John Harold Tipton

John Harold Tipton, 78, of Goode, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at Avante at Lynchburg after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 wonderful years, Dorothea Sopigoti Tipton.

Born in Russell Co., Va., he was the son of the late John Henry and Irene McReynolds Tipton. He was preceded in death by one sister, Jean T. Strickland and one special nephew, Michael K. Carmack.

John was a charter member and Presbyterian Elder of Northminster Presbyterian Church and Forest Presbyterian Church and a retired state trooper with the Virginia Department of State Police after 19 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Harold L. Tipton and his wife Mary, of Goode; one brother, Roy N. Tipton of Bristol, Va. and two beloved grandchildren, Miles H. Tipton and Tyler M. Tipton.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m, Wednesday, Dec.29, 2004, from Forest Presbyterian Church by Pastor David P. Gellert. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Frank John Stepic

Frank John Stepic, 91, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2006 following a short illness. He was the husband of the late Frances Caroline Stepic, who passed away September 5, 2004.

Born July 28, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late Anton Stepic and the late Josephine Blatnik Stepic. Mr. Stepic was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Clifford M. Ainsworth and John P. Hribar, as well as two brothers and one sister.

He is survived by two daughters, Francine M. Hribar of Scottsdale, AZ and Carol A. Ainsworth of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, John Hribar and wife Anne, Wendy Wucherer and husband Greg, Cliff Ainsworth and fiancé, Suzanne, Tammy Murphy and husband Patrick, Andrea Adkins and husband Tommy, Darryl Ainsworth and wife Michele, Francine Genthe and husband Brian; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, and 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2006, prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Dorson officiating.

Inurnment will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the Columbarium of Spring Hill cemetery.

Whitten Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Timberlake Chapel, 434-239-0331, is assisting the family with services.

Doris Plake Neeley

Doris Plake Neeley, 79, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, April 02, 2003 at her home. She was the wife of the late Thomas Neeley.

Born May 21, 1923 in Tipton, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Lincoln Earl and Frances Crum Plake. Mrs. Neeley was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Neeley, Jr. and one brother, Edward Plake.

Mrs. Neeley is survived by a daughter, Darlene N. Martin and her husband, Nathan of Madison Heights; four brothers, Earl of Wakarusa, Ind., Keith of Frankfurt, Ind., John of Sebring, FL, and Frederick of Tipton, Ind.; two sisters, Carol Stucker of Indiana and Barbara Cunningham of Groveland, FL; three grandchildren, Timothy, Jason, and April and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Meade cemetery, Madison Heights by Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr. .

The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the home of her daughter, 983 S. Coolwell Road, Madison Heights.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marie Gowen Goodman Beale

Marie Gowen Goodman Beale, 75, of Madison Heights, died Monday, July 28, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Twice married , she was the wife of the late Robert T. Goodman and she is survived by her husband, Marcus M. Beale, Sr.

Born in Arrington, Virginia, January 11, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Jones Gowen. Mrs. Beale and her husband enjoyed making jewelry and working with gems. They were both charter members of the Lynchburg Mineral and Gem Society. She was retired from General Electric and was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.

One brother, Ralph E. Gowen and one sister, Gladys Miles preceded her in death.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by six daughters, Linda G. Carden and her husband Casey of Lynchburg, Barbara G. Moore and her husband Steven, Geraldine G. Tyree and her husband Donnie, Carolyn G. Garrett and her husband Alvin and Betty G. Mertz and her husband Jon all of Madison Heights and Patricia G. Wood and her husband Alan “Chip” of Forest; one son, Ray T. Goodman, Sr. and his wife Sherry of Concord; one step son, Marcus Beale, II and his wife Cathy and one step daughter, Marcia B. Williams all of Madison Heights; two sisters, Irene Lipscomb and Mamie Lawrence and her husband Elton all of Madison Heights; one sister in law, Annie Weber of Lynchburg and close family friends, George Huffman, and Ralph and Harriett Robinson; 24 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Briarwood Memorial Gardens with Dr. Timothy Madison officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Monelison Rescue Squad.

George Fredrick “Ricky” Ziegler, Jr.

George Fredrick “Ricky” Ziegler, Jr., 50, of 120 Willow Bend Drive, Lynchburg, died Monday, October 11, 2004 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving and devoted husband of Patricia Nash Ziegler for twenty-five years.

Born December 30, 1953 in Farmville, he was the son of Ruth Perkins Ziegler Carson of Cullen and the late George F. Ziegler, Sr. Ricky was a faithful and dedicated employee of Seven Hills Auto Transporters for more than fifteen years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Meagan Craddock and her husband, Rob and Eric Daniel Ziegler, both of Lynchburg and Jody Lynn Ziegler of Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, NE; one brother, William Ziegler and his wife, Marie of Roanoke; four sisters, Margaret Kirkpatrick and her husband, Cliff of Lynchburg, Norma Kirby and her husband, Earl of Powhatan, Ann Howell and her husband, Frankie of Gretna and Gayle Phelps and her husband, Charles of Richmond and was a very special “Poppy” to his grandchildren, Lauren, Jacob, and Zachary.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Carl Weiser.

The family will receive friends following the service until 9 p.m.

Jack Ray Gillaspie

Jack Ray Gillaspie, 72, of Lynchburg died Thursday, February 09, 2006 at the Medical Care Center. He was the husband of Sandra Holderbaum Gillaspie.

Born in Bedford County, October 28, 1933, he was a son of the late Frank Warren and Geneva Crowder Gillaspie. He was retired from the Rubatex Corporation after 43 years of service. Jack’s focus in life was doing the Lord’s work. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church where he served as both deacon and usher. He also served over 36 years as a captain with the Bus Ministry. Jack enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Melva Basham and her husband Johnny of Moneta; one niece, Donna Jacobs and her husband Mark and their son Hunter; one uncle Charlie Gillaspie and his wife Gracie.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday from Thomas Road Baptist Church with Pastor Johnny Basham officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

M. Lyman Johnson

M. Lyman Johnson, 75, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday March 27, 2003 at his residence.

He was the husband of Elaine Cummins Johnson.

Born July 26, 1927 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Willie Lyman Johnson and Daisy Estelle Wood Johnson, and was predeceased by a brother Edward S. Johnson.

Mr. Johnson served with the Merchant Marines during W.W.II; he attended Lynchburg College and was a graduate of V.P.I. with a B.S degree in Architertural Engineering, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Tau Sigma Delta Fraternity; Mr. Johnson was a Charter member and Elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was appointed a Trustee Emeritus. After working at E.I.Dupont of Wilmington, he returned to Lynchburg with Wiley & Wilson, was an associate of Stanhope Johnson Architects, a partner of Cress & Johnson Architects, owner of M. Lyman Johnson Consulting Engineers, and a partner of Simpson- Johnson, Inc. before his retirement.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Stephanie J. Litchford and her husband Jimmy of Lynchburg; three sons, Walter L. Johnson of Waianae, Hawaii, Richard L. Johnson and his wife Lori of Harlingen, Texas and Gregory M. Johnson and his wife Blair of Charlottesville; a brother, Harold Johnson and his wife Amy of Gretna; two sisters, Gaynelle J. Shively of Lynchburg and Rebecca J. Harker and her husband Jack of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Whitney Rea Kramer and her husband Jeb, Ryan Litchford, Tyler Litchford, and Alex Johnson; and one great-grandson, Blake Kramer.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday April 2, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Margie Anderson officiating. A private burial service will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Cecil Smith Walden

Cecil Smith Walden, 84, of Concord, died Wednesday July 16, 2003 following a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Margaret Cunningham Walden.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia W. Beach, and a sister, Lois Keatts.

Mr. Walden was a grower for Schenkel’s Greenhouse for 39 years before his retirement, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Concord.

In addition to his wife Margaret, Mr. Walden is survived by a granddaughter, Donna Beach of Bedford; a niece, Joyce Burke and husband, Ronnie of Lynchburg; a sister, Lucille Stokes; three great-nieces and one great-nephew.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday July 19, 2003, at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. Frank W. Casper, Sr., officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today (fri) at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Minnie Crooks Harris

Minnie Crooks Harris, 84, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at the Carrington. She was the wife of the late William Henry Harris.

Born in Appomattox County, April 15, 1915, she was a daughter of the late James Robert and Mary Stanley Crooks. She was retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Corp. and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. She was also a member of Yellow Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, James Harris and his wife June of Connecticut; one daughter, Barbara Fenwick and her husband William of Rustburg; one sister, Russell Tucker and her husband Joe of Lynchburg; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Spring Hill cemetery by the Rev. Jim Moon.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions should consider the Campbell County Rescue Squad.

Whitten Timberlake Chapel is serving the family.

Correll Hamilton

Correll Hamilton, 83, of 639 High Peak Road, Monroe, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at his home. He was the husband of Victoria Duff Hamilton.

Born March 3, 1921 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Reese and Alice Hamilton Branham. He was retired from Falwell Well Corp. and a member of st. Paul's Episcopal Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael Hamilton, three sisters, Rosa Johns, Lethie Clark, and Ollie Duff and two brothers, Dudley Hamilton and Ernest Hamilton.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hamilton is survived by two sons, Lester Hamilton and his wife, Rebecca of Amherst and Marvin Junior Hamilton of Monroe; two daughters, Kathleen Hamilton and Butch of Monroe and Mae Tetrault and her husband, Paul of Pennsylvania; eleven grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Nicole Hamilton, who took care of him during his illness; eleven great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Barry Tucker. Interment will follow in the Hamilton Family cemetery, Monroe.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2004 at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Jerry Terrell Williams, Sr.

Jerry Terrell Williams, Sr., 70, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born January 1, 1933 in Campbell County, he was the son of the late Leroy Williams and the late Bettie Brown Williams. Mr. Williams was a US Navy veteran, he was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and was president of Williams Electric Co. for 45 years. He was also owner & operator of Coney Island Hotdogs and a member of the Free Masons and C.V.R.C.A.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by an older brother; Aubrey, a niece; Jan Stephenson and his beloved daughter; Karen W. East.

He is survived by: his wife; June Christley Williams of Lynchburg, a son; Jerry Terrell Williams, Jr. and wife Karen of Roanoke, five special granddaughters; Melanie Blankenship Witt and husband Jason of Evington, Emily East and Amanda East both of Evington, Dawn Williams and Heather Williams both of Roanoke, a great granddaughter; Olivia Witt, a special "daughter"; Lois Gowen of Piney River, two sisters-in-law; Cathryn Williams and Alyce Blanks and husband Larry, a brother-in-law; Pete Matheney and wife Virgie, two nieces; Amy Williams Rice and Vicki Ewers, two nephews; A. Lee Williams, Jr. and Steven Craven, a special cousin; Richard Wilkes and wife Janet and six great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
