Samuel H. “Sammie” Arthur, Jr.

Samuel H. “Sammie” Arthur, Jr., 58, of Lynchburg, died Friday September 12, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Barbara W. Arthur.

Born March 23, 1945 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Samuel Holcomb Arthur, Sr. and Daisy Coffey Arthur.

Sammie was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he retired from B.W.X. Tech- nologies, Inc. and was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by his son, Dr. Michael W. Arthur and his wife Dr. Christy L. Arthur of Carrollton, KY; two sisters, Patricia A. Hendrick and her husband Ronald and Ethel A. Burnette and her husband Marshall all of Lynchburg; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Purvis and her husband Ron of Chantilly; four nieces, Jennifer P. Tajnai and her husband Mark of Fairfax, Marsha B. Best and her husband Hank of Forest, Rhonda Haworth and her husband Gary of Lynch Station, and Deborah Humphrey and her husband Bibb of Maryville, TN; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday September 16, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the Rev. Ernie Carey. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at his sister’s home, 613 Middle Street, Lynchburg.

Louis Howard

Louis Howard, 79, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2004. Born February 5, 1924, he was a son of the late David and Mary Layne Howard. Mr. Howard was retired from H. and H. Sons, Inc., having owned and operated the business for many years. He was a United States Army Infantry Regiment veteran, having served in W.W. II, a member of Amelon United Methodist Church, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2515, as well as the American Legion, post 141. Two brothers, George and Everette Howard, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Adams Howard; two daughters, Linda H. Duff and husband Ken, and Carolyn H. Bush, both of Madison Heights; two sons, Louis C. Howard, Jr. and wife Kathy, of Rustburg, and Edward A. Howard, of Madison Heights; one brother, Warren Howard, of Amherst; four sisters, Janie H. Hamilton, of Richmond, Frances H. Turner, of Newport News, Elizabeth H. Harris, and Virginia H. Henley, of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Ben, Michael, Danielle, and Anna Duff, Chris and Jonathan Howard, Genny and Catherine Bush.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Reverend Art Woltz, officiating and Reverend Earl Martin assisting. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider the Hospice of the Hills, or Gideons.

Nancy Jarvis Grieser

Nancy Jarvis Grieser, 50, of 499 Colony Road, Madison Heights, died Saturday, August 7, 2004 at her residence.

Born October 16, 1953 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of Pauline Hill Jarvis and the late Jack Russell Jarvis. Nancy was retired from Harris Trucking Co. and a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Donald Grieser of Madison Heights and John Grieser of Parris Island, SC; one sister, Kathy Ware and her husband, Kenneth and one niece, Chelsie Ware, all of Forest.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Dr. Timothy Madison.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitten Monelison Chapel, Madison Heights.

Memorial contributions may be made to Madison Heights Baptist Church, 329 Main Street, Madison Heights, 24572.

Andrew Lewis Viar, Sr.

Andrew Lewis Viar, Sr., 80, of Lynchburg, died peacefully Friday, November 17, 2006 at his home.

Born March 24, 1926 in Nelson County, he was a son of the late John Martin Viar and Bessie Lee Martin Viar.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Peggy Trent Viar, he was preceded in death by two sons, Andrew Lewis Viar, Jr., and John Emiel Viar, and seven brothers and sisters.

Mr. Viar was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict; he retired from Mead Corp. and was a member of Park View United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Franklin Eugene Viar, Sr. and his wife Connie, and Garry Wayne Viar; his daughter, Shirley Viar Phillips; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Penny Viar; sisters, Elizabeth King and Winnie Viar.

He also leaves to cherish his precious memory, the ones who could always bring a smile to his face, his grandchildren, Kathryn Michelle Wilkes and her husband Greg, Andrew Lewis Viar, III. and his wife Christie, Littleton Gardner Blanks, IV and his friend Erin Harper, Connie Marie Meeks and her husband Jonathan, and Franklin Eugene Viar, Jr. and his wife Chelsie; and his great-grandchildren, Amber Dean Woody, Littleton Gardner Blanks, V, Taylor Brooke Viar, Ashley Nicole Campbell, Isabella Renae Viar, Olivia Suzanna Viar, Bryson Trent Meeks, Noah Franklin Viar, Gregory Michael Wilkes and Christian Dale Wilkes.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at Park View United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Jeri Bishop.

Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with Military Honors by the American Legion Post 16.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to Park View United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, or Hospice of the Hills, c/o Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Dr. Dennis E. Burns

Dr. Dennis E. Burns, 52, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, April 14, 2003 as a result of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.

Born September 10, 1950 in Hoboken, NJ, he was the son of John H. Burns and Helen Plue Burns both of Bedford. Dr. Burns was a physician and was medical examiner for several surrounding counties. He served his country with the US Army during Vietnam. He was ringside physician for the VA Boxing Commission and was past president of the Lynchburg Magic Club.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Burns is survived by: his wife of 32 years; Karen Condran Burns of Lynchburg, two sons; William E. Burns and wife Carie and Dennis J. Burns both of Lynchburg, three grandchildren; Adrianna, Morgan and Evan Burns all of Lynchburg, a brother; John Burns and wife Amy of NC, a sister-in-law; Joan Burns of NC and was beloved uncle and cousin to many.

Friends and family may visit Thursday from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Grace Barley Wieringo

Grace Barley Wieringo, 91, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2004. She was the wife of the late Walter Leroy Wierengo.

Born February 5, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Henry Barley and Fanny Talbott Barley. She was a member of the Lynchburg Church of Christ and a member of the Rebekah Aid- Lodge # 41.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mary B. Hendricks, Dora B. Hendricks and Virginia Barley and two brothers, Clifton Barley and Claude Barley.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Martin of Evington and an adopted son, Tommy Wierengo, a brother, Early Barley and wife Edith of Lynchburg, two very special friends, Catherine Phillips and Emma Woodford.

A funeral Service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2005 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Reverend Ray Eure and the Reverend Dwight Weaver. . Interment will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2005 in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Bessie Angus Tomlin

Bessie Angus Tomlin, 87, of Madison Heights, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, Friday, February 17, 2006 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Claudie Vaughan Tomlin.

Born May 8, 1918 in Lowesville, she was a daughter of the late John Beuregard and Mary Pearl Campbell Angus. She was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center and was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Tucker, Marion, Morris, John (J.B.), Rawley, and Massie; five sisters, Mae Wright, Annie Campbell, Saphronia Maddox, Susie Dalton, and Elizabeth Maddox and one granddaughter, Cynthia Dawn Cash.

Mrs. Tomlin is survived by four daughters, Mable T. Wood and her husband, “Spicky” of Piney River, Minnie T. Bailey of Amherst, Vernie T. Wood and her husband, Fred of Lowesville, and Juanita T. Cash of Madison Heights; one son, Marion V. Tomlin and his wife, Stephanie, also of Madison Heights; one sister, Eva A. Bowling of Amherst; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr. and the Rev. Terry Wornstaff. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Juanita, 134 Highland Circle, Madison Heights.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Amherst Rescue Squad and the Monelison Rescue Squad.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Amherst and Monelison Rescue Squads and to the staffs of the Johnson Senior Center, Fairmont Crossing, and Lynchburg General Hospital.

Bernice Gulan Michalski

Bernice Gulan Michalski, 87, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 in Gainesville, FL. She was the wife of the late Walter Paul Michalski.

Born November 10, 1915 in Racine, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Rusko Gulan. Mrs. Michalski was retired from Nordstrom Corp. and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and special senior citizens club.

Mrs. Michalski is survived by one daughter, Barbara M. McMillan and her husband, Paul of Palatka, FL; one brother, Bruno Gulan of Zephyrhills, Fla.; four grandchildren, Walter Paul McMillan, Dona Kosegi, Paula Forrest and Rebecca Long and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2003 from Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Catholic cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

Glenn Eric Bryant

Glenn Eric Bryant, 35, of Forest, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Sandra Wagner Bryant.

Born in Lynchburg, November 13, 1968, he was a son of Lawrence and Carol Bryant of Lynchburg. Glenn was employed by Kerr Tire Co. and attended Brookhill Wesleyan Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one son, Landon Eric Bryant, one step-daughter, Whitney Gray and one step-son, Conner Gray all of Forest; two brothers, Tom Bryant of Roanoke and Neal Bryant and his wife Shereé of Appomattox; one sister, Joan Anderson and her husband Greg of Myrtle Beach; his father and mother in law, Dan and Betty Wagner of Goode and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Helen & Tom Mason and Hilda & Vaughn Bryant.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday from Hyland Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Weiser and the Rev. David Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence of his parents, Rita & Carol Bryant.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to a special fund established for the benefit of their son Landon Eric Bryant. Please make your contribution to the Brookhill Wesleyan Church, 1043 Cifax Road, Forest, VA 24551.

Ernest Alvin Floyd

Ernest Alvin Floyd, 67 of Elon, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2004 after a long illness at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lucille Floyd.

Born November 6, 1937, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Ernest P. and Vivian Tomlin Floyd of Pedlar Mills. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the James River Blue Grass Association. Alvin worked many years for Taylor Ramsey Sawmill.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers; James P., Edward E. and P.F.C. Roger L. Floyd, two sisters; Mary Kathleen Floyd and Cora Frances Houston.

Also surviving are two daughters; Sadie A. Lee and husband James of Madison Heights and Melissa M. Powell and husband Steven of Elon, five grandchildren; Amanda, Miranda and Vivian Lee and Caitlyn and Anthony Powell, four sisters; Ruby Branch and husband Earl of Bedford, Ruth Elder and husband Butch of Madison Heights, Kathy Burton and husband Rusty of Monroe and Gladys Peters and husband Ryland of Amherst, a brother, Charles Floyd and wife Claudia of Monroe, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Reverend Earl Clarkson and the Reverend J.D. Surbaugh. Interment will take place in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church cemetery in Pedlar Mills.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Charles Henry Nicholas

Charles Henry Nicholas, 82, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Wilmuth Hall Nicholas.

Born January 23, 1924 in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Montague Mason and Susie Belle Wright Nicholas.

Upon graduating form Holy Cross Academy in 1942, Charles attended Lynchburg College. He also attended Temple University and graduated from Echols College of Mortuary Science, where he was a recipient of the Dean’s Award. He was licensed by the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers in 1945.

Charles was a loyal and dedicated funeral director on the staff of Whitten Funeral Homes, Inc. for more than forty eight years. He was a faithful member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Herman Stevens Bible Class. In 1984, Charles served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board and in 1987 served as Vice-Chairman of the Deacon Board. He was elected as Life Deacon in May 1998. Charles was also a charter member of the Madison Heights Ruritan Club and served on the Amherst County Electoral Board from March 1983 to April 2004.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Montague M. Nicholas, Jr., James S. Nicholas, William T. Nicholas, Joe W. Nicholas and Harris Nicholas and two sisters, Mazie N. Fitzgerald and Evelyn N. Woodson.

In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Sue Simmons and her husband John of Richmond; two sisters, Magdeline N. Morgan Dot N. Allen both of Madison Heights; two grandchildren, Carter and Peyton Simmons and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Falwell officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.
