Charles Scott Rucker

Charles Scott Rucker, 91, formerly of Madison Heights, died Monday, October 27, 2003 in the Medical Care Center. He was the husband of the late Margaret Burford Rucker.

Born May 6, 1912 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late John W. and Florence Powell Rucker. He was retired from the State of Virginia Division of Corrections and was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church and the Madison Heights Ruritan Club.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Scott Rucker, his brothers and sister.

Mr. Rucker is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Arthur L. Wolz, Jr.

There will not be a scheduled visitation, but, family and friends may visit at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Amelon U.M. Church Family Life Center, P.O. Box 739, Madison Heights, VA, 24572.

Alma Nash Booth

Alma Nash Booth, 77, of 4654 New Chapel Road, Concord, died Sunday, September 5, 2004 at her home. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Stephen Russell Booth of Concord.

Born August 6, 1927 in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late James Allen and Malissie Guthrie Nash. Mrs. Booth loved the Lord and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth L. Nash.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Booth is survived by one daughter, Doris Booth Austin of Lynchburg; two brothers, Herman J. Nash of Spout Spring and James R. Nash of Naples, FL; two sisters, Shirley N. Jones of Lynchburg and Mildred N. Wingfield of Spout Spring; two grandchildren, Diane Austin Taylor and David Wayne Austin and two great-grandchildren, Kaity Taylor and Ryan Taylor.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Thomas Road Baptist Church by Dr. Jerry Falwell. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the residence.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Thomas Road Baptist Church or Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 4005 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA, 24014.

Elsie Johnson Dobyns

Elsie Johnson Dobyns, 92 of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 04, 2004 at the Grace Lodge in Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Raymond Ulric Dobyns.

Born November 4, 2004 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late George Garrett Johnson and Mattie Lee Johnson.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Calvin Rudolph Dobyns and Raymond Ulric Dobyns and ten brothers and sisters.

Survivors include three children, Betty Payne of Roanoke, Ida Nuckles of Lynchburg and Gary Dobyns and wife Sarah of Lynchburg, 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, great -great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Reverend Eugene Condrey.

Beatrice Clark Bomar

Beatrice Clark Bomar, 71 of 102 Laurel Dr. in Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2005. She was the wife of Edwin C. Bomar, Sr.

Born June 12, 1933 in Richmond, she was a daughter of the late Chester and Gertrude Lacks Clark. Mrs. Bomar was a member of the Randolph Memorial Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester W. Clark, Jr. and George Thomas Clark.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Wright and her husband Bob of Amherst and a son, Edwin Bomar, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Monroe, two sisters-in-law, Faye Clark and Frances Clark, five grandchildren, Sandy B. Lewis and husband Chris, Chris Johnson, Scott Johnson and wife Karen, Jade Bomar and Ryan Bomar, four great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, by the Reverend Mark W. Beck.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph Memorial Baptist Church organ fund, or to the Monelison Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.

Whitten Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Monelison Chapel, is assisting the family.

Lewis Raymond Reynolds

Lewis Raymond Reynolds, 77, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born October 2, 1927 in Appomattox, he was the son of the late John Wesley Reynolds and the late Martha Ann Donley Reynolds. He had retired from Montague-Betts Co., North Plant after 38 years of employment and had served with the US ARMY during WWII and the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by four children: Joan Almond and husband Ricky of Madison Heights, Lewis Ray Reynolds and wife Rebecca of Lynchburg, Wanda Wilson and and her husband the late Garnett Wilson of Lynchburg, and Cynthia Reynolds of Madison Heights; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother, Millard Reynolds and wife Brenda of Lynchburg; and a sister, Betty Gallier of Appomattox.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Old Concord Presbyterian Church cemetery, Spout Spring, by Rev. Timothy R. Earnhardt.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 4504 Starkey Road, Suite 115, Roanoke, VA 24014.

The family is being assisted by Whitten Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Timberlake Chapel, 434-239-0331.

Agnes Hudson Bailey

Agnes Hudson Bailey, 78, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2004, after a short battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Newman Bailey.

Born August 17, 1926, in Clifford, she was a daughter of the late John Clarkston Hudson and Betty Pearl Cash Hudson Campbell.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Madison Heights Baptist Church and was retired from General Electric Corporation after 27 years of service. She was a loving and devoted grandmother. Mrs. Bailey was an avid gardener, birdwatcher and enjoyed needlework, as well as many other crafts.

In addition to her husband, a son, Billy Bailey, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Robert H. Bailey of Fredericksburg, two daughters; Maxine B. Parks of Madison Heights and Audrey B. Burton and husband Richard of Ashburn, four brothers; Henry Gilbert Hudson of Amherst, William Hudson of Madison Heights, Bernard D. Hudson of Amherst and Jimmy Campbell of Madison Heights, three sisters; Virginia Wright of Amherst, Lillian Pauline Campbell of Lynchburg and Betty Corinne Flannery of Madison Heights, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends’ tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Robin Moon Carroll

Robin Moon Carroll, 46, of Gladys, died Thursday, October 30, 2003 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Harris Talmadge Carroll.

Born July 23, 1957 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Robert Glenn and Ann Watts Moon of Rustburg. Robin was a former employee of Intercon and a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Moon and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Watts.

In addition to her husband, Robin is survived by three sons, Jeromy Hudson of Lynchburg and his friend, Sara, Robert A. "Tony" Moon and his wife, Katrina of Madison Heights, and James Bronson Carroll of Gladys; one step-daughter, Serena C. Planter and her husband, Chris of Windsor, New York; one brother, Glenn Moon, Jr. and his wife, Amy of Evington; two sisters, Renee M. Wood and her husband, Tommy of Lynchburg and Rhonda Sue M. Reynolds and her husband, Kenneth of Rustburg; five grandchildren and a special friend, Cathy Powell of Forest.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Jim Moon and the Rev. David Heerspink. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the home of her sister, Rhonda, 745 Knollwood Drive.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all of Robin's family and friends, Dr. MacNeill and his staff, the Nurses at Virginia Baptist Hospital on Mundy 5, and the Nurses, staff, and Physical Therapists of the English Building for their love, support and care.

Franklin Lewis Phelps Sr.

Franklin Lewis Phelps Sr., 76, of Lynchburg went home to be with his Lord Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Avante at Lynchburg. For 56 years, he was the husband of Eleanore Nickerson Phelps of Lynchburg, who survives.

Born February 10, 1927 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Charlie Walter Phelps and the late Jenny Coleman Phelps. Mr. Phelps had retired from Kavanaugh Industries of Lynchburg after 45 years of employment and was a member of Tyreeanna United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Phelps is survived by: two daughters; Faye P. Grant and husband Donnie and Karen P. Marlowe both of Lynchburg, three sons; Bobby Phelps and wife Diane, Franklin “Frankie” Phelps, Jr. and wife Wilma both of Lynchburg and Vince Phelps and wife Carolyn of Goode, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Reverend James W. Martin. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the family home on Tyreeanna Road, Lynchburg.

Hazel Burleigh Burford

Hazel Burleigh Burford, 81, of Rustburg, passed away Monday, February 3, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of the late John Anderson Burford, Sr. who died February 8, 2000.

Born December 28, 1921 in Amherst Co., she was the daughter of the late Christopher Burleigh and the late Clara Jennings Burleigh. She was a member of Jordan Baptist Church and had retired from the Central Virginia Training Center.

Mrs. Burford is survived by: two daughters; Louise G. Crouch of Evington and Patricia Ann Burks and husband Kenneth of Amherst, a son; Rev. John A. Burford, Jr. and wife Betty of Lynchburg, a special nephew; Eddie Dale Burleigh and wife Betty of Lynchburg, a sister; Elizabeth Almond of Rustburg, a brother; Christopher Burleigh of Lynchburg, sixteen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February, 6, 2003 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel by the Reverend Melvin Campbell, the Reverend Scott Dean, the Reverend Woody Hudson and the Reverend Warren Napier. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

George Lester Powell

George Lester Powell, 75, formerly of Lynchburg, died Friday May 3, 2002 in Bednars Senior Center, Keysville, VA.

Born August 9, 1926 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late George Madison Powell and Mamie Terrell Brooks Powell. He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church and worked for the Lynchburg Hosiery Mill. George was preceded in death by a brother and sister early in his youth; also four additional brothers, Carl Elmo Powell, Marvin M. Powell, Samuel Odell Powell, and Clarence E. Powell, and two sisters, Otelia Bruffy Kirby and Carrie Mann. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday May 6, 2002 in Presbyterian cemetery by the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Myrtle Skinner Lipscomb

Myrtle Skinner Lipscomb, 82, of Concord, died Sunday April 28, 2002 following a short illness.She was the wife of Warren M. "Buck" Lipscomb for 60 years.

Born December 2, 1919 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Frank Skinner and Maude Inge Skinner, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Russell Skinner and Nathan Wayne Skinner.

Mrs. Lipscomb was the office manager for the Lynchburg Livestock Market for 40 years before her retirement, and was a member of the Bible Student Association.

In addition to her husband Buck, she is survived by a sister, Margaret A. Skinner; a sister-in law, Nellie Skinner; 2 nieces, Carolyn Hutehinson and her husband Larry, and Phyllis Brewer and her husband Richard; 2 grand-nieces, Vickie Coleman and Jennifer Kelley and her husband Kevin, and their son Wyatt; and a grand-nephew, Frank Hutchinson.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday May 3, 2002 at Whitten Park Ave. Chapel, with the Rev. David Hauke officiating, after which the family will receive friends.

Whitten Park Ave. Chapel is serving the family.

Eldon Ira Seldomridge

Eldon Ira Seldomridge, 80, of Lynchburg, went home to be with his Lord, Wednesday January 29, 2003, from complications related to congestive heart failure.

Born March 12, 1922, in Hinton, W. VA, he was a son of the late Nelson Shanklin Seldomridge and Anna May Mullins Seldomridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Dorothy (Jackie) Rose Seldomridge; brother, Billy Joe Seldomridge of Winter Haven, FL.; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

He entered the U.S. Army on August 5, 1940 at the age of 18, spending five years in service of his country. During W.W.II he spent three years and three months as a tank commander in the armored division, finally coming home August 13, 1945, at the wars end. After 33 years of service to Lynchburg Foundry, he retired on January !, 1978; during that time he was a member of the Ironmasters Club, and was a member of Fairview Christian Church, and the Mens Bible Class .

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday February 1, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. Jan Weston officiating.Burial will follow in Spring Hill cemetery, with military honors by the American Legion Post 16. Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road. (239-0331) Memorial contributions may be made to the Caring Fund of Fairview Christian Church.
