Kyla Ann Huffman

Kyla Ann Huffman, 61, of Forest, died Saturday, February 15, 2003 at her residence after a short illness. She was the wife of William Dale Huffman.

Born in Highland Park, MI, August 12, 1941, she was the daughter of June Parent Duane and the late Kyle Earl Ulch. Kyla was an LPN with the Carrington Nursing Home.

In addition to her husband and mother, three children, Sandra Parnell, David Parnell and Mindy Pettit; two-step children, Heather Braswell and Nathan Huffman and four grandchildren, Emma and Erin Pettit and Hannah and Haley Braswell, survive her.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Dorothy Waynes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to the Good Shepherd Hospice, 4005 Electric Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24014.

Brandon Ryan Thornton

Brandon Ryan Thornton, 8-year-old son of Lisa Brizendine Thornton of Amherst and Robert Eugene Thornton of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Brandon was born August 15, 1995 in Lynchburg and was a second grade student at Amherst Elementary School.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Robert Christopher Thornton and Jonathan Alan Thornton, both of Amherst; one half-brother, William Rogers of Lynchburg; grandparents, Linda and Larry Brizendine of Rustburg and Jane and Steve Wade of Madison Heights; great-grandmother, Mildred Brizendine of Madison Heights; aunts and uncles, Margaret and Richard Beaddles of Amherst, Michael and Angie Brizendine of Campbell County, Tony and Karen Wade of Lynchburg, and Steve Wade, Jr. of Madison Heights and eleven cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Jack Brooks. Interment will follow in Cumbie Memorial cemetery, Rustburg.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

Dorothy Carley Smith

Dorothy Carley Smith, 81, formerly of New York, now residing in Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday August 11, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born November 30, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY., she was a daughter of the late Joseph Thomas Carley and the late Dorothy Popp Carley.

Mrs. Smith served with the U.S. Women’s Army Corp during W.W.II; she was a graduate of Queens College and a retired Spanish teacher at East Rockaway High School.

Her former husband, Walter James Smith, Sr., “Smitty” of Lynchburg survives her.

Mrs. Smith was the mother of three children, Joseph Smith and his wife Nancy of Southold, NY., Walter James Smith, Jr., who preceded her in death, and Barbara Smith-

Large and her husband Richard of Lynchburg; she is also survived by a sister, Margaret C. DeVinney of Roswell. NM. and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday August 13, 2004 in the Garden of Honor of Fort Hill Memorial Park, by the Chaplin of the American Legion Post 16.

Robert N. Mays

Robert N. Mays, 85, of Rustburg, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Mr. Mays is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Lucy Johnson Mays.

Born May 18, 1917 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Robert Nathaniel Mays and the late Sarah Johnson Mays Chumbley. Mr. Mays was retired from the City of Lynchburg and was a member of Perkins Park Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Preston Harris; a great-granddaughter, Sharon Harris, and a brother, Gordon Mays.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mays is survived by three daughters Deveta Harris, Robbie Williams and her husband, Raymond, and Hilda Simonton and her husband, Bob; six grandchildren, Debbie, John, Jr., Diane, Robert, Wanda, and Lisa; eleven great-grandchildren, Alan, Angie, Brandy, Michael, Nathan, John, III, Whitney, Keith, Katherine, Leighton, and Madison; one great-great-grandchild, Jessika and one sister, Ruby Thomas.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel by Dr. Jim Moon. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7- 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Lyn Dan Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Kathleen Blackwell Huffman

Kathleen Blackwell Huffman, 85, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday May 20, 2003 at Heritage Green of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late George Nelsie Huffman for sixty-one years.

Born December 23, 1917 in Appomattox County, she was a daughter of the late James William Blackwell and Ila Martin Blackwell; in addition, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Rachel B. Thomas, Zettie H. Vassar, Myrtle B. Carey, and Caroline B. Vaughan and brother, W. Carl Blackwell.

Mrs. Huffman retired from Sears after twenty five years service, and was a member of the Sears Retiree Club; she was a member of the Fairview Christian Church, the Loyal Sons and Daughters Class, the Dayspring Singers, the Stitch and Chatter Club, and enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels.

She is survived by two daughters, Kaye H. Ragland and husband Bob of Lynchburg, and Linda H. Cox and husband Bryan of Alexandria; a sister, Martha B. “Bebo” Ramsey of Old Fort, TN.; two grandchildren, Christopher Cox of Annandale and Timothy Cox of Reston.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday May 23, 2003 at Fairview Christian Church, with the Rev. R.W. “Bob” Rueter, pastor and Jean Reynolds, parrish minister, officiating.Burial will follow in Liberty cemetery, Appomattox.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at her daughter Kaye’s home, 295 West Ridge Circle.

Memorial contributions may be made to Troop 4, Boy Scouts of America, c/o Fairview Christian Church, 2701 Campbell Ave., Lynchburg.

Marvin Clay Bumgarner

Marvin Clay Bumgarner, 89, of 299 Bumgarner Drive, Forest, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, September 6, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Peggy Watson Bumgarner.

Born June 8, 1914 in Watauga County, NC, he was the son of the late Christopher and Rebecca Grogan Bumgarner. He was retired from Simplimatic Engineering, a member of American Legion Post 16, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Bumgarner was a member of Living Word Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori B. Laughlin and two brothers, Dallas and Lonnie Bumgarner.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bumgarner is survived by two daughters, Audrey B. Osborne of Ocala, FL and Beverly B. Daniels of Forest; six grandchildren, Brandon Muller, Lacey Muller, Christopher Laughlin, Katelyn Osborne, Nathan Osborne, and Tyler Clay Daniels; three sisters, Pansy B. Porter and Essie Paulette, both of Forest and Mae Owen of Bedford; five brothers, Leroy C. Bumgarner, also of Forest, Maynard Bumgarner, Charles Bumgarner, and Abner Bumgarner, all of Lynchburg and James Bumgarner of Uganda, South Africa.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Jason Suitt. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow in Virginia Memorial Park, Forest.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

The family requests those wishing to make memorial contributions to please consider the Gideons International or Living Word Baptist Church.

James "Pete" Franklin III

James "Pete" Franklin III, 68, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2003.

Born August 17, 1935, he was a son of the late James Edward Franklin, Jr., and Marguerite Hudson Franklin. A daughter, Mary Marguerite Franklin, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Franklin was retired from Mead/ Rock Tin Company after many years of service. He attended Temple Baptist Church, was a member of the Moose Lodge post 715, as well as a member of Retreads Motorcycle club.

Survivors include his wife of over 20 years, Nancy Gillispie Franklin, two daughters, Vickie Franklin Essex, and Cynthia Jane Franklin, both of Lynchburg; five step-children, Michelle Creasy and husband Dave, Bobby East, Timothy East and wife Carla, Wayne East and wife Candice, and Michael East and wife Laura; four grandchildren, Michael Scott Campbell III and wife Susan, Brent Elliott Lordahl, Brandon Todd Lordahl, and Lauren Brooke Hicks; two great grandchildren, Mikayla Campbell and Cyrus Campbell; six step- grandchildren, Katie, Jason, Amber, Kristen, Raven and Britney; two step- great grandchildren, Blake and Chase; one sister, Joan Franklin Smith; and one brother, Gerald Grayson Franklin, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, January 3, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Reverend J.D. Surbaugh, and Reverend Terry W. Wornstaff, officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Monelison Rescue Squad, and the Temple Baptist Church building fund.

George G. Trent

George G. Trent, 90, of Lynchburg, died Saturday morning, April 3, 2004. Born January 21, 1914 in Campbell County, he was the son of the late George Edward Trent and the late Brighty Dooly Trent. Mr. Trent was a retired employee of 23 years from Glamorgan Foundry. He was a veteran of the Army and Navy and served in the South Pacific in WWII. He was a faithful member of the Men’s Bible Class of Fairview Christian Church and was also an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge #135, American Legion Post #16 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Gil was well known for winning the great walk-a-thon of 1935 after walking 2, 136 hours at the Merry Garden.

In addition to his parents, Gil was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester Trent and Elbert Trent; three sisters, Lucille Trent Inge, Helen Trent Colbert and Rosa “Doug” Trent Brown; and one grandson, Marcus C. Trent.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Ruth Smith Trent of Lynchburg; three sons, Johnny Trent of Annandale, VA, Joe and Martha Trent of Altavista, VA, and Roger and Debora Trent of Forest, VA; seven grandchildren, Jay and Melissa Trent, Sean and Barbara Trent, Joe Jr. and Wrenda Trent, Jeffrey Trent, Jamie Trent, Amanda Trent, Candace Trent and Jade Key; seven great grandchildren, Bobby, Melissa, Jeremy, Abigale, Hannah, Kassandra and Tabitha; several nieces and nephews; and three devoted sisters-in-law, Elna Stanley, Nora Tweedy and Gladys Clements.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a great friend to many. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 5, 2004 at Fairview Christian Church, Rev. D. Jack Hamilton. Interment, with full military honors provided by American Legion Post #16, will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m., today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times and the Trent residence.

Memorial donations may be directed to the American Heart Assoc., the American Cancer Society or the Fairview Christian Church Men’s Fellowship.

Jack Nelson Overman, Jr.

Jack Nelson Overman, Jr., 52, of Lynchburg, died Monday, August 2, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

He was born June 21, 1952 in Lynchburg, and is survived by his mother, Dora Stevens Overman Millner of Lynchburg. His father was the late Jack Nelson Overman, Sr. Jack attended Timberlake Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Betty Moring and husband Mike of Evington; a niece, Kathy Byrd and husband Lee of Rustburg; a nephew, Robby Johnson and wife Missy of Evington, five great nieces and nephews, Brandon Byrd of Rustburg, Cody and Cadie Johnson both of Evington and Jordan and Corey Byrd both of Rustburg; and a special cousin, Linda Bryant and husband Walt of Lynchburg.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Spring Hill cemetery.

Family visitation will be Wednesday from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the home of his sister at 324 Leesville Hills Road, Evington.

Callie Shockley Spence

Callie Shockley Spence, 86, of Lynchburg, devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2006 peacefully at her residence. She was the widow of Ross Delmer Spence. Born March 29, 1919, in Carroll County, she was a daughter of the late Rush and Rhoda Huff Shockley; in addition, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Spence and was a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Shirley S. Angus and her husband James of Madison Heights, Roberta S. Rhyne and her husband Bill of Kingston, TN, and Virginia S. Noel and her husband Wilson of Forest; a brother, Alfred L. Shockley and his wife Barbara of Hillsville; seven grandchildren, Gary W. Angus and his wife Kim, Larry D. Angus, Jimmy E. Angus and his wife Pat, Faith A. Lyons, Billy Rhyne, Jr., Mike H. Rhyne and his wife Wendy, and Amanda B. Noel; eight great-grandchildren and a number of devoted nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2006, at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. Anthony C.Busic, pastor of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Julia Warren Williams

Julia Warren Williams, 84, of Columbus, GA and presently residing in Lynchburg, passed away Weds., Nov. 8, 2006 at Avante' at Lynchburg. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Henry Ellis Williams, Jr.

Born June 21, 1922 in Goshen, AL, she was the daughter of the late Charles Artemus Warren and the late Mamie Lee McCormick Warren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Susannah Thomas Williams; one brother, Joe Martin Warren; and by one brother-in-law, John Jones.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Linda Williams Freeland and husband Larry of Dawsonville, GA, Ellis Warren Williams and wife Marilyn of Cordele, GA, Gary Thomas Williams and wife Beth of Coleman Falls, VA and Thaddeus Martin Williams and wife Cindy of Conyers, GA; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Bostelman, Julie Goodrow and husband Joel, Walter Williams, Hannah Williams, Rachel Williams, Caleb Williams, Lindsey Williams, Brent Williams and Brandon Williams; two great grandchildren, Colin Bostelman and Elena Goodrow; three sisters, Martha Jones of Dothan, AL, Mary Flowers and husband William of Prattville, AL, and Margaret Phipps and husband Sam of Goshen, AL; one brother, Charles Warren and wife Sandra of Mobile, AL; as well as extended Lynchburg family, including the Richards family and the Slagle Home family.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Sat., Nov. 11, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, by Dr. Walter Smith. Interment will be on Monday at Evergreen Memory Gardens, Columbus, GA.

The family will receive friends today from 7 – 8:30 p.m., at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Charles Earl Haley

Msgt. Charles Earl Haley, U.S.A.F. (retired), 81, formerly of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003 at his residence in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Born June 20, 1921, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Coleman “Pron” Haley and the late Marie Wells Haley. Mr. Haley had retired from the US Air Force having served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the Ft. Walton Beach, Fla V.F.W. and Elks Lodge and Chapel 2 at Elgin Air Force Base. Mr. Haley dearly loved his sisters and all his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by: three sisters; Irma Clark and Mary Ann Mann both of Lynchburg and Elnora Morabito of Glouster as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 15, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Reverend Jan Weston. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.

Family visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his nephew at 134 Londonberry Road, Forest.

The family would like to remember and all of Earl’s good friends in Ft. Walton Beach and especially John and Jean Rudinsky and Ed and Dot Estes who cares for and loved him to the end.
