Alice Proffitt Crouch

Alice Proffitt Crouch, loving mother and devoted wife, 75 of Madison Heights, passed away Friday, October 8, 2004. She was the wife of the late Ernest Lee Crouch, Sr.

Born May 21, 1929, in Baltimore, MD, she was a daughter of the late Manson Heath Proffitt and Marietta Tenner Proffitt.

In addition to her husband a sister, Kathleen Simpson preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons; Ernest Lee Crouch, Jr. and wife Tammy of Lynchburg, Danny R. Crouch and wife Linda of Lynchburg and Don Alan Crouch and wife Gene of Madison Heights, daughter, Sandra C. Burnley and fiancé Marshall Staton of Lynchburg, two brothers; Manson H. Proffitt and wife Charlotte and Weston J. “Bud” Proffitt, four sisters; Dorothy P. Norvell, Marion Barrs, Joan Martin and Marietta Hartless and husband Junior, six grandchildren; Randy Crouch, Sherman Dale Burnley, Jr., Felicia Burnley, Shane Crouch, Kane Michael Crouch and Alan Staton, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2004 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Claude Melvin Dunaway

Claude Melvin Dunaway, 93, of Lynchburg died Sunday, June 2, 2002. He was the husband of the late Hazel Marie Greer Dunaway.

Born March 24, 1909 in Mappsville, VA, he was the son of the late George F. Dunaway and Lillian Green Dunaway. He retired from Meade Corporation after 31 years of service.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty Alcock and her husband, Alfred of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Michael J. Alcock and Paul T. Alcock and his wife, Mary of Lynchburg and David K. Alcock of Danville; two great grandchildren, Carolyn F. Alcock and Paul T. Alcock, Jr. of Lynchburg; one sister, Helen Parker of Newport News and special friends, Robin Prather, Byron Miles and Laura Mattson.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Jan Weston.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Fairview Christian Church Youth Fund, Hospice of the Hills or the Lynchburg Humane Society.

Crantford Virgil “Andy” Anderson Jr.

Crantford Virgil “Andy” Anderson Jr., 64, of 218 Hans Hill, Madison Heights, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Jeri Kerner Anderson.

Andy was born May 12, 1938, in Appomattox County, the son of Crantford Virgil Anderson Sr. and Virginia Carson Anderson. He was the past owner and founder of Lynchburg Steel and Specialty Company. He attended Lynchburg College, was an Air Force veteran, and was active in community affairs, including formerly serving on the Amherst County Board of Supervisors, Lynchburg College Board of Trustees, Board of Directors of Centra Health, and the Central Virginia Community College Board. He was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, and was an avid fan and supporter of the University of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by a son, Crantford V. “Chip” Anderson III, and a granddaughter, Ashton McKenzie Anderson.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by two sons, Doug B. Anderson and wife, Laurie, of Madison Heights and John M. Anderson and wife, Michelle, of Lynchburg; one daughter, Andrea Anderson Buck and husband, Tracy, of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren, Kristan, Andrew, Alaina, Chase Dakotah, Landon, Trevor, and Jon Douglas; one sister, Diana Ray and husband, Terry, of Lynchburg; his former daughter-in-law, Terri Anderson Gordon of Forest; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, by the Rev. L. Grant Carter III and the Rev. Paul Eure. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, Piedmont Division of the American Heart Association, Monelison Rescue Squad, or make a blood donation to the American Red Cross in his memory.

Robert Lee Williams

Robert Lee Williams, 90, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003 in North Carolina.

Mr. Williams was born September 16, 1912, in Lynchburg, VA, the only child of the late William Arthur and Lola Traylor Williams. He married the former Grace Truman Foster on September 17, 1934.

Mr. Williams enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1932, and was called to active duty in 1940, soon after the beginning of World War II. He was assigned to the Naval Radio Station at Cheltenham, MD, which was responsible for radio communications between Navy headquarters and ships at sea. While at Cheltenham, he rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, heading a team of radio technicians with the responsibility of ensuring the continuous operation of the radio station.

At the end of World War II, Mr. Williams returned to civilian life, but continued his active participation in the Naval Reserve, eventually earning retirement from the Navy. He also returned to college, earning his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from Rutgers University in 1950. Mr. Williams and his family moved to Baltimore in 1955, where he secured a position with Westinghouse as a quality control engineer. He retired from Westinghouse in 1973, moving to Oldsmar, FL, for health reasons.

In Oldsmar, Mr. Williams occupied himself in community service, twice being elected as Mayor. And he returned to work, becoming a reliability engineer for Honeywell, retiring again after 12 years. In 1998, Mr. and Mrs. Williams moved to Cary, becoming residents of Glenaire until their deaths in 2001 and 2003, respectively .

Surviving are: three sons, Robert Lee Williams, Jr., of Santa Ana, CA, Paul Williams and wife, Ellen, of Cary, NC, and David Williams and wife, Heidi, of Marysville, OH; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

For the past several years, Mr. Williams was a resident of the Skilled Nursing facility of Glenaire. The family wishes to express our deep appreciation for the loving care given him by the Glenaire staff.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 25, 2003, at 4 p.m. at Glenaire Continuing Care Community, Cary, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 28, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Whitten Funeral Home/Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg, VA. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg, VA.

The Williams family will receive friends Sunday, July 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Rd., Lynchburg, VA.

Donald E. Boyette

Donald E. Boyette, 47 of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2004.

Born May 22, 1957 in Bethel, NC, he was a son of the late Gene Boyette and is survived by his mother, Pearline B. Marks of Tarboro, NC. He was employed at Glenn Trent Wrecker service.

In addition to his mother, survivors include, one son, Brian Adamczak of Forest, three brothers; Marvin and Mike Boyette of Madison Heights and Ray Boyette of Lynchburg, one sister, Brenda Wyatt of Madison Heights, grandmother, Annie Beacham of Tarboro, NC, two very dear aunts, Frances Rainwater of Elkton, KY and Esther Tyson of Greenville, NC, his longtime friends, Jerry Justice and Leo Harrison, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Reverend Andrew Grose.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Ray Boyette in Lynchburg.

Whitten Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Monelison Chapel, is assisting the family with services.

Donna Ring Smith

Donna Ring Smith, 46, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 in Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born July 1, 1955 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of William Edgar Ring, Jr. and Dola Candler Ring of Rustburg. Donna was a flight attendant with U.S. Air and was a graduate of Randolph Macon Woman’s College, earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1995. She was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her daughter, Jordan Elizabeth Smith and Jordan’s father, Dennis Smith, both of Lynchburg; one brother, Ricky Lee Ring and his wife, Gail, also of Lynchburg; one sister, JoAnn R. Clemenson and her husband, Steven of Prince George and three nephews, David Lee Ring, Corey Adam Ring, and Steven Noah Clemenson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Flat Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Carey, Jr. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the home of her parents, 127 Crestview Drive, Rustburg.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Flat Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.

Sterling Bradley "Buddy" Foster

Sterling Bradley "Buddy" Foster, 76, of Lynchburg died Friday, March 28, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband for 56 years of Kathleen Grubbs Foster.

Buddy was born September 11, 1926 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Lacy Murrell Foster and Lena Bell Steele Foster. He retired from Lynchburg Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Randolph L. Foster and a sister, Cecilia F. Clack.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa F. May and her husband, Jimmy and a grandson, Dylan F. May of Lynchburg.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by Mr. Anderson A. Duck.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

The family suggests memorials be made to Fairview United Methodist Church or Greenview Church Of God.

Peggy Marshall Campbell

Peggy Marshall Campbell, 51, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 at her home. She was the wife of the late James A. Campbell who passed away July 16, 1978.

She was born September 14, 1951 in Charlottesville the daughter of the late Jacob A. Marshall and Evelyn Hackett Marshall of Charlottesville, who survives. Peggy was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and the American Counseling Assoc.

In addition to her father and husband, Peggy was preceded in by death her sister Julia Blankenship.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two God-daughters Stacy Hanks of Lynchburg and Jewell Carter of Lynch Station, two sisters, Evelyn Viar and Debra L. Marshall both of Charlottesville, a close friend Darlene Carter of Lynchburg and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 28, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Reverend Carlton Duck. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 3 - 5 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Joy Annette Wilborn Redd

Joy Annette Wilborn Redd, 89, of Lynchburg, formerly of Clarksville, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 in The Summit. She was the wife of the late Tom Redd.

Born April 18, 1915 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Lenord and Annie Tuck Wilborn. Mrs. Redd retired from Burlington Finishing Plant in Clarksville after nineteen years of service. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, Madison Heights and loved to quilt and cook.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Katherine “Jo” Allgood; four brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Redd is survived by one son-in-law, Marshall Allgood; five grandchildren, Brenda Miller and her husband, Mike, Janice Allgood, Donnie Allgood and his wife, Darlene, Robbie Allgood and his wife, Amy and Pamela Martin and her husband, Jason; seven great-grandchildren, Daniel Allgood, October Lacy, Samantha Campbell, Tyler Allgood, Leah Allgood, Tabitha Brown, and Kristin Blankenship and two great-great-grandchildren, Alex and Katlyn Lacy; three sisters, Francis Forlines, Pearl Mayne, and Sarah Goodwin and one brother, Larze Wilborn.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Whitten Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Earl F. Clarkson, Jr. and the Rev. Tim Kinney. Interment will follow in Hitesburg Baptist Church cemetery in Virgilina.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her granddaughter, Brenda, 283 Eastview Drive, Madison Heights.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc.

Thelma Dawson Powell

Thelma Dawson Powell, 92, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, May 17, 2002 at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Lynchburg, December 21, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Collie Mack Dawson and Willie Wooldridge Dawson.

Mrs. Powell is survived by: two sons; Vernon E. Powell, Jr. and his wife June and Raymond Powell and his wife Ann both of Lynchburg, two daughters; Willie Ora Lucado of Newport News and Frances Jones of Fredericksburg. She is also survived by two sisters; Dorothy Brooks and Elsie Paris both of Lynchburg, 13 Grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 20, 2002 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel by Dr. J. Monty Fox. Interment will follow at Tyreeanna United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in Ms. Powell’s memory may be made to the Keystone Baptist Church, Fleetwood Dr., Lynchburg, VA.

Kathleen Cyrus Bryant

Kathleen Cyrus Bryant, 86, of Lynchburg, died Monday March 24, 2003.

Born November 3, 1916 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Wince Edward Cyrus and Elizabeth Mann Cyrus. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel L. Bryant; one brother, Porter Cyrus; and four sisters, Anther Litchford, Reva Lair, Zelma Moses Wade, and Nora Stinnett. Mrs. Bryant was a member of Fairview Christian Church. Surviving are three sisters; Ruth Hawksworth of Pennsylvania, Rachel Rowland and Ann Sullivan, both of Lynchburg. Kathleen wished to thank her special friends, Marie Twisdale and Jean Reynolds for their support.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday March 27, 2003 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, by the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton and the Rev. Gary Vernon.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Christian Church, 2701 Campbell Ave., Lynchburg, Va.
