LAWRENCEVILLE - Vivian S. Brown died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Community Memorial Health-center, South Hill. She was a daughter of the late William Sydnor and Julia E. Puryear Sydnor, born in Brunswick County on Feb. 3, 1918.

Robert Epps Lewis

Robert Epps Lewis, age 78, of Alberta passed away Dec. 3, 2003. He was retired from Virginia Power with 35 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Annie Ellis Lewis; a daughter Marjorie L. Sharpe and husband, Calvin of Victoria; a son, Robert Epps Lewis, Jr. and wife Brenda of Keysville; four granddaughters, Sarah and Laura Sharpe, Stephanie L. Wilmouth and husband Robert of Beaverdam, and Tabitha L. Kean and husband Jonathan of Wyllesburg; four great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Allison, Rebecca and Robert, III Wilmouth; and a sister, Alfreda L. Moore and husband Norman of Portsmouth.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 6, 12 noon at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove Methodist Church, 6457 Grandy Rd., Brodnax, Va. 23920.

Florence T. Parrish

Mrs. Florence Thompson Parrish, age 73 of La Crosse, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003. She was the widow of Lewis Parrish and is survived by three daughters Judy Parrish of La Crosse, Becky Hite of Danville and Dorothy Mason of Lawrenceville; a son Otis Parrish of Warfield; two sisters Becky Taylor of Richmond and Nell Luke of Langley, South Carolina; two brothers Peter C. Thompson of La Crosse and L. K. Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida; eight grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Church of God in South Hill with interment in Canaan cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home.

Indie Jones Rhodes

Indie Jones Rhodes, 91, died on Feb. 3, 2004 in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Indie was born in Brunswick County, Sept. 28, 1912. She and her late husband made their home in Miami and St. Augustine Fla. After a few years in Bella Vista, Ark. she moved with her daughter to Kennesaw, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter A. Rhodes and by her sisters, Mable Crickenbarger, Louise Tolar, Ophelia Child, Margaret Richardson, Agnes Palmer and by brothers Wesley McAden Jones and Robert Rivers Jones, all of Diamond Grove Farm of Virginia.

Indie is survived by her children, son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Alice Rhodes of Crestview, Fla., and her daughter and son-in-law, Dusty and Glen Stockman of Kennesaw, Ga.; grandchildren, James J Rhodes of Biloxi, Miss., Robert and Sandy Rhodes of Niceville, Fla., Indie and Stacey Smith of Marietta, Ga. and Sandie and Bill Zeigler of Palm City, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Grant, Madison and Lane Smith of Marietta Ga., Easton and McKenna Zeigler of Palm City, Fla.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church in Brodnax

John Henry Hatchell

John Henry Hatchell died early Feb. 4, 2004 after a long illness. He was born March 8, 1927 in Richmond. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Blackstock Hatchell; his mother, Mary Evans Hatchell; and his father, Philip Lacy Hatchell. Mr. Hatchell retired from Dan River, Inc., Danville and was employed as a boiler operator. He was a United States Navy veteran and resided in Richmond since his retirement in 1989.

Willie Mae Barner

Willie Mae Barner died March 26, 2004 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was born Feb. 14, 1913 to the late Rev. Charlie H. and Mary Vergie Love.

She is survived by five daughters, Ethel Canady (R.J.), Pauline Harrison (Thomas), Mae Whitfield (Johnny) all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Annie Mason (John) of Valentines and Mary Barner (Elijah) of Irvington, N.J.; three sons, Rubin Barner Charles Barner both of Lawrenceville, and Thomas Barner (Bernice) of LaCrosse; 31 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 3 from Salem Union RZUAChurch, Gasburg. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Brown's Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Meredith Bryce Ezell

BLACKSTONE - Mr. Meredith Bryce Ezell, age 58, of Blackstone died April 1, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Blackstone; three daughters, Pamela E. Barlow and Malinda E. Baldwin both of Crewe and Monica E. Scholfield of Blackstone. Also surviving are four brothers, William Ezell of Brodnax, Jimmy Ezell of La Crosse, Hugo Ezell ad Doak Ezell both of South Hill; three sisters, Ann Rogers and Vivian Bracey both of Brodnax and Alice bing of Baskerville; and five grandchildren, Kristina and Tyler Barlow, Steven and Cody Baldwin and Lexy Schofield.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 5 at Farrar Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in Crestview Memorial Park. Memorial considerations may be directed to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216. Farrar Funeral Home of South Hill was in charge of the arrangements.

Christopher Grant

Christopher Grant died March 25, 2004 in the Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. He was the son of Dorothy T. Grant and the late Joseph W. Grant Jr. and was born Sept. 30.

He was educated in the Brunswick County Public School System.

He is survived by one son, Tre'vel Reid; mother, Dorothy Grant; one sister, Samantha Singleton of Brodnax; two brothers, Stephen and Timothy, both of Alberta; one brother-in-law, James Singleton; three aunts; three uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 2 from Brown's Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in the Mount Pleasant RZUA Church cemetery, Alberta.

Brown's Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Hezekiah Green Sr.

Mr. Robert Hezekiah Green Sr. died March 25, 2004 in Baltimore, Md. He was born on June 4, 1927 to the late Chester Robert Green and Carue Powell .

He is survived by his wife, Edith H. Green; daughters, Connie Miles (Richard), Celest Burrell (Donald), Cynthia Monk, Carolyn Wallace (Robert) and Cora Green-Berry (John); sons, Robert H. Greene Jr. (Mary), Wendell J. Green, Arthur H. Green (Sandy), Samuel Green (Natalie) and Monroe Tyler (Joyce); three brothers; three sisters; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 31 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 1, at Poplar Mount Baptist Church, Lawrenceville. Interment followed in the Greentown Family cemetery, Lawrenceville.

Brown's Funeral Service in Lawrenceville was in charge of the arrangements.

Tyron Davis Hicks Jr.

Tyron Davis Hicks Jr. died March 28, 2004 at Southside Virginia Regional Medical Center, Emporia. He was born Sept. 30, 2004 to Tyron Davis Hicks Sr. and Elisha Monique Hicks.

He is survived by his parents, Tyron and Elisha Hicks of Lawrenceville; one sister, MaRisha L. Smith, Lawrenceville; grandparents, Charles Smith Sr. and Ina Smith of Lawrenceville and Doris Hicks of Alberta; two great-grandmothers, Rev. Ina Owen of Freeman and Jessie Hicks of Alberta; godparents, Robert and Lisa Hicks of Rawlings; aunt, Katina Smith of Lawrenceville; seven uncles, Jeffrey Owen (Renita) of Lawrenceville, Tom Hicks Jr. of Alberta, VA, Charles Smith Jr. (Bernice) of Dolphin, Joseph Hicks, John Hicks and Christopher Hicks, all of Alberta; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 4 from Union Bethel RZUA Church, Freeman. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Henry Lewis

Henry Lewis died March 28, 2004 in the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center, Emporia. He was born Nov. 24, 1923 to the late Sam and Lollie.

He is survived by two sons, Warren and Michael, both of Richmond; one daughter, Deborah Walker (Timothy) of Chesterfield; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Lenora Kelly (Pelham) and Louise, all of Freeman; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 2 from Brown's Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church cemetery, Freeman.

Nancy R. Mickie

Nancy R. Mickie died March 28, 2004 in Detroit, Mich. She was born Jan. 22, 1917 to the late Seymore Ruffin and Sadie Walker-Ruffin.

She is survived by her family, John (Joyce) Ruffin, Myrtle (Eugene) Johnson, Robert Mickie, Edith Goode, Darryl, Marchell, Kevin and Eleshiea Goode, Anita and Lamont Johnson, Teresa (Henry) Cabil, Kathy, Robin, Manny, Kenneth Morrison, Antonio, Sade, Donte, Kaila, Francisco, Victoria and Diego Goode, Lorraine Bright Cherry and a host of other nieces, nephews, family, extended family and friends.

Funeral services were held April 3 from Brown's Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in the Jones Family cemetery, Lawrenceville.

Mary Ellen Shrader

Mary Ellen Shrader, 61, of Roanoke, departed this life on Saturday, March 27, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Rufus Harry Mewborn and Mae Gill Mewborn of South Hill. She felt the most important achievement in her life was the raising of her two wonderful children, Heather and Mark. She received her degree in Science Education from James Madison College and a masters degree from Virginia Tech. She was a science teacher at Andrew Lewis Middle School and Salem High School. As a teacher, she was awarded the lifetime PTA membership. She was a member at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church of Roanoke, where she was a Stephen Minister. She is survived by her children, David Marshall "Mark" Shrader of Christiansburg, and Heather Marie Shrader of Roanoke; one sister and brother-in-law, Yvonne and Douglas Bugg of South Hill; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley Warren and Rita Mewborn of Williamsburg, and Rufus Harry and Phyllis Mewborn of Franklin; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was held at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1831 Grandin Rd., SW, Roanoke, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30. In keeping with her love of nature, Mary Ellen hopes that her friends would plant a tree in her honor, in a place of their choosing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mary Ellen Shrader Scholarship Fund at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. Oakey's South Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jake Robert Panther

Mr. Jake Robert Panther, age 92 of South Hill, died May 28, 2004. He was a retired farmer and is survived by his wife of 68 years Nellie Edmonds Panther; three daughters, Christine Hite and husband Julius of South Hill, Bettie Goode of Moseley and Myrtle Seay of Newport News; three sons, Frank and wife Marie Panther of Altamont Springs, Fla., Jimmie and wife Barbara of South Hill, Jake Jr. and wife Cathy Panther of Chase City; 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and six step grandchildren. A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Oakwood cemetery, South Hill.

Ida Della B. Lassiter

Mrs. Ida Della Brooks Lassiter of 1055 Gills Mountain Rd., Virgilina died Monday, May 24, 2004 at Meadowview Terrace in Clarksville at the age of 94.

Mrs. Lassiter was born in Halifax County on February 12, 1910 and was married to the late Mr. Jarrious Cornelious Lassiter Sr. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Virgilina.

Mrs. Lassiter is survived by two sons, Mr. Jarrious C. Lassiter Jr. of South Hill and Mr. Marshall Lassiter of Virgilina; two foster sons, Mr. James T. Lassiter of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mr. Joe Lassiter of Virgilina; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Frances Lassiter, Mrs. Priscilla B. Lassiter and Mrs. Ann Lassiter; one brother-in-law, Mr. Robert Lassiter of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Lou Tuck of Oxford, N.C., and Mrs. Ruth Crawley of Emporia; 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Virgilina with Reverend Lorenzo Love officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were by Jeffress Funeral Home, 2000 North Main Street, South Boston.

Carlton Estes Robertson

Mr. Carlton Estes Robertson, 84, of Hampton and formerly of South Hill, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 in a Raleigh, N. C. hospital. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired civil servant with Norfolk Naval Air Station, and a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Hampton. He was a good man and is remembered best as a loving husband and father and a steadfast friend.

Mr. Robertson was married to Edna Woodall Robertson for 58 years. She passed away in May of 2002. He is survived by two daughters, Elaine R. Baldini of Mercer Island, Wash. and Virginia R. Gamble of Portland, Ore.; a son, Carlton E. Robertson Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Cleveland Hall of South Hill; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in La Crosse cemetery.

Carolyn Rose (Pearce) Casey

Carolyn Rose (Pearce) Casey, 62 of St. Petersburg, Fla., died July 18, 2004 at Bayfront Medical Center.

She lived most of her life in South Hill until 1999 when she moved to St. Petersburg. She was a child care provider.

She is survived by her children, Rita and Dan Colleli of St. Petersburg, Fla., Denise and Harvey Parham of Petersburg, Michael Casey of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Timothy and April Casey of Alaska; three sisters, Elizabeth Barker of Hopewell, Mary Finch of Mechanicsville, and Brenda Rogers of South Hill.

She will me missed as Grandma Rose by her four grandchildren. She is also survived by other family members in the area.

A memorial service was held at the Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.
