MARGARET W. POARCH

Margaret Wilkins Poarch, 85, passed away May 10, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk.

Born in Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Helen Wilkins. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter, Judith Margaret Peters; and her sister, Dorothy Howell. Mrs. Poarch was a member of First Baptist Church and the Eunice Sunday School Class. She was retired from Obici Hospital.

Survivors include her loving husband, Norborne Tucker 'N.T.'¯ Poarch, Jr.; daughter, Judy Poarch Peters and husband, Donald, of Greenville, NC; sons, N. Tucker Poarch, III of Greenville, NC, William 'Billy'¯ Poarch of Richmond, VA; granddaughter, Bethany Dale Poarch; sisters, Elsie Hays, Louise Benton, Ann Wheeler, Audrey Robertson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret's family would like to thank N.T. for all the kindness, care, and love he has shown his loving wife for the past 63 years. N.T. and Margaret just celebrated their wedding anniversary on May 1, 2011.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. by her nephew, the Rev. Dr. Thurman R. Hayes, Jr., of Norcross, GA, in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA, with burial in Holly Lawn cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Building and Improvement Fund, 237 N. Main Street, Suffolk, VA, 23434.

Mr. Walter Melvin Reynolds, Jr.
June 27, 1930 - October 9, 2003

Walter Melvin Reynolds, Jr., age 73 of Boydton, died Thursday, October 9, 2003 in the W. S. Hundley Annex. He retired from the U. S. Army with 21 years of military service. He later retired from the U. S. Postal Service in Arlington. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at Arlington National cemetery October 22 with full military honors. He is survived by his wife Gladys K. Reynolds; four daughters Kim Parrish of Chase City, Julie Boyter of South Hill, Stacie Reynolds and Laurel Prince both of Boydton; a son Mark Reynolds of Woodstock, Georgia; a sister Loretta Scarbro of Mount Carbon, W. VA; a brother Tom Reynolds of Montgomery Heights, W. VA and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday, October 10 from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home.

WILLIAM M. COX

William Melvin 'Bill'¯ Cox, 81, passed away April 29, 2011 in Florida.

Bill was born in Gloversville, New York on March 29, 1930, the son of Melvin and Albina Cox. He was a graduate of M.I.T. with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. In 1951, Bill married Virginia Blair of Suffolk, Virginia and worked for Curtis Wright in New Jersey.

After three years they moved back to Gloversville and Bill worked with his father in the leather industry. In 1972, Bill and his family moved to Longwood, Florida where he started Cox Corporation, a custom home building company. His son, Bill Jr., joined him in the business in 1978 and Cox Corporation continues on today. Bill retired in the mid 90's but he and Jenny remained as directors of the company.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jenny; three children, Kim, Bill and Jeff; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Courtney, Blair, Owen and Jonathan; and two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Carly.

Bill's passions in life were his faith and his family. He actively enjoyed tennis, golf, snow and water skiing, and walking by the ocean at New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Funeral services will be held at R. W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be at Holly Lawn cemetery in Suffolk. The family will receive relatives and friends Friday, May 6th between 6:00 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

RUTH M. BICKHAM

Ruth Mary Bickham, 88, died peacefully May 1, 2011. She was born in Eldorado Arkansas on August 21, 1922. Her parents were Erman Daniel Woodburn and Ida Black Woodburn from Tyler County WV. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Daryl Bickham.

She is survived by her son, Ed Bickham and wife Carolyn Marks Bickham, two grandchildren Lon Edwin Bickham and Joanna Felts Bickham.

She was a loving mother and traveled the world with her husband who was a construction piping superintendent.

Services will be private. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 2164, Suffolk, VA 23432.

MAUDE EFFLER TRUMP

Maude Effler Trump, 87, went to be with the Lord April 30, 2011. She was the daughter of Rhodila and Carmen Effler. She was predeceased by her husband Hersey Wade Trump, Jr.

Maude lived a simple but meaningful life. From her childhood years in Tennessee to her adult years in Virginia, her determination and desire to persevere allowed her to overcome many of life's challenges.

Maude was one who believed in Jesus Christ, held His promises in her honest and good heart and had much good fruit as a result. Anyone who knew Maude loved her and in this day and age, that's fruit. She was a member of Lebanon Christian Church in Newport News.

Maude will be greatly missed by her son, Rev. H. Wade Trump, III, her daughter-n-law, Lisa and three grandchildren, Christopher, Mitchell and Jessica.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon, Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in Holly Lawn cemetery. Family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory from 11 to 11:45 Tuesday morning.

MARY ANN WORRELL

Mary Ann Worrell, 82, passed away March 16, 2011 surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Walter Jacob Poore, Sr. and Alice Roberta Rhoades Poore. She was the widow of George Lee Worrell, Jr. and was predeceased by three brothers Jimmy Poore, Charles K. Poore, and Marshall Poore.

Born in Elkton, Maryland in 1928, Mrs. Worrell retired from Lipton Tea Co. after 35 years. She was an active member of Holy Neck Christian Church for 64 years and a member of the Ladies' Fellowship as well as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Volunteer Fire Department. She enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Lewis and her husband, John, of Suffolk; son, Walter Lee Worrell and wife, Barbara, of Suffolk; sister, Alice Marie Bramble of Elkton, MD; brother, Walter J. Poore, Jr. of Hacks Point, MD; five grandchildren, John H. Lewis, Jr., Patty A. Freeman, Ashley Nicole Worrell, Laura Lee Worrell, Brigette Bresnahan; three great grandchildren, Dailey Lewis, Heather Lewis, Brittany Turner.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 2:30 pm in Holy Neck Christian Church by the Rev. Dr. Drew Mountcastle and the Rev. Dolan Talbert with burial at the church's cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA, on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 7 to 8:30 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. CLAYTON E. HENDERSON

Clayton Eugene Henderson died March 5, 2011. He was the son of the late Mary and Dwight Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie Henderson; daughter, Becky Criner and husband Todd of Suffolk; two sisters and one brother of Lewiston, IL; five grandchildren, Danielle Atkins, Mary Curran, Jennifer and Zack Campbell and Mason Criner and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, VA.

Mrs. Virginia Edgerton Newcomb Holloway
October 10, 1914 - November 11, 2003

Mrs. Virginia Edgerton Newcomb Holloway, age 89 of South Hill, died Tuesday, November 11, 2003 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was the widow of S. Manuel Newcomb and D. H. 'Doc' Holloway and was predeceased by a grandson John Manuel Bevell. She is survived by two daughters Rebecca N. Bevell of Goldsboro, NC and Carolyn N. Powell and her husband Jasper of South Hill; a sister Hope E. Wills of Stanhope, NJ; five grandchildren Lorenda B. Overman and husband Harrell, Dale W. Bevell and wife Laura, Dwayne S. Bevell and fiancée Heather all of Goldsboro; Andrea M. Wilson, Matthew C. Wilson and wife Karen all of Little Rock AR; a step grandson Robert Powell and wife Peggy of South Hill; five great grandchildren Beth, Betsy and Dave Overman, Ryan and Joshua Bevell all of Goldsboro; A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at First Baptist Church in South Hill with interment in Woodland cemetery in Chase City. An Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:00 P. M. Wednesday to which the public is invited at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home followed by a visitation until 8:30 P. M. The family will be at her residence 622 N. Brunswick Avenue. SHIRLEY ANN BABB

Shirley Ann Babb, 73, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, went to be with the Lord February 28, 2011 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. She was the daughter of the late George Smith and Anne Boone, and the widow of Clarence Lee Babb, Sr. Shirley was a long time member of Wilroy Baptist Church, and worked as a Pharmacy Associate for Rx 4 Less.

Survivors include her sons, Clarence L. Babb, Jr. and wife, Judy, of Raleigh, NC, Wayne Babb and wife, Susan, of Suffolk; daughter, Teresa Roberson and husband, John, of Suffolk; grandchildren, April L. Cutchins, Christopher K. Babb, Justin R. Babb, Daniel H. Roberson; six great grandchildren; sister, Barbara O'Neal and husband, Richard; and brother, William Boone and wife, Vonda.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Wilroy Baptist Church, 306 Williams Road, Suffolk, VA, 23434 by the Rev. Timothy Rawls with burial at Cypress Chapel Christian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Wilroy's Awanas, 306 Williams Road, Suffolk, VA, 23434.

VERLIE E. ASKEW

Verlie Edith Askew, 62, went to be with the lord February 23, 2011 at her home in Monroe, NC. She is the daughter of the late Lillie and William Butler.

She is survived by her husband Donnie Askew of Monroe, NC.

A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 25, 2011 at 2 PM in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by Pastor Denis L. Hughes.

RUTH WILLIAMS KILEY

On Friday, January 14, Ruth Williams Kiley passed away at home with her husband and children at her bedside.

She was born on August 25, 1950 in Suffolk, Virginia to Nancy Ruth and Thaddeus Thomas Williams. She graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Connecticut. In 1972, she married Edmund I. Kiley, a career officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. Together, they lived in coastal cities and towns across the United States: Kodiak Island, Alaska; Newport, Rhode Island; Laguna Vista, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; Washington, D.C.; and Bainbridge Island, Washington. She is survived by her mother, her husband, her three children (Brendan, Conor, and Caitlin Kiley), and her three sisters (Debbie Chappell, Betty Manzi, and Jean Reilly). Ruth was actively involved in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the Bainbridge Island school system. Family and friends remember her fondly for her quick wit, sharp intelligence, strong opinions, and relentlessness on the tennis court and at the bridge table.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, January 27 at Bethlehem Christian Church. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mrs. Doris Quinn Griffith
April 22, 1919 - October 17, 2003

Mrs. Doris Quinn Griffith, age 84 of South Hill, died Friday, October 17, 2003 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was the widow of Robert A. 'Doodle' Griffith and is survived by her son and his wife John R. and Gwen Griffith of Roanoke; two sisters Irma Wolfe of Greenville, NC and Anne Caliguiri of Rimersburg, PA; a brother Leroy Quinn of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren Robyn Griffith of Manassas and Kevin Griffith of Baltimore, MD.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Sunday at Oakwood cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 422 South Hill, VA 23970 or the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

CONNIE LEE ANDERSON

Connie Lee Anderson, 62, passed away peacefully January 13th in her home; She was the daughter of Ruth Vanhoose and the late William Morris Cecil.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Anderson. Survivors include; Aaron and his wife and two children and Eric and his son . She is also survived by two sisters, two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 18th, at Connie's home 9249 Dixon Drive Suffolk, VA. Please come share in love and appreciation of this wonderfully special woman.

RAYMOND N. MATHIAS, SR.

Raymond Newsome Mathias, Sr., 87, died January 22, 2011. A native of Gates County, NC. He was a son of the late Sally Sue and Henry E. Mathias and was predeceased by his wife Mary Nell Mathias and a son Ray Mathias, Jr. He was a retired meat cutter.

Mr. Mathias was a member of Holland Ruritan Club, Holland Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class and a member of the Brotherhood. He was Chairman of the ushers and served on various committees.

Survivors include a brother, Herbert Mathias of Portsmouth, VA and sister-in-law Doris Gillis of Holland and her daughter Glynda Arrington and her daughter Rebecca Arrington who always put a twinkle in his eyes and a smile on his face and thought of her as his granddaughter. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, 509 West Washington Street, Suffolk, Virginia 23434 by the Rev. Robert Bunn with interment at the Holland cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, January 24, 2011 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

GILMA B. SLADE

Gilma Byrd Slade, 83, passed away January 21, 2011 at Laurels of University Park in Henrico County.

Born in Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late Geta W. and Alvah C. Byrd. Gilma was predeceased by her son, Vernon W. Slade; and sister, Marguerite B. Orcutt. She was also predeceased by her former husband, William A. Slade. Gilma was a lifelong and faithful member of Great Fork Baptist Church, and worked at Norfolk Navy Yard as a typist, and worked at Franklin Paper Company. She started the reading program at Chorey Apartments.

She is survived by her daughters, Lee Slade White and husband, Butch, of Suffolk, Regina Slade Holt, of Richmond; grandchildren, Kelly V. Holt, Dylan Slade Holt, Jason Slade, and Shane Slade; great grandson, Shawn Holt; niece, Susan O. Russo and husband, Matty; grandniece, Marguerite Taylor; and grand nephew, John Russo and family.

A funeral service will be conduct in Great Fork Baptist Church by the Dr. Rev. Donald Ray Jones on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with burial in the church cemetery. The family will received friends in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

EVELYN E. MARKS

Evelyn Eason Marks, 91, died August 11, 2011, at Sentara Princess Anne.

Born in Suffolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Walter Ray and Lillian L. Eason and the widow of Lewis Mason Marks, Jr. Mrs. Marks was a retired elementary school teacher and a member of Community United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach.

Survivors include her daughter, Eva M. Hitch of Virginia Beach; sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis M. and Debby Marks, III, of Virginia Beach, Walter E. and Wanda Marks of Onley, VA; grandchildren, Walter Eason Marks, Jr., wife Jana, Anna M. Thompson, husband Jason, Brian E. Marks, wife Sarah, Luke S. Hitch, Tyler Marks, Kristen Mapp, Amanda Mapp, Ashley Mapp, Rob Mapp; three great grandchildren; brother, Walter Robert Eason of Roanoke, VA; daughter-in-law, Laura Miles of Richmond and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Sentara Home Care Services. Memorial contributions may be made to Home Care Services, 535 Independence Parkway, Suite 500, Chesapeake, VA, 23320.

JASPER C. OUTLAND

Jasper C. (JC) Outland, 86, went home to be with his Lord August 7, 2011. A native of Rich Square, NC, he was the son of the late Johnny Clarence and Sadie Horton Outland. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

He was a wonderful, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend whose smile will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Holloman Outland and daughters, Jennifer Outland and Joyce Ficare.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law John H. and Sherry Outland, son-in-law Pete Ficare, grandson, William C. Holton Jr., granddaughters, Lori Panther Finck, Angela Brandt, Amber Dooley and husband Jason, and Sarah Werth and husband Matt, great-grandsons, Brandon Panther, Drew Marscheider, Brayden Werth, and Maverick Dooley, great-granddaughter, Jenna Holton, nieces Joan Brown, Barbara Storey, Linda Bringman, Carolyn Waters, Beverly Mayer, and nephew Billy Outland.

A memorial service will be held August 9, 2011 at Hillcrest Baptist Church at 11 o’clock by Rev. Jim George with burial at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home and Crematory Monday from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Mr. Joseph Lee Howell
July 19, 1919 - November 5, 2003

Mr. Joseph Lee Howell, age 84, of South Hill, passed away Wednesday, November 5th in McGuire's V.A. Hospital in Richmond. He was the owner/operator of the Southside Mattress Factory, a World War ll Navy veteran and a Pearl Harbor Survivor.

Mr. Howell is survived by his wife, Luvenia Clark Howell of South Hill; four daughters, Linda Grey of Sierra Leone, Africa, Brenda Ferguson of Richmond, Carla Howell of Centerville, VA. and Stephnie McCullan of Falls Church. One son, Kenneth Howell of Cedar Park, Texas; one sister, Dorothy Shirley of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren and 2 stepdaughters.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, November 9th at 2:00 o'clock p.m. in the Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 8th from 7:00 till 8:30 p.m. at the Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home.
