Glenda Steiner Watkins

Glenda Steiner Watkins, 64, of Lynchburg, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert Hatcher Watkins, Jr. who passed away in 1999.

Born January 1, 1939 in Washington, D.C. she was the daughter of the late Glenn Steiner and Hazel Michael Steiner, who survives, of Berkeley Springs, WV. For 11 years she was employed at the Lynchburg Public Library and prior to that was employed at the Morgan County (WV) Commission on Aging. She was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, 50 Plus Ministries, God’s Chosen Women and the Lynchburg Art Club.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Watkins is survived by: a daughter; Cynthia McCarty and husband Craig of Monroe, three sons; Darrell J. Davids and wife Patty of Hedgesville, WV, Jeffrey M. Davids and wife Angela of Falling Waters, WV and Joseph M. Davids and wife Stephanie of Lynchburg, nine grandchildren, one great grandson and a sister: Patricia Leighty and husband Richard of Clearville, PA.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 16, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Jim Moon and the Reverend Gil Brightson. Interment will follow in Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery, Rustburg.

Friends and family may visit from 7 – 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the family home at 4612 Ferncliff Dr., Lynchburg.

Margaret Jean Tucker France

Margaret Jean Tucker France, 60, of Newport News and formerly of Lynchburg, died Monday July 12, 2004 in Riverside Hospital, Newport News.

Born April 7, 1944 in Nathalie, VA., she was a daughter of the late Troy Douglas Tucker and the late Mary Louise Martin Tucker.

Margaret’s career in banking spanned over 40 years, from the early years in Lynchburg with Central Fidelity, thru B.B.& T. University, to Business Service Administrator with B.B.& T. in Newport News; she was also a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

She is survived by her four children, Ellen France Ragland of Charlottesville, Whitney Elaine France-Hall of Manassas, Lauren Ashley France of Athens, Ga., and Mark Allen France and his fiancee’ Amy Porter of St. Augustine, FL.; a brother, J. Michael Tucker and wife Pam Tucker of Palmyra; five sisters, Elaine T. Powell and husband Marion Powell of Charlottesville, Gail T. Mayberry and husband Wayne Mayberry of Lynchburg, Dianne T. Wright and husband Kenneth “Pete” Wright of Staunton, Janet T. Allen and husband David Allen of Millersville, Md., Joanne T. Rash of Charlottesville; four granddaughters, Meghan, Emily, Jordan, and Loren; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and an uncle also survive.

A funeral service and celebration of Margaret’s life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday July 20, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Dr. James E. Moon officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Gary Lee Dalton

Gary Lee Dalton, 41, of Madison Heights, died Friday, November 12, 2004 in Lynchburg General Hospital following a long illness.

Born March 30, 1963 in Lynchburg, he was the son of Shirley Bowling Dalton of Lynchburg and the late Cooper Charlie Dalton, Sr. Gary attended Thomas Terrace Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, Gary is survived by one son, Cody Dale Jamerson of Madison Heights; three sisters, Becky Dalton Craig and her husband, Jerry of Bedford, Debra Dalton of Lynchburg, and Annie D. Hunter and her husband, John W. of Concord; one brother, Cooper “J.R.” Dalton and his wife, Diane of Lynchburg; two special cousins, David Dalton of Russia and Arthur Willis of Lynchburg and four special nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Thomas Terrace Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Grooms. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant U.M. Church cemetery, Amherst County.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the home of his mother, 2600 Loraine Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Monelison Rescue Squad or the Concord Rescue Squad.

Thomas Edward "Tom" Lewis, Sr.

Thomas Edward "Tom" Lewis, Sr., 82, of Monroe, died Friday, March 10, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Charlene Campbell Lewis. Born February 22, 1924 in Amherst County, he was one of ten children born to the late Thomas Jefferson and Robbie Alice Mays Lewis. Tom worked in the construction business before his retirement, then maintained the Thornton family farm in Amherst County for a number of years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Thomas E. Lewis, Jr. and wife Teresa of Rustburg, Terry W. Lewis of Concord, and Simon L. Lewis and wife Sue of Evington; one daughter, Peggy Lewis of Richmond; one sister, Joanne L. Pillow and husband Ray of Nashville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his eight brothers and sisters, including Sherman O. Lewis. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006 in Presbyterian cemetery, with the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 16. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at his son Tom's home, 575 Wilderness Road, Rustburg. Contributions may be made to the needs of Mrs. Lewis, c/o of any family member or at the funeral home.

Dorothy Stanley Tomlinson

Dorothy Stanley Tomlinson, 81, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at Avante Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Myers Osby Tomlinson, Sr.

Born November 4, 1924 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Clayton Davidson Stanley and Minnie Childress Stanley. She was a retired machine operator with Joan & Jay Manufacturing Company with fifty-one years of service. Mrs. Tomlinson was of Baptist faith.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Stanley.

Mrs. Tomlinson is survived by three sons, Myers O. Tomlinson, Jr. and his wife, Teresa, William A. Tomlinson, and Terry L. Tomlinson, all of Lynchburg; two daughters, Hilda T. Evans, also of Lynchburg and Sandra T. Coleman and her husband, Steve of Panama City, FL; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at noon (12:00 p.m.) Saturday, October 28, 2006 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2006 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and other times at the residence.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Avante for the wonderful care provided for Mrs. Tomlinson.

Elva Jordan Kersey

Elva Jordan Kersey, 89, formerly of Lynchburg died Monday, April 22, 2002 in Altavista Care Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Huly Herbert Kersey.

Elva was born February 7, 1913 in Campbell County, the daughter of the late Giles Jordan and Bessie Mayberry Jordan. She was a member of Lynchburg Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Powhatan and Evance Jordan and a sister, Frances Jordan.

She is survived by three brothers, Warren Jordan of Rustburg, Oscar Jordan and Melvin R. Jordan of Lynchburg; one sister, Gloria Arthur of Lynchburg and her special family, Rev. Ray & Karla Eure and their family.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Lynchburg Church of Christ, 19550 Leesville Road by the Rev. Ray Eure. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

The family suggests memorials be made to Lynchburg Church of Christ Building or Educational Fund.

Virgie Adams Eggleston

Virgie Adams Eggleston, 90 of Madison Heights, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2005. She was the wife of the late Henry Clay Eggleston.

Born August 29, 1914, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Samuel T. and Lelia Martin Adams.

Mrs. Eggleston was a member of the Madison Heights Baptist Church and was a Sr. Bell Ringer as well as a member of the Keenagers Club. She was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center and Hospital as the chief medical and x-ray technician, and helped pioneer the first PKU tests in infants. She was also a charter member of the American Medical Technicians Association of Virginia and served as secretary on the board.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie A. Ryan and two brothers, James L. Adams and S.T. Adams, Jr.

Survivors include a son, Beverly C. Eggleston and wife Nancy of Lynchburg and a daughter, Bettie A. Jackson of Madison Heights. A brother, Laymond E. Adams and wife Ann of Monroe, a sister, Angeline A. Stevens and husband, Howard of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, Keith C. Eggleston and wife Stephanie, Timothy J. Eggleston and wife Rebecca, Wendy E. Sale and husband Edward, Ronald W. Almond and wife Deborah, Kenneth L. Almond and wife Melea, Tina Almond Cash and husband Ernie and Brenda E. Smith;17 great grandchildren, Jason Eggleston and wife Brandy, Christine Eggleston, Jessica Eggleston, Kaitlin Eggleston, Jeremy Sale, Justin Sale, Travis Sale, Henry Almond and wife Tara, Elizabeth A Roberts and husband Zachary, Nicholas Almond, Lauren Almond, Robert Almond, Chase Almond, Anthony Stinnett, Jennifer Cash, Jennifer S. Archer and Brian Smith; four great-great grandchildren, Trevor Archer, Heaven Smith, Kaleb Stinnett and Hailee Almond, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Tim Madison. Interment will take place in the Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Manson Odell Akers

Manson Odell Akers, 74, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Reynolds Akers.

Born May 02, 1931, in Barren Springs, he was a son of the late Crockett Akers and Mary Crowder Akers. Mr. Akers was a United States Navy Korean conflict veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post 274 .He was retired from P and G. Oil Co. as a truck driver and had also worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Gretna. Mr. Akers was a talented mandolin player and had played with many local blue grass bands.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers; Livingston, Eldridge, Lorenzo and McCarthy Akers, and three sisters; Elizabeth Allen, Ola Stoots and Ednie Akers.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Cathy Akers Edwards and husband, Robbie, of Monroe and a son, Billy Akers and wife, Donna, of Bedford; sister, Kathaleen Newman and husband, Wayne and a sister-in-law, Edna Akers, five grandchildren; Jason and Jamie Akers, Lisa Akers Morrison and husband, Brandon, Lorrie and Lucas Akers, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Bill Evans. Interment will take place in Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery in Pittsylvania County.

The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from 3-5:00 p.m. and at other times at the residence, 1818 Elon Rd., in Madison Heights.

Robert “Bob” Boyd Carter, Sr.

Robert “Bob” Boyd Carter, Sr., 70, of Forest, VA passed away Monday, July 22, 2002 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born August 21, 1931 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Aubrey Randolph Carter and Mary Lake Carter.

Mr. Carter is survived by: five children; Robert B. Carter, Jr. and wife Vivian, Michael A. Carter, Deborah Mannix and husband Joseph, Belinda Glidewell and husband Eddie and Kathy Woodard and husband Mike all of Richmond, three brothers; Ralph D. Carter, James D. Carter and Randolph H. Carter, two sisters; Ida Hudson and Iris McCombie, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a dedicated friend Joann Graybill.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Reverend Clyde E. Dalton, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in New Hope Baptist Church cemetery, Appomattox.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and wish to express special thanks to all the physicians and nurses at Lynchburg General Hospital and all the staff at Lynchburg Dialysis Facility for their excellent care.

Thomas Earl “Tommy” Osborne, Sr.

Thomas Earl “Tommy” Osborne, Sr., 72, of Lynchburg, died Friday July 16, 2004 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Molly Elaine Ratliff Osborne.

Born March 6, 1932 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Henry David Osborne and the late Nancy Patterson Tolley Osborne. In addition, two sisters, Barbara Ann Osborne and Virginia Gaines and three brothers, William S. Osborne, Henry C. Osborne, and Robert L. Osborne also preceded him in death.

Tommy retired as a route manager with L.E. Lichford, Inc. and served 21years with the Army National Guard, retiring as platoon Sergeant 2nd Bn 116th Inf VaARNG.

He is survived by a son, Thomas E. Osborne, Jr. and his wife Frances of Lynchburg; two daughters, Nancy O. Workman and husband Tracy of Lynchburg, and Teresa O. Montgomery and husband Tony of Farnham; two sisters, Lorine Wilkins and Louise Campbell; and two brothers, Edward L. Osborne and Duncan F. “Butch” Osborne all of Lynchburg; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday July 20, 2004, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park, with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Cynthia (Cindy) Lynn Sellers Gallier

Cynthia (Cindy) Lynn Sellers Gallier, 40, of 1719 Izaak Walton Road, Madison Heights, died Friday, November 12, 2004 at her residence. She was the wife of Stanley Wade Gallier for nineteen years.

Born March 8, 1964 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, she was the daughter of Harvey Edward Sellers, Sr. and Patricia Knight Sellers of Amherst. She was a 1983 graduate of Amherst County High School and earned her Associate Degree in Computer Technology from National Business College in 1996. Cindy was a Coach and an active volunteer with the Madison Heights Dixie Youth Softball Assoc. She was a Web Specialist with Genworth Financial with eight years of service and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, Cindy is survived by two daughters, Amanda Lynell Gallier and Jennifer Ann Gallier, both of Madison Heights; one sister, Brenda Sellers Thacker and her husband, Ed of Amherst; two brothers, Harvey (Eddie) Sellers, Jr. and his wife, Angela of Syracuse, NY and Jeff Sellers and his wife, Gena of Lynchburg; her father and mother-in-law, Oscar and Lydia Gallier of Amherst; four nieces, six nephews, four great-nieces, one aunt, and four uncles.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Dave Peters and Dr. Michael Fitzgerald. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

Lilly Frazier Dawson

Lilly Frazier Dawson, 82, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the Springtree Health & Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke. She was the wife of the late Wallace E. Dawson.

Born October 11, 1924 in Botetourt County, she was the daughter of the late Layman Elroy and Betty Myers Frazier. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Charles Courtney Dawson.

Mrs. Dawson is survived by Barbara and Gene Cobb, Karen Jones and family, Elizabeth Culler, Lewis and Nan Stinnette, and Betty Fulcher, all of Lynchburg and her cousin, Beatrice M. Canady of Florida.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2006 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

In keeping with Mrs. Dawson's wishes, there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice.
