Margaret Casey Foster

Margaret Casey Foster, 83, of Lynchburg, passed away April 19, 2004, at the Medical Care Center.

Born October 28, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Edward Casey and Loula Smoot Casey. She was retired from the Madison Garment Company and a member of Revermont Avenue Baptist Church, as well as a member of the Madison Heights Rebekahs Lodge number twenty-two.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her husband, William Massie Foster, four sisters, Shirley Casey, Phyllis Casey, Thelma C. Wilmer and Hilda M. Casey.

Survivors include two sons, William M. Foster and wife Beth of Forest and David W. Foster and wife Sharon of Monroe; one daughter, Luann F. Turner and husband Billy of Amherst; sister, Helen Reynolds and husband Earl of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, David W. Foster, Jr., John B. Foster, Samantha C. Turner and Drew W. Turner; two nephews, Stephen Reynolds and wife Brenda and Marvin R. Reynolds and wife Laura, both of Forest, other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Presbyterian cemetery by the Reverend David Breckenridge.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the American Heart Association, P.O. Charles Grant

Charles Grant, 60, of Lynchburg, passed away, Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Jo Shelton Grant.

Born Dec. 30, 1943, in Amherst County, the son of Mary Floyd Grant of Lynchburg and the late Charles Robert Grant. Mr. Grant was a member and former employee of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his four children, Dwayne Allen Grant and wife Amy of Lynchburg, Jennifer Steppe and husband Lewis of Rustburg and Patricia Ragland and husband Brian and Robert Wade Grant both of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Derrick, Mason, Kelsey, Zachary and Daniel; one brother, Owen W. Grant and wife Debbie of Tenn.; and many friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 20, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Jerry Falwell. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Family visitation will be from 7 – 8:30 p.m., today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 120 Walton Dr., Lynchburg.

Ralph Echols Peters, Jr.

Ralph Echols Peters, Jr., 77, of Amherst, died Sunday, January 30, 2005 following a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Frances Ann Dinkins Peters for 58 years.

Born November 10, 1927 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Ralph Echols Peters, Sr. and the late Berta May Viar Peters, also preceding him in death were a brother, Neil H. Peters, a sister, Judy P.Tucker, a brother-in law, Richard Cofflin; his son-in-law, Kenneth T. Cross, and his son, Richard Dwayne Peters, who died January 11, of this year.

Mr. Peters retired from Mead Corporation as a tour foreman, after 42 years service; he was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Monroe, serving as a Deacon, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, RA Leader, and member of the Baptist Men; he also took great joy in teaching a special Bible Study Class for over 18 years.

In addition to his wife Frances, he is survived by a son, Ryland R. Peters, Sr., and his wife Gladys of Amherst; three daughters, Sandra P. Cross of Amherst, Rhonda P. Hand of Duncansville, PA, and Wanda W. Slack and Phil of Tampa, FL.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Judy W. Peters of Amherst; three brothers, Raymond W. Peters of Lynchburg, Harold E. Peters and his wife Aimiee of Bedford, and Leslie P. Peters and his wife Roma of Madison Heights; two sisters, Peggy P. Staton of Buena Vista and Betty P. McCauley and her husband Danny of Madison Heights; also surviving are a sister-in-law, Janice D. Cofflin, and two brothers-in-law, James D. Dinkins and his wife Dossie and Charles A. Dinkins and his wife Patsy, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Rev. Glynn A. Coleman and the Rev. Bruce Lee Rockwell, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence, 295 Neighbors Drive, Amherst.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Amherst Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 193, Amherst, VA 24521

Whitten Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Monelison Chapel, 929-5712, is assisting the Peters' family with services.

Nick (William Donald) Bauer

Nick (William Donald) Bauer, died at his home in Amherst, Wednesday, May 11, 2005 of brain and lung cancer. During the past several months, he spent increased time with his sister, Donna Murphy of Amherst; his nieces, Tina Murphy and Gwen Hodnett, also of Amherst and his son, David William Bauer of Los Angeles, California.

Nick is also survived by his daughter, Diane Bauer Martinez and his three grandsons, Alex, Nicholas, and Shane Martinez of Los Angeles.

A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Nick established and owned a prosperous business for decades, before relocating to Amherst to be nearer his family on the east coast. He remained a dedicated Eagles fan, even after relocating to Amherst in 1993.

Nick recently retired from Buffalo Air handling and was busy with projects around the house. Nick was a middle child who found great pleasure in keeping his older and younger sisters on their toes with his keen sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by many.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2005 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Amherst by the Rev. Daniel L. Kelly.

Interment will be held in Our Lady of Grace cemetery in Langhorne, PA at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Edward Stanley Kituskie

Edward Stanley Kituskie, 87, of Madison Heights died Monday, June 2, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Bessie Canada Kituskie.

Born in Mahoney Plains, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1915 he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Orzecka Kitowski. He was retired from Sears-Roebuck after 22 years of service. Prior to that he was the owner of Kituskie's Cafeteria on Kemper Street for 23 years. Mr. Kituskie also served on the Civilian Conservation Corps at Natural Bridge Station and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Mr. Kituskie was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Edward Witt and one brother, Frankie Kituskie.

He is survived by one son, Glenn E. Kituskie and his wife Anne of Lynchburg; two daughters, Jeanne Rigsby and her husband Johnny, Maryanne Tomlin and her husband Ron all of Madison Heights; three brothers, Johnny and Leo Kituskie both of PA. and William P. Kitusky of Lynchburg; one sister, Cecilia K. Trees of Georgia; three granddaughters, Theresa Latchford of Amherst, Cathy Tomlin Weaver of Roanoke and Jennifer Tomlin of Madison Heights; six great grand children and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by two close friends, Frank Wright, Jr. and Maxine Rigsby.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2003 from Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

Edward Thomas Johnson

Edward Thomas Johnson, 88, of Rustburg, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004 at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Frances Austin Johnson.

Born in Amherst, on April 21, 1915, he was the son of the late Percey Johnson and the late Cleia Watts Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and was a retired electrical contractor.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia J. Gayle and husband Jack of Portsmouth, and Pamella J. Booth and husband Jerry of Rustburg; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a brother, Stanley W. Johnson and wife Elizabeth of Franklin.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Suffolk Christian Church by Rev. Michael D. Halley. Interment will follow in Bethlehem United Church of Christ cemetery in Suffolk.

Shirley Jean Gaither Bagwell

Shirley Jean Gaither Bagwell, 69, of 527 Seminole Dr. in Madison Heights, VA, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2004. Born May 6, 1935, in Guilford College, NC, to the late Mr. and Mrs. R.N. Gaither, she was the wife of Frank F. Bagwell.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bagwell is survived by her three children, Ann B. Childress of Lynchburg, VA, Frank F. Bagwell, Jr. of Lawton, OK and Steven D. Bagwell of Madison Heights, VA, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. She is also survived by two sisters; Stella G. Lewis of Greensboro, NC and Betty G. Wilson of Meadows-of-Dan, VA.

Educated in public schools in Brevard, NC and business college in Raleigh, NC, she was employed as a legal secretary for approximately 40 years in Raleigh, Richmond, VA, Covington, VA and Lynchburg, VA.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 at Spring Hill cemetery, with the Reverend Payton Fitzgerald officiating.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 pm. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Elbridge Tilden (Fred) Gerry, Jr.

Elbridge Tilden (Fred) Gerry, Jr., 68, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, June 04, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara C. Gerry.

Born in Melrose, MA, June 8, 1934, he was a son of the late Eldridge T. and Winifred Champion Gerry. He was retired from Digital Equipment Corp. and was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served during the Korean conflict. Fred was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and was an active and dedicated member of the Old Time Gospel Hour Choir. He was also a member of the Smith Mtn. Lake Harmoneers and the American Legion Post 16.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Elbridge Gerry, III and his wife Claudette of Windham, NH and David P. Gerry and his wife Laura of Salem, NH; three daughters, Debra Malone and her husband Steven of Forest, Robin Guertin and her husband Paul of Nashua, NH and Patricia Connell and her husband Bob of Dracut MA; one sister, June Gagner of Melrose, MA; one brother Gene Gerry of Tweksbury, MA and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday from Thomas Road Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Falwell, the Rev. Roy Newman and the Rev. Gil Brightsen officiating. Interment services will follow at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Virginia Veterans cemetery at Amelia, VA with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Clarence Edward Viar

Clarence Edward Viar, 84, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, September 15, 2003 at his residence. For 66 years, he was the husband of Ruby Gunter Viar, of Lynchburg, who survives him.

He was born September 24, 1918 in Amherst County, the son of the late George Edward Viar and the late Mary Jordan Viar. Mr. Viar was a WWII Navy veteran and was a member of Union Christian Church and had retired from the Central Virginia Trucking Co.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Brenda J. Viar of Lynchburg, three sons, Phillip E. Viar and wife Judy and Clarence “Ron” Viar and wife Elizabeth both of Evington and Tony G. Viar and wife Deane of Forest, five grandsons, Christian R. Viar, Theodore Viar and wife Tammy, Gregory C. Viar and wife Leah, Brad G. Viar and Brian Viar, three great grandchildren, Tyler Viar, Kelsey Viar and Charlie Viar, a brother, Arthur A. Viar of South Boston two half-brothers, Alvin E. Seay of Florida and Garnett Wright Seay of Texas, two sisters, Lois Ferrell of Virginia Beach and Shirley Davis of Michigan.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Union Christian Church by Rev. Sayford Moon. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m., today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the family home at 123 Lemon Dr., Lynchburg.

Vola Duff Wright

Vola Duff Wright, 84, of Monroe, died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Woodrow Wilson Wright.

Born November 24, 1919 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late James Leonard and Emma D. Duff. Mrs. Wright was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was a member of the Golden Merry Makers and the Monroe Church of God.

Mrs. Wright is survived by three sons, James O. Wright and his fiancé, Pat Kidd of

Madison Heights, Wesley L. Wright and his fiancé, Mary Bryan of Amherst, and Ronnie L. Wright and his fiancé, Vickie Gibson and her children, Randall and Jessica of Madison Heights; one sister, Bradie D. Gibson; one brother, Arthur L. Duff; four grandchildren, Sharon Burley, Roger Wright, Chad Wilson Wright, and Brett Warren Wright; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Burley, Tony Burley, and Lyndsey Taylor Wright, and a devoted niece, Lydia Gallier. .

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Paul Campbell. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, Ronnie, 1246 S. Coolwell Road, Madison Heights.

Carolyn J. Quinn

Carolyn J. Quinn, 52, of Madison Heights, passed away, Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Avante Nursing Home.

Carolyn spent the majority of her life dedicated to the care and nurturing of children in her community. She provided love and kindness to everyone she encountered giving of herself effortlessly. She left us today still providing us with her love and guidance.

Born June 7, 1952, she was a daughter of the late Tinsley Coleman Jennings.

Survivors include her mother, Susie Campbell Jennings of Goode, her husband, William D. Quinn and a daughter, Tammy L. Quinn, all of Madison Heights, three sisters; Doris Waller of Knoxville, TN, Geraldine Massie and husband James of Goode and Becky Simmons and husband Larry of Madison Heights, two brothers; T.C. Jennings and wife Deborah and David Jennings and wife Vickie, both of Madison Heights, one brother-in-law, John P. Quinn and wife Denice of Madison Heights and a sister-in-law, Mary Q. Lipscomb and husband Darryl of Fort Mill, SC, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank the administration and staff at Avante Nursing Home of Lynchburg for their compassion and care for Carolyn.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Tim Madison. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday from7-8: 30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of David Jennings, 237 Seminole Dr. in Madison Heights.
