands, he was a son of Cecil and Linda Gail Street Keene of Honaker.

A lifelong resident of Honaker, he was a 1992 graduate of Honaker High School and was of the Pentecostal faith.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hassell and Hassie Street and his paternal grandparents, Howard and Jennie Keene.

Additional survivors: son, Corey Chayce Keene of Honaker; brothers, Chris Keene and wife, Sandra, of Abingdon, Sammy Keene and wife, Melissa, of Bristol, VA; his fiancée, Candi Harris of Honaker; step-daughters, Lakin Keen, Hali Wells, and Cortney Wells; niece, Ellie Keene; nephews, Chandler Keene, Mark Austin, and Adam Keene; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Arvil Arwood and Rev. Gerald Lester officiating.

Interment will follow in the Street cemetery at Rowe.

Donald F. Osborne

Donald Franklin Osborne, 62, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Sept. 23, 2006 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born June 24, 1944 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Zeb and Ellie Osborne.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Neely Jackson, and one sister, Frances Geneva Osborne.

Survivors: wife, Ann Blanton Osborne; sons, Thomas Osborne and wife, Leigh Anne, of Lynchburg, Ronald Osborne and wife, Ashley, of Roanoke; daughters, Marsha Blankenship and fiancé, Duane Meeks, of Vinton; Leann Osborne and fiancé, Wade Rymer, of Roanoke; brother, James Osborne of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Ella Mae Johnson, Novella Alley and husband, Ralph, and Lovada Cooper, all of Abingdon, Gaynell Salyers and husband, James, and Darva Clifton and husband, Guster, all of Raven, Lucille Stewart of Dry Fork, Pat Lowe and husband, Eddie, of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, Nikki and Morgan, Lauren Taylor, Hollie, Brandon, Aaron, Jonathan, Destiny, Matthew, Faith and Michael; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 27 at Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands with Pastor Richard Dooley and Pastor Tony Shrader officiating.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Full Gospel Temple, 500 Miracle Valley Drive, Richlands, VA 24641.

Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is in charge of arrangements.
