Dorothy Singleton Booth

Dorothy Singleton Booth, 83, of 3183 Plum Branch Road, Concord passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born March 28, 1919 in Concord Depot, she was the daughter of the late John Will Singleton and Annie Pearl Riley Singleton. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Concord, a former member of the Seven Hills Art Club and the Concord Garden Club. She loved flowers and arranged the flowers for her church for many years.

Mrs. Booth was preceded in death by her 1st husband Ryland Phelps and by her 2nd husband Lyle Booth.

Mrs. Booth is survived by: three children; Kenneth Phelps and wife Andrea of Concord, Janice Eubank Minor and husband Charlie of Lynchburg and Audrey Britt and husband Richard of Concord, seven grandchildren; Rhonda Eubank, Larry Eubank, David Phelps, Chris Phelps, Drew Britt, Tyler Britt and Lauren Britt, three great grandchildren Erika McCay, Dakota Eubank and Matthew Phelps, one brother; Clyde Singleton of Concord.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 28, 2002 at Calvary Baptist Church, Concord with the Reverend Frank Casper officiating. Private interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:30-8 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, and at other times at the family home.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the flower committee of Calvary Baptist Church, .PO Box 165, Concord, VA 24538.

Vikki Lynne Valentine

Vikki Lynne Valentine, 32, of Lynchburg, died Monday March 22, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Chad Valentine.

Born October 18, 1971 in Pontiac, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Larry William Worley, her mother, Patricia Beebe Buxton and step-father, Tommy Buxton of Raleigh, NC. survive her.

Vikki was a respiratory therapist with Centra Health of Lynchburg.

Also surviving are her children, Brittany Marie Falls, Kristofer Anthony “Tony” Viar, William Andrew “Willie” Viar, and Ethan Paul Valentine; a brother, William “Bill” Pash; a sister, Edith “Edy” Worley; nieces and nephew, Bethany Worley, Derek Jones, Hailey Valentine, and Kylee Hise; her best friend, Kristy Deaton, and numerous extended family members.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday March 26, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by Pastor Wayne Lanham, with burial to follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Linda Burks Fitzpatrick

Linda Burks Fitzpatrick surrendered her vibrant soul March 12, 2006 at the age of 54. She is the beloved wife of James E. Fitzpatrick, III, and the wonderful mother of three children she loved and treasured with all her heart. The oldest is Susan Renee Ramsey Bryan and her husband, Christopher Bryan and cherished granddaughter, Reagan McKinleigh Bryan; then her son James Edward Fitzpatrick, IV, and his fiancée, Jennifer Wisch, and her youngest Jonathan Stuart Fitzpatrick, all of Amherst.

Linda started her career at age 15 working for Winn-Dixie and rose thru the ranks to head cashier. Later she would join Kings Supermarkets in Amherst where she would become the first woman co-manager in the chain of stores. She then moved to the corporate staff as Director of Security and Internal Audit. Linda would join her future husband in a chain of six grocery stores spun off from the Kings chain. She pioneered a manual retail inventory control system for small retailers and was recognized for her efforts by the Virginia Food Dealers Association. She would go on to found Amherst Accounting Service in 1982 as a service organization for retail stores. With her drive and spirit, the organization was able to blossom under her able management. During all this she found the time to be a wonderful wife and loving mother. She lived her life for her family, and still managed to be an astute businesswoman. Everything she did, she did with a big heart, and such great passion.

Linda is the daughter of Roy Burks and Alma Alene Burks who both predeceased her. She is also survived by her three sisters Margaret Lawhorne and husband, Wayne, of Vinton, Lynnette Moore and husband, Randy, of Charlottesville, Ellen Hannah and husband, Randy, of Evington and a brother Roger D. Burks and wife, Elsie, of Amherst.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. John F. Pyle. Interment will take place in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Walter Douglas Wood

Walter Douglas Wood, passed away on Weds., Oct. 25, 2006 after a long illness. “W.D.” or “Woody” as he was known to friends and family is survived by an extended and blended family. He is survived by a daughter, April Green; two sons, Kenneth Wood and his wife Laura, and Kevin Wood and his wife Carolyn; their mother Barbara Wallace, and her son Timothy Wallace and his wife Stephanie, and daughter Karen Wallace; two grandsons, Russell Rokes and Matthew Wood; one granddaughter Sarah Green; one great grandson, Parker Rokes, three nieces, Donna Baily, Donna Tucker, and Stacy Arthur, and three nephews, John Clark, Mike Clark and Glen Peak. A memorial service will be held on Mon., Oct. 30, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at the Madison Heights Christian Church, 149 Main Street, Madison Heights, VA 24572 officiated by the Rev. Paul Land. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the church would be appreciated.

Rosser Monroe Hedrick

Rosser Monroe Hedrick, 82, of 738 Poor House Road, Rustburg, passed away, July 23, 2002 at his home.

Born May 1, 1920 in Campbell County, he was the son of the late Johnny Monroe Hedrick and Emma Motley Hedrick. He was a retired farmer and had served with the ARMY during WWII. Mr. Hedrick was a member of Rustburg Baptist Church, Ruritan Club and the Rustburg Fire Dept.

Mr. Hedrick is survived by: his wife of 51 years; Louise Palmateer Hedrick, two daughters; Sharon Creasy and fiancé Mark Harman of Evington and Sandra Brooks and husband Roy of Long Island, a grandson; Brian Creasy of Evington, three brothers; Grover Hedrick and Adelay Hedrick both of Lynchburg and Morgan Hedrick of Altavista, a sister; Betty Childress of Patterson, NJ

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday July 26, 2002, at the Cumbie Family cemetery by the Reverend Stephen Byrd.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel, and at other times at the family home.

Myrtle Roberts Burch

Myrtle Roberts Burch, 92, of 126 Crestview Drive, Madison Heights, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 in Autumn Care of Altavista. She was the wife of the late John Willie Burch.

Born June 27, 1910 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Henry and Bessie Rhodes Roberts. Mrs. Burch was a retired clerk with Lynchburg Foundry with thirty years of service and was a member of Sandy Bottom Christian Church, where she was the organist for more than seventy years.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Calvin Burch and Alvin "Sonny" Burch; one grandson, Jerry Lee Burch; one son-in-law, Walter Coleman, Jr.; three brothers, William H. Roberts, Joseph Roberts, and Arthur "Sam" Roberts and two sisters, Alma Stewart and Helen Roberts.

Mrs. Burch is survived by two daughters, E. Darlene Coleman and her husband, Cecil and Barbara Coleman; one brother, Melvin Roberts and his wife, Shelvy, all of Madison Heights; two sisters, Hazel Reichard, also of Madison Heights and Janice Viar of Cloverdale; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Sandy Bottom Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Freeman and Assistant Pastor Tommy McBride, officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7- 9:00 p.m. Thursday at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

Pattie Bradley Joyner

Pattie Bradley Joyner, 70, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, March 22, 2004 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born July 17, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Reuben Bradley and Pattie Belle Jordan Bradley.

A son, Carroll Lee Joyner and a sister preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth E. Joyner and her fiancé Sam Lane of Lynchburg; three sons, Bobby Ray Joyner of Lynchburg, K. Lynn Joyner of Lynchburg and Albert R. Joyner and his wife Kristen of Whitakers, NC; three brothers, Luther Bradley and his wife Emma of Rocky Mount, NC, Lewis Bradley and his wife Hazel and Daniel Bradley, both of Whitakers, NC; two sisters, Madge B. Miller of Enfield, NC and Mamie Joyner of Rocky Mount, NC; five grandchildren, Jackie Joyner of Wilson, NC, Chris Lane of Lynchburg, Mike Joyner of Whitakers, NC, Ashley Lane of Lynchburg and Ernest Joyner of Wilson, NC, other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Reverend Mike Joyner.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and at other times at the residence of Mrs Elizabeth Joyner 207 Euclid Ave. Lynchburg, VA. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the American Cancer Society.

Ruby Pribble Moses

Ruby Pribble Moses, 75, of Rustburg, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at her home. She is survived by her husband, Clarence S. Moses, Sr.

She was born August 3, 1928 in Evington, the daughter of the late Atwell Lee and Ella Jane Pribble. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and had retired from the Central Virginia Training School after many years of employment.

In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Siratirs J. Mason; her 2nd husband, James J. Conson; a son, Donnie Lee Mason; and by four brothers and one sister.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Orlando Mason and wife Vicki and Wendell Mason and wife Violet both of Concord; three step-children, Wanda Snowden and husband Hervey and Clarence S. Moses, Jr., and wife Beverly both of Lynchburg and Roger Lee Moses and wife Ann of Rustburg; a daughter-in-law, Donna Schaefer and husband Norman of Charlotte, NC; a brother, Douglas M. Pribble and wife Carol of Rustburg; a sister, Sadie E. Pribble of Lynchburg; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 23, 2004 at Salem United Methodist Church, Evington, by Rev. Charles Schooler and Rev. George E. Kridell, Sr. Interment will follow in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery, Evington.

Family visitation will be Thursday from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Orlando and Vicki Mason at 466 Westveiw Circle, Thomas Terrace.

Memorial contributions may be made to either New Chapel Baptist Church, Hwy. 606, Rustburg, VA 24588 or Salem United Methodist Church, Rt. 24, Evington, VA 24550.

Willie Clinton "Jack" Driskill

Willie Clinton "Jack" Driskill, 76, of Lynchburg, departed this life on Sat., Nov. 13, 2004. For 57 years, he was the husband of his beloved wife Judy Thompson Driskill. She departed her life on Dec. 1, 2003.

Born October 2, 1928 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Norman Edward Driskill and the late Sally Rice Driskill. He was a member of Forest Road United Methodist Church and had retired from Lynchburg Westover Dairy after 35 yrs. of employment.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Buford Lee Driskill, Charlie Driskill, Edward “Jiggs” Driskill, Alec “Buck” Driskill, James “Pete” Driskill and Curtis Driskill; and by three sisters, Gladys Mace, Mary Francis and Sallie Carrico.

He is survived by three sons, Jack E. Driskill and wife Susan of Lake Jackson, TX, Barry N. Driskill and wife Donna of Forest and David G. Driskill of Hebron, KY; two daughters, Joan D. Moyer and husband Ronnie of Shipman and Linda Kay D. Ferry and husband John R. Ferry, Jr., of Lynchburg; a brother, Wyatt “Booney” Driskill; a sister, Elizabeth Matthews; nine grandchildren, Jason Driskill, Kristina Driskill, Julie Moyer, Jared Moyer, Alison Pettit, Ashley Reynolds, John R. Ferry, III, Bryan Ferry and Lauren Ferry; four great grandchildren, Kyle Winter, Jason Regan, Haley Driskill and Sarah Pettit; one great, great granddaughter, Aubrey Irene Regan; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, Nov. 15, 2004 at Timberlake United Methodist Church by Rev. Larry Davies. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Family visitation will be today from 6 – 8 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Timberlake United Methodist Church, 21649 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502.

Aileen W. Cooper

Aileen W. Cooper, 99, of Madison Heights, died in her sleep at 9:00 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006.

Born January 18, 1907, in Pasadena, CA, she lived at 158 West Briar Place since April 1993, when she moved from Pasadena where she lived for 30 years after moving to New York.

In 1927, she married Mario Cooper, N. A., A. W. C., the world famous magazine illustrator and international, American watercolorist of New York City, who wrote six published books on watercolor, is now deceased.

She was an accomplished artist in oil paints, ceramics, jewelry and other art media. She attended the Chouinard Art Institute in L.A. and studied under Harvey Dunn of the Grand Central School of Art in New York City, where she was in contention as candidate for doing the portraiture of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s wife, Eleanor Roosevelt in 1947 as written up in the Art Section of a N.Y. newspaper.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Cooper, of Long Island, N.Y. and a son, Vincent M. Cooper, of Madison Heights.

Mrs. Cooper’s ashes will be inurned in Mt. View cemetery, in Altadena, CA.

Deanna Marsh Ratliff

Deanna Marsh Ratliff, 46, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006, in Abingdon, Virginia.

Born February 28, 1960, in Lynchburg, Deanna was the daughter of Clyde and Ann Marsh of Lynchburg.

Deanna was preceded in death by her grandparents, Allie L. and Mary Lou Martin of Forks of Buffalo, and Haywood W. and Ann W. Marsh, of Madison Heights.

Deanna is survived by her husband; Richard C. Ratliff of Abingdon, a daughter; Marianne R. Harvey and husband Ben, of Abingdon, two sons; Ian M. Ratliff, and Miles C. Ratliff, both of Abingdon, a brother; Clyde E. Marsh, Jr., of Lynchburg, and her mother and father-law; Curtis and Ellie Ratliff, of Abingdon, and many close friends.

Deanna was the owner and operator of Michelle’s Bridal Shop in Abingdon. She was the sunshine of our life and loved all who knew her.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, October 30, 2006, at Whitten Park Ave. Chapel, with Pastor Wayne Hudson, officiating. Interment will follow in Presbyterian cemetery.

A special thanks to Kay Woody, Doris Raines, and Evelyn Hudson, for their love and support.

Atwill Ray Powell

Atwill Ray Powell, 58, formerly of Forest, passed away, July 23, 2002 in the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Salem.

Born September 9, 1943 in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Atwill Thomas Powell and Clara Marsh Powell. He was a retired security guard with Richmond Security Service and served with the U. S. Air Force in England.

Mr. Powell is survived by: one daughter, Vicky F. Brodie and husband Scott of Lynchburg; two sons, Brian W. Powell, and wife Gala also of Lynchburg and Michael R. Powell of Roanoke and two grandchildren, Scottie Brodie and Lacey Ellen Brodie.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday July 25, 2002, at Timberlake Baptist Church by Pastor Larry Brodie. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
