BARBARA F. JONES

Barbara Faye Jones, 68, went to be with the Lord April 30, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Grace and Alton Fowler, and predeceased by her mother in law Louise Jones and brother in law Jimmy Boyette.

Survivors include her husband Marvis Jones; brother Roger Fowler and wife Betty, sister Deborah Boyette; nieces and nephews Kimberly and Jesse Bass, Julie and Brandon McMahan, Todd and Jenny Fowler, Chad and Dana Fowler, and Chris Reavis; great nieces and nephews Cooper Bass, Ethan McMahan, Emily and Peyton Fowler, and Gavin and Bryce Fowler; father in law Marvis G. Jones, Sr. and sister in law Norma and Johnny Reavis. She is also survived by her loving cats and dogs.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 2PM in the R.W. Baker & Co Funeral Home and Crematory by Bob Jackson with burial in Somerton United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Monday May 2, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Roger and Betty Fowler.

PAUL D. HOLLOMON

Paul Davis Hollomon, 65, went to be with the lord April 14, 2011. He was born in Norfolk to the late Genevieve and Joseph D. Hollomon.

Paul was a truck driver, a life member of Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad and Suffolk Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; four daughters, Michelle Virginia Hollomon, Gabrielle Josephine Hollomon, Danielle Elizabeth Hollomon, and Christelle Genevieve Hollomon; sister-in-law Shirley B. Arthur and family; brother-in-law John Byrum, Jr. and family.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 at 12:30 PM in Suffolk Church of God, 205 Kilby Ave, Suffolk by the Rev. Arthur Lee Harris with burial in Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church, Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, PO Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.

IVA D. STATON

Iva Daniel Staton, 75, of Chesapeake, Va. died at home on March 9, 2011 in the presence of her family after a courageous battle with a rare neurological disease. She is survived by her husband, William T. Staton; sister, Edith D. Halsey; brother, Mickey C. Daniel; son Rowland D. Staton; daughter, Mary T. Hasan; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Ashleigh, and Irena.

A native of Volney, Va., she graduated from Oak Hill Academy in 1952 and later from Radford College, in 1956. She spent a decade as an English teacher at Churchland High, Cradock High, and Academy Park Elementary Schools, before retiring. She enjoyed gardening, attending weekly ceramics class in Bower's Hill, ACC basketball, and spending time in the company of friends and family.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Indiana United Methodist Church. There will be visitation in the church's social hall immediately following the service.

Flowers can be sent to R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 509 West Washington Street in Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Indiana United Methodist Church, where she was a dedicated member for 48 years.

RALPH B. KING

Ralph Butler King, devoted Father, husband, and friend peacefully passed through 'those Golden Gates'¯, Monday, March 7, 2011 at his home surrounded by family. Born in Suffolk, Va. on November 25, 1925 he was predeceased by his parents M. B. and Clairine Ward King, two brothers, Winfred King and Rufus Powell and his wife of 46 years, Alice Carter King.

Left to cherish his life and the memories abound are his daughter, Faye King Milteer of Alma, AR. (Gary); son Kenneth Butler King (Tricia); sister Christine King Nelms all of Suffolk, Va. A loving grandfather and a great grandfather he leaves behind four grandchildren, Tracy Sapp, Trina Shuey, Health Milteer, and Taylor King; and six great grandchildren, Brittany and Mikayla Sapp, Hanna and Olivia Shuey and Ellie Milteer and Emily Dodd.

Also to cherish his life in his later years was his additional family. Leaving behind was his devoted wife of 11 years, Mary Britt King and her children, Bessie Mae Mathias (Stewart), Wayne Britt (Sandy) and Faye Bright (Arthur) along with six grand children who called him Paw Paw.

Mr. King served in the U. S. Army in the Europe Theater and retired after 35 years of service with Virginia Power Company, Suffolk division as an Auger Truck driver and Operator. To his co-workers he was always called 'Clem'¯. Known for his master vegetable and flower gardens Mr. King was a master at growing any and all things but what he loved most was watching it grow and then giving it away.

A funeral service will be held at 11 A. M. Thursday, March 10, 2011 in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street with burial in Holly Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 P. M. to 9 P. M. at the funeral home. . On behalf of the family in lieu of flowers please make any donations to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Foundation or any other organization of your choice in his name.

RICHARD L. ERTEL

Richard Lyle Ertel, 89, passed away at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA, on February 8, 2011. Originally of Apache Junction, AZ, he recently moved to Corapeake, NC. He was the son of the late Jess and Edris Ertel.

Richard is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nadine; daughter, Patty Jonez of Yuma, AZ; son, Jim Ertel of Monument, CO; stepdaughters, Lisa, Yvonne, and Deavia; stepson, Zerone; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

SUE VICK

Mary Sue Vick, 65, died February 5, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Marvin and Willie Morgan. She is preceded in death by her son John I. Corbman, Jr. and brothers Jack P. Morgan and Johnny C. Morgan.

Mrs. Vick was a member of Eureka Baptist Church and a member of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Harley Owners Groups.

She is survived by her loving husband Wayne Vick. Daughter Susie Wuchter and husband Glenn of Suffolk, VA. Sister Bonnie Snead of Sunbury, NC and sister-in-laws Mildred Morgan of Corapeake, NC and Cindy Morgan of Elizabeth City, NC. Grandchildren Doyle Gillis, III, Courtney Wuchter, and Kirsten Wuchter and 'adopted'¯ daughter Sheila Pate, and family of Vanceboro, NC. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sue never met a stranger!

A memorial service will be conducted in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Hampton Roads Chapter, 760 Lynnhaven Pkwy, Ste. 201, Virginia Beach, VA 23452 or the American Cancer Society, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.

DOUGLAS STOWELL

Douglas Stowell, 60, died January 27, 2011. Born in Mass., he had been a Suffolk area resident for the passed 30 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and also watching Racing and Wrestling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Loeman Richard and Norma June Stowell, his sister Cynthia Stowell, brothers Richard Allen Stowell and Dennis Leoman Stowell, and step mother Nancy Stowell. Surviving is his wife Florence of 25 years, a brother Leoman Jr., step sisters Linda and Pansy McKnight, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the graveside in Newman Memorial cemetery. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family.

GWENDOLYN SAMPLE RICHARDS

Gwendolyn Sample Richards, died January 21, 2011.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Richards, Jr.; mother, Lois Young and stepfather, Kennard Allen Young; brothers, Clinton Adair Sample, Jr., William Wesley Sample; niece, Savannah Sample, all of Portsmouth.

LLOYD EDWARD DEIR

Lloyd Edward Deir, 94, died September 18, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Catherine and Charles L. Deir and was preceded by his wife Doris Marie Deir.

“Pop Pop” was known for his loving kindness to people and animals. He served in the Army during WWII and as the Holland Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief for many years and retired from Peanut City. He was known for his mechanical expertise that culminated in the raising of the sunken tanker “The African Queen” in 1959, which was chronicled in the book “The Raising of the Queen”.

He will be greatly missed by his children Lloyd “Ed” Deir, Jr. and wife Francine of Norfolk, VA, Doris “Lorraine” Evans and husband Joe of Colerain NC, and Allen “David” Deir of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren Joanne, Dee, Pam, Daniel, Jarrod, Bryan, Matt, Brent, Nick, Eric, and Brianna; 12 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the R.W. Baker & Co Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 PM.

Mr. Christopher Thomas Hite
October 25, 1981 - July 31, 2002

Christopher Thomas Hite, age 20 of South Hill, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002. He was an employee of Heritage Signs of Virginia in Dinwiddie. He is survived by his parents Geraldine E. and Willie E. Hite of South Hill, his brother Michael T. Hite of Chesapeake and his maternal great grandmother Laura Evans of Baskerville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the Funeral Home.

GORDON L. BUTTLES

Lt. Col. (Ret) Gordon L. Buttles formally of Hampton, Va. passed away peacefully on Aug. 27, 2011 at the age of 88. Born in Filmore, New York, July 1923. Gordon joined the Army in 1943 and worked his way through aviation cadets school, receiving his commission as a pilot in the USAF. A veteran of WWII he served his Country proudly as a Fighter Pilot in the European theater and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. In May 1964 after 22 years of military service he retired from 94th Sq. Langley AFB Tactical Air Command. In September of 1964 his civilian career started with the Bank of Virginia as a loan officer and then with UVB/Citizen and Marine Bank as a Branch Manager at Langley Air Force Base where he showed the care and passion for his community and clientele . Gordon was known throughout the community as a man of his word, a shoulder to lean on as well as the go to man and a compassionate business man who helped many Air Force and Hampton residents with their new beginnings and dreams. Gordon retired as Vice President of United Virginia Bank in 1982.

Gordon had a passion for hunting, woodworking and golf but mostly his enjoyment in life was to spend time with his wife and large family. He was known as a very giving and loving man as well as a jokester. He always had a big smile, hugs and loving words for everyone.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, MaryAnn, his father William Henry Buttles (Elizabeth), mother Nellie Peachey (E.J.), Brother Floyd Joseph (Lillan) his sister Onalee VanValkenburg (Wilford)and infant child.

Survived by his eight children, Mike Buttles of South Carolina, Onalee Smith (Bill) of California, G. Mark Buttles (Donna) of Suffolk, VA, Brooke Eure (Hank) Hampton, VA, Scott Buttles (Janae) of Washington State, Rebecca Key (Will) of Virginia Beach, VA, Jeff Buttles of Georgia and Kari Henderson (Dave) of North Carolina.

Grandchildren; Michelle Chamberlin (Skylar ), Kimberly Buttles, JB Stovall, Kip Eure (Jennifer), Ryan Harris (Joe), Rachel Isabelle (Chad), and Carl Barnes (Morgan)

Great-grandchildren; Bryan Eure, Brice Eure, Jacob Gordon, Joseph Harris Jr. and Taylor Harris.

Niece; Elaine Fancy (Robert), Nephew; Grant Buttles and Cousin Bob Felton (Elvie).

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to all staff members and residents of Magnolia Manor for the unprecedented care and friendship given to our father while a resident. They gave him the strength to outlive his heart. We also would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Dr. Wiseman and his staff for the outstanding care they showed to our father and mother.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 1, 10:00 AM, Langley Air Force Base Chapel, 181 Dodd Blvd, Langley AFB, VA 23665. To enter Langley AFB you will need to enter the LaSalle gate. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

HENRY (DOUG) D. LINDSAY, III

Henry Douglass (Doug) Lindsay, III, passed away September 23, 2011 in Suffolk, VA from Melanoma Metastatic Cancer. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Douglass Lindsay, Jr. of Williamsburg, VA.

Mr. Lindsay had been a resident of Suffolk for more than 40 years, working at Planters Peanuts in 1970, The Suffolk Housing Authority, Goodman Segar Hogan Real Estate, and the Realty Referral Company of Suffolk. He was a graduate of Warwick High School of Newport News, Louisburg College, and University of Mississippi. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Doug was active and enjoyed participating in Chamber of Commerce activities, the Jaycees, Ruritan Club, Toast Masters, Tidewater Realtor Association, Louisburg College Alumni Association, and the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Virginia Barnett of Roanoke, and Jane Lindsay of Salem; brothers, Andrew Lindsay of Newport News, and Harvey Lindsay of Lynchburg, VA; and 10 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 2:30 pm in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA, 23434 by the Rev. Rebecca P. Lesley.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Doug by becoming a volunteer, an organ donor, and giving blood to The American Red Cross.

LES GRIGGS, SR.

Chancey Leslie “Les” Griggs, Sr. passed away Monday, October 03, 2011. He was born in Gates County, NC on October 11, 1933. He was the son of the late Ocie Lee Griggs and Carrie Whitehurst Griggs. He was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ. He was retired from the Ford Motor Company Norfolk Assembly Plant after 38 years. He was also a member of UAW Local 919, Kings Fork Ruritan Club, VFW Post 2582.

He was predeceased by his wife Marie Jordan Griggs. He was also predeceased in death by his sisters Myrtle G. Flower, Virginia G. Speight, Mildred M. Burnett and brothers Charles H. Griggs and Thomas E. Griggs as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by a son, Chancey Leslie Griggs, Jr., daughters, Alice Faye Stafford, Cynthia G. Barbour (Charles), and Linda G. Hight (Eric), three granddaughters, Jessica B. Raines (Jay), Amanda K. Barbour, and Danielle N. Stafford, and two great-grandchildren, Hailey A. Raines and Nathan Thomas Barbour. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph L. Griggs (Emma) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the R. W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 West Washington Street, Suffolk, VA by Rev. Michael D. Halley followed by entombment at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM.

HERMAN G. PRESSON, JR.

Herman Gordon Presson, Jr. 78, died in his home October 3, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was retired from Smithfield Packing and was a retired Livestock Farmer. He was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church, Suffolk, VA. He attended Chuckatuck High School.

He was predeceased by his parents Herman Gordon Presson, Sr. and Mary Ethel Presson. He was also predeceased by his brother Thomas Presson and one niece.

Mr. Presson is survived by two sons, Jimmy Presson of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Gary Presson and wife Janine of Marion, Montana; two daughters Laura P. Pulley and husband Brian of Richmond, VA and Anne Beth P. Burnham and husband Brian of Suffolk, VA; one sister Barbara P. Carter and husband John of Suffolk, VA and one brother Gene Presson also of Suffolk, VA; seven grandchildren Eric and Megan Presson of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Drew, Rachel and Linden Pulley of Richmond, VA, Sarah and Hannah Burnham of Suffolk, VA and six nieces and six nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 2:00 PM by Rev. Micah Voight at Western Branch Baptist Church, 6952 Old Myrtle Road, Suffolk, VA. The family will receive friends at the R. W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 West Washington Street, Suffolk, VA on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Mr. Whitfield Gittman
August 28, 1917 - October 29, 2003

Mr. Whitfield Gittman, 86, of Blackridge died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at his residence. He was a former member and past Commander of the Brodnax Camp #191 Woodman of the World, the widower of Bernice Mise Gittman, a carpenter and farmer. Mr. Gittman is survived by his three sons, James Earl Gittman of Blackridge, Whitfield 'Buck' Gittman and wife Rachel of LaCrosse and Bobby Lee Gittman and wife Clara of Brodnax, his daughter Bonnie Lou Gittman of Blackridge, five grandchildren, Krystle R., Andrew L., Brian S. and Timmy D. Gittman and Sandra D. Ittner, two great grandchildren Sarah Ittner and Landon S. Gittman; two sisters Lucy Gittman of Richmond and Betty Watson of south Hill. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A. M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in the Mise Family cemetery in Blackridge. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 422, South Hill, Va. 23970.
