Carey Lee Hale

Carey Lee Hale, 54, of the Wysor Valley section of Honaker, died Sept. 18, 2006 in a Charlottesville hospital.

Born June 13, 1952 in Richlands, he was a son of the late Carey Winfred and Lula Boyd Hale.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of the Outreach Temple in Wysor Valley. He was a disabled foreman with Jewell Smokeless Coal and Coke with 30 years of service. As a hobby, he was an avid horseman and cattleman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Hale.

Survivors: wife of 35 years, Ruthie Deskins Hale; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Jerl Keene of Honaker; son, Joshua Hale of Honaker; grandsons, Corey Keene and Keyton Keene; brothers, L.W. Hale of Honaker, Robert Hale and Sue Griffin of Selma, NC; sisters, Brenda Pritt and husband, O.J., of Rosedale, Alma Farmer and husband, Nolan, of Honaker; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Linda Deskins, Donnie and Susie Deskins, and Richard and Debbie Deskins; several nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Arvil Arwood, Rev. Lester Meadows, Rev. Kenny Taylor, and Rev. Phillip Cook officiating.

Interment will follow in the Boyd cemetery in Honaker.

Larry Dean Harris

Larry Dean Harris, 40, of Honaker, died Sept. 14, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Sept. 30, 1965 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Herbert and Eula Street Harris.

He was a lifelong resident of the area.

Survivors: wife, Peggy Sue Harris; children, Amanda Harris and Angela Heredia and husband, Michael, all of Honaker, Dean Green and wife, Melissa, of Richlands; brothers, Glenn Harris, Jack Harris and wife, Delphie, Richard Harris and wife, Kathy, David Harris, and James Harris, all of Honaker; sister, Judy Maynard and husband, Chester, of West Virginia; four grandsons; and three granddaughters.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Harless Hess officiating.

Joseph Dale Hess

Joseph Dale Hess, 72, of the Shannon’s Branch Road section of Baptist Valley, died Sept. 15, 2006 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Raven, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Polly Pratter Hess.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company. He was a member of the Full Gospel Outreach Ministries and was a U.S. Army peacetime veteran.

Joseph Dale Hess has left us with a love and understanding that came from deep inside his heart. He worked and lived the life of a coal miner-a hard life to support his wife and children, but he always took the time to be the husband and dad God intended him to be. Joe and his precious wife Linda blessed many lives with their bluegrass Christian music: The Glorybound Travelers. This was their gift and they gave freely.

Joe loved his fruit trees and took great pride in his orchards and he loved to share with others. He was a proud man and was proud he served his country in the military and was proud of his eight children and many grandchildren and was most proud of his wife Linda. The life he lived was a testimony in itself. His friends, Harold Shrader, Delmar Cox, and Shawn Roberts, and the special times they spent together brought a great joy to him. He gave his wife, children and friends love, joy, laughter, and respect. This was Joe Hess, husband, father, and friend. His memory will live forever in their hearts.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Stevenson; three sisters, Annie Brown, Cleo Craighead, and Margaret Hess; four brothers, Ted Hess, Balford Hess, Earl Hess, and Arvil Hess; and two infant brothers, Willie and Earnest Hess.

Survivors: wife of 32 years, Linda Sue Hess; daughters, Nancy Boyd and husband, Jerry, of Little Mount, SC, Teresa Goodie and husband, Dave, of Bristol, VA, Lisa Hess of Raven, Michelle Winters and husband, Mike, of Honaker; sons, Michael Hess of Manassas, Stevie Smith of Cedar Bluff, Greg Smith and wife, Donna, of Honaker, Manual Breedlove and wife, Anne, of Kentucky; sisters, Peggy Griffith of Raven, Dolly Hamblin and husband, Cecil, of Maryland, Mary Richardson and husband, David, of Swords Creek; brothers, Dallas Hess and wife, Barbara, and Jessie Hess and wife, Joanne, all of Raven; grandchildren, Keith, Jessica, Jeremy, Sara, Jamie, Jacob, Justin, Chelsea, Celestino, Makenna, and special grandchildren, Kayla and Kevin Stevenson; great grandchildren, Savannah, Emma, Alex, Jordan, and Javin; and special friends, Harold Shrader, Delmar Cox, Anne Whitt, and Tamela Carey.

The funeral was conducted Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin and Rev. Otis Musick officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites.

Winifred G. Kirtner

Winifred G. Lafon Kirtner, 84, of Falls Mills, died Sept. 13, 2006 at her home.

Born in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Dexter Lafon and Sally Daniels Lafon.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Memorial Post 9696 in Bluefield, VA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeff Johnson.

Survivors: husband, Robert Kirtner; son, David Kirtner and wife, Myra, of Powhatan; daughters, Linda Buckland and husband, Cecil, of Moneta, Vicki Kirtner of Falls Mills, Jody Snell of Roanoke and her late husband, Larry Snell; sister, Betty Janutolo of Bluefield, VA; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Raymond Amos officiating.

Entombment followed in the Grandview Mausoleum.

Charles "Hoss" Kitts, Sr.

Charles H. "Hoss" Kitts, Sr., 76, of Falls Mills Rd., Bluefield, VA, died Sept. 11, 2006 at a Bluefield hospital.

Born in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of the late Joseph M. Kitts and Blanche Hinkle Kitts.

He was retired from N&W Pocahontas Division, in Bridge and Building, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a MP. He served in the 720th Military Police Battalion. He was also a member of the Bluefield VFW Memorial Post 9696, the Tazewell County Historical Society, Sons of the Confederacy, AARP, honorary member of the Bluefield, VA Rescue Squad and a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Fay England Kitts; one sister, Loretta Carter; and two brothers, John Fred Kitts and Bill S. Kitts.

Survivors: sons, Charles H. "Hoss" Kitts, Jr. and Randolph Joseph (Buddy) Kitts, both of North Tazewell, James Edward Kitts of Christiansburg; daughter, Roma Gail Kitts Ledgerwood of Bluefield, VA; son-in-law, David Ledgerwood; brother, James O. Kitts of Pounding Mill; grandchildren, Charles H. Kitts III and wife, Janet, Alexander H. Ledgerwood, Joshua A. Kitts, Kelli Nicole Kitts, Lyndsey Brooke Ledgerwood, James C. Kitts, Randi Jo Kitts and Michael Elijah Kitts; great granddaughter, Madelyn Grace Kitts; special business partner, John Broce; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends at Tazewell Co. Library and Bluefield, Va. Rescue Squad.

Graveside services were conducted Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Mausoleum Chapel in Bluewell, WV, with William E. "Bill" Rich officiating.

Military services were held by the Bluefield, VA VFW Memorial Post 9696.

Donations may be made to the Bluefield, VA Rescue Squad, Sons of Confederacy or the Tazewell Co. Library.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA was in charge of arrangements.

Lillie Rose Sargent Lewis

Lillie Rose Sargent Lewis, 94, of North Tazewell, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 13, 2006.

Born Sept. 14, 1911 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Julia Conley Sargent.

She was a faithful member of the North Tazewell Church of God of Prophecy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ruey Lee Lewis; three daughters, Lucille Marie Davis, Margaret Sue Lewis, and Betty Jane Lewis; one son, Donald Nelson Lewis; one grandson, Dwight Davis; and several brothers and sisters. She was a blessing to everyone who knew her and will be missed by all.

Survivors: daughters, Linda McLemore and husband, Dennis, of Claypool Hill, Sylvia Turley of North Tazewell, Hattie Ruth Wilder and husband, Bige, of Maryland; sons, Alfred Lewis of North Tazewell, Wilburn Lewis and wife, Shirley, of Tazewell; 22 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and very special friends and caregivers, Linda Street and Linda Reedy.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at Peery and St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Fred Mooney officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

James (Jimmy) Mullins

James (Jimmy) Mullins, 69, of Whitewood, died Sept. 12, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born March 30, 1937 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Jay and Bessie Mae Johnson Mullins.

He was a retired coal miner and was a member of UMWA. He was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherry Elaine Mullins and Para Mullins; one sister, Betty Mullins; and one son-in-law, Robert H. White II.

Survivors: wife of 47 years, Cora Horn Mullins; daughter, Tara Mullins White of Whitewood; granddaughter, Carrie Aleshia White of Whitewood; brothers, Thomas Mullins and wife, Alberta, Bobby Mullins and wife, Delma, and Adlai Mullins and wife, Bonnie, all of Pilgrims Knob, Jerry Mullins and wife, Joann, of Temple, TX; and sisters, Phyllis Horn of Chicago, IL, and Doris Miller and husband, Tommy, of Pounding Mill.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Jimmy Cole officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Georgia Irene Osborne

Georgia Irene Osborne, 82, of Phelps, KY, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sept. 15, 2006 at Appalachian Regional Hospital at South Williamson, KY, following an extended illness.

Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late William Walker and Margaret (Mag) Arms Osborne.

She was a resident of Buchanan County for many years prior to moving to Phelps and was a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church. She was a loving Sister, Aunt and was a Domestic Worker.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Goldie Arms, and one brother, Franklin Osborne.

Survivors: sisters, Juanita Murphy and Betty and husband, Ray Smith, all of Vansant; brothers, Donald and wife, Julie Osborne, of Roanoke, James and wife, Della Osborne, of Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Evelyn Osborne of Richlands; and aunts, Eva Lou Owens of Mavisdale, and Dixie Osborne of Honaker.

The funeral will be conducted Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Eddie Wilson, Minister Ronnie Sliger and Evg. Mike Rife officiating.

Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.

Services were held at the funeral home Sept. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.

Cora Jane Owens

Cora Jane Owens, 83, of Swords Creek, died Sept. 14, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1922 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late William Silas and Martha Caroline Dye Boyd.

A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Duty View Primitive Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Owens, five brothers, and five sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughter, Deborah Owens of Richlands; son, Vaughn S. Owens, Jr. of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Anthony Vaughn Owens, Jason Alexander Owens, and Jaclyn Elizabeth Pruitt; great-granddaughter, Katlyn Owens; and a host of beloved family and friends.

The funeral was conducted at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in the New Garden Primitive Baptist Church in Honaker with Elder Garnell Gilbert and Elder Bobby Arrington officiating.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Owens cemetery in Finney.

Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

William B. Payne, IV

William Burbridge Payne, IV, 23, of Richlands, died Sept. 17 in a Norfolk hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Ralph F. Richardson

Ralph Franklin Richardson, 51, of Bristol, VA, died Sept. 13, 2006 in Swords Creek.

Born April 17, 1955 in Richlands, he was a son of Sarah Richardson of Swords Creek and the late Elmer Richardson.

He had lived most of his life in the Swords Creek area and had lived in Bristol for the past seven years. He was a disabled welder and was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Jennie Richardson and his maternal grandparents, Jay and Edgar Richardson.

Additional survivors: sister, Rita Gay Reynolds and husband, Eddie, of Swords Creek; brother, Randy Michael Richardson and wife, Susan, of Lebanon; nieces, Kimberly Sexton and husband, Brian, Angela Reynolds, and Chenelle Lambert; nephews, Michael Richardson, Jerry Reynolds and Randy Damron; great-nieces, Rachel Sexton, Olivia Sexton, Raquel Damron, and Organna Damron; special great-nephew, Joseph Richardson; great-nephews, Eric Lambert and Orion Damron; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Perkins and Rev. Jim Richardson officiating.

Interment followed in the Richardson cemetery on Horton Ridge.
