Dr. Aubrey R. Moon, Jr

After a seventeen year battle with leukemia, Dr. Aubrey R. Moon, Jr. died on Sunday, April 4, 2004. He was the husband of June Elder Moon.

Dr. Moon was born February 11, 1934, in Lynchburg, Virginia, a son of the late Aubrey R. Moon, Sr. and Mary Doris Stone Moon. He received his B.A. from Lynchburg College, his M.S. from the University of Tennessee, and his doctorate in education from West Virginia University. Dr. Moon joined the faculty of Lynchburg College in 1961 where he taught health, movement science and recreation courses. He served as a coach of men’s basketball, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track. He also founded the women’s track program and ended his career with championships in women’s softball. Dr. Moon was named Old Dominion Athletic Coach of the Year in a variety of sports twelve different times over the course of his thirty-six year tenure at Lynchburg College. He was named to the Lynchburg College Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, and in 1994 was presented the prestigious T. Gibson Hobbs Award for significant contributions to his church, his community, and his alma mater. Dr. Moon held the position of department chair and director of intercollegiate and intramural activities at Lynchburg College from 1979-1989.

Dr. Moon was an active member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church for forty-five years, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, trustee, member of the Lord’s Supper committee and the choir.

Dr. Moon taught first-aid and CPR for the American Red Cross. He also officiated high school sports and was honored in 1989 with the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia High School League Coaches Association for more than thirty years of service as a game official and supporter of the league. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Virginia Alcohol and Safety Action Program. Dr. Moon was an instructor for the 55 Alive Driver Safety Program sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP.)

Dr. Moon loved sports of all kinds and throughout the years coached a number of youth baseball teams. He was also an avid fan of the sports programs for both Lynchburg College and the University of Virginia.

Through his community service, teaching, coaching, directing, and refereeing high school sports, Dr. Moon set an example of a Christian life by his actions and positive influence on many people’s lives.

He was preceeded in death by his father, Aubrey R. Moon, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Mary Doris Stone Moon of Lynchburg, his wife, June Elder Moon of Lynchburg, three children, Debbie Moon Vermillion of Charlottesville and her husband, John C. Vermillion, Jr., Sherri Moon Johnson of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina and her husband, Jimmy Johnson, and Bret Russell Moon of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Hunter C. Vermillion, Andrew T. Vermillion, Colby J. Johnson, Aubree-Ann Johnson, and Gabrielle N. Moon; two brothers, Norman K. Moon and his wife Barbara of Lynchburg, Mitchell S. Moon and his wife Laura of Berlin, Maryland, and one sister, Ann M. Hargett and her husband David of Annapolis, Maryland.

The family will receive friends at Whitten’s Timberlake Chapel from 7 - 9 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2004. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at West Lynchburg Baptist Church, the corner of Memorial Avenue and Eldon Street. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Memorial gifts may be made either to West Lynchburg Baptist Church, 3031 Memorial Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia 24501 or to the Aubrey R. Moon, Jr. Memorial Athletic Fund, Lynchburg College, 1501 Lakeside Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia 24501.

The Moon family gratefully acknowledges the kind and heroic efforts of the doctors and nurses of the Lynchburg Hematology-Oncology Clinic, Inc., the University of Virginia Cancer Center, and the Outpatient Clinic and Mundy 5 of the Virginia Baptist Hospital.

James Nelson Coleman

James Nelson Coleman, 86, of Monroe, passed away, Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Cornelia Womack Coleman.

He was born April 6, 1918 in Stapleton, the son of the late Wiley N. Coleman, Sr., and the late Ola Martin Wingfield Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe, the T. Wiley Davis Oddfellows Lodge and the Monroe Ruritan Club. He was also a charter member of the Monelison Rescue Squad.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wiley N. Coleman, Jr., and Willie W. Coleman.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia C. Norwood and husband John of Madison Heights and Christie C. Hines and husband Jeffrey of Monroe; five grandchildren, Melissa Norwood of Amherst, Christopher Hines and wife Leigh Ann, James Hines and wife Brooke, Mark Hines and wife Lindsay and Jennifer Hines all of Monroe; three great grandsons, Dylan, Dawson and Caden Hines all of Monroe; four brothers, Virgil A. Coleman and wife Margie, Thomas E. Coleman and wife Joyce, Alfred B. Coleman and wife Becky and Curtis B. Coleman; two sisters, Elizabeth C. Brizendine and Christine C. Hutchison and husband Marion; a sister-in-law, Eunice W. Worsham; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Rev. Glynn A. Coleman. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 7 – 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Christie, at 384 Gun Mountain Dr., Monroe.

Jesse Thomas Cunningham, Jr.

Jesse Thomas Cunningham, Jr., 68, of Lynchburg, passed away Sat., Nov. 11, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Irby Cunningham.

Born June 11, 1938 in Long Island, VA, he was the son of the late Jesse Thomas Cunningham, Sr., and the late Alise Francis Cunningham. Jesse was proprietor of the Airport Shell Station and more recently Jesse’s Towing. He was a charter member of the Lynchburg Moose Lodge.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Tammy Cunningham of Lynchburg and Teresa Cunningham of Forest; one son Jeff Cunningham of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Meghan, Corey, Dexter, Amber and Nick; three sisters, Bonnie Ward of Brookneal, Gloria (Calvin) Kelly of South Boston and Audrey (Billy) Smith of Lynchburg; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family sends a special thank you to a special friend and our physician, Dr. Joe Khoury, and to the wonderful staff at the Lynchburg General Hospital M.I.C.U.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Weds., Nov. 15, 2006 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Morgan Chewning. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 – 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

Aubrey Cecil Cofflin

Aubrey Cecil Cofflin, 73, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003 at his home.

Born August 6, 1929, in Amherst County, he was the son of the late James Milton Cofflin and the late Callie Pugh Cofflin. Mr. Cofflin was a Baptist and was a US Army veteran.

Mr. Cofflin is survived by: his wife of 46 years Annie Newton Cofflin of Lynchburg, a daughter; Patricia Garrett and husband James of Pickerington, Ohio, two sons; David Cofflin and wife Patricia of Forest and Mark Cofflin and wife Rebecca of Christiansburg and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday February 10, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Reverend Bobby L. Wood, Pastor of Sandusky Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Family visitation will be from 3 - 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the family home at 7107 Morton Dr., Lynchburg.

James Wilbur Kyser

James Wilbur Kyser, 70, of Madison Heights, died Thursday, May 22, 2003 at his residence. He was the husband of Jenny H. Kyser.

He was born in Orange, VA, on October 18, 1932 and was a son of the late Arthur L. and Eva Sparks Kyser. Jim was formerly employed with the Independent Life & Accident Insurance Company and attended Leawood Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, James A. Kyser of Lynchburg; three daughters, Rebecca Transou and her husband Tracy of Lynchburg, Gail Morris and her husband Edgar of Schuyler and Diane White of Charlottesville; three step children, Troy Harris and his wife Charlotte of Lynchburg and Victoria Stinnett and her husband Richard and Donna Garrett and her husband Alan all of Amherst; one sister, Barbara Gibson and her husband Harold of Fla.; four brothers, Arthur L. Kyser, Jr. and his wife Peggy and Ray Kyser and his wife Irene all of Fla., Dale Kyser and his wife Lois and Danny Kyser and his wife Diane all of Charlottesville; his mother-in-law, Eva Crouch of Lynchburg and ten grandchildren. He is also survived by two dear friends, Dot and Goldie Dooley and all of his friends at Dudley’s Restaurant.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday from Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Lenn Lloyd officiating. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Lona Gray Mason

Lona Gray Mason, 42, of Chapel Grove Road, Evington, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2003 to enter eternal peace.

At the young age of 15 she wed Sammy Ray Mason, dedicating her life to him and becoming the mother to Sammy Ray Mason, II and wife Tish, Bruce Glenn Mason and Joey Dillard Mason. Lona was the proud grandmother to Alexia “Alley Cat” Martin and Deon “Shay Baby” Mason whom she adored every minute with. Lona’s dog Pretty Boy will greatly miss his master. All survive her.

Born May 30, 1961 in Bedford County, she was the daughter of Maycell Overstreet and step-daughter of Daniel “Duke” Overstreet. Lona was the youngest of her siblings, Jeanie Prior and husband Cliff, Virginia “Cookie” Neblett and husband Powell, Sandra “Kitten” Layne, Tony Floyd and wife Brenda and Bruce Floyd and wife Betty all survive her. She leaves behind a numerous amount of brother and sister in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Lona worked hard all her life dedicating her time as an employee at Framatone ANP and anyone who needed her help. She was a care giver for her in-laws Aubrey and Essie until their passing. She was a wonderful woman who enjoyed life and making crafts as a hobby. Lona will be greatly missed by all who survive.

Family and friends are welcomed for visitation from 7 - 9 p.m., today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the family home at 456 Chapel Grove Road, Evington

Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, following which, at Lona’s request, she will be cremated.

April Terry Moses

April Terry Moses, 36, wife of Keith Moses of Amherst, VA, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg Virginia.

April will be missed by her loving husband, Keith Moses; her family in West Virginia and in North Carolina; her many friends, neighbors and co-workers; and all those who ever knew her. She'll be missed, but never forgotten-especially her radiant smile and infectious laugh. She'll always be remembered for her stunning blue eyes and warm smile, unmatched enthusiasm, a personality that brightens the room and an ability to lift anyone's spirits.

Though her life was shortened by illness, she lived it to the fullest. She genuinely had a deep care and compassion for all those that came in contact with, and was loved dearly by her coworkers, family and friends.

Born April 1, 1967, in Beckley, W. VA, April was a daughter of George Terry Sr. and the late Freida Walker Terry. She grew up in Oceana, W. VA, among the youngest of eight siblings. Upon moving to Virginia, she met her husband and began a successful career. She was Safety Director for Counts and Dobyns, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA.

Surviving are husband, Keith Moses, of Amherst; step-daughter, Alisa Moses, of Fayetteville, NC; father, George Terry, Sr., of Oceana, W. VA; three brothers, George Terry II and wife Debbie, of Oceana, W. VA, Tim Terry and wife Jackie, of Spring Grove, VA, and John Terry and wife Phillis, of Aylett, VA; four sisters, Linda Lilly and husband Delano, of Colonial Heights, VA, Brenda Arrington and husband Tim of Glen Daniel, W. VA, Joy Williams and husband Robert, of Oceana, W. VA, and Heather Chambers and husband Bobby, of Mt. Airy, NC; thirteen nieces and nephews and thirteen great- nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to her many beloved friends, especially Lisa Lambert Edmonson, of Fredericksburg, VA, Cheryl and Dell Delong, of Amherst, and the wonderful people of Counts and Dobyns Inc., whose love and support are greatly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the University of Virginia Cancer Center, P.O. Box 400807, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4807, in April's honor.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, January 2, 2004, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, at 6:30 p.m., with Kenneth C. Bost officiating. Interment will be in Palm Memorial Gardens, in Matheny West, VA. Whitten Funeral Home and Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family will receive friends after the service, and at other times at the residence.

Danny Ray Neighbors

Danny Ray Neighbors, 43, went to be with his Lord, Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at Central Virginia Training Center, where he had made his home for the past 39 years.

He was born May 28, 1961 in Lynchburg, and was the son of Burleigh M. Dalton and Myrtle Harris Neighbors Dalton of Madison Heights, and the late Earl J. Neighbors.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Belinda Swecker and her husband, Carlos of Glen Allen, and Tracy Ference and her husband George of Austin, TX; a brother, Terry Dalton and his wife Betty of Rocky Mount; two nieces, Tina and Tonya Swecker; and two nephews, Jared and Scott Ference.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., today, Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Rev. Donald Stein.

His parents welcome family and friends to their home at 118 Cloverdale Dr., Madison Heights.

Danny’s parents and family would like to give special thanks to the staff and aides at Central Virginia Training Center for their unconditional love and care and to the Lynchburg General Hospital nurses and doctors, especially Drs. Lockridge and Giles for their exceptional care and concern.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Amherst Dialysis Center or the Skilled Care Ward at Central Virginia Training Center.

Myrtle M. Ball

Myrtle M. Ball, 85, of 220 Mountain View Drive, Madison Heights, died Tuesday, January 3, 2005 at her home. She was the wife of the Rev. Rex Leon Ball for sixty-six years.

Born February 15, 1920 in Gilmer County, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Snyder. Mrs. Ball was the wife of a Methodist minister that devoted her life and time to her church, as well as countless hours helping others. She was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ina Ruth McCloud; a granddaughter, Sandra McCloud; four brothers and two sisters.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Ronnie L. Ball of Hamlin, West Virginia; three daughters, Marty Bennett of Craigsville, West Virginia, and Marion Freerks and her husband, Martin and Janet Davis and her husband, Tim, both of Madison Heights; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Entombment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Bruce Myers Staton

Bruce Myers Staton, 21, of Monroe, died Friday, November 10, 2006 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

Born July 31, 1985 in Lynchburg, he was the son of Brenda Winfield Staton Kessler of Monroe and the late Danny Myers Staton and the step-son of Charles Kessler. Bruce was a 2004 graduate of Amherst High School and was employee of Armstrong Electric Co., Inc. Bruce was a member of Believers Fellowship.

In addition to his mother and step-father, Bruce is survived by two brothers, Donald Tucker Swift (Tiffany) and Thomas L. Roach (Courtney), all of Evington; one step-brother, Drewry Kessler of Charlottesville; his grandfather, F.M Staton, Jr. of Madison heights; four nieces, Destiny Swift, Hannah Swift, Truth Swift, and Faith Roach; four aunts, Wanda McCormick (Jr.), Rose Harper (Reuben), Shirley J. Staton, and Sue Daniel (John); five uncles, Michael W. Staton (Angie), Curtis E. Staton, James H. Crist (Lois), Gerald Winfield (Becky), and David Winfield and many special cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. John Bullock. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant U.M. Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department.
