Larry Edward Blanks

Larry Edward Blanks, 72, of Lynchburg, died Friday, November 12, 2004 at his residence. He was the husband of Alyce Christley Blanks for thirty-six years.

Born February 8, 1932 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Edward H. and Myrtle Wooldridge Blanks. Larry was retired from the Lynchburg News & Advance with forty-two years of service, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of American Legion Post 16, and the Lynchburg Marine Corp. League. He was also a member of Moose Lodge #715, the Lynchburg Shag Club, and the Lynchburg Bowling League. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by one brother, Danny H. Blanks and his wife, Stella of Smith Mountain Lake; two sisters-in-law, Cathryn Williams and June Williams, both of Lynchburg and one brother-in-law, Melvin Matheney and his wife, Virgie of Newfield, New York.

A graveside service with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2004 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Mr. A. Anderson Duck and the Rev. Tim Earnhardt.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. today at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and other times at the home of Alyce’s sister, June, 2108 School Lane, Lynchburg.

Belva Hensley Creasy

Belva Hensley Creasy, 77, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the Summit. She was the wife of Melvin Robert Creasy for 56 years. Born October 15, 1928, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late "Big Daddy" James Albert Hensley and "Big Mama" Mary Crowder Hensley; also three sisters and three brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Creasy was a member of the Forest Chapter # 143, Order of the Eastern Star, and Bethlehem Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Linda Creasy-Harris and husband Larry of Sanford, FL.; three sons, Larry Creasy and wife Billie Sue of Lynchburg, Winfred Creasy of Lynchburg, and Robert Creasy of Forest; two granddaughters, Janell Harris and Arley Creasy; five grandsons, Brian Creasy, Jay Harris, Jonathan Creasy, Matthew Creasy, and Andrew Creasy; one great-granddaughter, Kiana Harris; and one sister, Moselle Miles of Forest. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Dooley officiating. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of Virginia Memorial Park. Visitation for family and friends will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel, with an Order of the Eastern Star service being preformed during visiting hours; friends may call at other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Campbell County Rescue Squad and Fire Dept.

Henry Richard Mahler, Jr.

Henry Richard Mahler, Jr., died on October 24, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at his home at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia. Dr. Mahler was born in Waynesboro, Virginia, on March 20, 1911. He graduated from Thomasville Georgia High School in 1927; attended Washington and Lee University (B.A., 1931; M.A., 1932) and Union Theological Seminary (B.D., 1936; Th.M., 1937; Th.D., 1952), Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) D.D. 1965. He served pastorates in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee before coming to Lynchburg, Virginia in 1967 as Executive Secretary of Appomattox Presbytery and later as General Presbyter of Blue Ridge Presbytery before retiring in 1977. He served as Stated Clerk of Nashville Presbytery and Moderator of the Synod of Tennessee as well as Moderator of Greenbrier and Blue Ridge Presbyteries. Since retirement he has served as supply preacher in a number of churches in Central Virginia, most recently Pisgah Presbyterian. He preached and taught regularly into his 95th year. He has been a contributor of prose articles and poetry to religious and secular periodicals and is the author of Legendary America, a collection of verse about legendary and semi-historical figures in this country. Dr. Mahler is survived by his wife, Beth; a daughter Beth Ann, son Richard and daughter-in-law Pix; son David and daughter-in-law Joan; grandson Aaron and granddaughter-in-law Elisabeth, all of Lynchburg. A service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 11th & Floyd Streets, on Saturday, October 28, 2006, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Presbyterian cemetery. Family visitation will be at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel on Friday, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to Presbyterian cemetery, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Westminster-Canterbury or Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest.

Thomas James Wooldridge

Thomas James Wooldridge, 73, of 3414 South Amherst Highway, Monroe, died Saturday, May 10, 2003 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Ruby Rowsey Wooldridge. Mr. and Mrs. Wooldridge would have celebrated their 45th anniversary in August of this year.

Born July 9, 1929 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late James Edward and Etta Harris Wooldridge. He was a former employee of J.C. Jones and retired from General Electric with thirty years of service. Mr. Wooldridge was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Monroe United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Wooldridge is survived by four sons, John Wooldridge and wife, Rhonda of Amherst, Walter Wooldridge and wife, Linda of Richmond, Mike Wooldridge and wife, Sungmi, and Aubrey Wooldridge and wife, Gauri, all of Lynchburg; two brothers, Edward Wooldridge and wife, Betty of Forest and Hubert Wooldridge of Raleigh, NC; three sisters, Ima Jean Seay and her husband, Gene of Lynchburg, Shirley Tucker and her husband, Norman of Rustburg, and Jewel Moon of Stuarts Draft; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Robert Allen. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Doris Hunt Phillips Harris

Doris Hunt Phillips Harris, 93, of Madison Heights, passed away July 15, 2004, at Hospice of the Hills in Lynchburg.

Born May 16, 1911, in Coleman Falls, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas Hunt and Mary Arthur Hunt. Mrs. Harris was a member of the Madison Heights Christian Church and was retired from Craddock Terry after 40 years of service. Mrs. Harris was also a member of the Quarter Century Club.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harris was also preceded in death by her first husband, Adrian Earl Phillips as well as her second husband, James Lloyd Harris, nine brothers and sisters; Agnes Rhodes, Ethel Mitchell, Ida Tyree, Slyvia Watson, Marion Hill, William Hunt, Marvin Hunt, Ernest Hunt and Charles Hunt as well as two grandchildren; Michael Hines and George Tsoleas.

Survivors include three children, Lynwood E. Phillips and his wife Zandra of Madison Heights, Barbara Hines and her husband Eugene of Morganton, NC and Mary Lou Tsoleas of Bedford, two step children; Ronnie Harris and his wife Carolyn and Michael Harris and his wife Mary Lou, five grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, one great- great grandchild, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July19, 2004, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Reverend Paul Land officiating and Reverend Jack Hamilton assisting. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Lynwood and Zandra Phillips 113 Prescott Place, Madison Heights.

Paul William Blankenship

Paul William Blankenship, 84, of Rustburg, passed away on Friday, Nov. 12, 2004 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 1/2 years, Elizabeth Hobbs Blankenship.

Born Nov. 23, 1919 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Jack Brodie Blankenship and the late Madie Mooney Blankenship. He was a member of Lynchburg South 1727 Moose Family Center.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Robin Blankenship Brown; one granddaughter, Jami Marie Blankenship; three brothers, Clarence “Bud”, Fulton and Glen J. Blankenship; and three sisters, Lucille Marcotte, Edna Austin and Alice Lenk.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Lancaster and Jack M. Lancaster, Jr., of Forest; one son, Paul W. Blankenship, Jr. and wife Barbara of California; one sister, Thelma Lebo of Forest; two grandsons, Michael G. Bong and Nickolas S. Brown of California; two granddaughters, Kristy L. Blankenship of California and April L. DeShano and husband Mark of Lynchburg; two great grandchildren, Darrin and Alexis DeShano of Lynchburg; several nieces and nephews; and one very special Hospice nurse, Paula Hicks.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Timothy Madison. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Family visitation will be from 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the family home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Hills, % Virginia Baptist Hospital, 3300 Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24503.

Walter Justin Magri

Walter Justin Magri, 85, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Nell Elizabeth Saunders Magri.

Born in Lynchburg, June 24, 1920, he was a son of the late Ralph Joseph and Veronica Magri. He was a retired Senior Chief Petty Officer with the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, one brother, Giulio Magri and one sister, Veronica Magri Leddy preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sons, Jerome M. Magri and his wife Ann of Vienna, Neal F. Magri and his wife Virginia of Katy, TX and Walter J. Magri, Jr. of CT; one brother, Ralph J. Magri, Jr. of Lynchburg and four grandchildren, Christopher Magri, Sarah Magri, Joseph Magri and James Magri.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.

There will be a rosary service beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel after which the family will receive friends until 7:00 p.m.

Miss Elizabeth Parker

Miss Elizabeth Parker, 102 ½ of Lynchburg, died Monday, October 23, 2006 at The Carrington.

Born May 28, 1904 in Newport News, she was the daughter of the late Julian Floyd and Mary Upton Parker. After the Parker family relocated to Lynchburg, Miss Parker's mother, not financially able to take care of her children, placed them in the Odd Fellows Home, where they lived for fifteen years. She retired from the Craddock & Terry Shoe Corp., after forty-nine years of service and was a member of Heritage U.M. Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Elbert J. Parker, Sr. and two sisters, Viola Parker Hawkins and Lola Parker Campbell.

Miss Parker is survived by a special and devoted niece, Mary Ann Parker Sitton and her husband, Dennis of Madison Heights; two nephews, Raleigh Lewis Parker and his wife, Janet of Rustburg and Jay Parker, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Lynchburg; great nieces and nephews, Dennis, Jr., Cristina, Chad, Wendy, Jay, III, and Kevin and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m Thursday, October 26, 2006 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Nathaniel B. Habel. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today the funeral home.

Richard L. (Jack) Motley

Richard L. (Jack) Motley, 66, of 2312 Old Forest Road, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, May 10, 2003 at his home. He was the husband of Nancy Jennings Motley for forty-four years.

Born March 2, 1937 in Danville, he was the son of the late Robert Elbert and Georgia Brown Motley. Jack was retired from the Lynchburg Fire Department and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Katie M. Bush.

In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by two sons, Michael Lee Motley and William Joseph Motley and his wife, Debbie; one daughter, Patty M. Fuller and her husband, Charles, all of Lynchburg; one brother, Robert Elbert Motley, Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Danville; one sister, Dorothy M. Noakes and her husband, Dan of Panama City, FL and three grandchildren, Joshua and Luke Motley and Sarah Fuller.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. David Heerspink.

The family will receive friends from 7- 9 p.m. Monday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the residence.

Verna Priscilla Joines

Verna Priscilla Joines, 81, of Gallows Road, Gretna, died Thursday July 15, 2004 following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Robert Odie Joines, Sr.

She is survived by her children, Emma J. McNeil and her husband Paul of Gretna, Phyllis J. Harcrow and her husband Jim of Leesburg, Georgia, and Robert O. Joines and his wife Minyung also of Gretna; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A Memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today, July 17, 2004, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. Andrew P. Gross, pastor of College Hill Baptist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Flora Virginia Doss Walker

Flora Virginia Doss Walker, 80, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at the home of her daughter, 1393 Tye River Road, Tye River. She was the wife of the late Joseph William Walker, who died December 20, 1984.

Born September 9, 1924 in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Albert Sidney and Willie Francis Doss. Mrs. Walker was a member of St. Stephen’s Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Garland, Edgar (Willie), and Clyde Doss.

Mrs. Walker is survived by her devoted daughter, Mary W. Rodgers; her son, Lewis Walker and wife, Diane both of Tye River; her sister, Lila T. Barefoot of Hampton; her five grandchildren, Jim Rodgers, III and wife, Patty, William Rodgers and wife, Janice, Andrew Rodgers and wife, Susan, Adam Walker, and Michele Walker and husband, Scott; her five great-grandchildren, Joseph, Jacob, and Delanie Rodgers all of Tye River and Jack Rodgers and James Payne of Shipman.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Israel W. Stewart, Jr. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Mary, 1393 Tye River Road.

Joe Franklin Houston

Joe Franklin Houston, 71, of Rustburg died Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2006, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born in Pocahontas, VA, July 17, 1934, he was the son of the late Joseph Manning Houston and Emily Ethel Walk Houston. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother, Ethel H. Rush and Buddy Houston.

Joe was a retired carman from the Norfolk & Southern Railroad and he served his country in both the U.S. Army and Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by three daughters, Debra H. Cloer of Sugar Hill, GA, Sharon H. Wright and her husband, Terry of Knoxville, TN and Teresa H. Trippett and her husband, Richard of Logansville, GA; four brothers, Mack A. Houston, Jerry C. Houston and John W. Houston of Hickory, N.C. and Harry R. Houston of East Bend, N.C.; two sisters, Audrey L. Swank of Roanoke and Jane Bralley of Pocahontas and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. Jesse Booth officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and Cremation Service, 7404 Timberlake Road.
