Ada T. Hall

Ada T. Hall, 93, of Honaker, died Aug. 21, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1912 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William and Ida Thompson Thomas.

She had resided in Honaker since 1979, spending most of her life in Buchanan County. She was a member of the Honaker Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burt Hall; one step-son, C.B. Hall; one brother, Brady Thomas; two sisters, Lacy Church and Helen Prater; and several half-brothers and half-sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: daughters, Bonnie Bailey and husband, Earl, of Honaker, Helen Johnson and husband, Clayton, of Rowe; son, Hurshel Hall and wife, Carol, of Manassas; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several half-brothers, and half-sisters.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 23 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Ancil Childress and Pastor Larry Brooks officiating.

Interment will follow in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.

Kenneth Lee Honaker

Kenneth Lee Honaker, 47, of Swords Creek, went to be with Jesus, Aug. 16, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Born March 25, 1959 in Tazewell County, he was a son of Dorothy Dye Honaker of Swords Creek and the late Charlie A. Honaker.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Baptist faith.

Additional survivors: daughter, Natasha Honaker of Bristol, TN; son, Brandon Honaker of Rosedale; sisters, Milly Plaster and beloved brother-in-law, Nelson Plaster, and Connie Smith, all of Swords Creek; brothers, Johnny Honaker and wife, Pam, of Abingdon and Scottie Honaker of Swords Creek; beloved nieces, Sara Plaster of Swords Creek, Brittany Nunley of Abingdon; beloved nephews, Charles Edwards and Ryan Osborne, both of Swords Creek, Eric Honaker of Bristol, TN, Damien Helbert of Lebanon; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 19 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Grady McGlothlin and Rev. David Perkins officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Christopher E. Justice

Christopher E. Justice, 27, of Vansant, died Aug. 19, 2006.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Lucille Deel Justice of Vansant and the late James C. Justice.

He was a former employee of Wendy’s Restaurant.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Brian Keith Justice, June 12, 1985; paternal grandfather, John F. Justice; and maternal grandparents, Alfred Burton and Stacy Bell Deel.

Additional survivors: sisters, Sandra Dee Boyd of Prater, Karen Yates of Honaker, Julie Ann Rash of Big Rock; brother, James G. Justice of Vansant; and paternal grandmother, Mexico Justice of McClure.

The funeral will be conducted Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent and Rev. Eddie Wilson officiating.

Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Services were held Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles E. Keen

Charles Elmer Keen, 60, of Grundy, died Aug. 17, 2006 in a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Marion W. and Marinda Virgie Harman Keen, both Buchanan County natives.

He had spent his entire life in the Buchanan County area and was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. Keen and Kermit Keen, Jr.

Survivors: sisters, Bonnie Clemons and Ola Gay Keen, both of Raven, and brother, Claudie Keen of Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. David Lowe and the Rev. Trula Harman officiating.

Interment followed at Harman Family cemetery in Marvin.

Andrew Chapman Lane

Andrew Chapman Lane, 78, of Road Ridge in Raven, died Aug. 15, 2006 at the home of his daughter, following a lengthy illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County and was the son of the late James Basil and Eva Hurt Lane.

He served his country while enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, 1948-1952, and also enlisted with the US Army National Guard in 1964. He had been a truck driver, having hauled coal and also working for Prestige Ford before his retirement. He was a member of Road Ridge Assembly of God Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine of his brothers and two sisters.

Survivors: daughter, Patricia Ball and husband, Danny, of Raven; son, Jeffrey Lane of Knoxville, TN; brother, Den Lane of Richlands; and grandson, Allen Ball.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 17 at Road Ridge Assembly of God Church in Raven with Danny Ball, Rev. James Salyers and Rev. Jerry Welch officiating.

Interment followed at Andrew Lane Memorial cemetery on Road Ridge.

Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

George P. Lockhart

George P. Lockhart, 76, of the Prater section of Vansant, died Aug. 16, 2006 at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Tom and Bertha O’Quinn Lockhart.

He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was an active member of Coleman United Methodist Church for 51 years. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict assigned to the BTRY "A" 45th AAA GN BN Germany, receiving the Occupational medal (Germany). He was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Corporation VP #1 and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1509. He enjoyed fishing, wood working and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Cundiff, Dolly Lester and Leah Lockhart; and one brother, Roy Lockhart.

Survivors: wife, Janice Owens Lockhart of Rt. 1, Vansant; daughter, Linda and husband Sandy Tarlton, of Charlotte, NC; sons, Bryan Keith and wife Patrice Lockhart of Pounding Mill, Jonathan Scott and wife, Kathryn Lockhart of Christiansburg; sister, Lorene and husband, Tolly Charles of Rt. 1, Vansant; brothers, Elmer and wife, Arbutious Lockhart and William Bill and wife Judy Lockhart, all of Rt. 1, Vansant; and grandchildren, Erin, Bethany, Nicolas, Ella, Jordan and Christopher Lockhart.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Thacker and Rev. J.N. Howard officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Services were held at the funeral home Aug. 18 at 7 p.m.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to Coleman’s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 369, Haysi, VA 24256.

Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.

James Perkins

James Perkins, 58, of Lexington, NC, formerly of Richlands, died Aug. 14, 2006 at his residence.

He was born Jan. 12, 1948, in Russell County, to Lance and Ada Marie Hess Perkins.

He was formerly employed with Design Masters in High Point.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Robert Perkins.

Additional survivors: wife, Shelby White Perkins; sons, James Richard Perkins and wife, Lisa, of Lexington, Terry Perkins of Columbus, OH; daughters, Jamie Leeann Blackwell and husband, J.D., of High Point, Monica Byerly and husband, Brandon, of Lexington, Melissa Brumbaugh of Columbus, OH; 15 grandchildren; brother, Bill Perkins of Bucyrus, OH; and sisters, Helen Hubbard and Judy Dye of Swords Creek, and Della Tatum of Pounding Mill.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at Life Tabernacle Pentecostal Church in Archdale, where he was a member, by the Rev. Bryan Adkins.

Burial followed in Lexington City cemetery.

Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington assisted the family.

Wilma Jean Barber

Wilma Jean Whited Barber, 42, of Raven, died Aug. 9, 2006 at her home following a brief illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1963 in Richlands, she was the daughter of Ruby and Willard Whited of Raven.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Whited; grandparents, Cecil Plaster, Carl Horton, Felix Whited, Mary Hess Whited; and step grandmother, Maggie Sparks Whited.

Additional survivors: husband, John Barber; daughters, Amanda Whited and Elizabeth Greene, both of Raven; brother, Russell Whited and wife, Cindy, of Cedar Bluff; special nephew, D.J. Jeter; special nieces, Nicole and Keisha Whited; grandmother, Virginia Mae Plaster of Swords Creek; and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Clyde Ball officiating.

Burial followed in the Family cemetery at Pine Creek.

Mary (Darby) Brown

Mary Elizabeth (Darby) Brown, 67, of Richlands, died Aug. 12, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.

Born at Pounding Mill, she was the daughter of the late Walter Marion Harris and Clara V. Ringstaff Harris.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Richlands First Assembly of God Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, George William Brown, Jr.; one daughter, Glenna Sue Cox; and one brother, Glenn Skip Harris.

Survivors: sons, Mike Brown and wife, Rhonda, of Paintlick; Robert (Bob) Brown and wife, Kathy, of Wardell, Richard Brown and wife, Teri, of Richlands; brother, Jerry Harris and wife, Shirley, of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, Michelle Jackson, John Cox, Katie Brown, Hunter Brown, Landon Brown and Spencer Brown; great grandchildren, Lindsey Cox and Ethan Cox; special friends, employees of Preferred Hospice; caregivers, Bobbi Baxter, Natalie Lynn, Eve Lewis; and a host of friends and neighbors.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Buddy Herald and Rev. Paul Crawford officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

The family request that in lieu of flowers donations to be made to the Richlands First Assembly of God Church Building Fund, 430 Virginia Avenue, Richlands, VA 24641.

Garry Daniel Combs

Garry Daniel Combs, 62, of the Finney section of Honaker, died Aug. 12, 2006 at his home.

Born March 19, 1944 in Russell County, he was a son of the late Charles Brady and Olivia Charm Crabtree Combs.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was formerly employed at the American Electric Power plant at Carbo, prior to becoming disabled.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gary Daniel Combs, Jr.

Survivors: wife of 40 years, Retha Barton Combs; sons, Charles David Combs, Terry Dean Combs and Mark Allen Combs, all of Finney; daughter, Retha Gail Musick of Council; brothers, Harley Combs, Joseph Combs, Jim Combs, Larry Combs, Wayne Combs, Robert Combs and Carter Combs; sister, Billie Dove Barton; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 3 p.m. Aug. 14 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Fairley Spencer officiating.

Interment followed in the Combs Family cemetery in Finney.

Roger Lee Cordle

Roger Lee Cordle, 63, died peacefully at his home in Yucaipa, CA, July 25, 2006, following an extended battle with cancer.

Born and reared in Seaboard, he was a son of the late Earnest and Lucille Cordle.

He attended Tazewell County schools and graduated from Richlands High School in 1960. To the end he remained a loyal Blue Tornado fan and kept up with his beloved "Blues" all through the years.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served honorably for four years. After his discharge from the Air Force in 1964, he served for many years as a Sheriff’s Deputy in Riverside County, CA. He had held other jobs prior to his death.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Richard P. Cordle, who died in May of 2000.

Survivors: brother, Ronald J. Cordle and wife, Alice, of Belfast; half-sister, Ann Head, of Hall, TN; a grandson in California; a granddaughter in Ohio; several nieces and nephews in Virginia; very special friends in California, Norman Briggs of Yucaipa and Travis and Lori McElyea of Riverside, CA. They were his best friends in his later years, and they loved and nurtured him through his final ordeal.

The funeral was held Aug. 7 at Riverside National cemetery in Riverside, where he was buried with military honors and now rests in peace.

Funeral services were conducted by Aaron Cremation & Burial Services, Mark B. Shaw Chapel, of San Bernardino, CA.
