W. Paul Wassum

W. Paul Wassum, 72, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday March 23, 2004, at Avant’e of Lynchburg. He was the husband of the late Mary Frances Wood Wassum.

Born May 12, 1931 in Williamson, W.VA, he was a son of the late William E. Wassum and the late Ethel Marie White Wassum.

Mr. Wassum was a retired educator with the Cabell County West Virginia School System and a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church .

He is survived by two sons, Greg P. Wassum and his wife Susie of Lynchburg, and W. Brad Wassum and his wife Tina of Barboursville, W.VA.; a brother, G. Carl Wassum and his wife Ann of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Ann W. Clark of Pensacola, Fl. and Sue Sutphin and her husband Craig of Allen, TX; three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Wassum, Daniel Paul Wassum and Andrew James Wassum.

A Liturgy of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. today, March 25, 2004 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with the Rev. James Dorson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum of Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 Roundelay Road, Lynchburg.

Frances L. Jamerson

Frances L. Jamerson, of Lynchburg, was lifted by Angles to Heaven to dwell forever with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Tuesday morning, July 27, 2004. She was the widow of Jack Jamerson.

Born April 28, 1924 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Edward Kidd, Sr. and the late Alma Giles Kidd. In addition, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Jamerson was the founder and owner of Jamerson’s Adult Care Home and a member of Temple Baptist Church of Madison Heights.

She was the loving mother of three daughters, Barbara Hartless and her husband Pastor Johnny Hartless of Charlottesville, Rebecca Thacker and her husband Wayne Thacker of Lynchburg, Brenda Doss and her husband James Doss of Appomattox; and one son, Jim Laughlin and his wife Lynn of Naola; also surviving are a brother, Fredrick Kidd of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Dorothy Burks of Madison Heights and Charlotte Thomas of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday July 29, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Pastor Johnny Hartless and the Rev. Earl Clarkson officiating.

Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Irene Virginia Hall Blankenship

Irene Virginia Hall Blankenship, 83, of the Summit, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday November 17, 2004. She was the wife of the late Jessie Curtis Blankenship; they were married in Rustburg, December 20, 1939.

Born July 19, 1921 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Larkin Vinton Hall and the late Annie Witt Hall; also preceding her in death were a son-in-law, Thomas D. Jamerson, whom she loved very much; a great-granddaughter, MacKenzi Leigh Harris, two brothers, Ernest and Woodrow Hall, and a sister, Gladys Anderson.

Mrs. Blankenship was a devoted member of Leesville Road Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Donald C. Blankenship of Lynchburg, Kenneth L. Blankenship and his wife Jennifer of Hartsville, SC, Nancy B. Jamerson of Lynchburg, Patricia B. Eubank and her husband Cecil of Bedford, and Anita B. Large and her husband Frank of Bedford; two brothers; three sisters; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday November 20, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Dr. Carl Diemer officiating. Burial will follow in Evington United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at her daughter Anita's home, 3294 Pecks Road, Bedford.

Anita Simmons Watkins

Anita Simmons Watkins, 69, of Reidsville, N.C. and former owner/operator of the C.& S. Cafe for 25 years in Lynchburg, died Tuesday, Mar. 14, 2006, in Winston-Salem, NC.

Born in Lynchburg September 19, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John Albert Simmons and the late Ruby Bell Simmons.

After she left Lynchburg she retired as an employee for the Guilford Co. School System.

She is survived by her former husband, Harvey Lee "Bunny" Watkins of Salem, VA; two sons, Junior Watkins and Jerry Watkins, both of Forest, VA; one daughter, Elizabeth W. Davidson and her husband, Kenneth, of Salisbury, NC; one brother, John Simmons of Texas; one sister, Linda Patino of Reidsville, NC; five grandchildren, Kenneth Davidson, Keith Davidson, Greg Davidson, Ashlinne Watkins and Lianna Watkins; one former daughter-in-law, Susan Page Coleman and her best friend since childhood, Mary Fields of Lynchburg.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Mar. 17, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and Cremation Service by Dr. Jim Moon. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends today, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Charles Roger Pollard

Charles Roger Pollard, 73, of Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2006 at Virginia Baptist Hospital, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Pat Pollard.

Born March 13, 1933, in Charlotte County, he was the son of the late James Roger Pollard and Lilly Morrison Pollard. Mr. Pollard was a United States Navy, Korean War Veteran and was retired from Concrete Pipe and Products Co. as a Plant Foreman after 39 years of service. He attended Temple Baptist Church and was a member of Woodmen of the World.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, James David Pollard.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four children, Michael Pollard of Rustburg, C. Greg Pollard and wife, Sandra of Arrington, Donna Pollard of Forest and W. David Pollard and wife, Christie of Concord; a sister, Doris P. Gibson of Forest, 8 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great grandchild and one step-great grandchild, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Earl Clarkson and Pastor J.D. Surbaugh. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.

The family would like to thank Dr. Oldham and his staff at Lynchburg Hematology-Oncology Clinic and the nurses at Centra Health Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Mr. Pollard.

Solomon Louis Feinman

Solomon Louis Feinman, 87, of Albuquerque, NM and formerly of Lynchburg and West Orange, NJ, died peacefully, Saturday, June 10, 2004 at his residence in New Mexico. He was the husband of the late Gertrude Gallen Goldberg Feinman.

He was born April 20, 1917 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Abraham Feinman and the late Elisabeth Fisher Feinman. Mr. Feinman was employed by “The Vogue” on Main St. in Lynchburg, which was owned by his brother, Joseph Feinman. He was a graduate of Lynchburg College, where he was captain of the basketball team and later attained a black belt in Judo. After college, Louis moved to New York where he continued his career in the clothing industry as comptroller of Wellmade Playwear, Inc., a large children’s clothing manufacturer owned by friend, Jack Herwitz.

Louis is survived by two loving step-sons, David Goldberg of Santa Fe, NM and Marc Mandon of Ashville, NC, and their families, as well as many loving Feinman family relatives in the Lynchburg area.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Beth Joseph Agudath Shalom cemetery, Madison Heights, by Rabbi Tom Gutherz.

Dolores Smoil Donnelly

Dolores Smoil Donnelly, 74, of Lynchburg, died Thursday November 4, 2004 following a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of George Stewart Donnelly for 47 years.

Born May 23, 1930 in Mt.Vernon, New York, she was a daughter of the late John and Marian Meskill Smoil.

Mrs. Donnelly was a retired secretary and L.P.N., she was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2004 in Presbyterian cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Willoughby and Dr. J. Kenneth Rogers officiating.

Friends may visit at the residence, 709 Sandusky Drive, Lynchburg.

Calvin Thomas Hodges, Sr.

Calvin Thomas Hodges, Sr., 85, of Forest, loving husband and father, passed gently into the arms of Jesus, Friday, March 3, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Ashwell Hodges.

Born April 1, 1920 in Bedford County, he was the son of the late Richard Gordon Hodges and the late Helen Mitchell Hodges. Mr. Hodges was a longtime member and a faithful worker at his church, Lebanon United Methodist Church. He had retired from Craddock & Terry Shoe Co. and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He loved the outdoors and after retirement enjoyed working at London Downs Golf Club and Greenview Nursery.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Melva D. Creasey, Cora E. Cumby and Evelyn M. Mahone.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Barbara Puryear and husband Joe of Washington, NC, Jeanette Pickrel and husband Freddie and Shirley Miear and husband Ronnie both of Forest; one son, Calvin T. "Tommy" Hodges, Jr. and wife Louise of Gretna; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2006 at Lebanon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Norman Ramsey. Interment will follow in the Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery.

Family visitation will be today, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the family residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lebanon United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4565 New London Road, Forest, VA 24550 or your local rescue squad.

Samuel Thomas Cumbie, Jr.

Samuel Thomas Cumbie, Jr., 84, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, October 15, 2006 following a short illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Blankenship Cumbie, who died April 30, 2005. Born February 12, 1922 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Samuel Thomas Cumbie, Sr. and the late Annie Riley Cumbie; his brother, Leo Wilson Cumbie also preceded him in death. Mr. Cumbie was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp.; he retired from General Electric, and was a member of Leawood Baptist Church. He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne C. Wooldridge and her husband Richard of Madison Heights; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 19, 2006, at Spring Hill cemetery, with the Rev. Lenn E. Lloyd officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 16. Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Whitten Park Ave. Chapel, and at other times at his daughter’s residence, 914 Possum Island Road, Madison Heights. Memorial contributions may be made to Leawood Baptist Church, 345 Munford Street, Lynchburg, VA 24501

Ruby Bethel Pribble

Ruby Bethel Pribble, 93, of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2004.

Arrangements are incomplete. Whitten Monelison Chapel is serving the family.

Jeanette Lorraine Derse Riddel

Jeanette Lorraine Derse Riddel, 82, of 213 Stonehouse Road, Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2005, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born January 16, 1922, in Racine, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of the late Louis A. Derse and Violet Derse Schmidt. She was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice E. Utecht and a stepfather Adelbert E. Schmidt.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, she is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John H. Riddel, one son, Jeffrey H. Riddel of Woodbridge, VA, two daughters, Jennifer J. Riddel of Lynchburg and Lori R. Harrison and her husband Larry of Forest, VA, a brother-in-law, Everett Utecht of Cincinnati, OH, 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Riddel was a 1943 graduate of Beloit College in Wisconsin and a lifelong homemaker. She served as a representative to the Lynchburg Arthritis Foundation from 1977 to 1979. She was a member of the Timberlake United Methodist Church, the First Presbyterian Church, and the Daughters of the Eastern Star. A kind and gentle soul, Mrs. Riddel loved all animals and nature. Everyone that knew her loved her and those who knew her well loved her even more.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 2:30 PM at the Timberlake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Larry Davies officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Caring for Creatures at 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, Virginia 22963, (434) 842-2404.

Mary Virginia Pickens Dreher

Mary Virginia Pickens Dreher, 63, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005at Lynchburg General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Donald H. Dreher.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, August 5, 1941, she was a daughter of the late John and Marie Pickering Pickens. Mary was a retired R.N. from Manchester Medical Center in Manchester, Connecticut. She earned her Masters of Science degree from Charter Oak College in Connecticut. She was a member of the Virginia Nursing Association and Holy Cross Catholic Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Douglas Dreher and his wife Kyoung of Korea and Patrick Dreher of Monroe; two daughters, Susan Dreher and her husband Gregg Markarian of New York, NY and Traci Dreher of Boston, Mass.; one brother, Robert Pickens and his wife Evelena of Thurston, OH; four sisters, Barbara Sherburne and her husband Sayword of New Port Richie, Fla., Carol Black of Safety Harbor, Fla., Judy Buscemi and her husband Tom of West Jefferson, OH, and Katy Kurash and her husband John of Winter Park, Fla.; four grandchildren, James Dreher, Laura Dreher, Katie Dreher and Jeffrey Dreher and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with a Christian Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. led by Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2005 at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 3, 2005 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Spence Funeral Home in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider American Diabetes Association.
