Doris Hudson Mays

Doris Hudson Mays, 71, of 289 Ragland Road, Madison Heights, died Friday, February 3, 2006 in Lynchburg General Hospital, following a long illness. She was the wife of Larry Thomas Mays.

Born October 19, 1934 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late David Seay Hudson, Sr. and Annie Davis Hudson. Mrs. Mays was a loving and devoted wife, sister, aunt, and homemaker. She was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David S. Hudson, Jr. and Malcolm M. Hudson.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Mays is survived by one brother, Preston A. Hudson and his wife, Evelyn of Amherst; two sisters, Margaret H. Tweedy of Rustburg and Ruby H. Cash and her husband, J.C. of Amherst and many special nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 6, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Jack L. Brooks. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

The family will receive friends from 3:30-5:00 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Whitten Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Monelison Chapel is serving the Mays family.

Lucille Wilkes Dixon

Lucille Wilkes Dixon, 75, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday April 16, 2002 following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Ernest Calvin Dixon.

Born August 4, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Victor Lawrence Wilkes and Grace English Wilkes.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Lawrence, Thomas, Willie, and Robert Wilkes and a sisters: Doris Aultice.

Mrs. Dixon retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Company and was a member of Fairview Christian Church.

She is survived by a son: W. Michael Dixon and a daughter: Linda D. Wright both of Lynchburg; two step-sons: Lester R. Dixon and wife, Sarah of Georgia and Sherwin C. Dixon and wife, Zella of Tenn.; three brothers: Ray Wilkes and wife, Norris of Gretna, J.D. Wilkes of Martinsville, Walter F. Wilkes and wife, Lucy of Lynchburg; a sister: Mary W. Barbour and husband, Artis of Ohio; two granddaughters: Patti Dixon of Tenn. and Melissa Franklin of Forest; a great-granddaughter: Amanda Camden of Forest; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday April 18, 2002 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the Rev. Jan Weston. Burial will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today (wed) at the funeral home, 7404

Timberlake Road, and at other times at the residence .

Edward Lee Moore

Edward Lee Moore, 89, of Lynchburg, died Friday, August 9, 2002 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Helen Martin Moore for sixty-three years.

Born March 27, 1913 in Chatham, he was the son of the late Lee Arthur and Lena Yeatts Moore.

He was retired from John P. Hughes Motor Company and was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Moore was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius E. Moore and Carlton Hunt Moore. In addition to his wife, Mr. Moore is survived by three brothers, Harry C. Moore, Addison C. Moore, and Jack G. Moore, all of Chatham and one sister, Mildred Moore Hudson of Durham, NC.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Spring Hill cemetery, Lynchburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel, 1336 Park Ave., Lynchburg, 24501 and other times at the residence.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider West Lynchburg Baptist Church, 3031 Memorial Ave., Lynchburg, VA, 24501 or a charity of choice.

Thurman Eugene Thompson

Tommy went to be with his Savior on the evening of January 16, 2003.

He was born in Lexington, VA on July 27, 1923 to proud parents, John H. and Elizabeth Clark Thompson. He was the devoted husband to the late Nannie M. Burks. Tommy was the father of two sons, Stephen E. Thompson and wife, Susanne and Michael W. Thompson and wife, Sally; one daughter, Johanna Latham; five grandchildren, Gene and Elizabeth Thompson, Kim, Kammy and Kayla Latham all of Maryland; two sisters, Audry Hylton and Margaret Weese.

Tommy served his country and retired from the U.S. Army and National Guard. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Naola. Tommy was a banjo musician, he played with The Gospel Mountain Men.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends, especially his devoted friend, Lawanda Freeman Johnson to the very end.

Celebration services of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Ronnie Freeman, Pastor of Good News Baptist Church. Interment will be in Big Island cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be given to your favorite charity and remember Tommy by his favorite motto: Live well, Laugh often and Love much.

John Henry Gallagher II

John Henry Gallagher II, 82, of Lynchburg, passed away October 11, 2003 at his residence. He was a son of the late John Henry Gallagher I and Emma Nora Stanley, and was also preceded in death by nine sisters.

Mr. Gallagher was retired from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers after 55 years of service, a member of Fairview Christian Church, a United States Marine Corps Veteran having served in World War II, as well as a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Ruby Trent Gallagher, three children, Sheila Grant and her husband Harold, of Lynchburg, John Gallagher III and his wife Barbara, of Amherst, and Richard Gallagher and his wife Debbie of Lynchburg, a brother, Jack Dennis Gallagher, of Reidsville, NC., nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

A Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 13, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Dr. Melvin Campbell officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight Sunday, October 12, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Hospice of The Hills.

Evelyn Mae Newton

Evelyn Mae Newton, 87, of Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born December 18, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Ed Amos and Josie Robertson Amos. Two sons, James Baber and Charles Newton, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include twelve children, Martha Griffith and husband Dan, of Richmond, Aubrey Newton and wife Joyce, of Georgia, Donald Newton, of California, Bobby Newton and wife Petty, of Madison Heights, Clyde Newton and wife Sandra, of Madison Heights, Brenda Lindberg and husband Larry, of California, Steve Newton, Sr. and Mary Newton, of Madison Heights, Dell Newton, of Orlando, FL, Bonnie Londeree and husband Wayne, of Madison Heights, Margie Bryant and husband Red, of Dilwyn, Trudy Sanzere, of Richmond, and Ben Lang and wife Jo, of Newcanton; four step-children, Roy Rogers Newton, James Alfred Newton, Jr., Celia Dorsey and Nancy Newton; three sisters, Eva Wakefield, Mary Woodfin, Lois Woodfin and one brother, Calvin Amos, thirty- six grandchildren, thirty-one great-great grandchildren and a dear friend, Franklin Woody, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with Reverend Jacob Uthop officiating. Interment in Meade cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of Bonnie Londeree.

Todd Hamilton Crews

Todd Hamilton Crews, 39, of Lakeland, FL, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004.

Born August 3, 1964, in Lynchburg, VA, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Burton and Auguster Crews and his maternal grandparents, William M. and Lelia Stump.

Surving are his parents, Andrew Burton Crews and Vivian S. Stump Crews, other relatives and friends.

A private graveside service will be held Monday at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends’ from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Euclid Christian Church or the Monelison Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Irene Grigg Fitzgerald

Irene Grigg Fitzgerald, 91, formerly of Radcliff Ave. Lynchburg, died Thursday November 18, 2004 at Fairmont Crossing, Amherst. She was the wife of the late

Loyd Gray Fitzgerald for 62 years, before his death in September of 1999.

Born May 15, 1913, in Buckingham County, she was a daughter of the late Phillip Ashley Grigg and the late Margaret Housewright Grigg.

Mrs. Fitzgerald was a graduate of Phillips Business College, a retired secretary with Westover Dairy, and a devoted member of Heritage United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday November 22, 2004, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Dr. Kenneth B. Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Rev. James Ray Wooddell

Rev. James Ray Wooddell, 76, of 140 Beechwood Drive, Madison Heights, VA, died Friday, January 6, 2006 in Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg, VA. He was the husband of Rosemarie Campbell Wooddell for twenty-eight years. Born May 26, 1929 in Charleston, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Lee Charles and Stella Beverage Wooddell. He was a graduate of Boston University, where he earned his Masters of Divinity Degree. He was a Methodist Minister, having served more than forty-seven years in the West Virginia and Virginia Conferences. Rev. Wooddell retired from Monroe United Methodist Church in 1995. He was a member of the Amherst Ruritan Club and the Clinton Masonic Lodge in Amherst. Rev. Wooddell was a U.S. Army Chaplain and while serving his country attained the rank of Major. He attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Amherst. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Wooddell and Jack Wooddell. In addition to his wife, Rev. Woodell is survived by nine children, James S. Wooddell of Winter Park, FL, Virginia Plummer of Billings, MT, Steve Wooddell of Williamstown, WV, Jeanette McCloud of Palmyra, VA, Jack Wooddell of Richmond, VA, Steve Turkovich of Bellevue, NE, Bill Turkovich of Santa Domingo, Anne Moquin of Greensboro, NC, and Michael Wooddell of Madison Heights. He is also survived by a great aunt, Josephine Crotty of Madison Heights; two aunts, Mary Barnett of Knoxville, TN and Gladys Duncan of Charleston, WV; twenty-four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2006 at Emmanuel U.M. Church by the Rev. Dr. Tim Hazlett. The family will receive friends Sunday at the church following the services and other times at the residence. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2006 at Emmanuel U.M. Church. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Virginia Shelton Arthur

Virginia Shelton Arthur, 92, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at her home. She was the wife of the late Louis Nathan Arthur.

Born June 4, 1909 in Gretna, she was the daughter of the late Tommie Snow Shelton and the late Hettie Tuck Shelton. Mrs. Arthur was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Shelton and three sisters, Viola S. Keatts, Elsie S. Overstreet, and Irene S. Elliott.

Mrs. Arthur is survived by one sister, Ruth S. Wilmer of Lynchburg; a special nephew and caregiver, Arthur B. Dodd, III, also of Lynchburg and a number of other nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy, Jr. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Edward Logan Bass

Edward Logan Bass, 61, of Lynchburg, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 at his residence.

Born January 12, 1943 in Charlottesville, he was the son of Ethel Sandridge Bass of Lynchburg and the late Bascomb Claude Bass. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Allen Bass; and by a nephew, Phillip Bass.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Tammy Bass Bowling of Madison Heights; a grandson, Michael Edward Bowling of Lynchburg; a sister, Jean Burns and husband Odell of Lynchburg; five brothers: Carroll Bass of Madison Heights and a close dear friend, Jean Keatts of Lynch Station, Michael Bass and wife Karen of Madison Heights, Ronald Bass and James Bass and wife Sue both of Lynchburg, and David Bass and wife Pat of Wilmington, NC; as well as three nieces; four nephews; and seven great nieces and nephews.

Eddie was loved and will be missed greatly by his family, but we find great comfort in knowing how much he trusted in God, even to the end. May he rest in peace and may his body be restored in heaven.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Rev. Walter Yancey. Interment will follow in Hat Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Family visitation will be today from 7– 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his sister, 594 Middle St., Lynchburg.

Addie “Delores” Boothe Hill

Addie “Delores” Boothe Hill, 63, of 403 Roberts Avenue, lot #4, died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of John Henry Hill, Jr.

Born June 7, 1939 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Shirley Boothe Hawkins of Lynchburg and the late Lawrence Willard Boothe. “Delores” was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, daughter, sister, and homemaker.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three brothers, Jimmy Boothe and his wife, Brenda of Rustburg, Larry Boothe and his wife, Linda of Forest, and Jay Boothe of Lynchburg; her step-father, Otis Hawkins of Lynchburg; three nephews, Kenneth Boothe, Larry Boothe, III, and Billy Boothe and two nieces, Rhonda Smith and Tonya Crowe and four special friends, Molly Abbott, Joyce Parrish, Gena Moore, and Ruby Black.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Danny Eubank and the Rev. Maurice Coffey.

The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the home of her mother and step-father, 3342 Campbell Avenue.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church.
